CAD Wireless Clears Up Audio Problems At St. Joseph’s Church

Ashtabula, OH––As an integral part of the Roman Catholic Our Lady of Peace parish,
St. Joseph’s Church has been serving the community since the 1930s.

Built in the traditional style and able to hold up to 300 people, St. Joseph’s has an older congregation and, according to Pastor Father Raymond Thomas, “some of our community have hearing impairment problems which presented special challenges for our original microphone system. They couldn’t hear my voice because the sound cut out and it wasn’t clear.”

Elaborating on those problems, CAD Development Engineer Craig Huffman adds, “The existing wireless system just didn’t have the range Father Thomas needed to move around the church. They also struggled with vocal clarity and had recurring problems with microphone pickup.”

A recent upgrade to CAD Audio’s UHF WX100 installation-grade wireless system solved all of those problems. The new system starts with three rack mounted WX100 receivers and three WX155 body packs with rechargeable batteries and BPC drop-in chargers. The body packs are equipped with WXHW and Model 302 cardioid condenser headworn mics and a Model 301 cardioid condenser lavalier mic. A DA100 distribution amp and ANT110 antennas complete the package designed for Father Thomas, Parochial Vicar Father Ernesto Rodriguez and a visiting Deacon.

The result? As Father Thomas says, “I’m very pleased and the sound is beautiful, especially compared to what we had before. The clarity is phenomenal, like night and day. Everyone can hear the spoken word a lot better now, which makes our services much more involving and inclusive.”

Lightware U.S.A. to Demo Live Instant Matrix Switching of 4K HDMI 1.4 Sources to 4K Monitors at InfoComm13

Visitors attending InfoComm13 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, June 8-14, will be treated to a unique demo at the Lightware U.S.A. booth #4180 where they will witness live matrix switching of 4K HDMI 1.4 sources on a 4K monitor. The demo will spotlight Lightware’s MX-3D-HDMI-IB input board and MX-3D-HDMI-OB output board, which provides 8-channels of HDMI 1.4a inputs/outputs and is now shipping. Lightware U.S.A. is the US distributor for Budapest-based Lightware Visual Engineering products.

The impressive demo will likely feature the only working and currently shipping 4K matrix switcher at InfoComm13 and one of the few 4K and UHD monitors in the industry available today. “It’s a very unique solution for the coming wave of 4K and UHD,” says Lightware USA’s Drew Taylor. “Lightware is ahead of the curve with this technology.”

The demonstration will show that instant matrix switching of 4K HDMI 1.4 sources is more than a proof of concept: With Lightware it’s a reality and available today.

“The MX-HDMI-3D input and output boards are in stock and available now in the US,” Taylor points out. “A lot of our customers are interested in boards that support 4K even if they have no 4K sources now. They want to future-proof their systems for when they go to 4K – at a time when the price point for 4K monitors and sources will have decreased, while some customers in high end applications are already using 4K today.”

Lightware’s MX-HDMI-3D boards are HDMI 1.4a, DVI and HDCP compliant and supports all 3D formats and 36-bit color depth. The input board is available with audio option connectors: Digital S/PDIF or analog stereo connectors are available for advanced audio functions. Audio can be embedded or de-embedded on the input or output board of the Matrix. Advanced professional functions, such as HDCP enable/disable mode, Pixel Accurate Reclocking, Advanced EDID Management and Input Signal Frame Detector, are integrated and provide the highest level of technical capabilities, signal quality and system integrity.

Historic St. Augustine’s Church Upgrades its Audio with Community ENTASYS and dSPEC

Founded in 1832, St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, in Minster, Ohio, built its first building, a log structure, in 1835. The brick church building, built in 1848, has gone through several significant renovations including replacement of the original, single tower with twin Gothic towers in 1874, installation of stained glass windows in 1878 and the addition of seven ceiling murals, painted by Joseph Vittur, in 1866.

St. Augustine’s beautiful interior is highly reverberant which is well suited for its pipe organ and 78-voice choir. However, the church’s acoustics have always been a challenge for voice intelligibility. So, in 2012, St. Augustine’s worked with Steve Merrill of Stage Right Productions to install a new sound reinforcement system based on Community’s Entasys 200 loudspeakers and dSPEC Loudspeaker Processor.

“The old sound system put the sound everywhere,” said Merrill. “The reverb and echoes were terrible and I had to overcome these problems.” Merrill had used Community’s original Entasys Column Line Array on another project and knew that Entasys could project the sound directly to the people and keep it off of St. Augustine’s rounded ceiling and hard floors. But, Merrill was attracted to Community’s newer Entasys 200 family because it offered several versatile models that he could use in different areas of the church.

Merrill chose Entasys 212s for the main church sanctuary and Entasys 203s for the front (chancel) area and the choir loft. “A single pair of Entasys 212s would have covered the entire sanctuary,” he said, “but I put a second pair about half-way back in the church and delayed them with the dSPEC processor. Now, the sound is great everywhere. The intelligibility is excellent and you can even hear breath noises!” Merrill put the Entasys 203s on a 70-volt amplifier and used dSPEC to delay the pair covering the choir loft. “The delay makes the sound system disappear,” he said. “The sound seems to come from the lector, not the loudspeakers.”

Merrill used existing electronics where possible to keep the cost down for the church but he replaced older lavalier microphones with new Audio-Technica head-worn mics and added new Ashly amplifiers to power the Entasys 212s.

Greg Oen, lead technical volunteer at the church said “The (dSPEC) processor is amazing. With the delay and equalization, you don’t even notice the loudspeakers.” Oen continued, “some of the older choir members have asked me ‘what did you do to the sound?’ because they can finally understand the message.

Smart Monkeys, Inc. Introduces Five MxM Plug-Ins for Medialon Show Control

Smart Monkeys, Inc. has designed and published a series of five MxM plug-ins for the Medialon Show Control product line. The SMI MxM Series redefines the way Medialon users program shows and installations by offering easier programming, shorter code and faster computation.

“For the first time since Medialon Manager has become available to programmers around the world, an independent company is offering additional tools to improve the capabilities of Medialon Show Control software,” says Smart Monkeys co-founder, Stephan Villet. “We’re pleased to be the first third-party company providing Medialon MxM plug-ins. Our collection of MxMs is a powerful toolkit that allows programmers to be more flexible and work a lot faster.”

The SMI MxM Series consists of SMI Lists MxM, SMI Media Info MxM, SMI Tables MxM, SMI Strings MxM and SMI Variables MxM. Although Medialon users need a license to register each of the SMI MxM plug-ins and use them in programs, the software can be downloaded immediately from the Smart Monkeys, Inc. online store for testing features in the Medialon Manager Demo mode.

SMI Lists MxM gives extended power over List objects manipulations. Simple and easy to use, this plug-in enables users to search, resize, reverse and merge lists in seconds. They can sort a list and automatically keep associated lists synched to it. Commands such as “Convert to Medialon List” and “List Adjust Position” save time and many lines of code. Simple calculation (min, max, sum, average) is included and duplicates or empty items can be removed quickly. The plug-in is priced at $149.

SMI Media Info MxM is a very easy to use Media Metadata aggregator supporting numerous audio, video and picture codecs and formats. Users just select a media file and retrieve hundreds of metadata that can be used in programs and/or simply displayed on panel designs. The plug-in is priced at $49.

SMI Tables MxM brings the power of arrays, tables, databases and more inside Medialon Manager Pro or Lite with no additional software required. This MxM creates an advanced data structure natively within Medialon Manager. An SQL backend supports table functionality with quick sorting, filtering and a range of output options. Since the plug-in is based on SQLite, programmers experienced with SQLite can use standard SQL queries. The plug-in is priced at $299.

SMI Strings MxM makes strings manipulation even more powerful, offering a complete new set of commands never available before in Medialon Manager. Users can split, swap and trim strings; count substrings; convert or remove non-print characters; and check string format. It also introduces Regex (regular expressions) to Medialon programming. This codified method of searching is extremely powerful and well known to developers worldwide. With SMI Strings MxM and the Regex syntax, string computation is limitless. The plug-in is priced at $199.

SMI Variables MxM implements pointers and more for Medialon Manager changing the way users manage variables in projects and saving hundreds or thousands of lines of code. Correction, modification and improvement of projects are fast and efficient; users can loop, iterate, convert and manage variables with incredible ease. Distance, speed and temperature conversions are included. The plug-in is priced at $249.

In addition, Smart Monkeys, Inc. offers the SMI MxM Pack, which bundles all five plug-ins for $749, a greatly reduced price compared to individual purchases.

“”Medialon’s technical team is impressed with the powerful functionality Smart Monkeys’ new MxMs bring to the table,” said Eric J. Cantrell, North American Sales Manager for Medialon, Inc. “Opening up our system for third party developers to create plugins introduced the possibility for advanced functionality that even we hadn’t envisioned. It’s exciting to see power users like Smart Monkeys finding new and more advanced ways to adapt our software to make it even easier to use and more powerful.”
