BenQ’s New Digital Displays and Video Wall Solutions Poised to Reshape Commercial Signage Applications

Public Information Display Lines Feature Super Narrow Bezel Screens, Interactive Touch Panels, and Mainstream Signage Solutions

ORLANDO, Fla. — InfoComm — June 11, 2013 — BenQ America Corp., a globally renowned provider of digital lifestyle innovations, today announced the availability of its new commercial-grade Public Information Display (PID) solutions. Designed to provide immersive visual experiences via higher brightness, more elegant design, and cost-saving technology, the PID Series comprises three new lines made to satisfy today’s most impressive digital signage installations: Super Narrow Bezel panels for video wall displays; Interactive Touch Screens with industry-leading six-point multitouch technology; and Mainstream signage for high-traffic commercial public spaces.

Super Narrow Bezel Panels for Video Wall Displays
For large video wall deployments, BenQ’s new P Series of Super Narrow Bezel displays ensures that content remains the most prominent feature of any sizeable signage installation by achieving an incredible 5.6-mm active-active gap (3.5 mm top and left; 2.1 mm bottom and right) between screens for up to 10×10 video wall displays. The result is a virtually seamless viewing experience for the audience by making bezels practically invisible from a distance. To facilitate the installation process, P Series displays also feature screen-unifying color calibration technology to accelerate video wall setups, RJ45 Ethernet and RS232 interface support, and digital daisy chain connectivity, which enables the delivery of high-quality content to multiple screens through a single DVI port. Making video walls even more vivid to the viewer, the series’ PL models offer 450 nits of high brightness, while the PH models shine at an ultra-luminescent 700 nits of lighting power. To lower the solutions’ total cost of ownership, P Series displays also feature an auto cooling function, which activates fans whenever screen temperatures reach critical levels.

Interactive Touch Screens With industry-Leading Six-Point Multitouch Technology
Featuring up to six-point multitouch displays — the highest number of touch points in the industry — as well as ambient light sensors for energy efficiency and LAN control for remote management and maintenance, the Interactive Touch IL Series has been deliberately designed for public venues that demand longer service life, higher dependability, and environmental consideration. While LAN control provides 24/7 centralized access to signage deployments, the IL Series also features full-HD resolution, a 4000:1 contrast ratio, and latency-free response times. The result is the production of smooth, rich images with no visible color banding for extremely vivid content. The series also provides scheduling management functions, portrait display capabilities, and rich connectivity options for added flexibility.

Mainstream Signage For High-Traffic Commercial Public Spaces
BenQ’s durable Mainstream SL Series provides a dust-proof design that is ideal for retail applications such as convenience stores, shopping spaces, and restaurant environments that need reliable around-the-clock operation. Featuring an amazing average life of 50,000 hours enough for several years of non-stop display service the SL Series also displays 10-bit levels for each primary color to produce an amazing one billion total colors. To facilitate the installation and calibration process, the series also features both digital and analog daisy chain capabilities, Open Pluggable Specification (SL461A model) for easy networking with other equipment, and PIP/PbP to display content from two different video sources independently, adding even more convenience and flexibility to signage applications.

“Our new digital signage and video wall solutions reassert our first-to-market reputation by pushing the boundaries of thought leadership, innovation, and commitment to reducing total cost of ownership,” said Kristin Kennedy, Associate Vice President, U.S. Sales at BenQ America Corp. “With game-changing features like ambient light sensors and a new Multiple Display Administrator application, users obtain the brightest possible image, colorific picture quality, and intuitive management tools that reach today’s essential energy-efficiency objectives. The result is smarter, more impactful signage installations across all commercial applications, backed by value pricing.”

All BenQ flat panel displays feature a Multiple Display Administrator (MDA) application, which enables control of up to 98 displays simultaneously through the local network. The application also monitors the health of each display and coordinates sequential startups to prevent power surges. To improve energy performance and reduce maintenance costs, BenQ’s public information displays feature sensors to automatically adjust brightness, anti-image retention to prevent the “burned-in” effect after extended periods of usage, and scheduling management to allow users to program up to seven sets of on/off times down to individual video input sources. All models feature landscape and portrait modes, which facilitate installations and the conception of creative video wall applications.

BenQ’s digital signage and video wall solutions begin shipping in July 2013, and will be on display in booth 3071 at InfoComm 2013. More information is available at www.BenQ.us.

HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series Column Loudspeakers Provide Powerful Outdoor Sound for the Prophet’s Mosque In Medina, Saudi Arabia

ORLANDO, Florida — The Prophet’s Mosque is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world, built by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the year 622 and enlarged over the centuries to where it can now accommodate up to one million worshippers during peak periods. Many devotees listen to services on the piazza outside the mosque, which is an integral part of the Prophet’s Mosque and was recently renovated with a number of upgrades including a HARMAN’s JBL loudspeaker system comprising more than 200 CBT Series column loudspeakers.

The previous loudspeakers had limited frequency response, especially in the low end, but had delivered adequate speech reinforcement until a series of canopies were installed around the outside of the mosque to shield worshippers from the heat and sun. These canopies were placed in front of the existing speakers and blocked the sound from them, resulting in the need for a new loudspeaker system. Ahmad Tekin Topuzdag, owner of Istanbul, Turkey-based A/V systems integrator Topuzdag, who is currently employed by Saudi Bin Laden Group (the company contracted to handle the operations and maintenance of the Prophet’s Mosque), was tasked by SBG to supervise and execute the system upgrade.

Topuzdag saw the opportunity to improve the system’s frequency response, coverage and overall sound quality. Because the piazza was more than 2,760,000 square feet in size, a large-scale loudspeaker system had to be deployed with amplifier power to match. After conducting an acoustic and architectural evaluation, Topuzdag determined that JBL CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers and companion CBT 70JE-1 low frequency extension columns were ideal for the Prophet’s Mosque’s requirements. “The CBT 70J-1 and CBT 70-JE1’s specs indicated they would provide the full frequency response and bass performance we were looking for, along with powerful, intelligible sound over the entire area, which is very important,” said Topuzdag.

SBG installed 140 CBT 70J-1 loudspeakers to cover the piazza, along with 85 CBT 70-JE1 extension columns in areas where additional bass reinforcement was required. A key aspect of the CBT loudspeakers is their asymmetrical vertical coverage pattern, which sends more sound toward areas that are farther away than areas that are closer, resulting in more consistent sound levels at the various listening distances. Topuzdag noted that worshippers who are standing near the speakers don’t get overwhelmed with volume, while people who are more distant can still hear the speakers clearly. In addition, the CBT Series’ slim profile and white finish make them less conspicuous in blending in with the appearance of the mosque.

The speakers are driven by 32 Crown CDi 6000 amplifiers, connected to a BSS Audio BLU-160 Signal Processor with Digital Audio Bus, which provides system control, gain adjustment, delay compensation over the large outdoor area and control of other parameters.

The system has not only met but exceeded Topuzdag’s expectations. “The JBL CBT loudspeakers provide exactly what they were designed to deliver, with an excellent balance of volume and even coverage throughout the entire vast space of the piazza. Now, everyone who comes to the People’s Mosque can hear every word that is said clearly, whether they’re inside the mosque or worshipping outdoors,” he said.

HARMAN’S JBL Professional Expands In-Ceiling Loudspeaker Lineup With New Control 10 Series

ORLANDO, Florida — At InfoComm 2013, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is introducing its Control 10 Series—three new in-ceiling loudspeakers that combine installation-friendly features with superior sound quality and value. The Control 16C/T, Control 14C/T and Control 12C/T are designed for applications where lower- to medium-volume music playback and paging is appropriate, including retail stores, restaurants, music/paging systems, airports, waiting rooms and many other areas.

“Blind-mount speakers tend to be the easiest and most cost effective speakers to install for projects that don’t require pre-installed backcan. The Control 10 Series models broaden our lineup with a new series of cost-effective blind-mount ceiling speakers, letting customers choose exactly the right loudspeaker for their requirements,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Manager, Installed Sound, JBL Professional. “These are some very nice sounding speakers at excellent price points.”

The 2-way, 6.5-inch Control 16C/T coaxial loudspeaker, 2-way, 4-inch Control 14C/T coaxial loudspeaker and 3-inch Control 12C/T compact loudspeaker can be used in 70/100V distributed audio systems or with low-impedance direct operation. All models are available in either white or black. Each model has a blind-mount backcan for quick, easy installation and includes dual conduit/cable strain-relief clamps and removable locking speaker terminal connectors with screw terminals and loop-through terminals.

The Control 16C/T, 14C/T and 12C/T are designed to deliver clean, detailed, high-quality sound over a wide coverage area. The 16C/T and 14C/T’s woofers feature a lightweight, anodized aluminum voice coil former and high temperature voice coil for stable performance and reliability even under constant use. The woofer cones are made of water- and humidity-resistant polypropylene, with a butyl rubber surround that provides long-term durability and sonic damping. The woofer’s computer-optimized motor construction, cone geometry and linear suspension design enable an even frequency response and more consistent off-axis performance.

The Control 10 Series loudspeakers all feature an ABS baffle with a UL94-V0 and UL94-5VB fire rating and a zinc-plated backcan and all are UL1480 and UL2043 certified, with transformers that are UL1876 registered.

Quick-Change Artists: Puresound Masters the Art of Fast Setup and Breakdown at Breakaway Ministries with HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays

ORLANDO, Florida — Breakaway Ministries, a non-denominational weekly Bible study organization on the campus of Texas A&M University, began in 1989 when 12 students came together to worship, and has grown to where thousands of college students gather every Tuesday night primarily in Reed Arena basketball arena or Kyle Field football stadium. Houston, Texas sound contractor Puresound supplies a HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line array sound system for the weekly gatherings, which are more challenging than a usual house of worship gig for Puresound owner Wes Mathew and crew—they have to set up the entire system in an hour and break it down in an hour.

“It’s like setting up a portable mega-church,” said Mathew. “From one week to the next we could be in either Reed Arena or Kyle Field so we’re constantly on the move. The logistics of both locations give us just about an hour to set up the system, from pulling in the truck to handing the worship leader a live microphone. When the service ends we have an hour to break the system down.”

To facilitate such a speedy setup, Mathew and a special team of Breakaway volunteers rely heavily on JBL VERTEC VT4888ADP midsize and VT4887ADP compact powered line array elements, along with VT4881ADP powered subwoofers. Because they only have an hour, building rigging and flying speakers is impossible. The loudspeakers can be quickly and easily ground-stacked, thanks to their quick-release pins, end-mounted metal frames, front and rear hinge bars and other features that enable fast, stable setup.

Another major plus is the VERTEC built-in DrivePack™ amplifier module. “With the powered VERTEC loudspeakers it’s literally plug and play,” Mathew said. “It also makes it much easier to bring more or fewer speakers depending on the venue and the event—we can just add or subtract arrays as needed without having to deal with bringing extra amps or figuring out how many amps to leave behind.”

In Reed Arena, Puresound uses four VT4888ADP powered line array elements per side to cover the center section of the court or stadium, and six VT4887ADP powered line array elements per side to cover the sides of the facilities. Six VT4881 powered subwoofers and four JBL SRX728S subs placed along the ground by the portable platform stage handle the low end. Crown XTi4000 amplifiers power the subwoofers. At Kyle Field, Puresound uses a similar configuration with the arrays spaced apart every 25 yards.

“The VERTECs work well in a ground-stacked configuration in these applications because the height of the platform stages we put the line arrays on and the curved stacking configuration of the arrays place them in positions where they cover most of the seating really well and deliver clear, intelligible sound,” Mathew noted. “We don’t really need to fly any of the speakers.”

As Breakaway Ministries grows, Mathew expects the system to grow with them, and JBL VERTEC’s modular, powered design and Puresound’s “portable mega church” approach will help ease any growing pains.

HARMAN’s Crown Showcases Its DriveCore Install Series Power Amplifiers at InfoComm 2013

ORLANDO, Florida — At InfoComm 2013, HARMAN’s Crown Audio is showcasing its DriveCore Install (DCi) Series power amplifiers. Successor to the company’s acclaimed CTs Series, the DCi amplifiers incorporate a host of improvements including HARMAN’s exclusive DriveCore™ technology to set new industry standards in reliability, sound quality, flexibility and efficiency.

Twelve models in the DCi Series are available ranging from 300 watts to 600 watts (into 4 and 8 ohms and 70Vrms and 100Vrms). The first number in the model is the amount of channels and the second number indicates the watts-per-channel power rating. All amplifiers are just 2U rack spaces high, to conserve valuable installation space.

“In introducing the DCi Series we had to exceed the benchmarks set by our acclaimed CTs Series, which has established itself as the de facto amplifier standard for installed sound applications,” said Daniel Saenz, Business Segment Manager, Install Sound, Crown. “It was no easy task, but our DCi Series offers an entirely new level of unsurpassed performance that will be appreciated by audio professionals worldwide.”

At the heart of the DCi Series is HARMAN’s proprietary DriveCore amplifier IC chip. The DriveCore chip combines the amplifier driver stage into the power output stage along with additional audio-signal functions – yet is about the size of a postage stamp. DriveCore and the DCi Series’ leading-edge amplifier topologies dramatically reduce size and power consumption requirements and yield much more energy-efficient operation that conforms to HARMAN International’s GreenEdge™ environmental initiative.

DriveCore technology dramatically reduces the footprint of the amplifier by replacing over 500 parts from a typical amplifier design with one single IC. Smaller amplifier engines means more channels can be put into a 2 RU box with more capabilities.

Crown DCi Series amplifiers can be operated into 8-, 4- or 2-ohm loads and offer direct drive “constant voltage” capabilities for 70Vrms and 100Vrms amplification without the need for a step-up transformer, yielding higher audio quality in distributed audio applications. The amplifiers incorporate an exclusive Power Factor Corrected Global Power Supply that is designed to deliver maximum power in any country and their universal AC input accepts voltages from 100 – 240 VAC, 50/60Hz (+/- 10%).

The DCi Series is Crown’s greenest amplifier line ever, with a Power Factor Corrected (PFC) power supply, a selectable powersave auto-standby mode where the amplifier will power down after 30 minutes of no input signal and consume less than 1 watt. In addition to the amplifiers’ balanced 3-pin input connectors and 2-pin terminal strip output connectors, a rear-panel AUX port enables the amplifiers to be integrated into control systems for remote on/off and amplifier fault monitoring.

Crown DCi Series amplifiers are built for the most demanding conditions of continuous professional use and carry a 3-year, no-fault fully transferrable warranty.

Most importantly, system designers are able to deploy each of these transports using a single software application,” stated Iain Gregory, Market Manager for Installed Sound at HARMAN Signal Processing.

“During the past two years, the growth of Dante has been moving at a phenomenal pace and we are thrilled that BSS has developed their Dante solution so quickly,” stated Lee Ellison, CEO of Audinate. “Since BSS announced the adoption of Dante last year, the commercial installation community has been extremely positive in anticipation of this release of the Soundweb London platform with Dante.”

The BLU-806 and BLU-326 along with the other members of the Soundweb London family provide the building blocks of the perfectly tailored system solution.
