WATCHOUT SHOW VIEWERS CAN NOW JUMP DIRECTLY INTO SOUNDTRACK WITH PICKUP

Making its InfoComm debut at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL was the WIRETAG™ transponder from Dataton.

Plugging directly into WATCHPAX™ solid-state media server, which runs Dataton’s established WATCHOUT™ show-timeline, media control and image-manipulation software on a built-in, compact embedded computer, the WIRETAG transponder allows audience members equipped with PICKUP™ audio guides to ‘jump’ straight into the audio of a WATCHOUT show and remain in perfect sync.

Not proprietary to WATCHPAX, the integration of WIRETAG and PICKUP can also be incorporated in existing audiovisual systems that deploy WATCHOUT and associated computing hardware.

“Simply put, WIRETAG allows the direct integration of a WATCHOUT show with our PICKUP audio-guide system,” says Lars Sandlund, Chief Operating Officer, Dataton. “Simply point and click at the WIRETAG with a PICKUP audio guide, and you jump straight into the soundtrack at the correct point in the show, regardless of how much time has elapsed.”

For added functionality with WATCHPAX, each WIRETAG plugs into the WATCHPAX via the latter’s USB connection and requires no separate power supply. The transponder can then be affixed to a display or other visible unit using the supplied self-adhesive pad. PICKUP users can be as much as 8m away from the WIRETAG and still receive the correct audio.

As well as acting as a means of integration with WATCHOUT shows, WIRETAG can also be used as an externally powered alternative to Dataton’s established MICROTAG, for example in audio tours that take place in physically demanding environments or where access for battery changes is limited.

Like WATCHPAX, WATCHOUT and PICKUP, Dataton’s new WIRETAG was displayed at Booth #3915 at the OCCC, where the Swedish manufacturer demonstrated its products together with its North American Premium Partner, Show Sage.

PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS OFFERS CHAMPION-CALIBER FREQUENCY COORDINATION FOR 2013 NBA FINALS

On-Site Technical Expertise Ensures Solid RF Coverage for 9th Consecutive Championship Series

MIAMI, JUNE 21, 2013—When game one of the 2013 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs tipped off at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company, and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was courtside, coordinating RF for the more than 250 frequencies in use at the championship series. This marks the ninth straight time PWS has managed the frequencies for the Finals.

This year, PWS’ team on the ground included Jim Van Winkle John Garrido and Larry Myhre, who worked closely with the team venues—the American Airlines Arena in Miami (Miami Heat) and the AT&T Center in San Antonio (San Antonio Spurs)—to ensure zero frequency interference throughout the course of each game.

“Familiarity is a key factor in making frequency coordination work,” says Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “Since this is the third consecutive year the Miami Heat have made it to the Finals, we had the advantage of already being familiar with their arena. And although it’s been eight years since the Spurs were in the championship, we have been in their building as well, so that also made it easier for us.”

For the seven game series, PWS also collaborated with the networks broadcasting the games, along with the local Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) coordinators, to get the local contacts and information they needed at each venue. This way, they could ensure they had all the necessary RF information for Miami and San Antonio.

“People working the same event every year begin to recognize faces so they understand that we are there to help protect them from rogue frequencies,” says John Garrido. “Now they come to us if they feel they need a new, cleaner channel. While it doesn’t necessarily take the burden off of anyone, it is nice to be considered a familiar face after working the same event for a while. A lot of them will also come find us when they see someone who is not compliant so we can go find them and issue them frequencies.”

One of the biggest challenges the PWS team faces in providing frequency coordination is the sheer volume of ENG crews and news reporters that cover the Finals. “With more than 250 frequencies spread out all over the arena, it is essential that we stay on top of things, and find and correct any issues as quickly as possible,” says Van Winkle. “In the past, you could have a break in between segments. These days, there are a lot of non-stop entertainment performances that are part of the game experience, which makes it more physically demanding. There are more people with wireless mics than ever before and because it is live, so we run around a lot more to resolve any issues.”

In order to keep the high volume of RF signal usage in check and to ensure frequencies maintain solid signals, PWS brings along its high-end portable equipment, including its spectrum and portable analyzers. “Having these tools is essential, as their portability allows us to chase down and resolve a problem as quickly as possible,” concludes Van Winkle.

Bryan Cranston Chooses ELAN g! To Control New LEED® Platinum Home

At a young age, Emmy® award-winning actor Bryan Cranston learned the value of recycling and prolonging the life of things he owns. Today, he has taken his eco-conscious lifestyle one step further by building a new LEED® Platinum certified beachfront home near Los Angeles, California. The home, which Cranston dubbed 3Palms, uses solar panels, radiant heat, low-energy appliances, LED lighting and natural ventilation to cut energy usage, and everything from the lights to the motorized window shutters can be controlled from anywhere in the world through the simple-to-use ELAN® g! Entertainment and Control System!

“My grandparents and parents taught me about recycling when I was a boy,” Cranston reminisced. “It was just part of their lives — composting, recycling, repurposing and using things until they were of no use, not succumbing to the temptation of buying something new simply because it’s new. I’ve been of that mindset for 50 years, so when I started thinking about creating a new home on the beach, I decided I wanted to do a net-zero energy house and get LEED Platinum certification.”

After finding a suitable beachfront plot that housed a very unsuitable, inefficient 1940s home, Cranston began designing the new 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home using every energy-conscious element possible. Considerations include motorized window shutters for protection from the elements, solar panels for electricity, solar thermal units for hot water, house-wide LED lighting, high-performance insulation, wood from FSC certified sustainable forests, and the ELAN g! Entertainment and Control system to make everything easy to use, manage and monitor, including schedules for lighting, heating and security, plus worldwide access to check on the home.

“I’ve already used the ELAN system remotely with the mobile app to check on the security cameras,” Cranston said. “I was rushing out the door, and as I was driving away I had a moment of doubt where I thought ‘Did I close the garage doors?’, so I went on the system and checked the cameras. One of them lets me see the garage, and sure enough it was open! So I went into the system, pushed close, and that was that. It’s worth its weight in gold right there.”

In addition to the security cameras, garage doors and window shutters, the ELAN g! system allows Cranston to use his iPhone or iPad to control his whole-home music system and every light both indoors and outdoors. With pre-set schedules for heating, lighting and security, he never has to wonder whether his home is running at optimum efficiency. The g! system also has a history feature where he can view the past usage of each system and then easily make any adjustments he wants.

Cranston can even see which lights or speakers are on in each room, then turn them off one at a time or all at once. Justin Brees of custom electronics installation company AM House programmed a super convenient ‘Home/Away” button that sets the home up for when he leaves or returns. It’s specially programmed to shut down the house when no one is home, with actions such as turning off all the lights and speakers, arming the security system and closing the shutters. For additional “Away” mode security, some lights go on at random intervals at night to simulate that someone is home.

To show the public that eco-living can still be comfortable and stylish, Cranston is leveraging his celebrity status to share his new green home with television viewers all across the U.S. in a syndicated weekend series called “Real Green”. The series will air in late 2013 and will be broadcast on more than 100 local affiliates and cable networks. It will cover the entire project from conception to move-in and include segments with all of the experienced professionals that helped make his dream home a reality, including the builder Bryan Henson, project designer John Turturro, and custom electronics installer Justin Brees.
