SMPTE Extends Call for Papers Deadline for SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition; Announces Preconference Symposium on Oct. 21

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — June 18, 2013 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has extended the call for papers deadline to July 19 for the prestigious SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, Oct. 22-24 in Hollywood, Calif. In addition, SMPTE has scheduled its preconference symposium for Oct. 21 with the topic “Next-Gen Image Formats: More, Better, or Faster Pixels?” Proposals for technical papers to be presented at the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition may be submitted online at www.smpte.org/cfp.

“The SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition is the premier annual technology event covering motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, over-the-top (OTT) content services, and the allied arts and sciences,” said Barbara H. Lange, executive director, SMPTE. “Every year, this conference features the elite and world-renowned technology thought-leaders from virtually every aspect of the evolving motion-imaging industry. The presentation of technical papers is an important element of the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, and also provides industry members with a valuable opportunity to showcase new technical theory, research, innovation, applications, and practices. Some of the many technical topics of interest include OTT technologies, content creation using Internet or other nontraditional technologies, and Web-based (CDN) and broadcast services. Papers that are commercial or promotional in nature will not be considered, nor will those that already have been published. Student papers are strongly encouraged. This one-day technical symposium will provide delegates with an understanding of the technology landscape, separating fact from fiction. This program is designed for anyone responsible for delivering high-quality imaging in television, cinema, and broadband applications.

Archimedia Introduces World’s First Software Reference Player for Viewing, Testing, and Measuring Master Files on a Standard HDMI HDTV

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — June 17, 2013 — Archimedia Technology, a new company whose technology and applications bridge the gap between content producers and their archives without loss of quality, today announced its inaugural product, Archimedia Reference Player. Designed for video engineers, manufacturers, and archivists who work with video mastering formats such as JPEG 2000, Archimedia Reference Player is the first software player to support multiple vendors’ formats, allowing users to view, test, and measure archival-quality files on a standard HDTV. This revolutionary capability ultimately makes content deliverable more quickly at higher quality, as well as making it unnecessary to create and store the content in other formats.

The first media player to support mastering formats in the most popular wrappers from all major manufacturers, Archimedia Reference Player eliminates the need to work with lower-quality mezzanine and proxy copies of masters. Instead, users are able to see their masters and the internal technical metadata of the files, and stream them to their choice of third-party equipment such as encoders, projectors, multiviewers, nonlinear editors, and broadcast playout servers. Typical video frame rates, in frames per second, are 24 (cinema), 25 (PAL), 29.97 (NTSC), and high-definition rates of up to 1080p60. Because computer desktop frame rates are higher, the graphics card and HDMI(R) monitor’s circuitry introduce visual distortions that are not in the video. Archimedia Reference Player eliminates those distortions by playing video files in their native frame rate as opposed to the frame rate of the desktop setting.

InfoComm Recognizes Malissa Dillman, Kramer Electronics Training & Education Manager, with 2013 InfoComm Educator of the Year Award

InfoComm International®, the leading professional audiovisual trade association, presented its Educator of the Year Award to Kramer Electronics’ Malissa Dillman, CTS-D, CTS-I. The award was presented at InfoComm 2013, the largest professional audiovisual and information communications tradeshow worldwide, held at the Orange County Convention Center in FL. Malissa is the 21st recipient of this prestigious yearly award, and the first woman ever to receive the award.

Malissa is Kramer Electronics USA’s Training and Education Manager. She has worked in the AV industry for over 12 years, during which time she has owned and operated an AV installation company, worked as both a regional sales manager and division sales manager at the dealer level, and served as a regional field sales engineer for a prominent communications company. She has brought this experience to the classroom to help others learn and expand their skill set. This past year, Malissa prepared 212 people to take their Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) exam, and also trained more than 200 industry professionals on key industry principles.

During the past year, Malissa also developed and perfected a successful Kramer road show program. This program offers regional educational opportunities for AV professionals to spend a full day earning up to 10 CTS renewal units, while gaining the most current and topical technology education available today. Malissa also created a popular webinar Analog Sunset, Digital Sunrise and authored a condensed version of Kramer’s Introduction to Digital Technologies for Today’s Pro AV Professional, which serves as an introductory-level training on today’s complicated transition from analog to digital. Malissa was also a recipient of InfoComm’s Women in AV Award at InfoComm in 2012 and was one of the first four women in the world to achieve both the CTS-D and CTS-I credentials.

Extron Introduces New Eight-Channel Audio Extractor for 3G-SDI

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the 3G-AE 100, a high performance audio extractor for 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, and SDI digital video signals. It automatically detects the incoming 3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SDI data rate, de-embeds up to eight channels of digital audio, and then converts it to line level, analog audio. The 3G-AE 100 features an equalized 3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SDI input and eight analog audio outputs that are switch-selectable to support audio groups 1 through 4. A buffered and reclocked 3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SDI loop-through allows two 3G-AE 100 units to be cascaded to support up to 16 channels of embedded audio. The 3G-AE 100 is ideal for use in applications where digital audio must be extracted from a 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, or SDI signal and converted to line level, analog audio.

“SDI signals are steadily gaining popularity as a way to transmit high definition video signals in commercial AV systems, but converting embedded digital audio into a form that can be used in AV systems has been a challenge,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “The 3G-AE 100 joins our growing line of SDI products and provides a simple, convenient solution for de-embedding SDI audio for playback through a house audio system or similar needs.”

The 3G-AE 100 de-embeds eight channels of digital audio from SDI groups 1/2 or 3/4, and outputs it as line level, analog audio on captive screw connectors. Two units can be cascaded to support applications in which 16 channels of audio are required. In addition, the 3G-AE 100 features automatic input equalization up to 500 feet (150 meters) for HD-SDI and SDI signals, and up to 400 feet (120 meters) for 3G-SDI on Extron RG6 cables. Input cable equalization reduces the need for additional signal conditioning equipment by compensating for weak source signals or signal loss from a long input cable.

A convenient front panel data rate indicator provides visual confirmation of input data rates for quick identification of the incoming digital video signal. The 3G-AE 100 is housed in a compact 1U, quarter rack width metal enclosure for easy integration into both new and existing AV systems.

Philippine Broadcaster GMA Network uses Vizrt’s Viz Virtual Studio & Social TV solution for Live Election coverage

GMA Network, one of the premier commercial broadcast television networks in the Philippines, led the ratings for its live Eleksyon 2013 coverage on its flagship TV channel GMA-7. As one of several GMA media outlets covering the country’s mid-term elections, GMA-7 together with its news channel GMA News TV, provided a total of 28 straight hours of live coverage beginning at 4:30am on election day, May 13th 2013.

GMA News and Public Affairs’ Eleksyon 2013 garnered the most TV viewers of any Philippine network, driven in part by its innovative use of visually dynamic graphics technology from Vizrt. GMA acquired new Vizrt graphics technology, including a Viz Virtual Studio with camera tracking hardware and the Vizrt Social TV solution purchased expressly for Eleksyon 2013 coverage. These Vizrt graphics systems complement GMA’s existing Viz Trio character generator and Viz Ticker 3D system.

The Vizrt Social TV solutions gives broadcasters intuitive social media tracking, editorial, and production tools to help them manage their social media initiatives both on-air and online as well as incorporate user generated content into their traditional Vizrt graphics pipeline.

GMA built an immersive two-story 3D Viz Virtual Studio for Eleksyon 2013 that enabled GMA anchors to give their reports while walking around virtual objects such as 3D charts. The studio was filled with expansive video projections of live feeds from GMA news teams at 47 remote locations nationwide, video packages, and real-time data-driven graphics. There were also hologram effects, such as a dozen senatorial candidates appearing to stand alongside the anchor during live reports from the immersive 3D set.

The Vizrt Social TV solution grabbed and converted social media content from two custom GMA web applications for use in live TV graphics including Kandidato Buzz Index, which sifted through Twitter and Facebook posts to determine how senatorial candidates were trending in the social sphere. The other web application, GMA News Online’s Voting Experience Poll, displayed the results of polls asking people about their voting experience. These web applications were powered by Mass Relevance, a social engagement platform that aggregates, captures, filters, and analyzes real-time social media content.

“Our goal was to take our live elections coverage to a whole new level,” said Felipe L. Every HIGHlite Cine 660 3D projector delivers brilliant image fidelity through DPI’s expert implementation of Texas Instruments’ 3-chip DLP® technology. Conservatively priced for such application-enabling solutions, the HIGHlite 660 3D series continues DPI’s legacy of delivering powerful and efficient displays for every venue.

The HIGHlite 1080p-660 3D and HIGHlite WUXGA-660 3D make 3-chip DLP® performance available in a compact, cost effective chassis that produces dazzlingly bright, saturated images and powerful video processing. Utilizing DPI’s new, advanced electronics, both HIGHlite 660 3D models enlist advanced geometry correction, delivering accurate warp map generation via the adjustment of an interpolated grid array of up to 16 x 16 nodes. Furthermore, up to eight maps can be generated, downloaded and stored within the projector’s electronics. On board implementation of Pincushion & Barrel, Cornerstone, Vertical and Horizontal Keystone, and Image Rotation are also standard in the new HIGHlite 660 displays.

HIGHlite 660 3D projectors are equipped with DPI’s exclusive 3D advances that further extend the remarkable flexibility engineered within each HIGHlite display. Applications with 120 Hz native sources can utilize the High Bandwidth Input, eliminating the need for frame doubling. For 60 Hz 3D applications, DPI’s built-in Dual Flash Processing™ enables distribution of 3D content via 60 Hz formats by frame-doubling the signal within the projector. This produces the low flicker image characteristics of a native 120 Hz source without the infrastructure costs associated with distributing and switching ultra-high bandwidth signals.

High quality edge blending and multi-projector tiling are equally robust by way of high bit depth processing that ensures a seamless, contiguous image can be created from multiple projectors. Black Level Uplift in all non-blend areas guarantees uniformity across the screen, even when dark images are displayed. Additionally, end users can choose to utilize the HIGHlite 660’s onboard tiling function by assigning each projector a position within an image matrix. The video processing then automatically extracts the appropriate segment of the input image and enables blending for the appropriate edges.

Though overall image quality is top priority, scaling within the HIGHlite 660 3D models assures the accuracy of scaled imagery through a simple and straightforward process. Resizing and Warp functions are carried out in a single stage process, maximizing the clarity of the resulting image. Furthermore, when operating Blend in conjunction with Warp, the processing will automatically superimpose the warped-blend map onto the geometrically corrected image.

The numerous new capabilities perfectly complement other legacy characteristics that have made DPI’s precision displays the go-to standard for every commercial venue for over 15 years. With a light output of 8,000 lumens, the new HIGHlite 660 3D projectors employ dual 330 watt high intensity discharge lamps for incredibly bright imagery, making them suitable for a wide variety of demanding applications. DPI’s ColorMax™ technology presents the most flexible color management system available today, and serves as a powerful color calibration tool, whether the installation calls for a single projector or an array of projectors in tiled or blended applications. A remarkable range of lens shift allows for broad installation flexibility, augmented by a wide fixed and zoom lens array with throw ratios ranging from .77 to 6.76:1.
