EARS of Chicago Hosts Carl Tatz Event at Soundscape Studios

- Studio designer and PhantomFocus™ System creator Carl Tatz gives near-field monitoring tutorial at Chicago’s Soundscape Studios during Engineering And Recording Society of Chicago (EARS) event -

Nashville, TN: TEC Award-nominated studio designer and PhantomFocus™ System (PFS™) creator Carl Tatz, principal of Carl Tatz Design LLC (CTD), recently spoke to an audience of fifty-plus members of the Engineer And Recording Society of Chicago (EARS) at Chicago’s Soundscape Studios about the realities of near-field monitoring. Through graphs, illustrations and ultimately a PFS listening session, Tatz was able to open attendees’ eyes and ears to little-known frequency anomalies inherent in stand- and console-mounted near-field monitors and their solutions through the acclaimed PFS.

“People are still buzzing about the meeting, and lots of questions are flying around. Carl’s presentation was truly informative and eye-opening (or rather ‘ear-opening’). All around just great,” comments EARS co-president, engineer and JoyRide Recording Studio owner Blaise Barton.

Continues EARS co-president Reid Hyams, engineer and principal of X-Art Entertainment, “Carl’s presentation was brilliant – well received and most appreciated by everyone!”

Carl Tatz states, “It’s very gratifying to be able to share this heretofore unavailable knowledge to audio professionals who can take some advantage of it even without the PFS.”

Following the lecture, participants had the unique opportunity to audition the Carl Tatz Design PhantomFocus System in Soundscape’s Studio A control room and experience the information presented in the lecture. Veteran engineer and Urban Guerrilla Engineers principal Danny Leake (Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Sting) exclaimed, “The PhantomFocus System is extraordinary in its power, accuracy and detail. I had the advantage of hearing Mike’s room before Carl’s PFS….it was night and day. What sounded ‘soft focused’ before was brought into brilliant clarity. I cannot praise the PhantomFocus System enough.”

Engineer and Soundscape Studios owner Michael Kolar sums up his PFS experience: “When you can mix from instinct and taste as opposed to compensating for playback anomalies, the sky is the limit. When it’s right on the PhantomFocus System, it’s right everywhere.”

Bose® Introduces RoomMatch® Utility RMU208 Small-Format Loudspeaker

The RoomMatch® Utility RMU208 loudspeaker is designed for use in high-quality foreground music, under-balcony, zone fill, and vocal-range floor monitor applications

Framingham, Massachusetts, July 23, 2013 – Bose® Professional Systems Division has expanded its RoomMatch® range of array module loudspeakers with the RoomMatch Utility RMU208 small-format sound-reinforcement loudspeaker. The RMU208 is designed for use in high-quality foreground music, under-balcony, zone fill and vocal-range floor monitor applications in performing arts centers, civic auditoriums, houses of worship, secondary education and college auditoriums, dance clubs, hospitality and more.

The loudspeaker features a single Bose EMB2 compression driver (with 2.0-inch voice coil) to provide mid/high-frequency voicing similar to the RoomMatch full-range array modules. The EMB2 driver features a patented phase plug that lowers distortion and allows the use of a lower crossover frequency to improve vocal sound quality.

Dual Bose LF8 8-inch woofers (with 2.0-inch, extended-excursion voice coils) provide full-range output down to 80 Hz (+/-3 dB), and a 90° x 60° constant-directivity high-frequency horn provides wide, even coverage and may be rotated 90° in the enclosure.

The RMU208’s Quasi-3-way passive crossover with separate filters for each transducer provides uniform frequency and polar response; the 80-16,000 Hz frequency response and 125 dB maximum peak SPL allow for use in high-performance system designs. Long-term continuous power handling is 300W and peak power handling is 1200W.

The enclosure is constructed of baltic birch plywood with a 2-part polyurethane coating to resist scratches and scuffs. The multi-angle cabinet design allows for flexible use in varied applications, and the system includes a U-bracket and four additional M8 threaded inserts on the enclosure’s rear surface provide additional mounting flexibility.

The new RoomMatch Utility RMU208 small-format loudspeakers can be powered by Bose PowerMatch® amplifiers, or any professional amplifier with the appropriate power rating. The RMU208 loudspeaker will be available through authorized Bose dealers beginning in October 2013. For more information please visit http://pro.Bose.com.

Unreel Introduces UX VS Lite for Trackless Virtual Sets

Delivers a “No Ceiling” Approach

Unreel, an industry leader in Virtual-Set (VS) and Augmented-Reality (AR) solutions for broadcast television, announces the availability of UX VS Lite, a new member of its UX product line, designed to support trackless virtual sets. UX VS Lite is a full-featured, easy-to-use product for customers seeking a low-cost entry point into the world of virtual sets. UX VS Lite provides a “no ceiling” upgrade path, enabling its users to smoothly transition to fully tracked, multi-camera VS or AR solutions while preserving their software and training investments.

The objective of UX VS Lite is to deliver an affordable trackless virtual set control system that leverages all of the strengths of the flagship Unreel Xperience, notably its ease-of-use and richness of features, while leaving open the option to move into more sophisticated tracked solutions. UX VS Lite users can easily upgrade to the full UX VS product for both virtual sets and augmented reality – leveraging the range of camera tracking options it provides – should their requirements grow or change. This approach enables customers to get into the game without breaking the bank, while also eliminating the risk of being locked into an entry-level product with limited features.

“Our singular business focus is virtual sets and augmented reality, and we’re pleased to be able to now offer a complete range of UX products,” said Paul Lacombe, CEO of Unreel. “We’re looking forward to growing our product capabilities as this technology becomes mainstream over the next several years.”

UX VS Lite is designed to work with the Ross Video’s powerful XPression 3D graphics engine. Unreel’s UX VS Lite touchscreen user interface enables customers to easily setup and control a full 3D virtual set. Within this environment, UX VS Lite provides customers with the ability to: create animated camera moves; move, scale, and animate virtual objects; trigger complex multi-step animations; and place stills, movies, and/or live video into the scene.

“We’re excited that Unreel is launching UX VS Lite to complement their current UX AR and UX VS products,” said Brian Olson, Director of Graphics Marketing Product Management at Ross Video. “We believe in providing our customers with the products they want, with a growth path to the future, and Unreel’s UX product line now fulfills that need.”

UX VS Lite has proven the perfect fit for top systems integrator Integrated Media Technologies (IMT). IMT is leveraging Unreel’s UX VS Lite to develop broadcast training centers with multiple virtual set designs for a Fortune 15 client. Using Unreel’s UX VS Lite and Ross Video’s XPression graphics engine, the client is able to start with a single camera, non-tracking system with an easy growth path to a complete multi-camera tracked VS system in the future – all with minimal operator learning curve and simple system upgrades.

“We’re really pleased with being able to offer our Fortune 15 customer a virtual set system they can grow into,” said Chandos Mahon, VP of Sales, IMT. “Working with Unreel has been great. They assisted our design team in developing three virtual sets for our client, and have instructed our commissioning and training teams in operations. It’s been a great partnership.”

Jünger Audio Redefines Audio Processing at IBC 2013

Dynamics specialist Jünger Audio will use the IBC 2013 platform (Hall 10, Stand A49) to announce a new direction of creating solution based packages for its entire product range – one that is designed to make it much easier for customers to identify the exact processing solution they are looking for.

“As there is now a trend among some of our customers to use products like the T*AP (Television Audio Processor) for applications such as radio or PA, we decided to separate processing hardware from the feature set,” says Jünger Audio’s Managing Director Peter Pörs. “This change acknowledges the way in which many of our customers are working and allows Jünger Audio’s highly recognized functionality packages previously known as T*AP and M*AP to live on in common hardware.”

The new strategy will see Jünger Audio’s key hardware products marketed as universal processing platforms, with each one capable of handling transcoding and routing, as well as audio processing, and offering various ways of control including through automation or third party equipment. Instead of specific product names such as T*AP, M*AP and V*AP, Jünger Audio will now use these names to identify application packages. Once customers have chosen a processor with the right channel count and specified the application area they want to address (radio, TV, production, post production etc.), Jünger Audio will deliver the relevant software package with the audio processor box of choice to create a solution that exactly matches the customer’s needs.

“By using a universal processing platform, the new modularity of our product range will get as close as possible to each customer’s workflow,” Peter Pörs says. “Managing audio loudness with our renowned non-destructive Level Magic™ algorithm will be one of many features, along with 3G, HD and SD SDI embedded audio handling and high quality limiters, compressors, delays and equalisers. This modularity concept will also allow for specific coding hardware to decode, encode or transcode Dolby®-E, Dolby®-D (AC-3) and Dolby® Digital plus (E-AC-3), as well as HE-AAC formats.”

Pörs adds that the proliferation of distribution formats has made audio quality control during production more important than ever.

“In the past it might have been sufficient to monitor only the main mix, ignoring all transport coding and metadata implications,” he says. “But with all the simulcast formats in use today, the production team needs to simulate the home listening experience by real time metadata emulation. Adding this functionality to a hardware based monitoring controller, combined with loudness measurement and logging features, is the feature set of our QC and production monitoring solution M*AP.

“We are clearly refocusing on production and the fantastic first feedback we have received for our new voice processor V*AP evidently signals that we’re on the right track with our range of products. The V*AP offers all the processing arsenal you need for highest quality voice processing including mic preamps, compressors, expanders, limiters, and voice optimized equalizers. The V*AP also includes a voice optimized version of Spectral Signature, a process using individual spectral reference footprints as a real-time comparison reference for incoming audio, adding filtering only if it is necessary to generate spectral consistency.”

Pörs adds that the company’s extensive product range will now include a plug-in version of Level Magic™ in native plugin formats (VST, RTAS, AU, AAX, Audiosuite, etc.) for MAC and PC, 32- and 64-bit systems. This will be launched at IBC 2013.

“For the first time ever it will be possible for production staff using equipment such as Pro Tools to control audio loudness using our Level Magic™ algorithm,” he says. The addition of a plug-in to our range means that, from production right though to transmission, broadcasters can use Level Magic™ processing throughout their entire production and broadcasting chain.”

If you would like more information about Junger Audio’s universal processing platforms, please visit the company in Hall 10, Stand A49.

Stanco Productions Covers Fair St. Louis With Martin Audio

Fair St. Louis, “America’s Biggest Birthday Party,” was celebrated under the city’s iconic Arch for the last time before a two-year renovation, with Stanco Productions providing audio, video and lighting for the fourth year in a row.

To ensure superior audio coverage throughout the fairgrounds for this year’s featured acts Trace Adkins, Brett Michaels and Counting Crows, Stanco chose a Martin Audio rig consisting of 16 W8LC per side with 12 W8LM and 4 W8LMD downfill cabinets a side for outfill. Crown amplification and AVID Venue Profile consoles were also used for FOH and Monitors.

Stanco’s crew for this year’s festivities included Sam Wehrmeyer, Technical Director with FOH and Monitor engineers Justin Slazas and Brennan Houser.

Asked about challenges in providing audio for the Fair, Wehrmeyer responded, “The only real issue was getting enough PA hung from the roof and staying with weight limits. The W8LC is the perfect solution for this. Its light weight and high output allows us to hang more boxes for better coverage than other line array systems.

“Once again the client told us they continue to be impressed with the sound of the rig,” Sam concluded. “They told us Martin Audio is the best sound they’ve heard.”

WorldStage Projects the Plight of Refugees on Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine for World Refugee Day

Photo: Brad Penner

The plight of refugees may not be a high-profile topic on a given day, but WorldStage teamed with ART WORKS Projects to ensure that the problem had a larger-than-life platform during World Refugee Day, June 20. WorldStage was the media projection provider and sponsor for a public event at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City whose south bell tower façade served as the display surface for the projection portion of a multimedia installation addressing “Sanctuary & Sustenance: The Story of Many Journeys.”

“The cathedral is a huge, extremely ornate building so it was really important that we did something really spectacular,” says Tess Landon, director of education and outreach at ART WORKS Projects. “We had worked with Scharff Weisberg seven years ago and returned to them, now under their WorldStage branding, after we were invited to do this project at St. John the Divine. We made sure WorldStage was involved the whole time to make the most of a very minimal budget and help us deliver on our mission of using design and the arts to raise awareness.”

“It was gratifying to use the skills and tools we’ve honed over the past twenty years for a good and important cause. The Cathedral is a significant icon for the refugee support movement and was a fitting canvas for the poignant images we projected,” says WorldStage president Joshua Weisberg.

WorldStage provided Christie Digital HD18K projectors and a Dataton WATCHOUT system to display the custom-made video on the bell tower. In addition, the company furnished a façade lighting system and a sound system for the show’s musical accompaniment.

“WorldStage did a great job; we rely on companies like them for projects like this,” says Landon. “WorldStage has a combination of artistic vision and technical knowledge that make for the perfect collaborator.”

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.
