Extron Introduces New Market-Leading Speaker Innovation for Suspended Ceilings

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the SpeedMount® Ceiling Speaker System, a patented low profile, plenum rated two-piece ceiling tile speaker system for division-of-labor installations. The CS 1226T SpeedMount speaker system features the newest speaker innovation from Extron, a unique speaker design that greatly simplifies ceiling speaker installation and delivers significant time and cost savings. The two-piece system consists of the CS 120P plenum rated enclosure and a CS 26T two-way speaker cartridge. A low-voltage contractor places the CS 120P enclosure directly on the ceiling grid without the need for a tile bridge, C-ring, or tile rails. Signal wiring is then routed to the enclosure. This dramatically cuts installation time and costs during the rough-in phase. Later, an AV technician can quickly complete installation by connecting the CS 26T speaker cartridge to the wiring and securing it into the enclosure. The CS 1226T is the latest in Extron’s expanding lineup of speaker system solutions that divide the installation labor between contractors, reduce parts counts, and streamline sound system integration.

“Extron continues to lead the AV industry with exclusive innovations in speaker technologies that deliver tangible cost-saving benefits for AV integrators, from a growing product family that includes our Flat Field® ceiling tile speakers, the SM 3 SpeedMount surface mount speaker, and the new CS 1226T SpeedMount ceiling speaker system,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “Installing ceiling speakers is often a laborious and time-consuming process involving several speaker parts – the CS 1226T is just two pieces which makes installation much quicker and simpler.”

The CS 1226T is available as a complete assembly of a pair of CS 120P enclosures and a pair of CS 26T speaker cartridges. The enclosures and speaker cartridge can also be purchased in pairs separately, so they can be delivered to low-voltage and AV system contractors.

The CS 120P plenum enclosure installs quickly into 2′ x 2′ (61 cm x 61 cm) or metric 600 mm x 600 mm suspended ceiling grids. It features a shallow 5″ (12.7 cm) profile, which simplifies installation into congested ceiling spaces around piping and ducts. The integrated tile bridge of the enclosure rests on the ceiling tile above the grid, evenly distributing the weight of the CS 120P and the CS 26T speaker cartridge. This avoids the need to assemble V-rails and C-rings, greatly reducing the number of installation steps and the chance of losing installation hardware.

The CS 26T speaker cartridge features a 6.5″ (16.5 cm) woofer and a 3/4″ (1.9 cm) tweeter in a coaxial design, and can be used in 70/100 volt or 8 ohm operation. It installs quickly and easily into the CS 120P enclosure. The CS 26T delivers high performance, full-range audio reproduction with a frequency response of 70 Hz to 20 kHz, and is optimized for a wide range of audio presentation applications for music, program, and voice. It features a power rating of 30 watts continuous pink noise and 60 watts continuous program capacity, and offers both direct 8 ohm or 70/100 volt operation with a behind-the-grille, six position power selector switch. The CS 26T features a magnetically attached grille and a thin-edged bezel for a refined appearance on the ceiling.

Red TX Helps Chime For Change Reach Out To The World

Broadcast audio specialists Red TX played a vital role in ensuring that last Saturday’s Sound of Change Live concert at London’s Twickenham Stadium was successfully broadcast to more than 150 countries around the world.

With both its Red I and Red II trucks on site, not to mention a crew of seven, Red TX was more than able to cope with the complexity of the live broadcast and the fast turnaround between acts performing on four different stages.

Billed as a feminist Live Aid, Sound of Change Live was a focal point for the Chime for Change campaign, which aims to improve education, health and justice for women around the world. The campaign was founded by Gucci’s designer Frida Giannini, Beyoncé and Salma Hayek and Saturday’s concert raised over £2.6 million to fund approximately 200 projects in 70 countries. It also provided a great day out for more than 50,000 people who flocked to Twickenham Stadium to watch Beyoncé, Rita Ora, Jessie J, Haim, Ellie Goulding, Jennifer Lopez and Florence and the Machine take to the stage to champion the cause. Even Jay-Z put in an appearance, performing Crazy in Love with his wife, Beyoncé.

The Red TX teams consisted of Tim Summerhayes, Ben Summerhayes and Matt Silverston on board Red I; Ian Dyckhoff, Huub Lelieveld and Rohan Igoe on board Red II and Christian Postna as back up between the two trucks.

Red TX was commissioned to handle the broadcast audio by Splinter Films. Splinter’s Emer Patten was Chime’s Broadcast Producer co-ordinating the mammoth production for global transmission.

She says: “As I’ve been working with Red TX for such a long time now, they really were the only choice for the job and I knew they wouldn’t let me down. We had our usual experience of a crazy busy schedule, coupled with a lot of fun and mutual respect. I love working with Tim and Ian, and it was great that we were able to bring in Huub for Red II, who took care of the C&D stages so fantastically for us.”

According to Red TX director Tim Summerhayes, Sound of Change Live was the biggest and most complex live broadcast event the company has handled for quite a while.

“It was a little nerve wracking knowing we were responsible for a live broadcast audio feed that was going out to over 150 countries, but we just got on with it and tried not to think about how many people were potentially listening to our output,” Summerhayes says. “We had three engineers on each truck, plus an additional sound man as a spare pair of hands. Mainly we were switching between trucks, from one performance area to another, but there were a couple of occasions where one team had to do back to back performances on the same stage and that meant we only had six minutes to turn everything around. It was complex, but thanks to a lot of careful preparation everything ran like clockwork and everyone was delighted with the end result.”

Red TX worked closely with Britannia Row, which was in charge of the live sound, and Visions, which has its own OB truck at the event. Sub mixes from each music mix truck were fed to Gary Moore on the Visions truck, who mixed in presentation audio. Gary also submixed the 24 audience mics and distributed this to himself and the two music mix trucks.

“Britannia Row and Visions are companies we know and trust as we have worked with them on many occasions in the past,” Summerhayes adds. “I was particularly impressed with Britannia Row and have no idea how they held it all together. Every detail was worked out in advance with military precision – even down to having all the vocal mics and radio packs individually labeled for each artist so that nothing was left to chance.”

DPA Microphones d:facto II Vocal Mic on Display at InfoComm 2013

ORLANDO, FL, JUNE 6, 2013 – DPA Microphones will feature the d:facto™ II Vocal Microphone at InfoComm 2013 (Booth 774). Perfect for any live performance, this latest addition to the d:facto line affords users unlimited possibilities for their performances. The mic’s state-of-the-art adapter system, which allows for seamless integration with many professional wireless systems, is regarded as a major game changer.

The d:facto II Vocal Microphone is DPA’s latest condenser microphone. It brings true studio sound to the live stage by offering an extraordinarily natural sound, superior gain before feedback and extreme SPL handling. The new d:facto II guarantees users will have legendary DPA sound, regardless of their existing wireless systems, including Sony, Lectrosonics, Shure, Wisycom and Sennheiser. The d:facto II also provides improved audio performance, as it is superbly linear in frequency and phase, both on- and off-axis, while its impressive definition and accuracy reproduces a singer’s voice effortlessly.

“The launch of the d:facto II Vocal Microphone is a major step for DPA, as it means that we now have a microphone for every acoustic miking situation, whether you are amplifying or recording,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “We are extremely proud to have developed an ingenious adapter/preamp range that brings the true DPA sound out of a wireless system. The ones that are currently available deliver very limited power to handle the dynamic output from our high-end condenser capsules, so getting the sound quality we wanted was nearly impossible. We had to be creative and put a huge amount of work and thought into the electronic circuit of the adapter/preamp solution. We wanted to be completely true to the input of the vocalist, and with d:facto II we have reached this goal.”

Equally at home in sound reinforcement and recording applications, the d:facto II’s simple plug-and-play features allow it to reproduce an extraordinarily natural sound, which reaches the extreme sound level handling of 160 dB. As with all DPA mics, the d:facto II provides superior gain before feedback and a robust three-stage pop protection grid built into the microphone to remove unwanted noise. It also boasts exceptional isolation from handling noise as well as the ability to accommodate extreme sound levels.

DPA Microphone will also exhibit its other microphone lines, which are equally ideal for the live performance or installation markets. The company’s highly regarded Reference Standard Microphones, now known as d:dicate, have long delivered superb audio quality to musicians who want to use a microphone on a stand. For mobile instrument miking solutions, DPA offers the innovative d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and its range of Miniature Microphones, which are ideal for those who prefer to have their microphone mounted on their instrument. Another solution that will be available at InfoComm is DPA’s lightweight, easy-to-wear d:fine™ Headset Microphone, which is seen increasingly more often at events where voice intelligibility is important.

ABOUT DPA:
DPA Microphones A/S is the leading Danish Professional Audio manufacturer of high quality condenser microphones and microphone solutions for professional applications in studio, broadcast, theatre, video/film and sound reinforcement environments. All DPA microphones and components are manufactured at the company’s purpose-built factory in Denmark.

FiberPlex Introduces at InfoComm Live Production Toolbox for Quick, Easy Fiber Optic Connectivity

New this InfoComm, FiberPlex Technologies introduces a Live Production Toolbox with everything needed to easily connect remote cameras, microphones, and other equipment over fiber optic cable regardless of media type or data format.

The FiberPlex Production Toolbox helps overcome many of the challenges encountered in any given live production. “Fiber is really the only contender when it comes to transporting information like high-bandwidth 3G or 6G-UHD video, audio, lighting control, etc., because it is high capacity and noise-free from mile one to mile 99. The difficulty until now has been setting it up for different media formats. With this toolbox, we’ve literally made it easy to not only set up varying types of feeds, but also to change them out quickly as needed,” said Kyle Rosenbloom with FiberPlex, a leading fiber optics equipment manufacturer.

Central to the toolbox is FiberPlex’ WDM16 active wave division multiplexer combining 16 optical channels onto a single pair of single-mode fiber, each channel supporting aggregate data rates from 155MB to 3GB. The multiplexer automatically converts signals to the appropriate optical wavelength for transport purposes, taking the tedium out of fiber connectivity and opening up the use of optical links for on-demand, fast-paced applications such as live production. “Inevitably, unforeseen challenges crop up at the last minute during a live production or broadcast, and, many times, techs are left scratching their heads and running around like crazy looking for a solution. With the WDM16, all they have to do now is plug in another SFP module and they’re good to go. We are making fiber connectivity a plug-and-play proposition,” said Rosenbloom, explaining that the WDM16 allocates any audio, video, or other data feed to a specific wavelength on a full spectrum (like a rainbow of colors that cannot be seen by the human eye), and then combines all of those wavelengths together onto a single pair of fiber.

Hot-pluggable SFP (small form-factor pluggable) modules for the WDM16 come in a variety of formats for interoperability between SD-, HD- and 3G-SDI as well as 10/100/1G Ethernet connectivity, MADI, varying wavelengths of multimode/single-mode optics, and single fiber BiDi (bidirectional). FiberPlex WDM16 frames also accept  standard SFP modules from third-party providers.

Another must-have device in the Live Production Toolbox is FiberPlex’ new FOI-6010, a universal hot-pluggable SFP/SFP+ frame for interoperability between media formats up to 10GB. The FOI-6010 can be used as a standalone unit for smaller applications needing just one or two fiber links, or for larger productions that require routing of multiple signals back to the WDM16 from, say, several camera and announcement locations around a sports stadium. Whether transporting standard definition or high definition (3G-SDI or newer 6G-UHD), Ethernet or various serial data formats, FiberPlex has it covered with this single powerful solution.

Rounding out the Production Toolbox is FiberPlex’ LightViper digital audio management system to handle distributing audio throughout a venue. The LightViper system includes stagebox/mic pres; analog and digital AES-3 audio; a very high quality word clock; and either a fiber optic pass through or fiber optic splits on every device.

FiberPlex’ Production Toolbox is intended for live broadcasts and music productions, as well as for webinars, video conferencing or any other production, from small to large to extremely large. The Production Toolbox will be at FiberPlex booth 820 during the InfoComm convention.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 3 Supports East Brunswick’s St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church Sermons

EAST BRUNSWICK, New Jersey – Michael Matta of South River, New Jersey-based GMT Electronics recently installed a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Matta also purchased a Soundcraft Si Expression 1 for GMT Electronics for a variety of applications.

GMT Electronics provides pro audio solutions for houses of worship, corporate events and conferencing environments. Matta has been a long-time Soundcraft enthusiast, both as a customer and certified dealer. “That’s the beauty of my relationship with Soundcraft. I was a customer at first and now I’m a certified dealer for a product I really love. I’ve been a fan of Soundcraft all along,” said Matta.

When considering a new console for St. Mary’s, Matta required a board that offers ease of use and high-quality mixing capabilities. “What I like about the Si Expression is its simplicity because you don’t have to use a lot of menus or sub-menus while mixing, which can be distracting for live applications,” said Matta. “In addition, the built-in effects are very powerful and allow for operation without having to buy external equipment. It’s really phenomenal.”

Matta also discovered the Si Expression is easy to learn—an important feature for a house of worship that relies on volunteer staff to operate its audio system. “You can start to get familiar with the Si Expression within a day or two. The average user doesn’t have to know all the features yet and can still produce a mix. You can easily learn on the go with the Si Expression,” said Matta.

GMT Electronics and Matta equip local houses of worship in the area with pro audio solutions and are currently in the process of installing a Soundcraft Si Expression 3 at another local church.

“I’m very happy with the Soundcraft quality,” Matta concluded. “We appreciate Soundcraft and what Soundcraft means to us.”

New Hope Baptist Church Goes Digital with Yamaha CL1: Adds to DSR Arsenal

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—Initially opening in 1941, the 250-seat contemporary-style New Hope Baptist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey recently wanted to switch their analog mixer out for a digital mixer and chose a Yamaha CL1 equipped with a Rio3224-D input/output box. ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was responsible for the installation and at the same time, upgraded their current DSR speaker system. In 2012, the church added a few Yamaha DSRs and DSR subs, and craving for even more coverage, they just added two DSR115s, four DXR12s, and two more DSR118 subs.

“The church fell in love with the CL1,” states Bobby Harper, Vice President/Sales, ACIR. “They wanted to be able to easily record to multi-track and utilize the Dante networking functions.” Harper also said the church staff is thrilled with the DSR and DXR coverage (the DSRs are flown).

“Our new Yamaha speakers gives us an overall bigger, but controlled sound,” states Minister John W. Howard, Jr., Director of Worship and Arts. “Bands and groups from outside of our church are now renting our space because of our new sound system! The recording capabilities and functionality of the Yamaha CL1 is priceless and easy to use. Our audio staff loves the new system and has learned the CL1 very easily. We work with a number of bands and gospel groups, so the console’s ability to save scenes, saves a lot of work. I would recommend our Yamaha system to anyone.” Minister Howard noted that on any given Sunday, there are 2-3 musicians and 9-20 in the choir.
