StrandVision Debuts Smart Phone Digital Signage Status Monitoring

Stoplight icons give electronic signage administrators easy, instant updates at a glance…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Aug. 20, 2013 – StrandVision Digital Signage, today announced an innovative digital signage utility that enables electronic sign administrators to monitor the status of their StrandVision Digital Signage networks via a desktop PC or a smart phone from anywhere and at any time.

The new notification utility employs familiar and easily understood stoplight icons to indicate overall and individual digital media player status. Green obviously signals normal operations; Yellow indicates a potential problem that usually has not yet affected signage operation; Red indicates a communication or player issue that has put the digital media player in automatic recovery mode while it waits for updates.

“StrandVision Digital Signage’s patented delivery system is rock solid but occasionally there are Internet or in-building distribution, power or media player issues,” commented Mike Strand StrandVision founder and CEO. “This new dashboard provides an instant snapshot of any digital media player that may be powered down or has rebooted due to a Microsoft update. Our smart phone utility lets administrators keep an eye on things to immediately address the situation and confirm the recovery results.”

Remote Monitoring – Instant Response
Administrators can easily see the signage status at a glance and drill down as necessary. The free smart phone monitoring utility is especially helpful for administrators of multiple digital signage networks. In that case, the top level stoplight indicates if there is an issue with any player in the system. Administrators are then able to drill down through the individual networks to zero in on the specific digital signage player at issue. Specific details for any electronic sign player can be seen by clicking on the appropriate stoplight.
This new capability supplements StrandVision’s automatic email notification system that sends status notifications to administrators and/or designated technical staff.

“This is another example of a customer request being translated into a free digital signage feature,” said Strand. “In this case, the administrator of a major Midwest hospital network mentioned that he would like to be able to remotely check on the status of their digital signage network from his phone and we knew that others could benefit from such a smart phone notification utility.”

The free StrandVision Digital Signage smart phone utility is available immediately to registered subscribers. Subscribers simply log onto their online accounts at the StrandVision portal at www.StrandVision.com select “Your Account” and then the “Snapshot” option.

grandMA2 and Clay Paky Sharpys Work Packed Houses at the 2013 ESSENCE Festivalä in New Orleans

Crowds turned out in record numbers for the 19th annual ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans. A-list artists including Beyoncé, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Tamia, Janelle Monáe, and others packed venues throughout The Big Easy. The festival was staged by ESSENCE Communications and produced by Solomon Group, a New Orleans-based entertainment production company which supplied various equipment including grandMA2 consoles and Clay Paky Sharpy lighting fixtures to eight stages across town. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of MA Lighting and Clay Paky products in North America.

“With great some support from VER, Solomon Group supplied gear to several stages, including five in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, two in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and one in Woldenberg Park,” says Matt Foucheaux, Senior Production Manager at Solomon Group. “We used a total of four grandMA2s. The Main Stage at the Superdome had two grandMA2 full-size units accompanied with two fader wings. Both the Center Stage and the Empowerment Experience Stage in the Convention Center had grandMA2 Lights.”

Foucheaux, who also served as the lighting designer for the Main Stage, selected the grandMA2 for its popularity among designers and directors working the festival. “It’s the console of choice for most people in the industry,” he says. “We know it well, which meant we could help our guest designers program their show. We were also able to send plots and patches to the designers ahead of time so they could pre-program. That was very helpful since their time on-site was extremely limited. We hope to utilize an off-site grandMA2 3D suite in the future. Given the limited time designers have to program their show, I feel like adding this piece will enhance their shows, and take some stress away from the time crunch that these festivals bring”

Foucheaux and festival programmer, Ryan Stumpp, built many presets that would help the guest designers. Since there was such limited time to program, it helped for these designers to come in and have a good amount of presets in their back pocket” “All of our NPUs and networking for the main stage was behind the stage which was around 350′, so we utilized a fiber network to carry all 22 universes of data”

Foucheaux deployed 65 chrome Clay Paky Sharpys for the Main Stage at the Superdome, which he says looked striking against the black truss that Solomon Group utilized onstage. “We built vertical columns between the LED screens and hung Sharpys inside of them to create the ability to show some really powerful aerial beam looks,” he says. “We also hung some above the IMAG screens, which were programmed at times to rake would go out into the audience.”

Danish Rockers D-A-D Get Down and Dirty With DPA

Rune Slot, live sound engineer for Danish rock band D-A-D, has turned to DPA Microphones to deliver the loud, punchy sound for which the band is famous.

“I experimented with a number of different condenser microphones before settling for DPA,” Rune Slot says. “They are fantastic – awesome – and it’s really great to have high end microphones supplying the inputs to the desk.”

Slot has been on tour with D-A-D for most of this year, taking in countries such as China and the US as well as plenty of places in Europe.

He says: “D-A-D is incredibly loud so for this tour I wanted to use high end microphones that could really capture the band’s noise and energy. The DPA microphones we have chosen are great and do the job perfectly.”

Originally known as Disneyland After Dark, D-A-D formed in the early 1980s and, apart from one change when Laust Sonne replaced former drummer Peter Lundholm Jensen, it has retained its original line-up. Its international breakthrough came in 1989 when it signed to Warner Bros in the USA. At that point the band was forced to change its name to D-A-D to avoid an impending lawsuit from the Walt Disney Company.

To mic Laust Sonne’s snare drum, Slot is using a combination of a DPA d:dicate™ 2011C Twin Diaphragm Cardioid microphones and DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, with the former positioned above the snare and the latter below it. d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones are also used to mike the toms, high hat and cymbals, with reinforcement provided by a DPA d:dicate 4011 Compact Cardioid Microphone positioned underneath the cymbals.

“It’s not jazz – it’s very Rock and Roll,” Slot says. “I’ve also used DPA 2011C microphones to pick up Jacob Binzer’s lead guitar. He has two cabinets that give a great combination of clean and dirty sound so I’ve positioned 2011C mics about 12cm from each of the speakers where they work brilliantly.”

Vocals are another area where DPA has come up trumps. Lead singer Jesper Binzer is using a Wisycom wireless system and Slot has equipped this with a DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone capsule.

“The mic helps me to stay in control without having to go primal,” Jesper Binzer says, while Slot adds: “It is a really great sounding capsule that truly grasps all the spit and energy of Jesper’s performance. Even when he sings from the side, it grabs the sound and pulls it into the mix.”

Slot adds that with a loud band like D-A-D, lead vocals need to be clearly heard in the mix and initially he thought this might not be feasible with a condenser microphone capsule.

“I didn’t need to worry because the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone capsule is of such good quality that it is more than capable of giving me the sound I want,” he says. “I was really surprised when I tried it for the first time because, usually with condenser microphones, you get feedback issues, especially in the high frequency range. However with the d:facto this just wasn’t a problem. It does what it is supposed to do and there is very little of bleed from the rest of the band, even though the band plays insanely loud.”

Slot is also using d:facto Vocal Microphones for backing vocals, with Jacob Binzer, Stig Pedersen and Laust Sonne all singing into wired versions of the d:facto.

“These microphones are really good at isolating the vocals and they are also happy to take plenty of punishment,” he adds. “The guys do like to ‘eat’ their mics, but the d:facto Vocal Microphones cope with that brilliantly and still deliver a very punchy sound.”
