BASSMAXX Launches DiaMon DJ112: Huge Sound, Tiny Box

Self-powered monitor with amazing size to output ratio and unique design

Austin, TX (July 26, 2013)BASSMAXX proudly announces the availability of their new, very compact and very loud DiaMon DJ112. The DiaMon DJ112 gives venues more options for speaker placement without compromising on sound. It also provides mobile DJs big system volume while keeping setup time and effort to a bare minimum.

The DiaMon DJ112 is fully self-contained and needs nothing more than power and signal to be ready to play. Despite its small size, it has the output to keep up with several subwoofers. For portable applications, it’s intended to be mounted on a pole-stand above one or more of the BASSMAXX Profundo Series subwoofers. Used with a subwoofer system, the DiaMon is a powerful main speaker, capable of remarkable clarity at very high sound levels.

An example of their extraordinary size to output ratio came when world-famous DJ Andy C. was presented with them as his monitors. On seeing their size, his comment “That’s not going to do, mate!” was quickly followed by amazement at their volume. “What have you put in those things? I don’t think we need the mains!”

The DiaMon DJ112 is a high-output, self-powered, bi-amped, co-axial monitor that features a neodymium magnet 700W 12” woofer; a 3″ voice coil, a 1.4” exit compression driver; and a 1500W amplifier with an integrated digital signal processor. The compression driver plays through the center of the woofer, making it a true point-source cabinet. Both the woofer and tweeter coils share the same magnetic structure to keep size and weight to a minimum, and the cabinet is barely bigger than the 12″ woofer. The 1500-watt class D Powersoft amplifier features built-in digital signal processing that provides crossover functions as well as a full complement of protections, limiters and equalizers that ensure accurate, consistent, and reliable operation.

An impressive example of how the DiaMon integrates elegantly into a venue’s décor while simultaneously creating an intense dance sound system can be found at AMPED in Austin, TX. AMPED, an upscale, two-story dance and live music club on Austin’s famed Sixth Street features a full BASSMAXX system install with four DiaMon DJ112s for the dance floor mains, paired with two BASSMAXX SSP218 Profundo Subwoofers. With a limited amount of space upstairs and a roof that opens to the sky, this set-up enables the club to minimize obstruction of the view while maximizing sound quality and quantity.

Not only are the size and the sound quality compelling, but the DiaMon DJ112’s unique design makes the monitor a talking point for both DJs and their audience. The angle-cut corner allows it to be placed on a table and used as a DJ monitor without pole-mounting. An adjustable wall-mount bracket is also available. Gregory Selph, Operating Partner at TREEHOUSE Miami was the first to put the DiaMon DJ112 to the test as a DJ monitor. “It’s an ultra forward design that you just don’t see in any other clubs…” he reports. “The DJs, especially the European DJs – they love it – I love it. Looks aside, if they didn’t take the beatings our system took each night then it wouldn’t matter how great they look. We have put our new DiaMon DJ112 monitors through a pretty tortuous three months test drive, and again – no disappointments.” DJ Luke Hunter experienced the performance of the DiaMonDJ12 first hand while performing at Treehouse Miami, and raved “I’m completely blown away!”

In 2000, Sarathy won the “Virgin Voice Choice” contest sponsored by Virgin Records and Channel [V] India, taking first prize over 45,000 other contestants. Her professional career took off after singing the full-length solo song “Thoodu Varuma” for the blockbuster Tamil film, Kaakha Kaakha in 2003. She has since contributed to more than 350 Indian films and is also accomplished as a percussionist and keyboard player performing Western classical, soul, jazz and other styles.

Sarathy uses the AKG C5 professional vocal condenser microphone for live performance and the C414 XL II reference multi-pattern condenser mic for recording. “I love the AKG C5 and C414 XL II for their sonic purity, warmth and presence,” said Sarathy. “I know I can depend on the C5 to deliver outstanding sound anywhere I perform, night after night and it sounds exceptionally rich and detailed.”

Premier Production & Sound Services Delivers World-Class Audio to Variety of Events with HARMAN’s Crown, JBL and Soundcraft Audio Components

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – Over a 4-day span, Premier Production & Sound Services (PSS) worked with over 127 bands in Baton Rouge and New Orleans at various music festivals and events, including the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, LSU’s “Groovin’ on the Grounds” and the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans. For the live sound reinforcement of each event, PSS provided HARMAN’s Crown amplifiers, JBL loudspeakers and Soundcraft mixing consoles.

LSU’s student government and LSU student group “Students on Target” coordinate the annual “Groovin’ on the Grounds” concert in Baton Rouge, which combines live musical performances and LSU’s Wellness Fair. This year, Lupe Fiasco, Levee Daze, Yelawolf and Grace Porter highlighted the “Groovin’ on the Grounds” lineup with PSS providing audio for the Main Stage and the Wellness Stage.

On the Main Stage, PSS deployed 24 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array elements (12 per side), 18 JBL VTX S28 subwoofers (nine per side in a cardioid array), four JBL VERTEC® VT4886 subcompact line array elements per side for down fill and front fill, and four VT4886 subcompact line array elements plus two VT4883 subcompact subwoofers per side for side fill. Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers powered the system and all monitor amplifiers were Crown I-Tech 4×3500 HD models. PSS used a Soundcraft Vi6 as the front of house console for the Main Stage. For the Wellness Stage, PSS supplied a system highlighted by JBL PRX portable loudspeakers, including two JBL PRX612M loudspeakers per side, two PRX618S-XLF subwoofers per side and two PRX615M stage monitors.

Known as “The Largest Free Festival in the South,” the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans hosts jazz and blues performers and was attended by over 500,000 fans this year. PSS provided audio for four stages at The French Quarter Festival: the Riverside Capitol One Stage, Jackson Square Stage, Chevron Stage, and Kids’ Stage.

At the Riverside Capitol One Stage, PSS installed four JBL VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements per side, three ground-stacked JBL SRX728 subwoofers and two JBL VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements per side. Crown I-Tech 12000 HD and Crown I-Tech 4×3500 HD amplifiers powered the system and Soundcraft Si2 consoles were used for both front of house and monitor positions.

At the Jackson Square Stage, PSS provided three JBL VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements per side and three ground-stacked JBL SRX728 subwoofers per side with Crown I-Tech 12000 HD and Crown I-Tech 4×3500 HD amplifiers powering the system that was fed by a Soundcraft Vi1 console at front of house and a Soundcraft Si Compact 32 at the monitor position.

The system at the Chevron Stage featured three JBL SRX722 loudspeakers stacked on top of three JBL SRX728S subwoofers per side powered by Crown I-Tech 4000 amplification. PSS used a Soundcraft Series 5 at front of house featuring Lexicon effects and BSS processing and the monitor console was a Soundcraft Si Compact 32. At the Kids’ Stage, PSS provided one JBL SRX722 loudspeaker per side on top of two JBL VRX918S subwoofers per side. Two Crown I-Tech 5000 amplifiers powered the main system with two Crown XTi 4000 amplifiers for the monitors.

All systems at the French Quarter Festival used JBL SRX712M stage monitors, with a total of 32 SRX712M monitors across all stages.

This year, the Baton Rouge Blues and Heritage Festival was the largest the event has ever been, featuring headliners such as Robert Randolph and the Family Band and Bobby Rush. In its first year running both stages at the festival, PSS provided JBL VERTEC line arrays for the main stage, a JBL SRX loudspeaker system for the smaller stage, complemented by Soundcraft Si Compact 32 consoles and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

PSS has been a Soundcraft customer for many years and Russ Bryant, Director of Operations and Co-Owner of PSS, was impressed with both the Vi and Si series. “Across the entire line, the Soundcraft consoles have better audio quality than all of their competitors,” said Bryant. “The Vi series is extremely flexible, easy to use and I really like the fact that their stage boxes are compatible across the Vi and Si lines.”

In addition, Bryant commented on the advantages of the new JBL V5 presets for VERTEC. “We are very happy with the V5 tunings and the improved processing, especially the limiting in the I-Tech HD amplifiers,“ Bryant concluded.

Rock Star University Delivers the Decibels With HARMAN’s JBL, Crown, Soundcraft and AKG

SANTA ROSA, California – Santa Rosa’s Rock Star University (www.rockstaruniversity.com) teaches students how to play like the pros. The “House of Rock” offers instruction in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals and stage performance. Located in an 8,000-square-foot music and media production building, the school is equipped with a 1,000-square-foot stage complete with stacks of amplifiers, drums, audio and video recording facilities and a complete pro audio system including HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line array loudspeakers, Crown I-Tech HD Series amps, a Soundcraft Vi1 mixing console and AKG microphones.

Rock Star University was built from the ground up – the owners purchased a warehouse, gutted it and converted it into a combination performance venue, music teaching school and rehearsal studio. The 350-seat performance area features a full stage with concert-quality lighting, video backline and sound. The audio and video system was installed by systems integrator Sound Expressions of Santa Rosa (www.soundexpressions.com) under the direction of Greg Adams.

Sound Expressions was one of the first systems contractors to ever install the VERTEC VT4886 line arrays in the US and chose the VT4886 subcompact line array element for Rock Star University, having outstanding results with the speaker in various sizes and shapes of venues. “For this space it was a home run out of the box,” said Adams. “We needed a low-profile line array system because of the low ceilings in the performance space and I knew the VT4886 would be perfect for it.” Adams and his team hung five JBL VT4886 loudspeakers on each side of the stage, with low-frequency reinforcement provided by one JBL SRX728 subwoofer per side. The system also features four JBL SRX712M stage monitors.

PA system amplification is courtesy of Crown I-Tech 12000HD power amps. “The I-Tech HD’s have tons of power and tons of headroom,” Adams noted. They’re really clean even when pushed hard and the sound tailoring and system tuning capabilities offered by their onboard DSP is unparalleled.” A Soundcraft Vi1 digital live sound console was chosen for its combination of small footprint yet large channel count, ease of use and flexibility. Rock Star University puts a big emphasis on recording its students’ performances so the students can listen to and learn from them, and the Vi1 is equipped with a MADI card that outputs multitrack digital audio from the console into a ProTools rig.

Rounding out the system is a complement of AKG vocal and instrument microphones. The drum kit is miked using D40 dynamic mics on the snare and tom toms, a C214 large-diaphragm condenser overhead mic and a C451 B condenser on the hi-hat. Several D5 handheld vocal mics are on hand and the guitar amps are miked with Perception 120 condensers. CM311 and 520L headworn mics are available for drummers who sing and WMS 470 wireless systems are used with electric guitars. In addition, three IVM4500 wireless in-ear monitoring systems are available for vocalists.

“Students who attend Rock Star University aren’t just going to some glorified rehearsal studio—thanks to the HARMAN Professional audio system and the same staging and lighting you’d find in a real music venue, the students are getting a complete learning experience that’ll have them ready to rock wherever they play,” Adams concluded.

MSI Lines Comic-Con 2013 Panels With HARMAN’s AKG Microphones As Celebrities Talk TV, Movies And Comics

VIENNA, Austria – As die-hard comic fans flooded the San Diego Convention Center, Comic-Con 2013 hosted more than 100,000 visitors as well as hundreds of celebrity guests discussing their latest movie roles and ideas surrounding the comic universe. During numerous panels, stars such as Peter Dinklage, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford addressed questions from the audience through HARMAN’s AKG D5 microphones.

Provided by San Diego-based MSI Production Services, the D5 microphones were deployed by audio designer Rob Wisley and Eric Stahlhammer. HARMAN’s Ken Freeman, Senior Manager, Business Development, Installed Sound, was onsite to assist with the deployment. Wisley stated, “The D5’s performed very well, especially for this application, where a smooth, wide frequency response was needed in addition to a well-balanced low end for the speakers.”

Comic-Con panels range from upfront, star-studded talks and how-to video game tutorials, to histories of characters and story lines and Q & A sessions. With such a massive following and demand for seats in the auditoriums, the clarity of the microphones and audio signal were a major priority among the event organizers.

“We understand the importance of the Comic-Con convention, where the support of the fans and other participants help make this international event such a success, so it was important to support the convention speakers with reliable and high quality sound,” continued Wisley. “The D5’s performed as expected and allowed each fan to take in valuable information without missing a word.”

Composer Nick Murray Finds Versatility with HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle

SANTA MONICA, California – Composer and Producer Nick Murray has had his music featured on numerous television shows and movie trailers, including Angels & Demons, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Looper and most recently The Lone Ranger. Murray is currently the CEO, Founder, and Executive Producer at switch., an artist driven trailer music production company based in Santa Monica, CA. Murray started on HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM 91 rack-mounted unit about five years ago and has since upgraded to the Lexicon PCM Total Bundle reverb/effects plug-in.

“I’ve been a Lexicon user for about five years now and quickly fell in love with the Lexicon sound,” explains Murray. “I do a lot of TV music, and in the TV world, you need to compose and produce music very fast. So I primarily use the plug-ins now because they allow me to work really fast and pull up any sound or flavor that I want without disrupting my workflow.”

Murray’s company, switch., just finished their fifth album, entitled “Synthetica,” that is meant for horror movie trailers. His composing style relies heavily on production, taking simple sounds and turning them into something unique that no one has heard before. “To achieve this I am constantly on the hunt for the latest production plug-ins and tools,” said Murray.

“As with any type of music gear, having multiple options provides more opportunities to create,” commented Murray. “One Lexicon preset I often went back to on this project is ‘Random Hall.’ It has that great Lexicon tail that has enough carry over from the original input and sounds great in the overall mix.”

The debate between hardware and software plugins, Murray believes, is dead. He loves the ability to have the hands-on feel of physically turning knobs on hardware, yet, he feels that hardware is a thing of the past and plug-ins are the future. As composers today have grown into producers, mix engineers, editors, and writers as well, they need quality sound that does not slow them down or impede the creative process.

Commenting on his choice of Lexicon over other plug-ins available, Murray said, “For me it’s about versatility. Lexicon is a legendary company in the professional audio world. As new companies pop up, I often explore those as well, but going back to tried and true sounds is what often sounds best. Having both options suits me best. I like how I know what it’s going to sound like. It’s an old friend that I can rely on!”

“We are lucky to work with someone of Nick’s caliber. It truly shows the versatility of our plug-ins when an artist can go from movie work to making a fantastic record using one software suite,” added Noel Larson, Market Manager for Recording, Tour and Portable PA at HARMAN Signal Processing.

Maidstone Studios Upgrades Studio 2 with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 Console

MAIDSTONE, United Kingdom – Maidstone Studios, the UK’s largest independent TV facility, recently completed an HD-upgrade to its Studio 2, which included the installation of a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 digital audio console.
An essential part of the upgrade to HD was the audio system, and with a tight timescale of just under thre weeks to refurbish the studios including a large amount of HD cabling and gallery monitoring, it was paramount that a seamless transition in operations was achieved.

“With a Studer Vista 8 already installed for some years in Studio 1, it made sense to provide commonality of operation across studios so the Vista 5 was a logical choice,” said Rowland Kinch, CEO of Maidstone Studios. ”We’ve been very happy with Studer and the support they give us. We love the Vista’s instant snapshot functions and it’s a great live production platform for us. The consoles also share common hardware and cards, so support is made much easier for us.”

Kinch also praises the new VistaMix automatic microphone mixing software update for the Vista console, which has made a huge difference for the sound teams on unscripted panel and game shows such as Victory TV’s “Draw It” and ITV’s ”Take Me Out.”

“The Sound Supervisors love having this inbuilt facility at their fingertips, and think it’s fantastic!”
Kinch concluded, “Having the Vista consoles has really enhanced our opportunities and abilities to win program productions from major broadcast organisations who are familiar with the Studer platforms.”

SIM2 Miami Road Show Exceeds Expectations

Miramar, Florida—July 2013—SIM2’s top dealer partners attending the SIM2 Road Show in Miami are calling the first two days of the three-day tour a resounding success. The exclusive event is designed to provide dealers with an unprecedented opportunity to view some of the company’s most advanced technological achievements to date—the CINEMAQUATTRO, SIRIO, M.150, LUMIS, NERO, and the limited-edition FUORISERIE home cinema projectors.

Bill Petters, of Sound Components, in Miami, said of the event, “What impressed me the most is the wide range of products that SIM2 has come to market with. Not only are the products extremely high performance, but they can be installed by integrators like our company, and are practical for end users—simple solutions with various price points. depending on the level of performance a client wants to get into. SIM2 has a very nice, wide range, from entry level to state of the art—it’s a great solution for us.” Bill’s favorite was the M.150. “The depth of field, color saturation, black levels, and brightness were simply outstanding.”

Stan Beran, of Sound Performance, in Miami, said, “First, I’m impressed with the amount of projectors on display, starting from a couple-hundred thousand to things more reasonable, around 10 to 12 thousand. What really knocked me out is the [M.150] LED projector, for people who like fine lines and details—it’s probably the best one I’ve ever seen. If you want the punch and attack, having the double stack SIRIO is a knockout for people—even one by itself is very bright.”

SIM2's CINEMAQUATTRO, a 4K 3-Chip DLP Home Cinema Projector

The star of the show was SIM2’s CINEMAQUATTRO, a 4K DLP 3-Chip Home Cinema Projector. Some of the key specifications are: three 4K (4096 x 2160), 1.38” DLP chipsets, up to 25,000 ANSI Lumens; Triple Flash 3D Technology; SIM2’s Exclusive High Contrast and Colorimetry Profiles; a user-replaceable Xenon Bubble Lamp; remote monitoring and so much more.

“With a third day yet to be completed, we have already exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance and excitement for this event,” said Maurizio Cini, CEO and President of SIM2. “Our guests in Miami were among the first in the U.S. to witness the amazing power of full 4K resolution from the CINEMAQUATTRO, along with a comprehensive demonstration of our full line of solutions. Based on the feedback from those attending, and building on the anticipated success of additional tour stops, we expect to see a dramatic growth in business over the remainder of 2013—even surpassing the positive trend we’ve seen in the past quarter.”

The 2013 SIM2 Road Show represents an extraordinary business opportunity for SIM2 partners, with the opportunity for one-on-one meetings with key company executives, crucial forecasting information and special product demonstrations. The U.S. portion of the tour includes additional stops in Los Angeles, August 20-22, and in New York City, September 3-5.

Clearwing Kicks out the Jams at Summerfest with L-ACOUSTICS

World’s largest music festival heard via K1, KARA, KUDO and ARCS WIFO

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — Recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest music festival for the past 15 consecutive years, Milwaukee’s Summerfest truly knows how to throw a party. Serving up a smorgasbord of brats, brews and bands — over 700 national and regional acts performing on 11 stages — this year’s “Big Gig” at Henry W. Maier Festival Park on the city’s Lake Michigan shoreline drew more than 840,000 visitors over its 11-day run in late June and early July.

Robert Juliat Cyrano Followspots Help Light Up “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular” on the Fourth of July

It wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without the “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular,” and Robert Juliat Cyrano followspots helped light up the annual event, which was televised live from the Charles River Esplanade.

The free outdoor concert marked its fortieth anniversary. The event draws over 500,000 people each year to the Boston and Cambridge sides of the Charles River. Audiences wait with anticipation to hear the Boston Pops’ now classic rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with real cannons, church bells and fireworks; “The Stars and Stripes Forever” with ceremonial American flag drop and confetti shot; and watch a final explosive fireworks array. This year musical guests included Susan Tedeschi, Ellis Hall, Howie Day, Ayla Brown, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Keith Lockhart conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra.

“The event was a lot of fun to be part of,” says lighting designer Christopher Landy of Vibrant Design LLC. “Summer shows like this one can be challenging because they start in the daylight and end at night, so you need to use spots that are able to compete with the sun.”

Landy utilized two Cyranos obtained from Capron. “The talent looked great,” Landy says. “The spots fields are perfectly even and consistent and they’re very easy to operate – Which is more important than you think. It makes it easy to balance and easy for the operator and myself to subtly tweek levels.”

Cyrano is a compact and efficient 2500-watt HMI followspot with a high-performance quartz condenser optical system. It features a 100% closing iris in a removable cassette; 100% closing dimmer; B-size gobo holder ; and 6-way boomerang color changer with removable filter frames.

Landy reports that he uses Robert Juliat lighting exclusively these days – even on less spectacular shows. “When I am lighting A-List talent, I need an A-List fixture Juliat provides that,” he says. “The camera sees every imperfection and flutter, an inconsistent field is not an option. In fact, on a recent comedy shoot, I had to swap out three competitors’ spots after the first day of taping. They just weren’t cutting it. With the Juliat spots it was like a new show. Shows with Juliats equal happy clients”.

About Robert Juliat
