Only from Calibre UK: the industry’s most powerful LEDView530 switcher/scaler releases new firmware

Robust, accurate and powerful PIP functionality puts Calibre UK ahead of the curve for scaling and switching of LED displays

Calibre UK has further strengthened its LEDView530 scaler/switcher with the addition of new firmware for user selectable and variable picture-in-picture (PIP) flexibility.

“The new PIP function of the LEDView530 scaler/switcher adds the functionality of expensive windowing solutions available from other manufacturers in the market today, but at an affordable price,” explains Tim Brooksbank, Chairman at Calibre UK.

PIP is used for the composition of a single displayed image comprised of background content plus a second windowed input channel, viewed on one single LED videowall. Typically the background content will be computer generated. The LEDView530 supports virtually all sources including Mac and PC and the PIP content is a video feed either direct from a camera or via a vision mixer, typically over 3G or HD-SDI.

“The firmware update is considerably important for smaller installs requiring variable PIP sizes and backgrounds, particularly at smaller facilities such as sports grounds where it gives LEDView530 a significant advantage in allowing users to generate a combined image, with advanced features such as pixel-accurate PIP sizing and PIP fade in/out transitions,” adds Brooksbank.

Significantly, LEDVIew530’s PIP is inserted within the defined output pixel area, so once the overall picture size has been set to suit the LED videowall using Calibre UK’s class-leading per-edge-based left/right/top/bottom sizing mechanism ensuring the PIP is automatically sized proportionately within that defined LED videowall pixel area. This advanced processing makes it very fast & simple to adjust the LEDView530 scaler/switcher for virtually any LED videowall.

“Variable PIP size can be used as a main background, so that a display showing a sports event plus scoreboard or advertising data can be composed. An event may be shown in the top portion of the screen with data below and to the right, or either side of that live image.”

The new firmware for the LEDView530 scaler/switcher is available now. Existing users can take advantage of the firmware update immediately by downloading the update free from www.calibreuk.com.

The LEDView530 was demonstrated integrated with Lighthouse Technologies’ X3 modular 3mm LED screen at InfoComm 13, the largest annual event of the audiovisual communications industry.

— With custom-built classrooms and access to the world-renowned Blackbird Studio, Nashville’s The Blackbird Academy will offer comprehensive instruction and virtually unlimited hands-on access for hundreds of students yearly to the best audio instruction and technology platforms in the industry —

Nashville, TN (July 15, 2013) – In preparation for their first class, Nashville’s The Blackbird Academy got the pro designer’s touch from Robert and Cortney Novogratz, whose handiwork will be seen on Katie Couric’s syndicated daytime TV show Katie on Wednesday, July 17, 2013.

The husband and wife design team, who formerly did business as Sixx Design, are known worldwide from their Bravo docu-series 9 by Design as well as Home by Novogratz on HGTV. The couple have twice been profiled in The New York Times and have been featured in such publications as Real Simple, Better Homes & Gardens, Travel + Leisure, American Way, Oprah, Architectural Digest and Star, among many others.

Located in the heart of Music City, The Blackbird Academy is owned by John McBride and award-winning country recording artist Martina McBride. The school, which has been positioned as the educational gateway to the recording and live sound industries, is spearheaded by co-directors and industry veterans Kevin Becka and Mark Rubel. The Blackbird Academy is based out of Blackbird Studio, Nashville’s premier recording facility and home to top recording artists, producers and engineers. The school will offer an unprecedented level of hands-on education and industry involvement for its students.

“Opening a school has been a dream of mine for a long time,” stated John McBride. “After talking with hundreds of Blackbird Studio interns and hearing about their experiences, I believe we can provide a better and more affordable educational solution than what is currently available, and that offers our students real-world knowledge that they will use moving toward a career of audio recording or live sound engineering. We want to change the world and make it better for the next generation – The Blackbird Academy is just the place to make that happen.”

The Blackbird Academy programs include:

Studio Engineering Program – A 24-week, 700-hour intensive program with classes meeting five days a week, Monday through Friday, with possible weekend workshops. The facilities consist of three recording studios and a large main laboratory/studio dedicated full time to education. The Learning Laboratory seats 30 students and is an audio production space in its own right.

Live Sound Engineering Program – A 24-week, 720-hour intensive program with classes meeting five days a week, Monday through Friday, with possible weekend workshops. The facilities consist of a purpose-built classroom, and students are trained on the latest consoles, PAs and other gear used for touring, medium and small venues and houses of worship.

Company Will Also Exhibit Latest TouchMonitor Audio Metering Solutions

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, JULY 15, 2013 ─ RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to announce that it will be participating in the Africa Loudness Summit taking place July 17 – July 19 at this year’s Mediatech Show in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition, RTW will exhibit its TM3, TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors at the Wild & Marr stands (G30, G38a).

The summit, which features a discussion by Florian Camerer, PLOUD chairman and EBU R-128 co-author, will explore the issue of loudness in Africa—its effect on broadcasters and the potential solutions that various vendors have to offer. RTW will share its expertise in loudness monitoring with a presentation of its range of TouchMonitor loudness meters. The following is a description of the meters that RTW will have on hand:

TM3 and TM3-3G TouchMonitors
Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 and TM3-3G both have a budget-friendly base price, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. They include a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel or, in the case of the TM3-3G, any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G SDI stream used for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G SDI audio. Both also include summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 and TM3-3G are highly appealing compact solutions ideal for editorial offices, edit suites and small control rooms.

Finally, the units on display will be equipped with the new TM3-SWMC Software license, available as an add-on option, which incorporates a moving-coil emulation display.

TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors
RTW will have on display its TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors on display, equipped with the new BLITS instrument option that is part of the new SW20013 software license. The TM7 and TM9, which also include the innovative Magic LRA instrument, feature a seven- and nine-inch touch-sensitive display, respectively, and provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. The system visualizes up to 16 analog and/or digital sources at the same time.

The TM9 is also capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels when the 3G-SDI option is implemented. Along with RTW’s entire TouchMonitor range, the TM7 and TM9 were created to help adhere to all major industry loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-3/1771-1, ATSC A/85 and ARIB.

Alcorn McBride Supports Video Artist Bill Viola’s New Show in London

Alcorn McBride’s A/V Binloop HD players and DVM8500 Digital Video Machines play an artful role in internationally-renowned video artist Bill Viola’s new show at the Blain|Southern Gallery in London. Associates in Media Engineering (AME), a consortium of consultants and a boutique provider of custom solutions for the special venue marketplace, chose the Alcorn McBride equipment for Viola, a longtime customer who has awarded the company preferred vendor status.

“The show, entitled ‘Frustrated Actions and Futile Gestures,’ is a museum-scale exhibition of nine new works comprised from more than 20 newly produced video elements and sound designs,” says Benjamin Kidwell Lein of AME.

Through his work, Viola engages with complex aspects of human experience, including mortality, transience and our persistent, yet ultimately futile attempts to truly and objectively understand ourselves and the meaning of our brief lives, says the gallery.

Perhaps the most high-profile display is a 9-channel, 3×3 videowall comprised of 42-inch Panasonic 1080 plasmas sourced with 1080p video and featuring a custom sound design. Titled “The Chapel of Frustrated Actions and Futile Gestures,” the video depicts figures perpetually repeating various activities in real time and calling into question the significance of our daily accomplishments. Its video and audio is sourced from a single A/V Binloop HD player plus a stand-alone DVM8500 for the ninth channel.

The A/V Binloop HD provides up to 8 channels of HD video in a compact, economical and highly-reliable package designed for continuous daily use with no maintenance. Video clips are stored on Compact Flash media so there are no moving parts to wear out; each card can hold hours of media.

Alcorn McBride’s DVM8500 is a studio quality MPEG-2 player with all the interfaces AV contractors need for professional installations. The DVM8500 stores video on Compact Flash cards, so playback is virtually instantaneous. Clips may be triggered via external contacts or pushbuttons, serial RS-232 messages, Ethernet, playlists or the built-in realtime scheduler. The unit can also simply loop continuously when powered.

“The Dreamers” is presented on seven 65-inch plasmas in a gallery on the lower ground floor. This video shows underwater portraits of people who appear to be sleeping; in its spiritual, immersive subterranean environment, ultimate interpretation is left for viewers to define through their own experiences, notes the gallery. “The Dreamers” has seven channels sourced from a A/V Binloop HD player.

Additionally, several more single-channel videos are sourced from stand-alone DVM-8500s.

“Bill’s videos had to loop seamlessly for both picture and sound. Alcorn McBride is pretty much the only manufacturer of an MPEG-based solution that can actually achieve this. And believe me, we know them all,” says Lein. “We had confidence that Alcorn McBride’s products would be able to achieve the artist’s vision – and the show was no easy task for MPEG.”

He explains that Viola’s work “uses a ‘grainfield’ effect, which makes is difficult to compress – and it has to match seamlessly from last frame to first frame- thaty point where you would really see the hit.”

Lein notes that AME “maintains a 25-year working relationship with Alcorn McBride. We like working with them!” All of the systems for the gallery show were built and tested in the AME facility.

About Alcorn McBride:
Founded in 1986, Alcorn McBride is the leading manufacturer of show control, audio and video equipment for the themed entertainment industry, and a rapidly growing provider of audio and video systems for retail environments and transportation applications. Staffed by some of the industry’s best engineers and backed by outstanding customer support, the company has demonstrated great agility in bringing new designs to market. Buffalo Wild Wings Enhances Game Day Atmosphere with Casio’s LampFree Projectors

Buffalo Wild Wings, a popular sports bar/restaurant franchise based in the United States, wanted to visually enhance and transform its customers’ overall casual dining experience. To do so, Buffalo Wild Wings Franchisee (AMPAL Restaurant Group) sought out DFX – a company specializing in audio, visual, lighting and automation solutions across a number of verticals – to help find high-quality, low maintenance projectors for daily sports viewing. With the help of DFX located in West Berlin, AMPAL  installed 15 of Casio’s projectors across three AMPAL Buffalo Wild Wing  locations in New Jersey.

DFX recommended Casio’s portfolio of projectors because they are LampFree and run on Casio’s state-of-the-art LASER & LED Hybrid Light Source. This means users do not have to replace lamps every 2-3 months, which typically cost almost as much as the original projector cost over one year. With the projectors having an estimated lifespan of 20,000 hours, Buffalo Wild Wings can now provide on-going sports coverage, since the projectors usually run more than 10 hours a day.

“Without the use of mercury lamps, Buffalo Wild Wings no longer has to worry about downtime from lamp failures  or the costly maintenance associated with bulbs,” said Gennaro Esposito, vice president of DFX. “As an industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience, I have found Casio’s projectors to be the ideal solution for establishments like Buffalo Wild Wings.”

By using Casio’s LampFree projection technology, Buffalo Wild Wings has eliminated thetime and cost associated with lamp replacement as well as dark screens during critical events.

“The total cost of ownership, ability to withstand extended daily use and retain brightness were the major components in choosing projection technology,” said Robert Corde, director of operations for AMPAL Restaurant Group, Buffalo Wild Wings. “Casio’s Dual Projection System and Pro Series XJ-H2600 go above and beyond our expectations and have made a significant technological difference in our restaurant locations by cutting down costs and maintenance, and ultimately brightening the atmosphere. Our customers now have the opportunity to watch crisp, vivid imagery unmatched by competitors.”

Three Buffalo Wild Wings locations in New Jersey are currently equipped with Casio’s Dual Projection Systems and Pro XJ H2600 projectors; four (4) in Monmouth Mall, five (5) in Rockaway and six (6) in Watchung, NJ.

The Dual Projection  System, designed with two Casio projectors stacked on top of one another, projects two sharp, high-quality images, which the Convex System control box then merges into one screen. It is available in two different models; the XJ-SK650 and the XJ-SK600. The XJ-SK650 features double stacked Pro Series XJ-H2600 projectors and provides users with up to 6,500 lumens, while the XJ-SK600 features double stacked Signature Series XJ-M250 projectors and provides up to 6,000 lumens. Both of these models provide roughly twice the lumen output provided by a single projector.

The Dual Projection System includes two (2) projectors, ceiling mount housing and the Convex System control box, which corrects and merges screen images. The system features high-precision correction and an interface that allows easy modifications using a remote control.

“Casio is proud to be Buffalo Wild Wing’s premier projector provider,” said Matt Mustachio, general manager of Casio’s Business Projector Division. “We know our Lamp Free projectors will reduce operating costs over the life of the installation and create a space that is both inviting and dynamic. We look forward to our continued relationship with Buffalo Wild Wings.”

Stampede Challenges Integrators To Be Creative When Establishing Payment Terms for Pubs & Clubs

The true secret to an integrator’s long-term success in the entertainment hospitality market lies in each integrator’s ability to extend their creativity beyond the systems they design and install to the ways they manage their customer business relationships, according to Stampede Presentation Products, Inc. President & COO Kevin Kelly.

“For an integrator to grow their business in this challenging market segment, they need to fully evaluate each individual project and pursue only those that operate on terms that keep their bottom line protected and ensure that money is coming in,” Kelly challenged today.

According to Kelly, it’s no secret that the entertainment and hospitality market thrives on ‘what’s hot,’ but it’s important to always remember that this idea is not solely limited to the drinks and food served or the live acts that are booked. Audio/video solutions greatly enhance the “night out experience” for guests, and because every establishment wants to stay fresh and attract guests night after night, the market reacts positively, often enthusiastically, to just about every creative and cutting-edge technology solution brought to market.

“Whether or not guests interact directly or indirectly with installed A/V solutions, their overall ‘atmospheric’ experience can be greatly influenced by the A/V system that surrounds them,” Kelly emphasized. “For example, a restaurant may elect to have audio/video control functionality at each booth, allowing each party to personalize it’s own unique atmosphere. For a large multi-level nightclub, cutting-edge CCTV surveillance systems allow the establishment to monitor and ensure guests’ safety throughout the venue. To keep business booming, entertainment hospitality providers need to integrate all traditional AV elements, such as flat panel displays, projectors and sound systems, plus take advantage of increasingly popular energy management solutions that protect their equipment and reduce their energy bills.

“When the opportunity is right,” Kelly continued, “and an integrator takes on a bar or club installation project, they may discover that the owners expect payment terms that allow them to slowly pay off their AV investment from the cash flow that comes in over the first few months of operation. But every integrator knows that the only way to guarantee you make money on a job is to be paid in full, before the new venture has time to fizzle out. Finding agreeable terms for both parties is where creativity is paramount. “

When a potential customer demands payment terms, an integrator’s suggested conditions could range from a simple solution of requiring the venue to pay a deposit, with the remaining balance to be paid in full on the first day of installation, or they could suggest a more creative payment structure, an idea that one integrator has done for projects in this unpredictable market.

“Instead of operating on a sales model, he converts the proposal to a lease with a specific payment schedule,” added Kelly. “This contract allows the integrator to remove the equipment on a Thursday or Friday afternoon unless the payments are made on schedule. Amazingly enough, this scenario can work out to the benefit of both parties. No pub or club owner wants to go into the weekend without their AV equipment, so the integrator found that venues with this term structure pay their bills promptly – and in full!”
