POWERSOFT K SERIES AMPS DRIVE SCREEN CHANNELS IN GRANADA THEATRE’S NEW 5.1 DIGITAL CINEMA SYSTEM

Santa Barbara, CA, July 2013 — The Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts recently completed the addition of a Digital Cinema rear-projection system and 30-ft. screen plus five loudspeakers at the historic 1,550-seat Granada Theatre, which anchors the city’s downtown cultural district. AV integrator AMT Systems supplied and installed the new cinema audio equipment, which includes seven Powersoft K Series amplifiers fitted with KDSP digital signal processing and KAESOP networking cards to drive the new 5.1 system’s LCR plus LFE channel loudspeakers.

“We added EAW QX596i three-way, bi-amped boxes for left, center and right, and two EAW SB2001 subwoofers,” says Mike Shelton, Senior Systems Engineer, AMT Systems, a full-service audio-video engineering and installation contractor based in Santa Clarita, CA. Because the new cinema system uses a Christie Digital Systems rear projector the left and right channel speakers were flown to either side of the Stewart screen while the center channel speaker and dual subwoofers were suspended immediately above the screen.

Two Powersoft K2 DSP+AESOP amplifiers power the passive coaxial high- and mid-frequency compression drivers in the three QX596i cabinets. Three K3 DSP+AESOP amps drive the four 12-inch low frequency speakers in each of the three boxes. Two K10 DSP+AESOP amps power the twin SB2001 dual-21-inch subwoofers, which carry the low frequency effects (LFE) channel.

Kyle Ridenour of acoustical and audio-visual/IT consultancy McKay Conant & Hoover in Scottsdale, AZ, was the consultant on the project. NEP’s American Hi Definition division, located in Van Nuys, CA, supplied the Digital Cinema projector and screen.

“A Dolby Labs CP750 digital cinema processor is taking all the audio from the Doremi Labs ShowVault video server and decoding it out to the 5.1 channels,” continues Shelton. The LCR and LFE channels are distributed to the Powersoft amplifiers, while the left and right surround channels are sent to the theatre’s previously installed Meyer Sound Constellation system. “The high slew rate and tremendous power capacity of the Powersoft amplifiers gave the speaker system remarkable impact and effortless dynamic range. What was also really nice about using the Powersoft amplifiers was that we used all of the DSP in the amplifiers to tune the speakers, set the crossovers and get the room flat. That made it really simple to do the X Curve processing in the Dolby processor.”

The X Curve, an ISO and SMPTE standard, was developed in order to normalize motion picture audio playback. “If you take the Dolby processor out of the signal chain the room is tuned to be flat through the amplifier processing,” says Shelton. “We do the cinema-specific tailoring in the cinema processor with two different presets. One is set up for the X Curve; that’s your typical cinema EQ. Then we have another preset that is for material that wasn’t mastered for cinema release; that’s a more natural EQ curve.”

“When we delivered the amps I built a preset group that included all the EAW Greybox setting for every possible combination of speaker loads and installed them into each of the amps,” says Paul Hugo of Marshank Sales Co., Powersoft’s regional representative, based in Tarzana, CA. “When Mike installed the amps he just went to the menu of presets and selected the appropriate one for each individual channel. And since every channel has every preset there is redundancy built in should there ever be a failure—which of course will never happen!”

This year marks the five-year anniversary of the Granada Theatre’s reopening in 2008 following a $50 million restoration and expansion, including technical enhancements and acoustical improvements. Originally built in the 1920s, the Moorish-style theatre is home to a variety of performing arts companies, including Opera Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Symphony, CAMA, State Street Ballet and Santa Barbara Choral Society.

Melkweg Extends Commitment to HARMAN’s Soundcraft Audio Consoles

Melkweg sound engineers, Ard Boot (left) and Richard Balk with their new Soundcraft Vi6

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – When in late 2009 leading Amsterdam music and arts centre, Melkweg (Milky Way), purchased a multipurpose Soundcraft Vi4™ from Dutch distributors Audio XL it was just the beginning of a relationship with the UK company’s digital platform.

They have now doubled inventory by adding a Vi6, using the same operating platform and Vistonics™ II interface, but packing a greater number of inputs and busses.

It has taken up the FOH position in the venue’s 700-capacity Oude Zaal (Old Room), while the Vi4 has been redeployed as a dedicated monitor desk, replacing the previous long-serving console which was becoming increasingly unreliable.

Needing a minimum of 72 channels, the decision was again taken by head of the technical department, Richard Balk (and his team), providing the Melkweg with an intuitive means of mixing the many disciplines it hosts — including music, theatre, dance and cinema.

“We wanted to keep continuity with Soundcraft,” he explained. “We were debating whether to take another Vi4 but we had a demo of the Vi6 — and the extra fader bay won!” Other compelling reasons for buying the desk, he said, included quality of the sound, the quality of the built-in Lexicon FX and the user-friendly set-up of the desk.

The sale was arranged by Audio XL, Soundcraft’s Benelux distributors, who were also responsible for the demo.

The desk is configured with 72 inputs, 16 outputs, and supplied with two DSP expansion cards. “If necessary we can upgrade the channel count by adding further cards to the Stage Rack,” said Balk.

Another of the venue’s freelance sound engineers, Ard Boot, added that the Melkweg’s pool of technicians had all backed the decision. “What we like is the flexibility of the desk and its size. The fact that we already owned the Vi4 made it a logical step to buy the Vi6.” The venue also has the facility to relocate the console between the Oude Zaal and the venue’s main ‘Max’ room.

Back in 2009 Richard Balk and his team had thoroughly researched the market before voting in favour of Soundcraft, noting that other desks they reviewed at the time had often been too complicated. He was already familiar with the Soundcraft digital topology and knew that the Vi platform would provide a fast-track learning curve for uninitiated engineers, boosted by the library of Lexicon FX and BSS EQ’s.

At the same time the FOH station was specially modified; since Dutch sound engineers tend to be tall a clever custom feature was to have special brackets made to elevate the mixing desk, which travelled up and down over a distance of 20cm. This ensured that their hands were always at the right angle to the desk for maximum comfort.

The senior technician confirms that the decision to standardise on Soundcraft has met with the full approval of his team. He also confirms that the Melkweg simultaneously changed the set-up in monitor world, adding a new 72-channel input box and 48-channel broadcast output, along with the rest of the infra-structure.

About The Melkweg

The Melkweg is operated as a multi-room, non-profit making venue by the Stichting Foundation and funded by the local government. Originally built as a sugar factory it later became a milk depot (hence the name). By the late 1960’s it had been abandoned until local hippies asked the council if they could stage a couple of “happenings” there — and this revived interest. The venue thrived during the punk era of the mid-to-late 80’s so that by 1995 they were able to take space from the adjoining City Theatre to develop “The MAX”. However, the original “Old Room” remains. Aside from its two band/dance rooms Melkweg also operates a 150-seat theatre and a cinema and is available for private hire. Recently a new 800-seat venue has been constructed on the roof in a joint venture with the City Theatre, and co-funded by the local government and sponsors.

NanoLumens’® First “Convertible” LED Display Goes Live For Brazil’s TV Globo Network

To captivate their viewers during coverage of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, leading Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo turned to NanoLumens® to design a one-of-a-kind LED display for their on-air set. The result was the world’s first “convertible” NanoLumens® NanoFlex™ DS (Design Specific) LED display, which converts from a closed 36” column to a vibrant 138” display at the push of a button! A video of the convertible display in action can be viewed here.

“With Brazil hosting the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, millions of viewers were expected to tune in to TV Globo’s live sports news programs, so the producers knew they needed to incorporate the highest possible level of technology and design into their sets,” said Almir DeCarvalho, NanoLumens Vice President of International Sales. “They wanted technologies that would ‘wow’ their live studio audience and viewers tuning in from around the country. We immediately knew we needed to create a display that had never before been seen in a broadcast setting, and that is exactly what we did with this convertible NanoFlex display.”

During the pre-game and half-time reports on the network’s two major sports shows dedicated to Confederations Cup coverage, the in-studio host pointed to the closed NanoLumens display and announced, “Let’s go live to the stadium!” At that cue, the column opened in less than ten seconds to reveal the bright, vivid 138” display to show live on-field commentator analysis and player interviews.

The 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup was the ninth FIFA Confederations Cup, held in Brazil from June 15–June 30, 2013 as a prelude to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The most recent winners of the six continental championships participated in this tournament, along with host country Brazil and UEFA Euro 2012 runner-up Italy. Host team Brazil defended their title for the fourth time in the Confederations Cup with a 3-0 victory over Spain in the final game.

NanoLumens displays are extremely slim, ultra-lightweight, energy efficient, and feature a bright, seamless, high resolution picture quality that can be viewed from any angle throughout the display horizon without color shift or image distortion. The company’s patented display technology, promises to transform the way marketers engage their customers in every type of trade show, retail, hospitality, stadium, arena, transportation and public event environment.

All NanoLumens displays accept input from nearly any device or content management system. There is no need for special software, hardware or special personnel to display content beautifully. With a profile of only a few inches, NanoSlim displays can be installed on virtually any surface without being obtrusive, adding the ‘WOW’ factor to any environment without taking up precious space. NanoLumens’ patented display technology is optimized for indoor use, operating with virtually zero heat or noise while producing bright, rich, consistent color as well as superior off-axis viewing with no color shift or image distortion throughout the display horizon.

NanoLumens’ technology has been named ‘Best Large-format LED Display’ of the year by Signage Solutions magazine in its 2012 Product of the Year awards program, as well as being recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as a 2011 future-proof tech trend and cited by The Wall Street Journal in its 2010 Technology Innovations Awards. NanoLumens’ technology also received the 2011 Breakthrough Technology of the Year Award at the American Technology Awards. Digital Signage Magazine awarded the NanoLumens NanoFlex a 2011 DIGI Award for “Best New Display Device – Non-LCD or Plasma.”

About NanoLumens:
Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, NanoLumens®, Inc. is a privately held corporation engaged in the research, product development, marketing and sales of unique flexible and fixed large-format LED display solutions in any size, shape, or curvature, that address a yawning technology gap in the $14 billion digital display industry. Since introducing its initial line of NanoFlex and NanoSlim displays in 2011, NanoLumens has built a portfolio of more than 20 international families of issued and filed patents on its flexible display technology that effectively address the commercial market void between relatively small flat-panel displays and huge, limited application LED boards. NanoLumens technology is not constrained by standard sizes and shapes, or by the weight, heat, noise and cost issues traditionally associated with commercial LED products.

Clay Paky Shines at Robin Hood Foundation Gala

The top names in finance and entertainment weren’t the only ones shining at the annual Robin Hood Foundation gala in New York City. Clay Paky Sharpy, Sharpy Washes and Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures were also out in force.

The Robin Hood Foundation has been targeting poverty in New York City since 1988. Known for applying sound investment principles to philanthropy, the organization partners with the best poverty-fighting nonprofits in the city and initiates and runs projects where community needs are unmet. The 2013 gala at the Jacob K. Javits Center attracted more than 4,200 guests for dinner and entertainment headlined by Mary J. Blige, Bono, Elton John and Sting.

The collaborative team at Performance Environment Design Group, LLC, was charged with the overall Production Design, managing the master drawing and lighting design for the event. Partnering with Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania PEDG specified Clay fixtures and grandMA2s.

“This was a 60,000-square foot dining room, so there was a lot of space to cover in a room with a very limited weight capacity,” says Spike Brant of PEDG llc, “It’s hard to imagine the scale until you do it – everything comes in quantities of hundreds and thousands.”

The event breaks down into 3 distinct area’s cocktail area, dining room and stage, each of which had its lighting controlled by a dedicated grandMA2 console operated by Richard Wold, Brian Jenkins and Matthew Piercy.

The gala marked PEDG’s first opportunity to use Sharpy Wash lights and Alpha Spot QWO 800s. “The Sharpy Washes comprised one-fifth of the wash lights in the huge dining room, we would have more if they had been available” Brant explains. We specified the QWO’s because they were small and lightweight and they fit nicely into the very tight space around the Auction Stage. We are going to use them again soon because of their size, weight, brightness and speed.”

A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “It’s great to have so many of our fixtures for this very important and high profile event. It’s always a pleasure to work with the great designers at PEDG.”
