Clay Paky and grandMA2 Shine at Robin Hood Foundation Gala

The top names in finance and entertainment weren’t the only ones shining at the annual Robin Hood Foundation gala in New York City. Clay Paky Sharpy, Sharpy Washes and Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures were also out in force along with three grandMA2 consoles for lighting control. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of both Clay Paky and MA Lighting in North America.

The Robin Hood Foundation has been targeting poverty in New York City since 1988. Known for applying sound investment principles to philanthropy, the organization partners with the best poverty-fighting nonprofits in the city and initiates and runs projects where community needs are unmet. The 2013 gala at the Jacob K. Javits Center attracted more than 4,200 guests for dinner and entertainment headlined by Mary J. Blige, Bono, Elton John and Sting.

The collaborative team at Performance Environment Design Group, LLC, was charged with the overall Production Design, managing the master drawing and lighting design for the event. Partnering with Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania PEDG specified Clay fixtures and grandMA2s.

“This was a 60,000-square foot dining room, so there was a lot of space to cover in a room with a very limited weight capacity,” says Spike Brant of PEDG llc, “It’s hard to imagine the scale until you do it – everything comes in quantities of hundreds and thousands.”

The event breaks down into 3 distinct area’s cocktail area, dining room and stage, each of which had its lighting controlled by a dedicated grandMA2 console operated by Richard Wold, Brian Jenkins and Matthew Piercy.

The gala marked PEDG’s first opportunity to use Sharpy Wash lights and Alpha Spot QWO 800s. “The Sharpy Washes comprised one-fifth of the wash lights in the huge dining room, we would have more if they had been available” Brant explains. We specified the QWO’s because they were small and lightweight and they fit nicely into the very tight space around the Auction Stage. We are going to use them again soon because of their size, weight, brightness and speed.”

Gand Helps River Edge Park Kick Off Opening Concert Season

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Along the banks of the Fox River in Aurora, Illinois, the new River Edge Park represents a strong collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, including businesses, environmental advocates, developers, and community members. The 30-acre park has a 10-acre Music Garden, with its John C. Dunham venue seating 8,500 including the lawn area. At a cost of 13.2 million dollars, the city of Aurora has taken a huge step in upgrading a former rust belt industrial area and turning it into the place to go for music during the summer months.

To kick off its first season, Gand Concert Sound (GCS) Elk Grove Village IL, aka “the NEXO guys” provided a NEXO Geo T sound system along with Yamaha PM5D-RH and M7CL-48 consoles for the opening weekend. The NEXO rig included 24 GEO T speakers, 12 CD-18 subs, plus PS-15 monitors and Alpha side fills powered by NX 4×4 amps. Entertainment included Buddy Guy, Dr. John, JJ Grey & Mofro, Tommy Castro, Robert Randolph Family Band, and the Stone Foxes for the weekend’s “Blues on the Fox” Festival.

GCS President, Gary Gand said, “It was a great way to start off our outdoor summer season here in the Midwest. BBQ, beer, and Buddy Guy are about as good as it can get under a star-filled sky by the Fox River.”

Audience comments overheard by crew covered the gamut from “I’m all the way in the back, and it sounds great,” to “I’m right in front and it sounds great,” showing off the even coverage provided by the NEXO speakers and GeoSoft plotting software.

Florida swamp rocker JJ Grey, the first artist to play on the park’s stage, had never been to Aurora before the park’s opening night, and called it “beautiful” saying the venue’s sound system, equipment procedures, and crowd made a great impression. Grey announced to the audience, “They killed it.” during his 90-minute set, referring to the new park.

HARMAN’s Studer VistaMix Breaks New Ground on ITV’s The Chase

LONDON, United Kingdom — Brought into the production for the seventh series of ITV’s popular game show, The Chase, sound supervisor Adrian Harding-Jones used HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 digital console with VistaMix automatic mic mixing to great effect.

This was one of several innovations for the popular game show, which for this series relocated from its traditional home — the London Studios on the South Bank — to Teddington Studios. Harding-Jones’ company, Audio Design Inspiration, joined forces with Tony Revell Sound, and in addition to VistaMix, it was also the first time a Cedar DNS8 Live had been used as a mic noise suppressor on individual microphones.

Explaining his preference for the Vista 1, the television sound specialist said, “I was looking for an easy to use and intuitive desk that would easily fit into a tight control room without the need for a hard wired installation. Having all connectivity on the desk, along with the small footprint, made the Vista 1 an ideal solution.”

The integration of VistaMix available in software version 4.9 that the Vista 1 was running —proved a real bonus. “The Chase studio has a large videowall and as a result fan noise is an issue. VistaMix has enabled me to clean up the mix dramatically.”

VistaMix was designed for just such an unscripted multi-microphone live event as this, since game-shows inherently suffer from both microphone spill and background noise. As active mics are successively added to the mix, so the overall sound quality deteriorates, leading to decreased intelligibility and phase distortion.

Instead of needing to manually adjust all the faders each time, VistaMix automatically mimics the action of a human operator so that ‘talking’ mic gain can be increased at lightning speed while reducing gain for all others — ensuring a clean balanced mix.

Having heard about VistaMix, Adrian Harding-Jones was treated to a demo at the recent BVE 2013 expo by Studer’s Director of Product Strategy, Andrew Hills. “As a result of this I agreed to trial it — and was so impressed with the results, when offered the choice of which desk I could use for The Chase, the Vista 1 was my first choice,” he stated.

The digital console, along with all his mics, recording and sound accessories, was provided by rental company, Terry Tew Sound & Light Ltd. VistaMix immediately proved its worth, with access to the VistaMix settings and routing made extremely easy. “It is highly intuitive and follows the Vistonics logic very well. In use, the speed it offered over manual fader adjustment was remarkable — no human could make that large a fader adjustment so quickly and with such accuracy!”

“It also allows a great reduction in the amount of background noise — a huge problem in studios these days — by effectively only having the mics of people talking open,” he confirmed. “It allows quicker than human reactions when recording unrehearsed and ad lib sequences when the sound supervisor will have no idea who’s going to talk next. The overall result is a better listening experience for the viewer and potentially a reduction in post production time by lessening the need for edits requiring noise reduction.”

Already long familiar with the Studer topography from working extensively on the Vista 5 and Vista 8 Adrian Harding-Jones mixes eight radio mics, three stereo channels of music playback/grams and two channels of VT on The Chase. A further 15 channel sends to VT allow sample accurate timing of all elements being recorded.

The Vista 1 itself is configured with 32 analogue line ins, 32 analogue line outs (some assigned to monitoring), eight AES ins and outs and 64 channel optical MADI in and out. Harding-Jones also specified a Studer D21 AES card — to provide a further eight AES ins and outs. With three shows recorded each day, it endures a heavy duty cycle.

Summing up, Adrian Harding-Jones notes that: “The Chase keeps all dialogue firmly in the centre of the stereo image,” and points to the ability to ‘weight’ the main presenter as being one of VistaMix’s main attributes. Explaining this, he says, “When everyone is talking, which often happens on lively panel shows, the weight control always allows the presenter to cut through the noise.

“I see this being a very useful tool in future and already have other projects I would be interested to start using VistaMix on.”

VistaMix is part of the new V4.9 Vista software, and is available as an upgrade for existing console owners, who should contact their Distributor for more information and system requirements.

Vista System Spyders Create State-of-the-Art Experience at The Mirage Hotel & Casino’s Race & Sports Book

There are Spyders inside the Race & Sports Book at The Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and guests couldn’t be happier. Vista Systems’ Spyder video processors are part of one of the most sophisticated technology installations in Nevada created by Technology West Group.

“We had very old systems that had to be fixed everyday, so when we decided to upgrade we knew it would take more then changing the projector: We had to change the sources as well,” says Chris Kratochwill, manager of audio visual systems for guest technology at MGM Resorts International. “We wanted to create a huge feature for the guests to enjoy – something that was a little more interactive. We wanted to go with 4K to maintain 1080P on all sources.”

Kratochwill also wanted windowing capabilities and shadows and thematic backgrounds for different sports and horseracing. He also wanted moving transitions so the image configuration could change from layout to layout. The system was up and running in six weeks – just in time for March Madness basketball.

Technology West Group (TWG) is an industry leader in customized audio, visual, control and software systems for entertainment, retail, gaming, themed and commercial markets. The company, experienced in large-scale system design and installation, rose to the challenge of upgrading The Mirage Race & Sports Book.

“We selected three Sony SRXT420 4K projectors to utilize the total resolution of the 85 x 16-foot screen,” says TWG principal Brad Cornish. “We needed to edge blend, to create single and multiple images, and we needed HD and HDCP compatibility with all our sources. We looked at various options, and for edge blending, compatibility, windowing and backgrounds. Nothing could beat Spyder.”

A Crestron DM switcher feeds two Spyder X20 systems; 12 outputs run to the projectors (four 2K outputs to each projector) and two to operation control via fiber. “We took two preview outputs to create the main program output,” Cornish explains. “That way we can see in realtime the layout and window configuration on preview monitors in the control room. With the new large screen they can now show a number of sports at once plus one or two very large images. With the presets, they can display anywhere from two to 12 different sports simultaneously.”

Cornish notes that “Vista had all the products available and was able to accommodate us quickly. We had a very tight time frame to get everything up and running.”

Technicians from Vista Systems set up the installation at the Race & Sports Book remaining “until the wee hours of the morning configuring and testing,” says Kratochwill.

Kratochwill adds, “Spyder is working great. The guests just love our new Race & Sports Book!”
