Vizrt and Mosart provide joint solution for newsroom automation and production systems

Vizrt Inc. announced today that a world-wide agreement has been entered with Mosart to provide an optimized newsroom automation system for the broadcast industry.

Mosart is the number one newsroom automation system used by broadcasters in Europe. The software-based automation system offers an extremely efficient workflow for controlling complex, content-rich productions with only a single operator. Using off the shelf client/server hardware, Mosart requires little infrastructure for creating a fully automated news environment.

Combined with the Vizrt end-to-end graphics and video workflow, the Mosart automation system now is a complete package for the entire newsroom workflow from the news editorial process to live on-air production. With just a single Viz Engine added to the Mosart production, broadcasters can create a full show with advanced graphics and video playback in a light-weight and cost-effective solution.

“Vizrt is the global market leader in broadcast graphics. We are therefore grateful that Vizrt have chosen a close cooperation with Mosart for the future,” Mosart’s CEO John Kjellevold states in a comment. “Our aim has been that automation systems like Mosart shall be a natural part of gallery upgrades in the future. Soon, we will be able to make solutions taking care of an even greater part of the workflow starting with newsroom system tools. Broadcasters need to enhance quality, reduce costs and simplify news desk work. The Vizrt – Mosart partnership offers such solutions.”

“This agreement represents a major shift in how broadcasters will look at controlling their news broadcasts”, said Petter Ole Jakobsen, Chief Technology Officer, Vizrt. “When adding the Viz Engine real-time compositing capabilities to the Mosart automation system, any operator can drive the most complex transitions and studio effects from a single interface.”

Together Vizrt and Mosart lead the way bringing this powerful automation system to broadcasters as the most advanced news production platform on the market.

Petter Ole Jakobsen will present the Vizrt TV in a box solution at the Mosart Broadcast Summit in London May 23rd and 24th. At Broadcast Asia in Singapore, Mosart and Vizrt will display their automated integration, June 18th – 21st booth 5H3-01.

PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS TURNS UP THE VOLUME AT THE FOURTH ANNUAL HANGOUT MUSIC FESTIVAL

Expert Team Hits the Sand to Provide RF Coordination for the Nation’s Largest Beach Party

GULF SHORES, AL, MAY 22, 2013—As some of music’s biggest names came together for the fourth annual Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was busy providing frequency coordination for all the artists and media outlets in attendance at the event, the nation’s largest beach bash.

Billed as the first and only event of its kind, the Hangout Festival is a three-day music party staged on the white sand beaches of Gulf Shores. For this year’s event, the PWS team of experts was responsible for monitoring the RF spectrum to ensure there were no issues with the more than 600 frequencies in use. This marks the second consecutive year PWS provided frequency coordination for the festival.

“From an RF coordination standpoint, one of the great things about this event is its location,” says Jim Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “The stages are literally on the beach, right on the Gulf of Mexico. Although there is a fair amount of DTV present, it is still a pretty clean area, with no other major RF congestion from outside sources.”

At the start of each day of the musical celebration Van Winkle and his team made sure that the media and first few bands scheduled to perform were coordinated and ready. “We start the day off acting on what we already know and then spend the rest of the day reacting to any last-minute media or crew requests or unregistered users,” adds Van Winkle. “Toward the end of the day, our team begins preparing for the following day. Preparation is essential for the success of these multi-day events, and each member of our team knows what it takes to get the job done right.”

The 2013 Hangout Festival’s diverse lineup of artists included Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Stevie Wonder, Kings of Leon, the Trey Anastasio Band, The Shins, The Black Crowes, Bassnectar, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and The Roots.

“We are excited to have once again participated in this special celebration of music,” adds Van Winkle. “Our experience in handling large-format frequency coordination for music festivals has proven to be a valuable resource in ensuring shows of this size go off without any hitches. This year, the PWS team did another fantastic job with this.”

Foothills Christian Church Introduces HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression to its Congregation

BOISE, Idaho – Foothills Christian Church in Boise, Idaho hosts three weekly services with a full worship band for more than 1,500 active members. To reach all of its members, the church creates live streams of its services via its website. Looking to upgrade from its analog console, Foothills Christian Church recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 to control its audio system.

Sam Boydstun, Foothills Christian Church Technical Director, needed to replace Foothills Christian Church’s outdated console and sought a way for the musicians and performers to control their own mix. “One of the big things we were looking for was the ability for the musicians and the technicians running the live streaming feed to be able to control their own mix,” said Boydstun. “Having the ability to run the mix from the iPad has been absolutely amazing, that was one of our bigger draws. As well as them being able to control the amount of effects return they get on their individual mixes.”

“I’ve been a big fan of Soundcraft. I’ve worked with the Si Compact Series in the past and I was really pleased with its sound quality,” said Boydstun. “It seemed to be an easy transition for myself and my volunteers from mixing an analog system to get into digital mixing.”

When looking for a new digital board, Boydstun required a console that was easy to use, so that church volunteers would be able to mix on their own. “As far as the use of the Si Expression in the church setting it’s really flexible and it’s a really easy system to teach volunteers and people who have never had the opportunity to be on a digital board before. I’d recommend it to anyone,” Boydstun said.

“The staff and volunteers who have had the opportunity use the Si Expression 3 have given us positive feedback. We’ve also received compliments from the congregation about the sound being much cleaner,” Boydstun concluded.

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of audio, lighting and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer, and professional markets. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with Harman audio and infotainment systems. Digital Signage in a Box—A Turn-Key Bundle from Mitsubishi Electric and Shuttle Computer Group

Digital Signage in a Box—A Turn-Key Bundle from Mitsubishi Electric and Shuttle Computer Group

IRVINE, Calif., May 22, 2013 — You don’t need to be a graphic designer or IT expert to make effective and attractive digital signage. Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc. and Shuttle Computer Group, Inc. have created a new turn-key hardware, software and content system bundle that features everything you need to create compelling digital signage. No other display or media player company has offered such a combination of free professionally-designed graphics with a digital-signage-in-a-box hardware solution.

The bundle features one or two 42-inch or 46-inch commercial-grade Mitsubishi Electric LCD flat panel display(s), Shuttle digital media player(s) and all necessary cables. It also includes 90 days of free content management software and service.

“Our new partnership with Shuttle makes it really easy for people to migrate into digital signage, allowing them to quickly and easily install, connect and start using their signs right away,” said James Chan, vice president of marketing, Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc. “They can create a visual feast for menus, advertising and other messaging and/or content in a virtual plug-and-play scenario.”

Many people feel they need technical proficiency in computers and artistic expertise for graphic design to create and use digital signage effectively. With 90 days’ free content management software and service, users can employ templates to quickly and easily create and display their content. And Shuttle offers on-line and or telephone support Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

“Our customers don’t need to be the experts — that’s why we’re here,” said Marty Lash, director, sales and marketing, Shuttle Computer Group, Inc. “With Mitsubishi Electric’s and Shuttle’s combined reputation for quality and excellence, we offer the best monitors, media players and design expertise to create a turn-key solution.”

The turn-key bundles (Mitsubishi Electric part numbers L422-STXS35, L422-2-STDS61, L462-STXS35, L462-2-STDS61) come with either one or two 42-inch (LDT422V) or 46-inch Mitsubishi Electric monitors (LDT462V) that can be set up in portrait or landscape formats. A networkable Shuttle media player (XS35V2-MITS or DS61V1.1-MITS) and associated cables are also included. The monitors offer a wide range of connectivity options, such as HDMI™ and DVI-D for clear, crisp video and audio transmission over a single cable.

The 90-day free service begins with activation of the digital signage player(s). At the end of the free service period, users have three options:
• Continue subscribing to an annual service contract for as low as $49.95 a month;
• Discontinue the service and keep running the latest existing signage content; or
• Remove the software, erasing all existing content and restoring the player to a standard PC, and then use other PC-based digital signage software, if desired.

“During your first 90 days, you can try new designs, update and upload new content, as well as experiment with digital signage to find out what works best, all with free content management service. No other bundle brings you this kind of flexibility,” added Lash.

The bundles are targeted for availability in June. The hardware devices (monitors and players) come with Mitsubishi Electric’s and Shuttle’s standard three-year limited warranty on parts and labor. Terms and conditions apply.

StrandVision Introduces No Charge Digital Signage Override Feature for Employee Training and Communication

Technimark is first to implement automated hourly training sessions broadcast to employees in break rooms using StrandVision Digital Signage Software…

MENOMONIE, Wis.– May 21, 2013 – StrandVision Digital Signage has introduced a new free electronic signage feature that enables its customers to automatically override the normal digital signage feed in order to provide regularly scheduled or ad hoc training, host employee meetings and offer special communications. The option is an enhancement to the traditional emergency message override that replaces normal digital signage content in seconds. The administrator configures the selection on StrandVision’s Content Management System (CMS) – scheduling training for days or even weeks ahead.

The training override schedule is designed to help StrandVision customers fully leverage their digital signage systems. They can use their employee communication signage infrastructure to deliver any of StrandVision’s two dozen digital signage content templates including photos, text, PowerPoint-based slide presentations (with or without audio, depending on their installation), and even video presentations.

StrandVision’s Digital Signage network is ideal for large, multi-location companies that need to efficiently distribute standardized training or corporate-wide messages to employees. This new feature makes it easy to automatically add certification training, test preparation, breaking company news, as well as special broadcasts during benefits enrollment periods.

The override feature can be scheduled hourly, daily, weekly, or in any number of other configurations, and has similar flexibility to automatically end and return to the normal digital signage broadcast. Its “set it and forget it” approach makes it easy to reach all employees on all shifts in all locations with a single, timely, consistent message. The override feature can also be manually activated or deactivated as needed until the next scheduled change.

Technimark

Technimark, an international manufacturer based in Asheboro, N.C., was the first to implement this new feature. It is using StrandVision Digital Signage to deliver PowerPoint-based training modules directly to employees in break rooms 24/7. The training modules are scheduled to automatically override the standard digital signage content on the hour, every hour, for 15 minutes. The training modules supplement training and eliminate the additional wage cost for extended shift training meetings.

“We developed this capability specifically for Technimark but soon realized its potential for all of our customers,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “We’re now making this available to everyone as a free digital signage option selectable on our StrandVision portal. As with all of our new features, I’m sure our customers will come up with other creative ways to use the training override that’s unique to their situations.”

About StrandVision

StrandVision LLC, based in Menomonie, Wis., delivers low-cost, Web-based digital signage software through a patented Software as a Service (SaaS) approach that delivers content to subscribers’ flat screen televisions, as well as computer screens, websites and mobile devices. It is ideal for many business marketing applications, including medical and dental offices (patient education); banks, retailers and industrial distributors (video merchandising); education (student communication, staff and visitor information); employee break rooms (employee communication of events and benefits); nonprofit and religious organizations (member and supporter communication).

StrandVision also offers PC-2-TV.net, a fully digital, high-definition (HD) video extender to connect a computer to a television over long distances for use with digital signage and many other applications. StrandVision Digital Signage services and PC-2-TV.net are available directly from StrandVision and through registered affiliates and system integrators. Christie CTO Paul Salvini Keynote Speaker at New High Performance Displays Conference in Vancouver

Christie®, a world leader in visual display technology, is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Salvini, its Chief Technology Officer, will be a keynote speaker and a panelist at the High Performance Displays Conference taking place in Vancouver, B.C., on May 23.

High Performance per se is a new topic for the Society for Information Displays (SID) Market Focus Conference Series this year, as part of Display Week 2013, located at the Vancouver Convention Centre from May 19 to 24. Dr. Salvini will deliver the 10.00 a.m. keynote address for the morning session on the 23rd at the one-day High Displays Conference, where the focus will be on the “visual interface” – the performance characteristics of displays that enable differentiable improvements for the user’s visual experience.

Following his keynote address, Dr. Salvini will be one of four display sector leaders taking part in a moderated panel called ‘Great Thinkers.’ The four panelists will be challenged to identify the display performance parameters that “truly enable enhanced human interaction with display devices.”

Dr. Salvini is eminently qualified to discuss the future of high performance displays. At Christie he is CTO and leads the company’s research and innovation activities. He is passionate about the creation of compelling shared visual experiences across multiple domains including cinema, visualization and simulation. Prior to his appointment with Christie in June 2011, Dr. Salvini was CTO at Side Effects Software. He has led a 3-time academy award winning team of engineers and software developers in advancing the art and science of visual effect in feature films.

Dr. Salvini is President of the University of Waterloo Alumni Council and holds an appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the graduate school of computer science at the University of Toronto. He serves on a number of boards relating to digital media research in the areas of graphics, information visualization and 3D film innovation.

In conjunction with Display Week 2013, the May-June issue of SID’s official publication, Information Display Magazine, will feature an exclusive article by Terry Schmidt, Christie Digital’s recently retired Chief Scientist, on how Christie projected the world’s first High Frame Rate (HFR) movie with the world premiere of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” at the historic Embassy Theatre in Wellington, New Zealand.

In the bylined article, Schmidt documents how he led the Christie team that planned and installed Christie CP2230 projectors, complete with integrated media blocks, at the circa 1924 theater last November. This in-depth, four-page article summarizes the effort required to enable the first showing of a major motion picture in vibrant, bright High Frame Rate 3D, which involved Christie’s leading DLP Cinema® projection technology, advanced sound and screen equipment, and earthquake and wind projection.
