PixelFLEX LED Curtains Deliver Sharp Video Images During Country Music Award Festival’s Third Annual Music City Gives Back Concert

PixelFLEX LED Curtains recently provided sharp video images onstage during the third annual Music City Gives Back (MCGB) concert headlined by Rodney Atkins at the start of the Country Music Award Festival in downtown Nashville. This year’s free concert, attended by 12,000 passionate country music fans, featured artists Josh Thompson, Jana Kramer and Justin Moore and benefitted relief efforts for the victims of the Oklahoma City tornadoes.

PixelFLEX provided 12 20mm panels for this year’s concert to deliver clear video content and effects to enrich the musical performances. This is the second year PixelFLEX’s industry-leading LED screens were used during the MCGB show, as the video curtains offer optimal flexibility and ease of use, according to event organizers.

“We love using PixelFLEX because they’re extremely easy to load in and tear down,” said Justin Hinote of Hill Entertainment Group, Atkins’ management team. “They store easier than any regular screen that we can get and they look great on stage; they made downtown Broadway really light up.”

Sunlight can be a concern for daytime concerts with screens looking faded or washed out on stage, but even with MCGB’s start time of 6p.m. Hinote was confident PixelFLEX would provide a superior product. “Having used the panels in the past, I knew visibility wouldn’t be an issue and I wasn’t disappointed. The clarity was super all day, even in direct sunlight, and the picture improved as the night went on,” said Hinote.

Easy to operate and set up – videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection – PixelFLEX LED Curtains are available from low resolution to high resolution, allowing users to demonstrate simple effects or elaborate videos.

During the charitable event, the panels were arranged behind center stage to showcase videos, static images and effects throughout all four performances. PixelFLEX curtains were chosen specifically as the backdrop for the production to “blow up” and visually enhance the show for the audience.

“It’s great to use PixelFLEX screens when you’re designing the stage because they offer a lot of flexibility in the imaging and always look great,” said Hinote in closing.

Expanded HRS Control Website Makes Its Debut

High Resolution Systems has launched a new website for HRS Control (www.HRScontrol.com) with increased features and improved functionality.

“It was time to upgrade. HRS Control’s old website didn’t even list all of our products,” says HRS’s Drew Taylor. “The new, improved website is a better example of who we are now. It’s a digital storefront that represents all that HRS Control has to offer, and we designed it for easy customer navigation.”

The new home page presents a bold, graphical slideshow that demonstrates the company’s dedication to “control systems made easy” for applications ranging from live events to executive boardrooms. Below the slideshow, a simple three-step process reveals how to configure UDC software, load it to the new Raptor server and connect with iPads and popular tablets. Just click on any step to learn more about the procedures.

Section heads direct customers to comprehensive information about the company, its equipment and users. “Products” provides details about more than a dozen categories of gear. “Markets” spotlights customers in rental and staging, broadcast, live events, corporate boardrooms, military and government, trade shows and houses of worship. “Media” relates customer stories and shares recent press releases; videos offer info on product demos, HRS Control’s presence at trade shows, and training. And “About Us” tells the HRS story from its founding.

In addition, customers can sign up for an account and, once approved, log in to the website to download UDC and other software to test and use. They can also log in and download all of HRS Control’s revamped manuals and Quickstart guides. A new section gives resellers worldwide increased support with access to downloads of logos and marketing and press materials to aid their sales efforts.

Customers and prospects are also encouraged to sign up for a newsletter providing the latest updates on UDC software and what’s happening at HRS Control.

DK-Technologies Releases New LTC Engine for the PT5300 Master Sync Generator at IBC 2013

DK-Technologies is using IBC 2013 as the platform to release its latest LTC and 3G additions to the field proven PT5300 Master Sync Generator (Hall 8, Stand B60).

In master sync applications, the new LTC fallback function allows the PT5300 to align with the internal high precision clock – a feature that is of huge importance to users working in situations where GPS coverage is patchy or inadequate.

In slave sync applications the LTC engine enables the PT5300 to genlock to VITC time-code derived from the black-burst input.

The new LTC engine will be shipping as an integral part of the PT5300 by September 2013. The improved functions are available to existing PT5300 users as an upgrade module.

DK-Technologies has also announced that the PT5300 Master Sync Generator and its change-over companion product, the PT5211, will both be 3G compatible by the end of 2013.

“With years of experience and thousands of field hours under the PT5300 hood, we feel that 3G is a natural progression,” says DK-Technologies’ COO, Jacob Christensen.

The 3G upgrade will be available as an optional hardware module and will be backwards compatible with all existing PT5300 and PT5211 units.

DK-Technologies DK Meter Goes ‘All In’ for IBC 2013

DK-Technologies has given its DK Meter software a comprehensive revamp so that it now incorporates Picture Preview and SMPTE timecode reading. And, in a move that will be enormously beneficial to broadcasters, it has also completely removed complex license structures allowing full access to all software features to any DK Meter user.

Uffe Kjems, Product Marketing Director for DK-Technologies, says: “By removing complex license structures, we have made it possible for all DK Meter users to access any of the software features available today. The change, which amounts to a significant increase in functionality and value, applies to any meter in the DK Meter range. Existing users can download the new software free of charge from our website: www.dk-technologies.com.”

The new software, which will be on show at IBC 2013 (Hall 8, Stand E60), also allows 3G SDI video streams to be previewed on the DK Meter screen for instant check or permanent video display.

“Broadcasters need the ability to preview the 3G SDI Video stream and, for DK-Technologies, incorporating this feature into our DK Meter software was an obvious progression,” Kjems adds. “Achieving this was technically challenging but we can now offer our users the ability to measure, monitor and preview the de-embedded SDI audio stream. Picture preview is a very useful additional feature as it can be used to quickly check the SDI video stream and is also handy when the DK Meter is being used as a mini video monitor.”

Additionally, the new software features SMPTE timecode reading for instant view and Logging against timecode. This gives all DK Meter users an easy and accurate way of addressing relevant loudness corrections and actions.

Finally, the DK Meter has undergone a significant facelift, making it much clearer to read and much more user friendly. The user interface step-up includes larger and smoother fonts and a completely new color scheme, elevating the precision metering of the DK Meter to a new level of readability and resolution.

For more information about the new DK Meter software, please visit DK Technologies at IBC 2013, Hall 8, Stand E.60.

The video section is flanked by an audio toolbox, complete with Bargraphs, Moving Coil Emulation, DK’s proprietary StarFish™ display technology, FFT spectrum analysis and much more. Ethix Management Appoints Doug Maddison At Technical Director

Event production specialist Ethix Management has marked an exceptionally successful 12 month trading period by appointing Doug Maddison to the position of Technical Director.

The company, which produces a wide range of events from product launches and outdoor festivals to corporate hospitality, has recently undergone a major corporate restructure, and Maddison’s appointment is the next step in that process.

Paul Jones, founder and Managing Director of Ethix Management, explains: “In 2012, Ethix partnered with the Star Events Group to provide technical production, including sound, lighting and power, for the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays around the UK. In order to cope with the additional workload, I took the decision to split the company into two separate entities – Ethix Management, to service our existing clients, and the newly formed Ethix Production Services, to service the Olympic contract.

“Both companies have been incredibly successful and have attracted many new clients and projects, therefore I needed to strengthen the management structure in order to keep up momentum and take the businesses forward into the future.”

Doug Maddison, who has been with Ethix Management for five years, has now taken on responsibility for running the technical side of the business, leaving Jones free to concentrate on winning new contracts.

“Doug is highly experienced in the technical side of event production and is the ideal person to help drive the company forward,” Paul Jones adds. “I am confident that with Doug as part of the management team we can continue to grow both companies and deliver the same high levels of quality and service that we are renowned for.”

Ethix is currently involved in a number of high profile productions around the world. It recently provided event production for the Big IF Rally in London’s Hyde Park and for the Get Reading Festival, which attracted thousands of people to London’s Trafalgar Square. Its next major project will be Now or Never, an art installation project organised by the Vienna Tourist Board, which takes place simultaneously in Vienna, London and Berlin in September 2013.

Ellie Goulding Switches To DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Microphone

Award-winning singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ellie Goulding has switched to a DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone after trying it for the first time at the Chime for Change concert, which took place in London in June.

Currently touring in the USA to promote her second album, Halcyon, Goulding is now using the a wireless version of the d:facto Vocal Microphone for all of her concerts.

Goulding’s Front of House sound engineer Oz Bagnall and monitor engineer James Neale were introduced to the d:facto Vocal Microphone by Dave Kay at Adlib Audio. He recommended it as an ideal replacement for the hardwired microphone she had been using on her previous European tour. DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network was able to arrange a demo just prior to the Chime for Change concert, and Bagnall and Neale were so impressed by its performance that they bought one.

We both felt it was the best microphone for Ellie,” James Neale says. “She is really happy with it and is now using it for all her live performances.”

Oz Bagnall adds: “During Ellie’s European tour we struggled with level and ambient spill on her vocal, so we used a mic that was discontinued several years ago and was only available as a hardwired version. From that point our search was on to find a modern microphone with similar rejection but hopefully with better quality sound. We tried out a lot of different microphones before demoing the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone. Apart from sounding amazing, it was the only microphone that was able to deliver what we wanted in terms of rejection, plus it allowed us to go back to a wireless system which gives Ellie much more scope to move on stage.”

Goulding’s first proper try out with the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone came at the Chime For Change concert, which also featured artists such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Jessie J, Rita Ora and Florence and the Machine. The microphone was supplied via Adlib Audio by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network.

“During the first sound check Ellie did find the change in tonality a little disconcerting because she wasn’t used to it, but we persuaded her to use it for the show and in the end she was very happy with the result,” Oz Bagnall says. “At FOH, the microphone was a huge success as I had all the level I needed and much improved audio quality and clarity. I especially like its flat response and virtually no low end proximity effect.”

Oz Bagnall demoed the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone with a Shure wireless system, but he is now using it with his existing Sennheiser system.

He says: “At Chime for Change our slot in the concert program put us on the side stage so that the main stage could be reset for Beyoncé. This meant that Ellie was in front of and in between the SL main and side PA hangs, which from a sound quality perspective is not an ideal position. However, thanks to the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone, the sound we got in the stadium was great. I was so pleased that we were able to take delivery of the wireless version of the d:facto before Chime for Change – and very grateful for the help Sound Network and Adlib Audio gave us.”

Bob Moog’s Archives Donated To World-Class Facility at Cornell University

Ithaca, NY, July 19, 2013 – Yesterday, Cornell University announced the archives of Dr. Robert A. Moog have found a home at their Sidney Cox Library of Music & Dance, thanks to a generous donation from his widow, Dr. Ileana Grams-Moog.

Dr. Robert A. Moog is the founder of Moog Music, the world’s leading manufacturer of analog synthesizers, and the inventor of the legendary Moog synthesizer. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell in engineering physics in 1965 and was a longtime resident of Trumansburg, N.Y. His personal archive of notes, plans, drawings, recordings and more will be housed in the Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.

“It was Bob‘s wish that his archives be preserved and made accessible to other scientists, inven-tors, engineers and innovators,” Grams-Moog said. “It has been eight years since my husband’s death and I am happy that my gift to Cornell will finally make this rich collection available. Bob would be pleased to know his life’s work is finally being properly preserved so that current and future generations may advance upon his work.”

Cornell has flourished as a center for research in music since the Sidney Cox Library of Music & Dance was founded in 1929, and its extensive holdings include a special focus on historical key-board instruments. It collects heavily in 20th- and 21st-century music of Europe and the United States, including electronic music and music by Cornell composition alumnae.

“We’re thrilled to welcome this donation to Cornell, and we look forward to welcoming resear-chers from all over the world who hope to learn more about Dr. Moog’s life and work, ” said Anne R. Kenney, Carl A. Kroch University Librarian. “We pride ourselves on not only preserving valuable historical knowledge, but providing access to one-of-a-kind, original materials to as many people as possible.”

Dr. Grams-Moog continued, “Cornell is a 150-year-old institution with a long history of steward-ship and dissemination of rare and valuable collections for education and research. Donating Bob’s archives to the university is the best opportunity to preserve and protect them so they will finally be accessible to students and scholars worldwide. In addition, they will be available to future generations long after we’re all gone.”
