Chaminade Prep Graduates to Great Sound with Iconyx

Chatsworth, CA – March 2013When Chaminade High School for Boys opened its doors in 1952, it was housed in a converted military academy in Los Angeles that played host to 114 students. Since then, the school (now co-ed and known as Chaminade College Preparatory School) has expanded to include middle and high schools on two campuses in the Los Angeles suburbs of Chatsworth and West Hills. The school’s notable alumni include Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Longnecker, keyboardist David Paich, and comedian Gallagher.

The Chatsworth campus hosts the high school, which has recently added the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts, a high tech 600 seat auditorium and performance space equipped with distributed video in the lobby areas, and a full theatrical sound reinforcement system featuring Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steered loudspeaker arrays.

The system employs two Iconyx ICLive DUAL columns, utilizing triple HF coaxial transducers, one on each side of the stage. As Art Rautenberg of JK Design Group in nearby North Hills, California explains, the Iconyx columns were selected both for their control and their form factor.

“The side walls are all brick, and the room is pretty reflective, and we were concerned about the acoustics,” says Rautenberg. “The Iconyx enabled us to steer the sound and direct it away from the walls and reflective surfaces and into the seating area.”

The Iconyx columns’ slim profile was an ideal fit for the space as well, Rautenberg observes. “The architect had left us very little space to mount the loudspeakers,” he says. “We basically had a small alcove on either side of the stage that wasn’t very wide. So the Iconyx columns are set back a bit into the alcove areas.” The installation, performed by Audio Video Design Build Group (AVDB), also includes a Yamaha M7CL console installed at Front of House.

“The Iconyx really was the ideal solution for this particular challenge,” Rautenberg concludes. “They’ve got incredible frequency response and tight control over the sound beams. They sound great on the orchestral stuff and great for theater and spoken word programs. They really fit the application perfectly.

Location Sound Giveaway In Full Swing: First Winner Received A Lectrosonics UCR411A Digital Hybrid Wireless System

North Hollywood, CA (July 25, 2013) – Location Sound’s Most Awesome 50 Days of Audio Gear Giveaways Ever (at http://www.locationsound.com/most-awesome-audio-gear-giveaway) is now in full swing, and the first winner, Ramsey Mellette, a location audio mixer in Los Angeles, CA, walked away last July 15 with a Lectrosonics 411A Digital Hybrid Wireless System and a big grin on his face.

Mellette was ecstatic when he learned that his entry, one of over thousands of initial entries from film and sound professionals all over the nation, was selected for the first prize to be given away. He doesn’t normally enter contests, but the prospect of possibly winning a Lectrosonics UCR411A Receiver and UM400A Transmitter was so compelling that he decided to give it a try.

Mr. Mellette, who holds a Masters’ Degree from USC and studied sound under Emmy-award winner David Bondelevitch and legendary Production Mixer Jim Webb, has just finalized 6 months mixing on Spike TV’s “Auction Hunters,” Season 4. His next project is the show “Tabloid” for Discovery ID. Tabloid is a show based on tabloid stories and interviews of people who were part of crazy events. The stories are then re-enacted, and Mellette will be in charge of all the sound of the re-enactment portion. He says: “I will use the 411A every day. The 411A is the top of the line. Every mixer in LA would agree, it’s the industry standard. It’s just the best one out there.” He already owns three previous model Lectrosonics 201 Systems. “They are outstanding, but they don’t have the filtering and other capabilities that the 411A has. I’ll continue to use them, but the 411A is my Number 1,” he explains with a smile.

Location Sound is Mr. Mellette’s go-to store. “When I first started out in my career, I mostly rented gear or worked on shows that had their own gear, but in 2007, I decided to take the plunge and I bought my first Sound Devices 442 at Location Sound along with a couple of Sennheiser G2s and other things to get started.” That’s when he really started to get into the gear-game. Mellette has been building his equipment inventory as he went along, and Location Sound is where he shops. “Location Sound has a lot to offer. Most of all, the sales and rental staff are great, and everyone there is very cool. I feel a real camaraderie as soon as I walk in the door. As I need certain things for my job, I go to Location Sound often once or twice a week, and it feels as if I’m meeting a bunch of friends.” He also finds that the inventory depth at Location Sound surpasses that of other stores, “They have everything. I have never been in a situation where they couldn’t help me. They offer really good deals too, and they’ve always taken care of me. Their rental equipment is very reliable. I have never rented anything that had a problem. All their gear is really solid. I can’t say enough good things about them.”

Location Sound’s giveaway will continue at http://www.locationsound.com/most-awesome-audio-gear-giveaway until September 23, 2013, with new prizes and new winners every day. For the following weeks, the website visitors can enter to win many high-priced and high-quality items such as Sound Devices 664, PSC PowerStar Life, Shure VP 82, Sennheiser MKE600, Sanken CS-3E, Denecke TS-3EL, Ikan VX7i-s monitor and many others. A complete prize list is accessible at http://www.locationsound.com/most-awesome-audio-gear-giveaway-prize-list

Customers can enter up to three times a day. Bonus entries are made possible if a customer, AFTER completing the entry form, uses the Twitter “share” button to tweet the giveaway (must have Twitter account to do this). With this option, one person can potentially have up to 6 entries each day. Once a customer wins, however, they will no longer be eligible for the other prizes.

The giveaway is open to all legal residents of the United States, 18 years of age or older, excluding residents of Florida, New York, Puerto Rico and all other U.S. territories. For the complete Official Rules, go to http://www.locationsound.com/most-awesome-audio-gear-giveaway-official-rules.

Calrec Steps Up Training Program With U.S. Training Tour

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — July 23, 2013 — Following the recent success of a series of free training sessions held in London, Calrec Audio announced today that it will launch a similar training program in the United States.

The sessions, run by U.S. Regional Sales Manager Dave Lewty, will be free of charge, and space is limited. The program will consist of operational training on Calrec’s Bluefin2 range of consoles, including Apollo and Artemis. It is aimed at freelance audio engineers and employees at broadcast facilities who have had no formal training on the platform, as well as those who simply wish to refresh their knowledge.

“We are aware that many engineers don’t have the opportunity to attend training courses, so we are making a concerted effort to invite anyone who is interested to come and learn at no expense,” Lewty said. “This program is part of a larger educational drive we have been promoting over the past few years, which also prompted the creation of our popular Audio Primer and Network Primer.”

Calrec has previously hosted many successful one-off training sessions around the U.S. run by Calrec and Studio Consultants Inc., Calrec’s New York-based distributor, but this is Calrec’s first educational tour. The first sessions will be held Aug. 21-22 at the Glendale Media Center in Glendale, Ariz., where Calrec held a similar event in the past.

“We are delighted to welcome Calrec back to the Glendale Media Center,” said David Rainey, the center’s chief broadcast engineer. “The last session was a great success, and we’re sure the next one will be just as popular. We have a Calrec Zeta console installed currently, so this is a great opportunity to learn more about Calrec’s latest platform.”

Training is by appointment only on Aug. 21, with an open-house walk-in session on Aug. 22. To attend the session in Glendale, contact David Rainey at 623-930-4512 or email drainey@glendaleaz.com. NETIA Products at IBC2013

NEW RELEASE: Radio-Assist(TM) 8.2 Automation Solution
NETIA is unveiling version 8.2 of the company’s Radio-Assist(TM) digital audio software suite at IBC2013. This latest release of NETIA’s flagship software boasts three powerful enhancements, all of which will be showcased throughout the show.

Cloud Management
The introduction of cloud-based management for Radio-Assist(TM) gives users the ability to access the system database from any network-connected workstation. Particularly valuable for multisite radio broadcasters, this capability enables authorized users anywhere to access, retrieve, and work on the same content, without the need for time-consuming media transfers. In addition to enabling faster, more productive operations through shared media access, cloud-based management enables broadcasters to reduce reliance on server infrastructures and, in turn, lower the total cost of ownership.

By storing content in the cloud, Radio-Assist can serve as an online production database or as an online content archive. Radio-Assist archiving tools enable seamless management of the archive/restoration process in the cloud. Users can simply trigger the archiving process as a background task and subsequently use simple search requests to retrieve content. In disaster recovery situations, the content stored in the cloud by Radio-Assist can help to ensure continuity of service even when ground-based facilities are compromised.

iSnippet Audio Editing Tool for iPhone(R) and iPad(R)
The Snippet range of editing tools available within the Radio-Assist(TM) automation products is now available for iOS devices. Sharing the same look and ergonomic principles as the Snippet desktop interface, the new iPhone(R)- and iPad(R)-compatible iSnippet tool allows field reporters and other remote users to enjoy the Radio-Assist audio editing capabilities — familiar from the desktop — on their portable devices.

Teleprompter
The new teleprompter module for the Radio-Assist(TM) suite gives presenters and journalists convenient visual access to news scripts, which scroll continuously down the presenter’s screen and is linked to the playout system in the studio. Customizable features such as text size, color selection, automatic speed control that adapts to reading speed, and read length may be configured in user profiles that are tailored to presenter preferences.

NETIA Media Asset and Workflow Solutions
At IBC2013, NETIA will showcase the latest version of its media asset management (MAM) platform, which allows users to manage all processes within the global production environment — from editing through post and distribution — through simple, easy-to-manage workflows and task automation, and accessed through one unique and straightforward interface. This solution gives operators the ability to connect all of their partners and vendors within a single production ecosystem, simplifying the sharing and managing of media assets.

Metamodel Editor
The latest version includes new features within its metadata management module. Enriched with a new metamodel editor, this graphical tool enables the user to manage and customize the metadata model structure.

Monitoring
The new release of NETIA’s media asset and workflow solution includes a recording feature with which users can schedule specific recordings or continuous channel ingest. Video is stored in the MAM database along with corresponding transcript text files that are generated by a speech-to-text engine. A new monitoring feature facilitates the searching and browsing of these recorded channel feeds, either according to a timeline or through a full-text search. Upon locating the appropriate content, the user can extract, repurpose, and export the relevant video segment.

Martin Audio MLA Delivers Power And Control For 3G Productions At EDC Festivals

Las Vegas, NV––3G Productions, Inc. recently provided audio for the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) festivals in New York, Chicago and Las Vegas. Their PA systems included a Martin Audio Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) to provide the power and coverage they needed inside the venue while controlling noise spillage to surrounding residential areas.

In business for nine years, 3G has quickly become a leading force in the rapidly growing world of Electronic Dance Music events, providing audio for numerous large festivals every year. The three-day Electric Daisy Carnival 2013 was the culmination of Insomniac’s EDC festivals with eight of the world’s Top 10 DJs, and more than 200 acts performing on seven stages for over 350,000 attendees at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The combination of several stages producing hours of high SPL dance music in urban locales adds up to unique challenges for 3G. As Marketing Director Keith Conrad points out, “EDC events are really unique because they’re all in large open-air areas that aren’t necessarily traditional venues for concerts such as stadiums or amphitheatres. They’re in parking lots or racetracks, so the ability to control the sound is extremely important. A big reason why we looked at the Martin Audio MLA system was to control SPLs in areas surrounding the venue.

We also need a lot of bass, so the amount of subs we have on any one show is unheard of,” Keith continues. “Plus you’re doing multiple stages within one area at the same time, which is all about the configuration of the stage in terms of the coverage and direction of the loudspeakers.”

3G senior system engineer and designer Julio Valdez, a specialist in EDM events, provides more specifics: “I get site plans before the event for the areas that have to be covered so I can design systems suitable for what the client (Insomniac, who produces EDC and major dance events worldwide) needs, which is mostly to provide a whole lot of power and have the system sound good.

“Then we go to the location and make sure all of the techs have everything they need to complete the build and address the changing needs of DJs, artists and other performers. Sometimes we have to submit designs to DJ management for approval.

“Finally, I lay out the stages so they don’t have too much of an impact in terms of nearby homes. We have people walking around with dB meters before the show determining what’s acceptable at certain distances from the stage and referencing those SPLs at Front of House.”

The typical Martin Audio setup for EDC consists of a main hang of16 MLA and two MLD downfill cabinets per side with a massive complement of 32 MLX subs ground-stacked across the front of the stage. 12 MLA Compacts per side are used for outfill, and 8 MLA Compacts plus 4 ground-stacked MLX subs per side are used for delays. AVID Venue Profile mixing consoles and Lake loudspeaker processing are also part of the setup.

Given that the New York and Chicago EDCs are held at the Citi Field parking lot and the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, respectively, which are smaller and closer to residential areas, were there very different requirements for those two shows than Las Vegas?

“No,” counters Julio. “It really all comes down to getting as much power out to the audience as we can with as little sound out to the neighborhood as possible, which is a constant struggle. And, with that in mind, it’s definitely been helpful to have the kind of control that Martin Audio’s MLA is capable of giving us.

“Power is impressive coming out of the MLA, it’s definitely mind-boggling when you see the size of the rig that’s out there and the output you get from the system. In terms of sound quality, it’s very consistent and, as intended, one can really tailor the sound to what they want and MLA will do it.”

Considering that each stage at EDC features hour-long sets by up to eight DJs a night, do the artists have widely differing requirements in terms of the PA?

“Just like bands, the DJs carry engineers who are responsible for their sound,” says Julio. “And each one has different tastes and opinions about loudspeakers, but we’ve been able to satisfy them with MLA. It’s worked very well. A lot of guys who hadn’t heard MLA were definitely impressed.”

Fortunately for 3G, Las Vegas doesn’t present as many problems with noise complaints because the Speedway is quite a ways out of town, with only Nellis Air Force base nearby that makes its own kind of noise created by F16 jets flying in and out on a regular basis.

The Vegas site also has a large open area in the speedway oval and even though there are so many stages Keith tells us, ‘In terms of the DJs and what they’re playing, you can go from one stage to another in Vegas and you can lose the sound. All of the stages are facing in different directions with as much spread as possible between them, plus there’s a carnival in the middle of the festival with rides and attractions.

“Insomniac is committed to having a true carnival and festival experience and they want it to be the biggest, best and the loudest. They always push the envelope in terms of how much they can give their fans, but we are often walking a fine line with the surrounding communities. As such, we have to control sound to the best of our ability.

“The sound control was a big part of MLA’s initial appeal for us. And we really like where MLA is going in terms of control, ease of setup and quality of the boxes. We’ve had a great experience with MLA so far and there’s a very real application in other areas we are growing as well, such as corporate and TV broadcasting.

Concluding, Keith explains: “The audio quality overall has been stellar and we have yet to even run the system full throttle. More importantly, our customers and the bands/DJs have been really happy with it.”

“IBC is, without a doubt, one of the most important broadcast exhibitions worldwide. This enables us to showcase our digital partyline and wireless intercom solutions at the heart of the industry,” said Wilbert Kooij, general manager Benelux at Riedel Communications.

The Acrobat digital wireless intercom solution leverages the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard’s base layer to provide a license-free cellular architecture with seamless hand-over between cells. Consequently, each Acrobat wireless beltpack can continuously monitor and automatically select the best connection to the Acrobat cell controller.

Riedel’s Performer Series, the world’s first digital partyline intercom system, provides two- and four-channel master stations, which the IBC will use in rackmount and desktop configurations. The addition of the C44 system interface makes the Performer series the first fully integrated digital solution for combined digital matrix and partyline intercom.
