Joe W. Brown Park’s Post-Katrina Restoration includes Community R-Series Loudspeakers

Joe W. Brown Memorial Park in Eastern New Orleans is a 135-acre park with an activities center, in-door heated pool, ball fields, picnic shelters, play equipment and a large nature center. After sustaining substantial damage during Hurricane Katrina, Joe W. Brown Park was restored with help from Nike, the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Brees Dream Foundation. As part of the restoration, the city of New Orleans added Victory Field, a new football stadium, and restored an existing track and field facility.

Both facilities include new sound systems, designed and installed by Technical Services Group of Baton Rouge with Community R-Series Loudspeaker Systems. “You really can’t go wrong with Community R-Series,” said Patrick Meek of Technical Services Group. “They’re built to project crisp, intelligible sound and withstand any weather conditions.”

Meek chose Community R2 loudspeakers for Victory Field and Community R.5s for the smaller Track and Field. Powered by QSC amplifiers and using an Ashly Protea DSP, both designs have the loudspeakers on top of the press box covering the home bleachers, field and cross-field area which includes visitor seating at Victory Field.

The facilities are open to many different groups so Meek designed both systems to be user-friendly. He placed a handheld and headset microphone inside each press box and added wireless mics for the referees. “The city officials were very pleased with the systems,” Meek said, “they’re easy to use and they sound great!”

Circuit of the Americas Hosts Formula One with Community

Community R-Series at Main Grandstand

Austin’s Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is America’s first purpose-built Formula One racing track. Completed in late 2012, COTA’s campus includes the Main Grandstand with VIP Lounge, the Grand Plaza with food court and shops, a 251 foot (77m) Observation Tower and the Pit Building with an adjacent Media Center. The track includes bleachers at several locations to supplement the Grandstand seating.

Although the Formula One and other races are the site’s main attractions, A/V systems play major supporting roles. Architect Tilke’s Formula One designs include race control systems and basic audio and video systems but Circuit of the Americas chose to upgrade and/or supplement the A/V systems in many areas.

Circuit of the Americas retained consultant Acoustic Dimensions for many of the venue’s networks and for the audio and video system upgrades. Acoustic Dimensions value engineered the low-voltage systems and, in cooperation with Hughes Associates, led the effort to comply with the mass notification code. AT&T, the overall campus technology contractor, chose Ford AV to assist in the A/V systems field design and installation.

The original audio specification consisted primarily of paging horns for race audio and public announcements. To meet COTA’s request for A/V upgrades, Acoustic Dimensions and Ford AV set up a loudspeaker performance evaluation for Circuit of the Americas’ management personnel. Conventional paging horns were used as a baseline and two upgraded systems were offered for comparison. Circuit of the Americas selected Community’s R-Series, for their overall performance and sound quality, their reputation for long-term outdoor durability and their high sensitivity (efficiency) which reduced amplifier requirements and helped Circuit of the Americas meet its budget guidelines.

Community R2s, R.5HPs and WET Series loudspeakers are used in the Main Grandstand, on the track and in other outdoor areas. Community Distributed Design Series ceiling and surface-mount loudspeakers are used in the Main Grandstand, the Grandstand VIP Lounge and the Pit Building. Community VERIS2 loudspeakers are used in the Media Center with the video systems. Audio electronics include Crown amplifiers, BSS London DSPs and Soundcraft digital mixing consoles. Acoustic Dimension’s Craig Janssen says “Circuit of the Americas is very pleased with the choice of Community loudspeakers for these systems”.

ELAN g! Gives Apple®-Enthusiast Total Control Over His 18,000-Square Foot Home

The Musil family members love using an iPad or iPhone for scheduling, playing games and staying connected to one another. So when homeowner John Musil decided he wanted simple consolidated control of the security, lighting and A/V components in his 18,000-square foot home in the Arcadia-area of Phoenix, Arizona, he had to be able to do it all from his favorite Apple devices. Now that the home has an ELAN g! Entertainment and Control System, the Musil family can easily control every major subsystem of their home with the push of a button!

Musil first hired Scottsdale-based builder Sage Luxury Homes to build his dream home that features a media room, game room, fitness area, basketball court and a guesthouse. Musil then brought Phoenix-based integrator Digital Home Lifestyles on board to install a control system that would offer complete control over every area of the home.

“When the homeowner told me that his top priority was to have total control over his home through his iPhone and iPad, I instantly thought of the ELAN g! system,” said Jeff Beall, President & CEO of Digital Home Lifestyles. “Not only is the ELAN g! system one of the most affordable control solutions on the market today, but its also one of the most capable, integrating with an endless number of third-party components and having the ability to scale to any size installation. Just as a robust wireless networking infrastructure is crucial to any new home, an easy-to-use control system like ELAN g! becomes the central nervous system that makes all the home’s technology accessible to every person who might need to use it.”

Digital Home Lifestyles equipped the home with an ELAN g! system that gives the Musil family control over lighting, surveillance, security, irrigation systems, audio, video and more. The g! system can be accessed through a variety of different interfaces including the homeowner’s iPhones and iPads, three ELAN TS10 touch screens and a whopping 25 ELAN Z100 keypads for AV functions. The installation included 10 Samsung LED LCD TVs throughout the house, three Apple TV® systems, five Apple iPod docks and two Samsung Blu-Ray Players.

Digital Home Lifestyles also installed a total of 10 Speco Technologies cameras for surveillance, and the Musil family is now able to enjoy 24 zones of high quality audio through eight Niles loudspeakers, six Monitor Audio outdoor speakers and a Source Technologies LCR flat panel speaker. The g! system controls the functions of all the major rooms in the house, including the guesthouse where visitors can use g! interfaces to control the lighting, audio and video without any instructions necessary.

“What initially made the ELAN g! system so attractive was the idea that I could easily keep an eye on the house while I’m at the office or on vacation,” said Musil. “Digital Home Lifestyles installed a number of surveillance cameras both inside and outside the house, including one on the entry gate, so it’s very simple for me to check in on the house whenever I’m away for an extended period of time. What makes the system so incredible is that the entire family is able to use the g! system without training. We’re thrilled that such an easy-to-use system can perform so many different functions throughout our house.”

Most of the technology that makes all this possible is located in a professional rack unit located in a storage closet on the lower level, which effectively hides all the unsightly black boxes typical of a home entertainment system. The rack includes an ELAN HC12 controller, three ELAN S128P AV Controller/Amplifiers, an ELAN S1616A Multi-zone Amplifier, an ELAN S86P Multi-Room A/V controller, an IC Realtime 16-Channel Security Camera DVR, a Rotel amplifier and Krell amplifier, networking components from Motorola, Netgear and Pakedge, and a networked Sony Blu-Ray player.

Kensington Church Relies on FOR-A Video Switcher While Transitioning to Full HD Production

Cypress, CA, July 29, 2013 – Kensington Church had been using their existing switcher for years when they decided to upgrade to a FOR-A HVS-390HS video switcher, but the move came sooner than expected when the current switcher gave out right before Easter weekend. The metro Detroit-based church called in local systems integrator Advanced Lighting & Sound to gut out the old equipment, install the new HVS-390HS switcher, have it operational for service the next morning, and show a volunteer how to use it. Thanks to the integrator’s expertise, some hard work, and the user friendly HVS-390HS switcher, Kensington Church went on to produce hiccup-free holiday weekend services and has been relying on the switcher ever since.

“Some of the best things about the HVS-390HS switcher are that it’s simple to use, intuitive, and offers great affordability,” said Dennis Andersen, Kensington Church’s Technical Director. “Our volunteer operator learned how to use the switcher in a matter of a few hours, just in the nick of time for Sunday service.”

Kensington Church has five locations – three are portable campuses and two are in permanent locations. The HVS-390HS switcher is installed in the main church’s control room backstage.

According to Andersen, the flexibility of the switcher is crucial to meet the production needs of Kensington Church. The church uses 2D and 3D effects, streams its services on a bi-weekly basis, employs IMAG (image magnification) in its 1,400-person auditorium and shows the services in the chapel overflow room.

Andersen explained, “We’ve really appreciated the flexibility of the switcher. There are so many assignable buttons and aux capabilities. We’ve been able to do a number of modifications based on our needs. Our production team has really relied on the front control panels that allow us to do secondary outputs at our remote campuses.”

Another key consideration in choosing the FOR-A switcher was its ability to accommodate mixed inputs. Because the church is in the process of upgrading to HD, having a switcher that’s compatible with both SD-SDI and HD inputs was a necessity.

“With Kensington Church migrating to HD, we needed to find a cost-effective, high-quality switcher that fit their needs,” said Bob Sullivan, President of Advanced Lighting & Sound. “FOR-A’s HVS-390HS solution was ideal. The switcher has a plug and play set up, so it’s really convenient for the church to have during their HD transition. And with its mix effects, aux, and keyer capabilities, it offers the features the church needs, at an affordable price.”

Wolfson and Waves Audio Partner to Bring Exceptional Sound Quality to Mobile Devices Using MaxxAudio® Technologies

Edinburgh, UK, July 26, 2013 – Wolfson Microelectronics plc, a global leader in the design and development of mixed-signal semiconductor devices and audio solutions for consumer electronics products, and Waves Audio, a world-leading developer of software-based audio signal processing tools, have today announced a partnership to join forces and help bring exceptional audio quality and extended playback time to laptops, tablets and mobile devices.

The partnership integrates Waves MaxxAudio® Mobile sound processing tools, which are based on the same professional tools used in recording studios the world over, onto Wolfson’s advanced WM0011 audio digital signal processor (DSP) to achieve high quality music playback; rich, clear audio that matches the 1080p graphics when watching movies; and dramatically enhanced audio performance from the small speakers of a portable device, while preserving battery life.

Wolfson’s WM0011 dramatically improves audio playback time by enabling the device to manage all audio processing algorithms efficiently and autonomously, allowing the host processor to ‘sleep’ for up to seven out of eight seconds of audio. The WM0011 provides a rich portfolio of audio processing options that can be integrated into a device with no additional software development.

Waves Audio, a recipient of a technical GRAMMY® award, utilizes their professional audio processing heard on countless hit records, major motion pictures and top-selling video games, on mobile devices in the form of MaxxAudio Mobile, delivering outstanding audio performance whether users are watching a movie, listening to music, playing a game online, or using voice communication, enabling users to hear sound the way it was meant to be heard.

Eddie Sinnott, VP of Portfolio, Strategy and Marketing at Wolfson Microelectronics said: “Waves is globally-renowned for its industry-leading technology in the professional audio market, and we are delighted to partner with them to deliver this exciting new audio solution for portable devices. At Wolfson we are committed to enabling our customers to achieve the highest quality audio in their products, and this partnership helps to bring professional studio-quality audio to portable devices while extending playback time. With audio processing demands continuing to grow, this solution will allow OEMs to further differentiate their products in the market place.”

Wolfson’s exceptional audio hardware, together with Waves professional audio software, set new sonic standards for the mobile market. While more and more audio content is being experienced via mobile devices, the inherent physical limitations of these devices present the most arduous engineering challenges. Masque Sound Swings to the Beat for Chicago’s Theatrical Event of the Season, The Jungle Book

Equipment Package Captures Indian-Inspired Music to Enchant Audiences of All Ages

CHICAGO, JULY 29, 2013 – This summer The Jungle Book has swung into Chicago’s famed Goodman Theatre, enchanting audience members with its exuberant song and dance routines set against the backdrop of the Indian jungle. To give this new stage musical’s sound an authentic feel, Sound Designer Ray Nardelli turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, for a custom audio equipment package.

The Jungle Book is a music- and movement-filled adventure chronicling young Mowgli’s coming-of-age in the Indian jungle. Tony Award-winning Director Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation is based on Nobel Laureate Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 collection of stories and Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film, presenting the movie’s best-loved songs in wholly new Indian-inspired arrangements.

Nardelli’s involvement with The Jungle Book began in February, when Zimmerman and Music Director Doug Peck held a music workshop that brought together six Chicago swing/jazz musicians and six Indian instrumentalists playing sitars, tablas and carnatic violins to fuse songs and styles to create a sound unique to this production.

“The challenges in designing the sound for The Jungle Book were two-fold,” says Nardelli. “Not only did we have to balance these Indian instruments with Western jazz instruments, but we also had to integrate the musicians into the show by moving them from the orchestra pit to the stage for certain songs. As a result, the channel count of the show skyrocketed to a whopping 140.”

Moving the musicians between the orchestra pit and the stage several times during the show required a highly mobile audio package. To meet this challenge, Masque Sound created a custom solution for The Jungle Book that adapted the microphones into the wireless. According to Nardelli, “Blending the music with the action on stage was critical to the overall atmosphere of the show. Masque Sound’s work in micing up the Indian instruments, really helped make this possible. When they came on board, I knew we were going to have all of the expert service and equipment we needed to achieve this.”

For The Jungle Book, Masque Sound provided a custom Sennheiser wireless microphone package as well as a Yamaha CL5 digital mixing console. The company also supplied the show with an extensive speaker package from Meyer, including 13 M’elodie speakers, three Galileo UPMs for front fill, two 600-HP high-powered subwoofers and two Rio 32×16 boxes (one for the actors and one for the musicians’ pit). Masque Sound also supplied UPMs for each of Goodman Theatre’s 16 opera boxes, as the boxes were too far off axis. In addition, Masque Sound worked with Nardelli and David Naunton, the Goodman’s House Audio Supervisor to provide frequency coordination for the show to ensure all the frequencies in use did not cause signal interference.

“Working with Masque Sound always takes a huge weight off my shoulders,” adds Nardelli. “I have worked with them many times in the past and I just trust them. Their services are really the best in the industry. They are very conscientious of the details, and always take great care to ensure we are happy with their services.”

The Jungle Book is playing through August 18 at Goodman Theatre, located at 170 North Dearborn in Chicago. For more information, call (312) 443-3800 or visit www.GoodmanTheatre.org.

Iconyx Makes Things Clear for MannKind Pharmaceuticals

Danbury, CA – July 2013… Besides their corporate headquarters in southern California, MannKind Pharmaceuticals maintains two other campuses, including their technical operations team, located in Danbury, CT. It’s a busy campus, hosting several hundred employees involved in the company’s manufacturing, engineering, and quality assurance divisions.

The campus’  central meeting point is a large, multipurpose room used for everything from lunches to corporate meetings and all types of presentations. It’s a bright, airy, and welcoming space, but as Richard Trombitas of New York-based Cardone, Solomon and Associates explains, the room has long been an acoustical challenge.

“It’s a really nice looking space, but not great for spoken word intelligibility,” says Trombitas. “It’s got a fairly high ceiling, a wall of windows, and lots of reflective surfaces.” Colortone AV’s Joe Lemischak adds, “they had an old distributed system that had probably been installed when the room was built.”

According to Traci Centofanti, Mannkind’s Director of Information Technology, the room has long been problematic. “The system that was in here originally never quite did what it was intended to do,” Centofonti says. “The coverage was very spotty – some places in the room sounded okay, but if you moved a few feet over, you could barely make out what the presenter was saying.”

The solution was easily realized with a single pair of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steered array loudspeakers. Dual ICX7-II stacks on either side of one wall can easily provide even coverage all the way to the back of the room.

“We had the columns custom-painted in metallic gray to match the room,” says Lemischak. “You can barely see them.” Custom mounts were designed to integrate the columns with the room’s existing structure.

Centofanti says the improvement was immediate and dramatic. “We’ve had numerous comments from people about the difference in the way things sound in there now,” she observes. “People are more involved and more attentive in presentations – they can finally hear what’s being said.”

grandMA2 Supports Boston Strong Benefit Concert for ECLPS

A packed house raised the roof at TD Garden – and raised substantial funds for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing – at the Boston Strong concert May 30. The five-and-a-half hour show, headlined by top performers in music and comedy, utilized a lighting rig and grandMA2 consoles supplied by East Coast Lighting & Production Services (ECLPS). A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of MA Lighting in North America.

Proceeds from the benefit concert went to One Fund Boston, the compensation fund established to help bombing victims by Gov. Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino.

ECLPS’ Robert Morrissey worked with lighting designer Butch Allen to build a rig around the company’s inventory of fixtures. He also quickly worked out a deal with Brian Dowd of A.C.T Lighting to take speedy delivery of additional grandMA2 full-size and grandMA2 light consoles, boosting the ECLPS roster.

“Programmer extraordinaire Rob Koenig flew in and worked tirelessly to have the rig all programmed and ready to go and ran a grandMA2 for comedians Lenny Clarke, Steven Wright and Steve Sweeney,” Morrissey reports. The grandMA2 was also used by Jesse Blevins, who lit New Kids on the Block; Greg Maltby, who lit the band Boston; Aaron Swetland for country star Jason Aldean; Ephraim Sosna for J. Geils Band; and Martin Favorite for Extreme. Lighting designer Cosmo Wilson tapped the grandMA for Aerosmith; lighting designer Tom Wagstaff programmed for performances by James Taylor, Carole King and Jimmy Buffett.

“The concert went off without a hitch, thanks to all of the great people who participated in the event,” says Morrissey.
