Calibre UK celebrates 25 years milestone

Calibre UK announces their celebration of 25 years of success in the electronics design, creation, manufacture and delivery of innovative processing, image scaling, scan conversion and LCD electronics products to market.

In celebrating 25 years of success, Tim Brooksbank, Chairman at Calibre UK commented: “Achieving this milestone has been immense fun. We’ve sold a lot of great products and have built some valued relationships. Here’s to the next 25 years.”

Founded on 8 August 1988, Calibre UK established itself as a small business in the technology and software sector and quickly built a reputation for electronics excellence.

25 years of electronics excellence

Calibre UK originally designed and manufactured custom test equipment for CRT monitor and television factories, primarily for automated picture analysis and calibration on production lines. This spun out initial product lines such as I2C-Bus development and associated test tools. In the early 1990s Calibre UK progressed to making specialist CRT video displays for the oil and gas industries as well as for general industrial purposes – a key market being displays for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) as well as specialist security and surveillance projects such as the Dartford River Crossing.

In the mid 1990s, Calibre UK introduced its very first video processor to market. This was a deinterlacer and format converter for use on the then-common Gem80 industrial programmable logic controller, which had a unique video output format incompatible with most computer displays.

Around this time Calibre UK was also the first British company to market with a high-resolution LCD flat panel display capable of showing live video. This was Calibre UK’s second true video processing and scaling product, developed in-house and able to de-interlace and scale PAL or NTSC to the 640×480 progressive format that at that time considered high resolution for the newly emerging TFT-LCD technology. Additionally, a range of specialist LCD driver boards was developed for industrial, medical and military needs, a market Calibre UK is still active in.

Also in the mid 1990’s other manufacturers’ products were also sold on a distribution basis, particularly those from US scaler manufacturers Folsom Research and PC Video Conversion.

Calibre UK then progressed to designing and manufacturing its own scalers, initially for the emerging LED videowall market, then for specialist projection and medical as well as super-premium home theater.

“Calibre UK’s export success was officially recognised when the company received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2012. Our staff, peers and customers are justifiably proud of the achievement,” adds Brooksbank.

Calibre UK continues its innovation and market development

Today, Calibre UK is a successful, respected and growing UK manufacturer, offering the industry’s most comprehensive range of processors to broadcast and professional audiovisual companies alike throughout the world. Despite the current economic climate, Calibre UK’s continues to expand with further investments being made into R&D through 2013.

Calibre focuses on pro-av, broadcast, medical, military and specialist industrial markets, primarily with video scalers for use as stand-alone devices or inside projectors, specialist displays and endoscopy cameras. Calibre UK is perhaps best known as an OEM manufacturer providing products and technology to several industry leaders in its various markets.

Kramer USA Moves to New Headquarters Facility

Kramer Electronics is pleased to announce the opening of their new United States headquarters facility, the new home for the Kramer USA sales, marketing and product development/support teams. The new facility is located in the Township of Union, in Hunterdon County, NJ; about two miles from the company’s previous US headquarters facility.

Tremendous sales growth along with a strong desire and commitment to further promote the professional AV industry through education, were the key factors for the Kramer USA relocation to this 60,000sq ft building. The new headquarters facility boasts a state of the art training center fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, which will allow for an unparalleled training experience.

“Our sales, marketing, and product teams in the US have grown so much due to the continued success our products have in the market. We had to find a new facility, one that would have the capacity necessary to allow for our continued rapid growth,” stated Dave Bright, President of Kramer USA. “We found the perfect facility to move our headquarters operation to in the US. The new building has a state of the art classroom, which is exactly what we needed to continue our mission to educate people in the Pro AV industry about the key technologies and concepts that will allow them to excel at their jobs and increase their company’s bottom line,” added Bright.

The training center in Kramer’s new headquarters facility will allow a more hands-on and interactive learning environment for students. Amongst many things, Kramer will be using the new training facility to provide Kramer Digital Systems Training (KDST) which can lead to certification as a Kramer Certified Digitalist (KCD). This training is an in-depth examination of the technologies and key principles all Pro AV professionals should know in order to best design, sell, and install profitable digital AV systems. It will focus on real-world Best Practices with a concentration on diagnosing and correcting digital signal flow challenges in both the design and installation phases. Accreditation, which includes a certificate and permission to use and display the KCD logo, will be awarded upon passing an open-book examination on the material presented during the training. Attendance at this training also earns the student valuable InfoComm Renewal Units.

“Our expansion to this new facility validates Kramer’s commitment to the Pro AV market. We will continue to develop and sell reliable, high quality signal management and processing products for this market. We will also continue to provide and expand upon our valuable education programs which cover the important technologies and concepts that permeate the market in this new ‘Digital Pro AV age’ we live and work in,” concluded Bright.

Digital Rapids StreamZHD Encoding System Hits the Road on the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus

August 15, 2013 — Markham, Ontario: Digital Rapids –- the trusted provider of innovative media transformation and workflow solutions for bringing video to wider audiences — announced today that the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is using Digital Rapids’ StreamZHD encoding system to educate students and deliver online streams of their live productions from its state-of-the-art, mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility.

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit organization that has traveled across the US and Canada for the past 16 years serving as a living legacy to John Lennon by providing young people with free access to hands-on music and video creation. Students and emerging artists alike are afforded the opportunity to create original content alongside today’s most recognized musicians and the team of experienced engineers on board. Through studio tours and workshops — which include celebrity appearances, live performances and live multi-camera video productions streamed online in real time — young musicians can learn how to write, perform, record and produce original songs and music videos. The StreamZHD system encodes high definition source signals into multiple concurrent live output streams ranging from mobile to HD resolutions.

“We want our students to get hands-on experience with the same equipment they’ll encounter in professional studios should they enter the industry, and since we are often producing shows featuring A-list celebrities, quality and reliability are critically important,” said Jeff Sobel, Chief Engineer, The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. “We also needed to be able to stream multi-bitrate video with state-of-the-art codec implementations and have complete control over the streams’ specifications. StreamZHD was recommended to us by our streaming infrastructure partner TodoCast and was by far the best solution that fit our needs.”

“Preparing live and on-demand content for delivery to audiences across multiple platforms and viewing devices is now an intrinsic part of video production workflows, making it an important aspect of educating future video professionals,” said Brent Ross, Director of Sales, North America at Digital Rapids. “We’re thrilled that the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is using StreamZHD not only to bring their live productions to their online audience, but also to train their students on the same premium media transformation solution used by the world’s leading studios and media organizations.”

Digital Rapids’ StreamZHD ingest, encoding and archive systems deliver high-quality, multi-format video capture, encoding, transcoding and streaming in versatile configurations that integrate easily into any professional environment. Offering the industry’s deepest feature set, they provide superior quality, flexibility, format support and efficient automation for transforming media for applications from post production and archive to live and on-demand multi-screen distribution.
