Waves Introduces MaxxSpeech® Technology

— MaxxSpeech® enhances the performance of Automatic Speech Recognition engines —

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, June 20, 2013 — The Consumer Electronics Division of Waves, the industry leader in professional audio digital signal processing and recipient of a Technical GRAMMY® award, unveils its new MaxxSpeech® technology. MaxxSpeech revolutionizes the use of automatic speech recognition (ASR) on laptops and desktop computers, by significantly increasing command acceptance and reducing the word error rate, for flawless hands-free voice-controlled communication between users and their devices.

MaxxSpeech is powered by three primary technologies:

MaxxEC™ Stereo Echo Canceller effectively filters out any and all sounds transmitted from the computer’s speakers, thereby providing a clear voice input to be correctly identified by the ASR engine. With MaxxEC Stereo, users can listen to music, watch movies and play games, while simultaneously communicating with their devices and running commands in real-time via ASR.
DeBabble™ Diffused Noise Attenuation leverages Waves’ renowned noise reduction and source localization technologies to provide a purer, more accurate signal, so the ASR engine can perform effectively in environments with large amounts of diffused noise.
MaxxBeam™ Microphone-Array Noise Suppression uses two microphones to create a virtual beam, and then differentiates between signals inside the beam and signals outside of it, suppressing stationary and non-stationary noise from outside the beam, to deliver an optimized input signal to the ASR engine.

Tomer Elbaz, Executive Vice President, Waves Consumer Division, stated, “ASR is becoming an important part of how we interact with our devices. MaxxSpeech enhances ASR performances and helps to overcome significant challenges in the way of future consumer devices and their designs. Research and development were conducted using real-life scenarios in real-life environments, to understand and ultimately serve end-user needs. This is an important development for Waves and for the consumer electronics market.”

Audio-Technica Launches Its Next-Generation SmartMixer®: Introducing the AT-DMM828 Digital Matrix Mixer

— Mixer analyzes and interprets input signals in real time, simplifying the mixing process and preventing feedback and other common problems —

STOW, OH, June 19, 2013 — Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology for over 50 years, is debuting its AT-DMM828 Digital Matrix Mixer, the next generation of the company’s SmartMixer® family of automatic mixers. The AT-DMM828 is a microprocessor-controlled, programmable, automatic-switching eight-channel matrix mixer. Designed for a variety of applications, including installed sound/sound reinforcement, houses of worship, broadcast, recording and more, the AT-DMM828 is designed to improve audio quality through a number of sophisticated methods. One way it achieves this is by keeping the number of open microphones to a minimum, thus reducing background noise, feedback and other distractions, and increasing clarity and audio quality, while providing instant, completely transparent switching between channels. Additionally, the mixer features “correlation,” which analyzes and interprets redundancy of source material between channels in real time and may in turn favor the dominant channel, simplifying the layout/output and reducing feedback, phase issues etc.

The AT-DMM828 can be used with low-impedance dynamic or condenser microphones (including wireless microphone systems), as well as line-level sources. Each of the eight balanced inputs provides switchable 48-Volt phantom power; attenuation is also selectable on each input to allow use with line-level signals. The mixer’s outputs are balanced and non-inverting. All audio connections terminate in block screw connectors.

Up to 16 units of AT-DMM828’s (a total of 128 channels of inputs) can be daisy-chained via CAT5e cable, which carries control bus, audio, and configuration data between mixers. Multiple mixers linked in this way will operate as if they are a single mixer. Therefore, microphones activated on any mixer will cause the appropriate switching functions to occur.

Each AT-DMM828 includes two separate external control system interfaces: Individual channel contact closures (via DB25 connector) and PC control (via RS232 connector or USB). The RS232 connector can also be used to connect an external third-party control system (e.g. Crestron® or AMX®) using “open disclosure communication protocol” to control the mixer.

AT-DMM828 Features:

Eight balanced inputs allow to be used with either mic-level or line-level signal. Each input provides:
48V phantom power (individually selectable)
Individual gain and sound volume controls
Gate attenuation adjustable (0 dB to full mute in steps of 1 dB)

Volume Up/Down (using for channel level control by tactile switch)
VCA function (using for channel level control by external potentiometer)
Compatible with third-party control systems (e.g. Crestron or AMX)
All settings can be adjusted or modified through AT-DMM828 Control Software
Mounts in a single U 19″ rack space (EIA Standard)

The AT-DMM828 Digital Matrix Mixer will be available late summer 2013 with a U.S. MSRP of $2,169.00. For more information, please visit www.audio-technica.com.

Lowell Manufacturing’s ES-62T-LE and ES-4T-LE In-Ceiling Speakers Offer a Solution for New Construction

— The ES-62T-LE and ES-4T-LE (less enclosure) UL listed models allow separate installation of the speaker’s rough-in enclosure components, enabling installers to move swiftly through rough-in stages of new construction including drywall construction and painting, then install the speaker and grill to complete an architecturally pleasing finished product —

PACIFIC, MO, June 19, 2013 — Lowell Manufacturing Company, a U.S. manufacturer of professional A/V products, announces new UL Listed “LE” versions of the ES Series in-ceiling speakers. The LE designation – “less enclosure” – indicates that the speaker and its rough-in enclosure components are delivered as separate items. This allows A/V specialists to install the enclosure/bridge assembly during the rough-in stage of new construction, allowing for accurate speaker pre-wire and placement. This eliminates the need to cut speaker mounting holes after drywall is in place and has been painted. This approach is also fiscally efficient because the integrator does not have to absorb the full cost of the speaker package at the beginning of the installation process. At the appropriate time, the mounting bezel, speaker, transformer, and grille package can be purchased and installed creating an architecturally pleasing and great-sounding end-result.

The ES-62T-LE and ES-4T-LE speakers are the same great performers as their non-LE cousins. The ES-62T-LE (with 6.5-inch coaxial driver) and ES-4T-LE (4-inch dual cone, full-range driver) produce excellent intelligibility for speech and full-frequency response for music, making them ideal for retail, commercial, industrial, institutional and residential applications. These recessed in-ceiling speaker systems provide the kind of crisp, high-frequency response that’s expected from high-quality speaker systems. The speakers’ wide dispersion can actually reduce the number of speakers required to produce even coverage in distributed speaker systems. Built-in reversible “dog-ear” mounting clamps aid fast installation, while allowing the speaker to be mounted in drywall, wood, tile or almost any type of ceiling with thickness up to 2.25 inches. The speakers can also be mounted to drywall or plaster ceilings for infinite-baffle applications (those without enclosures) using the integral dog-ears. Infinite-baffle installations; however, are not UL-listed. For these types of installations, users must order optional mounting components available from Lowell.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6 Consoles Help Mario Biondi Groove at Royal Albert Hall

Robin Leggett, Monitor Engineer for Incognito

LONDON, England – Italian singer Mario Biondi, accompanied by UK-based jazz-funk band Incognito and other guest musicians, held a unique concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the world premiere of his new album, SUN. SSE Audio Group provided a pair of HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 consoles for FOH and monitor mixing for the event.

With a capacity of over 5,500, the Royal Albert Hall hosts more than 350 events year round including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballets, operas, and much more. With 18 supporting musicians onstage, plus four guest appearances, Biondi performed the entire album SUN together with his greatest hits. “With a show such as this, I needed a console that could handle a large number of inputs and outputs and which would also give me flexibility and speed with minimal pre-production,” said Robin Leggett, Monitor Engineer for Incognito. “With 28 mixes onstage I needed to be able to access functions quickly, but having worked with Soundcraft’s Vi6 previously, I knew it would do the job.”

Chris Lewis, FOH Engineer for Incognito and who handled the FOH mixing for the Mario Biondi concert, has also enjoyed working with Vi6 consoles for several years. “I’ve used the Vi6 many times and it’s built solid, like Studer consoles,” Lewis said. “I really like the user interface and for a gig like this the user layer is really beneficial, I can get where I need very quickly and easily. We had 56 channels of audio, so I edited a user layer so that I could have every channel I needed to adjust on one layer; very useful.”

Royal Albert Hall was specifically designed to host unamplified productions, “The space is very reverberant,” stated Leggett. This made mixing for Biondi’s concert challenging. “Keeping the onstage levels under control is more of a challenge in this kind of venue, but fortunately the level of consistency we received from the band and guest musicians was excellent.”

“I was able to program the desk during rehearsals the previous few days before the show and I already have a Vi6 setup for Incognito concerts, so I was able to use our base setup and build on top of that for this concert,” Lewis added.

“With the Vi6s, the show was a real success,” Leggett concluded. “I find that with this console I don’t have to dig around when I’m mixing. Its intuitive functionality is ideal for demanding shows, especially when I’m under time pressure.”

Soundcraft is distributed in the UK/ROI by Sound Technology Ltd.

Clay Paky Lights Up Coachella for Red Hot Chili Peppers

When the annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival got underway, with its 24/7 schedule and desert location, Clay Paky lighting took center stage for the Main Stage performances of California rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Lighting designer Scott Holthaus had 70 Clay Paky Sharpys and 23 Clay Paky Alpha Beam 1500s in his inventory for the Chili Peppers’ nighttime shows on both festival weekends. “The Sharpys were on moving pods on the stage while the 1500s were on top of my vertical towers, on the floors and screamers; eight 1500s were front of house,” he explains.

Holthaus recounts how “one show was nearly cancelled due to a sandstorm. There were sand dunes on the stage. Our video portion and many of the fixtures were disabled. All I had was Sharpys and Alphas.” With so many particulates in the air Holthaus wanted fixtures “that throw a beam as far as possible. The 1500 throws telephone poles way deep into the crowd – huge telescopic beams that are good to the last seat. No one I know had seen beams like that before – they looked like Star Wars light sabers!”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “This is the third year Scott has been using our Sharpys and it sounds like they were the star of the show. It’s great to support his work and we’re thrilled that he keeps coming back to our fixtures.”

Despite the adverse environmental conditions the first weekend, “the lights held up well, and everything worked flawlessly,” Holthaus concludes. “They also did great the second weekend. The lights really cut through – that’s why we choose those kind of tools.” Premier Global supplied Holthaus with the fixtures.

New York, June 21, 2013 – YCD Multimedia, a leading global provider of smart digital media solutions, today announced the release of YCD|RAMP 5 – the next generation of the company’s proprietary Retail Advertising and Merchandising Platform (RAMP). This new version combines robust campaign management capabilities with HTML5 support.

YCD|RAMP 5 brings RAMP’s flexibility, scalability and ease of use to the next level with the introduction of HTML5 templates and a brand new “run anywhere” RAMP HTML5 Player. HTML5 templates open up a world of dynamic and flexible content creation options. With the RAMP HTML5 Player, campaigns and menu boards can now be displayed on most devices and browsers supporting HTML5. Together, the two help businesses harness the growing popularity and powerful capabilities of HTML5 to create engaging experiences faster and easier, more cost-effectively and – as a result – more frequently.

Product updates, new campaigns and advertisements can be quickly and easily managed using RAMP’s intuitive interface, capable of differentiating price and promotion by location and time. These can then be sent to one, some or all locations using presets to ensure that each location receives and deploys relevant updates on time. Individual store managers or local regional managers can manage corporate-authorized campaign slots and make real-time updates based on local criteria such as weather, events/promotions, or inventory levels.

YCD|RAMP 5 maintains all existing functionality that was developed specifically for marketing workflows; it allows retailers to create, manage and deliver branded marketing campaigns and product promotions across their entire retail chain. Marketing teams can easily deploy branded templates that can be used with in-store multimedia content and display arrangements that work to attract, assist, inform and promote. Configuration types can include menu boards, point-of-sale impulse and brand loyalty displays.

“YCD|RAMP 5 meets the market’s requirement for more scalable and open solutions,” said Noam Levavi, YCD’s CEO. “The new version is optimized to further enhance RAMP as a marketing tool to meet the specific business objectives of retailers. I see this as a way to help corporate marketers improve business processes, as well as to establish a tool set that will improve the management of marketing campaigns, making them more targeted, more efficient and more effective, in a way that creates measurable results for the bottom-line.”
