NUGEN Audio at IBC2013

At IBC2013, NUGEN Audio will be displaying a range of industry-leading innovations for loudness correction that offer a smarter approach to complying with new loudness regulations whilst maintaining the quality of broadcast audio. An optional upgrade to the LMB loudness management and correction batch processor and a new multichannel monitoring tool introduce much requested ingest and playout functionality.

NEW — Optional MXF Support for LMB Batch-Processing Loudness Tool
At IBC2013, NUGEN Audio will display its LMB system, an offline file-based loudness analysis and correction program designed for rapid assessment and correction of files for loudness and true-peak content, compliant with ITU-R BS. 1770 and EBU R128-based specifications. With a drag-and-drop interface and/or specific watched folders, LMB saves operator time by automatically handling the process of checking and conforming files to multiple broadcast criteria. Now, with a new optional feature, LMB will analyze and correct MXF files without converting them to WAV format. With the MXF option, LMB saves corrected files to MXF format and preserves all other data in the file. It supports OP-Atom and Op1a formats, as well as PCM audio data (including D10-encoded PCM). MXF files containing other operating patterns or audio encoding will be treated as previously.

NEW — MultiMonitor: Stand-Alone 16-Meter Loudness Software
At IBC2013, NUGEN Audio will introduce MultiMonitor, a new stand-alone software program that enables users to monitor loudness and true-peak levels on 16 individual meters. Available for Mac(R) or Windows(R) operating systems, the MultiMonitor software integrates with audio consoles to measure loudness in a variety of situations, from live TV or radio broadcasts to complex post-production mixes. MultiMonitor’s 16 individual meters can combine to monitor up to 96 channels of audio simultaneously. Each meter can be formatted to mono, stereo, or 5.1 surround sound, with the ability to show both a LUFS/LKFS momentary and true-peak display in a single window. Grouping is possible by color-coding meters on each channel. The software is fully compliant with the CALM Act, ITU-R BS. 1770, ATSC A/85, EBU R128, and other specific standards worldwide.

NEW — VisLM: Visual Loudness Metering Plug-in With Timecode Feature
NUGEN Audio’s visual loudness metering plug-in, VisLM, now includes a timecode feature, making it possible to relate the loudness parameters directly to timecode references. This gives audio engineers and editors a clear frame-accurate position for any alerts, true-peak overs, maximum values, and other indicators to picture. VisLM is available in the Avid(R) AAX format and in a 64-bit OS X(R) version and will now also include support for 64-bit iLok protection for AAX, VST, and audio units.

VisLM includes a dialog gate option that allows automatic measurement of dialog sections within the source material. Measurements can be written to automation tracks so that elements such as the loudness profile and true-peak clips can be seen against the waveform in the digital audio workstation timeline for diagnostic referencing.

With detailed, objective loudness measurement, history, and logging facilities, VisLM provides an easy-to-use ITU, ATSC, and EBU standard-compliant way to measure, compare, and contrast loudness during production, broadcast, and post-production, either on the fly or for entire sections of audio. Offering true-peak level metering (inter-sample accurate level monitoring), loudness range (to help decide if and how much dynamic compression to apply), momentary “instantaneous loudness” for mixing by ear, short-term loudness (three-second time window), and program loudness (long-term integrated loudness measurement), VisLM is a comprehensive tool that helps audio professionals cut through the complexity of loudness compliance.

VisLM is available in two versions, VisLM-C (compact) and VisLM-H (history). Both versions are available in 2.0 and 5.1 formats.

LM-Correct: Stand-Alone Loudness Tool
LM-Correct is ideal for rapid, intuitive correction in situations where time is limited, providing an automatic method of rapidly conforming audio to current loudness standards. LM-Correct can be used as a one-stop loudness correction solution to fix audio that has not been mixed with loudness standards in mind, or in conjunction with a real-time loudness meter such as VisLM to fine-tune audio that has been mixed to loudness requirements from the outset. LM-Correct can also be used as a final “back-stop” processor, ensuring that finished files are within specification and performing a fix where errors are found.

ISL: Inter-Sample True-Peak Limiter
The NUGEN Audio ISL Inter-Sample True-Peak Limiter is designed for the control of peak levels in audio signals from mono to 5.1. Unlike traditional approaches to limiting, ISL offers a true brick-wall solution, measuring inter-sample peaks and allowing the user to define the true-peak limit of the audio output (rather than the more traditional threshold control at which limiting begins to take effect).

Easy to use and totally transparent, ISL is based on the standardized true-peak algorithms of ITU-R BS. 1770 and related standards, and it is suitable for the control of audio for post-production and broadcast applications. True-peak limiting can also be used to ensure that downstream codecs such as MP3 and AAC do not introduce distortion into the signal. While ISL is designed for limiting relatively dynamic high-quality audio, it can also be used to hard-limit and reduce dynamic range considerably if required.

FOH Engineer James Dunkley Chooses Waves Plugins for Anthrax, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Others

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, July 15, 2013 — Front-of-house engineer James Dunkley (Anthrax, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Amon Amarth) is part of a growing number of young cutting-edge live engineers turning to live tools from Waves Audio.

Dunkley notes, “All of my effects are Waves. On the last run with Anthrax, I came to rely on the Waves V-EQ4 Vintage Equalizer and the CLA-76 on the lead vocal. Joey [Belladonna, Anthrax lead vocalist] is particularly loud, so I like to use a nice but aggressive compressor on him so that I can rein him in into the mix when he’s really going for it. The V-EQ4 is just a nice, musical EQ in that it brings out the characteristic of his voice without sounding too ‘surgical.’ I also use the CLA-76 on backup vocals.”

He continues, describing his workflow: “I am currently running three separate instances of Waves Renaissance Reverb – one at about 1.6 seconds for the snare, another at 2.4 seconds for the toms (to make them sound massive, as obviously they’re not played as much as the snare, so when they come in I want them in like a ton of bricks!), and the last one at about 3 seconds as a sort of vocal wash. I also buss the lead vocal out to a Waves H-Delay, switching it in and out on the channel sends. The H-Delay was actually a massive surprise, because you do end up thinking, ‘How different can one delay be from another?,’ but sonically, the H-Delay is something else. I have a stereo group for the drum kit (apart from the kick and snare), and I put a Waves H-Comp across as kind of a parallel bus compressor in two busses. It tightens up the kit nicely, and it makes sure I have more consistency on fast tom rolls while ensuring each drum punches through the guitars. I also run a Waves C4 over a stereo guitar bus that all my guitars go through. I am almost using this as an overall EQ, as I can cut the extreme lows, bring up the sparkle in the top end and tighten up the low mid on the typically Anthrax ‘chuggy’-sound parts. The compression on the drum and guitar busses just really tightens things up and makes sure everything stays in its place within the mix so my vocal can ride on top. Basically my mix is pretty much Waves-dependent and just adds the character and control I need to mix a band like Anthrax on a digital console.”

James Dunkley is part of the growing trend among live sound professionals who are making the move to the next-generation workflow with WavesLive. Visit www.waves.com and www.waveslive.com for more information.

Archimedia Inks Reseller Deal With Front Porch Digital

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — July 16, 2013 — Archimedia Technology, a new company whose technology and applications bridge the gap between content producers and their archives without loss of quality, today announced a reseller agreement with Front Porch Digital, the global leader in migrating, managing, and monetizing large and complex media content. Under the agreement, Front Porch Digital customers will be able to purchase the Archimedia Reference Player, Archimedia HD and 4K SDI cards, and proprietary Archimedia test patterns from Front Porch Digital in conjunction with Front Porch Digital products. The partnership means that, for the first time, Front Porch Digital customers will be able to play master-grade archive files in all of the formats the company supports through a single reference player.

Archimedia will allow Front Porch Digital to install free trial versions of Archimedia Reference Player on Front Porch Digital products. Front Porch Digital will continue providing primary support for customers who use the Archimedia Reference Player, and Archimedia will provide secondary support. The Front Porch Digital support team also will use the Archimedia Reference Player in all of its support activities.

“The Archimedia founders are three former vice presidents of Front Porch Digital who believe wholeheartedly in Front Porch Digital products. We founded Archimedia because we wanted to complement those products and extend the ease of use and peace of mind they bring to the industry,” said Mark Gray, CEO and president of Archimedia. “Many Archimedia customers own Front Porch Digital products, many of which require special players or SD cards to play sophisticated archival files, so this partnership is a natural fit for both companies. It will enable those customers to work with Front Porch Digital to purchase both companies’ products within a unified sales and support process for maximum convenience and efficiency.”

The partnership will be especially helpful for users of Front Porch Digital’s SAMMAsolo(R) ingest appliance, the latest version of which, SAMMAsolo G4 HD, requires a reference player to play SAMMA(R) JPEG 2000 MXF high-definition files. Earlier versions of SAMMAsolo included a player card (SDI output) for SAMMA JPEG 2000 MXF standard-definition files only, but that card is no longer available. The Archimedia Reference Player and SDI cards will serve all SD and HD needs for Front Porch Digital customers going forward, regardless of the product they’re using.

“This relationship with Archimedia gives our customers, especially archivists who specialize in analog-to-digital migration the first affordable means through which to play their archival files on a single universal player which gives them continuity across the entire life of the asset,” said Rino Petricola, senior vice president and general manager at Front Porch Digital. “We’re also excited about the AXF format and its usefulness for archiving DPX sequences for the movie and postproduction industries. Because Archimedia Reference Player plays DPX sequences, it’s a natural pairing with our DIVArchive 7.1 content storage management system.”

“Archimedia’s unprecedented products, coupled with its model of free software trials and an online store, is the perfect complement to Front Porch Digital’s video migration and management technology, making this partnership a boon not just for our customers, but for the entire industry,” said Mike Knaisch, Front Porch Digital president and CEO. “After working closely with the Archimedia founders during their time at Front Porch Digital, I know firsthand the experience and expertise behind the company, and I’m happy to continue working with such innovative technologists.”

Archimedia will demonstrate the Archimedia Reference Player, Archimedia HD and 4K SDI cards, and proprietary test patterns in Front Porch Digital’s trade show booths in the coming months, starting with IBC2013 on stand 7.D14. More information about Archimedia products is available at www.archimediatech.com.

Muzika InStore Selects Barix as Exclusive IP Audio Playout Vendor

Barix helps Muzika InStore, retailers and other businesses enhance in-store atmosphere and expedite return on investment

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, July 16, 2013 — IP audio specialist Barix is supporting audio streaming and delivery for Muzika InStore, the new Croatia-based in-store audio service that allows customers to manage their own content. Muzika InStore exclusively uses the Barix Exstreamer 100 IP audio device to receive and decode programming at retail stores and businesses, citing exceptional audio quality, reliability, ease of use and low energy consumption.

The Muzika InStore service is a classic “store and forward” operation that includes two in-house developed web applications to support program development and management. The first application, MIT AddSite, gives customers complete freedom to create in-store audio programs that enhance the retail experience or business atmosphere. The second, MIT FTPstats, focuses on network-wide monitoring and troubleshooting. Current clients include KTC d.o.o, a Croatian chain of retail store and restaurants for which Muzika InStore produces 210 weekly promotions and advertisements, and Bluesun hotels and resorts; as well as retail businesses Metro, Emmerzeta, Trgocentar and Trgostil.

Robert Malekovic, CEO of Muzika InStore, says that the Barix devices help to ensure continuous playout of all in-store audio programs, while delivering a quick return on investment for both his company and his in-store clients.

“No operator in the world can guarantee 100 percent availability of the live internet stream, so we developed our ‘forward and play’ operation with Barix so that we do not have to depend on constant connections,” said Malekovic. “Barix devices are extremely reliable for playout and since each device consumes less than 4W of electricity, customers with multiple devices experience a return on investment in less than one year.”

Muzika InStore’s MIT AddSite application assists the creative process, allowing customers to freely and easily add, schedule and delete music, announcements and local advertisements through a central admin section. It also retains all customer information for simple ongoing management, including hours of operation as well as databases, playlists and musical preferences down to specific genres. Users can also generate reports to show proof of play for advertisers.

Once live at a business, the overall system refreshes itself at the same time each day, creates a playlist for the next week and then disconnects from the Internet to save network resources, ensuring that credit card authorization, point of sale systems and other primary retail systems are unaffected.

Malekovic adds that the ease of setup and installation further reduces his cost of investment. Muzika InStore configures the Barix devices for each client, preloading Exstreamers with Barix FTPMP3 firmware and shipping the plug-and-play devices direct to clients. Muzika InStore also preloads USB sticks, which are attached direct to the Exstreamer 100 to provide secondary, local audio source. This is especially helpful upfront to reduce the initial download needs and minimize network congestion. Meanwhile, newly installed devices automatically connect to Muzika InStore’s network.

“We find the new Barix devices on our servers so that the client can immediately start with creation of music programs and management of ads and promos,” said Malekovic. “The devices start and stop playing based on information the client has input within the AddSite application, so there are no manual interactions required by employees of the shop.”
