Address tomorrow’s IP video challenges – HEVC Encoding, MPEG-DASH and Hybrid Encoding™ Technology from Haivision’s HaiGear Labs

At IBC 2013, Haivision will preview advanced technology initiatives as part of its HaiGear Labs demonstrations. These new technology advancements address the latest video compression and delivery standards, introducing a progressive application of hardware and software optimization. Haivision will demonstrate:

  • End-to-end live streaming of HEVC, including both software-based encoding and decoding implementations of the next generation HEVC (high-efficiency video coding) H.265 codec. The bandwidth efficiency associated with the adoption of HEVC promises to greatly expand delivery of high-quality, high-resolution video over bandwidth-constrained networks.

  • MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) in an end-to-end live streaming environment, simplifying and converging an HTTP segmented format for the delivery of IP video to help drive down costs and enable better content to be offered to IP video audiences.

  • Hybrid Encoding technology, a blended approach to CPU and GPU utilization for the encoding or transcoding processes. The benefit of Hybrid Encoding is that a single software-based platform can get combined density gains of GPU acceleration while maintaining the quality gains of pure software on CPU. Haivision’s initial approach is to take advantage of the latest Intel™ CPU technology, which incorporates GPUs directly as cores within the chip.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Upgrades Its PowerWall Theater with Christie Projection System

Los Alamos National Laboratory has selected visualization leader Christie® for an extensive upgrade to its Powerwall Theater (PWT), an innovative facility that enables researchers to view the complex models and simulations they have created using some of the world’s fastest supercomputers. The new theater will feature a total of 40 Christie Mirage WU-L WUXGA DLP® 3D LED projectors in a 5 wide by 4 high node grid configuration with double-stacked projectors in each node onto a new ultra high fidelity glass Stewart Filmscreen, and includes Christie AutoCal™ automated blending and alignment for the highest performance 3D content at up to true 120Hz and Christie ArrayLoc™ for continuous color and brightness matching. The technologies combined create seamless, integrated visualization to meet the multi-faceted needs of the laboratory.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops and applies science and technology to ensure the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear deterrent. It works to reduce global threats and solve other emerging national security and energy challenges. Located within the Strategic Computing Complex, the new Powerwall Theater is part of the Data Visualization Corridor that also includes a five-sided La Cueva Grande Immersive Laboratory, as well as desktop visualization and collaborator capabilities. The Powerwall Theater is used to display 3D video content and PowerPoint presentations, as well as interactive data exploration and collaboration among LANL scientists and engineers, outside visitors and funders, stakeholders, and visiting scientists from across the U.S.

The Powerwall in action at Los Alamos National Laboratory

A Picture is Worth [More Than] A Thousand Words
Content is streamed to the Powerwall Theater through a large integrated infrastructure, which is hooked up to various file and visualization systems and computers, allowing users to easily switch between 3D stereoscopic video and high-resolution 2D data.

According to Laura Monroe, ASC Production Visualization Leader, HPC-5 Special Projects Team Leader, the PWT has provided the lab with a vital resource for displaying and interpreting data.

“Visualization allows for complex ideas to come to life in a way they wouldn’t on paper,” Monroe explained. “At times, we are doing simulations of physical data and certain dynamics —seeing it visualized in high-resolution, at a high frame rate (HFR) – and 3D can really help understand things faster. With new and advanced technology ever evolving, I would say a picture is worth much more than a thousand words now.”

“As an institution dealing with U.S national security as well as issues of national and global significance, LANL has an absolute need for premiere, top-of-the-line technology and equipment,” said Zoran Veselic, vice president of Visual Environments at Christie. “Visualization plays an incredibly important role in exploring and synthesizing data and information, not only among scientists within the lab, but also among external companies, visitors, and researchers coming in to view a presentation or collaborate on new ideas. We are pleased that our Christie Mirage WU-L LED WUXGA projectors were selected to deliver the visually stunning 2D and 3D images needed for this high-profile environment.”

Staying at the Forefront of Visualization with Christie
Before its new upgrade, the theater employed an earlier generation of 24 Christie Mirage Series projectors powering 24 separate screens. When it came time to bring the visualization theater up to speed, Christie was again selected to deliver a new and improved state-of-the-art solution. By using 40 double-stacked Christie Mirage WU-L WUXGA projectors for increased brightness, the new theater will now feature the latest advancements in seamless visualization technology. Four Christie Spyder X20 image processors were also chosen for the solution, providing enhanced integration with 20 megapixel video processing, matrix switching, and integrated source monitoring.

A key factor for the upgrade was ensuring a seamless, smooth appearance to the wall. Three vertical glass screens are replacing the 24 individual ones, while blending of the projection images, perfected with built-in auto-calibration and color balance capabilities, will ensure flawless image quality. With the new solution, everything is aligned with more accuracy and in less time.

Among the other criteria for the new design were versatility, ease of maintenance, color reproduction, sharpness and contrast, and 3D stereoscopic support. Christie Mirage WU-L projectors easily met these needs. They offer high resolution, high pixel density, high reliability, and continuous system calibration for a cost-effective 2D/3D capable, flexible visualization solution. The Christie Mirage WU-L also leaves a small energy footprint, with LED illumination that ensures precise, life-like vibrant colors, low cost of ownership and low maintenance.

Monroe added: “The Los Alamos National Laboratory has a very long history of using computer visualization to understand extremely large and complex systems. This is why we want to invest in very advanced visualization technology — we need to stay at the forefront of visualization technology to understand our large datasets.”

Church On the Move Doesn’t Stand Still With HARMAN’s New Martin Lighting and HARMAN Professional Sound

TULSA, Oklahoma — The term “mega church” might have been coined to describe Tulsa, Oklahoma’s 12,000-member Church on the Move. At services, the church’s message is delivered on a scale that rivals major rock concerts, with full-scale lighting, sound and video in a sanctuary that’s bigger than many top music venues. The rock concert analogy is appropriate in more ways than one – the church’s audio and video staff rent rather than purchase most of their lighting, giving them access to the latest HARMAN Martin lighting gear to complement the church’s HARMAN Professional sound system.

“We rent 90 percent of our lighting and it gives us the freedom to change frequently and try new ideas and technologies. We don’t want to be left behind when the industry makes a major shift, ” said Andrew Stone, Church on the Move’s production manager and audio director. Renting also cuts down on the need to retain additional maintenance staff – the church can handle all its lighting needs with two technicians. “The rental model also lets us use high-quality gear without spending a ton of money. We can rent more equipment as needed for bigger events.”

Church On the Move utilizes a host of Martin intelligent lighting products including MAC III Profile lighting, MAC Viper Profile high-output 26,000-lumens fixtures, MAC 700 Wash 26,000-lumens lighting and TW1 tungsten wash lights. Stone and crew will buy equipment when it makes economic sense, and recently purchased a number of Martin VC-Dot 1 fixtures, individually controllable LED dots that are used to create customized video displays. The VC-Dot 1 provides new ways to integrate video technology into stage designs, ceilings and other structures. Church On the Move lighting designer Daniel Connell states, “We can use the VC-Dot 1 as a design element, as a backdrop or split it up for use in several auditoriums.. It’s amazingly versatile and enables us to easily add dramatic visual impact to a space.”

Lighting designer Daniel Connell notes that music is a key element of Church On the Move’s services and that along with the HARMAN JBL, Crown and BSS-based audio system, a major part of the Martin lighting is to create a modern concert looking feel. He doesn’t want “a lot of flash” but the ability for the lighting to set a mood or tone on stage and throughout the sanctuary. “We don’t have a backdrop or a physical stage set so the lighting is our set,” Connell said. “Other house of worship lighting designers don’t do it this way but we feel it’s an interesting and powerful way to do it.”

Connell finds Martin fixtures provide superior color range and saturation; while some fixtures fall off toward the saturated end of their range and some moving lights aren’t the best at delivering a certain color, Martin handles the full light spectrum equally well. Stone agrees, noting that the church has tried every brand of high-end moving light in the six years Connell’s been on staff and that he and Connell prefer Martin’s richer colors and better look and “feel.”

Reliability is paramount, especially with rented gear. “I don’t want rental fixtures dying in the middle of a service,” Connell states. “After a year of use you can start to have problems but I’ve never experienced that with Martin.” Like many organizations, Church On the Move is bringing in more LED lighting for its reduced maintenance and energy costs.

Since 2010 Church On the Move has enjoyed the sonic benefits of a large-scale JBL, Crown and BSS Audio sound system, comprising 38 JBL VerTec line array element hung in four clusters and complemented by 16 JBL ASB6128V subwoofers, 10 flown and six under the stage. Seven JBL AC28/95 speakers behind the perimeter of the stage provide front fill and the speakers are powered by 49 Crown MA5000i and 10 CTs 3000 and CTs 2000 amplifiers. The speakers and amps in the sanctuary and other JBL speakers and Crown amps throughout the church are linked by BSS Soundweb London BLU-160 digital audio processors, and all A/V is networked using HARMAN HiQnet System Architect software.

“We recently had a conference with 2,500 worship and creative directors from around the country, and have held many major events and big services,” Stone said. “Many people came just to hear the JBL VerTecs because of everything they’d heard about them, and that says a lot. Like the Martin lighting, the audio system has performed admirably.”

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of audio, lighting and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer, and professional markets. It is a recognized world leader across its customer segments with premium brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon®, and Mark Levinson®, and leading-edge connectivity, safety and audio technologies. The company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with Harman audio and infotainment systems. Harman has a workforce of about 14,300 people across the Americas, Europe, and Asia and reported sales of $4.4 billion for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012.
