ABS Installs Touchscreen Video Wall Mural at Central Washington University

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced it recently completed work on a video wall mural on the campus of Central Washington University, a four-year public university in Ellensburg, Wash. Located in Barge Hall, the university’s first building, which opened in 1894, the interactive video wall will showcase CWU’s growing list of distinguished faculty through photos and video clips.

Originally, the wall outside the university president’s office was lined with framed images of some of the university’s 101 distinguished faculty members from past
and present. While certainly traditional, the display was not very dynamic. “We had this idea for a mural and we wanted to embed a video presentation in it,”
explained Olga Mayer, digital artist at CWU. “The history of any university is very rich. So many photographs get tossed in the archives and we forget about those people.”

A long panoramic image of the region was placed on the wall on both sides of the 2×2 video wall, and the screens display an outdoor image that blends into the painting when other material is not playing. The video wall was built using a 46-inch Planar Clarity Maxtrix LCD video wall system with six-point touch capabilities, with controls that emulate an iPad interface. “New touchscreen technology really doesn’t fit in an old building unless you present it well,” Mayer explained. “That was a challenge.”

In June, ABS was faced with a hard deadline of the end of CWU’s fiscal year. ABS, which has worked on several projects with various departments at CWU in the past, completed the project within two weeks. Completing the video presentation, however, will take much longer. Under the direction of Linda Schactler, executive director of CWU Office of Public Affairs, content for the presentation is currently being collected.

Part of the appeal of the interactive mural is that faculty lectures, projects, and even musical performances can be included in each faculty member’s profile template. “Everyone is excited,” said Mayer. “When new students tour our campus, they will be able to learn about the people who have contributed to the quality of education at CWU.”

While obtaining information, photos, and video clips from current faculty members is relatively easy, information from retired faculty must be retrieved from the archives and digitized. Some profiles will be posted in time for the new quarter that begins in late September, but creating the entire presentation will take several months.

“ABS was wonderful from beginning to end,” Mayer added. “It was so comfortable to work with a technology company that understood that we don’t necessarily know the technical language. They made the effort to answer our questions and help us understand the project.”

New PESA easyPORT Converter/Extenders Integrate Legacy Analog Equipment into Digital Distribution Systems

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based custom design and manufacturing company for professional audio and video signal distribution, today announced four new easyPORT analog/digital multi-point utility converter/switchers that support up to four inputs. The compact throw-down boxes are ideal for temporary or permanent solutions to integrate legacy analog equipment into a facility’s digital workflow.

The EASY-4ADX4B and EASY-4ADX4F deliver 10-bit conversion of composite analog video to SDI. Both accept NTSC/PAL composite inputs and feature 4x oversampling. The EASY-4BX4DA and EASY-4FX4DA allow SDI video to be converted to analog video in NTSC/PAL, with fiber or coax SDI inputs. A built-in utility switch allows full crosspoint switching for all inputs.

“There are an abundant number of analog video products still in use, and our new easyPORT modules offer a unique and cost effective way to integrate that analog gear into digital distribution systems,” said Dan Holland, PESA vice president of product marketing. “Whether you need coax or fiber connectivity, easyPORT makes it a simple operation to effectively provide analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog conversion or switching.”

Some of the most compact switching throw-down boxes available, easyPORT modules offer significant size and power advantages over standard single-port converters, with added port options and built-in switching capabilities. For back room installations where rack space is a premium, PESA offers a 1 RU power distribution tray that holds up to four easyPORT modules with a shared power source to reduce clutter. Setup is fast and easy because each easyPORT includes USB and Ethernet connections. Once PESA’s CATTRAX software is installed on a PC or laptop, the GUI can be used for setup, switching, or diagnostics.

Sennheiser Digital 9000 Wireless System Takes Center Court at Elite U.S. Tennis Tournament, Delivering Flawless Wireless Performance

New York, NY – August 28, 2013 – The U.S. Open is the final major Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2013, with a purse of $34 million and over 700,000 fans expected to attend between now and Monday, September 9th. In addition to drawing international tennis stars such as #5 ranked Roger Federer, #1 ranked Serena Williams and Grand Slam defending champion Andy Murray, this year’s tournament began with a special appearance by First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, who spoke during the 18th annual Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day.

Audio Inc., provided the audio infrastructure, which includes eight channels of Sennheiser Digital 9000 wireless, (12) channels of evolution 300 series wireless and six channels of evolution 300 series in-ear monitors (IEMs). “The Sennheiser Digital 9000 was selected for its robust construction, audio quality, and the ability to provide us with frequencies that are not available in the analog world,” commented Mike Sinclair, VP at Audio, Inc.

The new Sennheiser Digital 9000 system, which features uncompressed audio, artifact free wireless performance and superb dynamics in a package that is easy to set up and operate, was used during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, which occurred on Saturday afternoon and was broadcast to millions of Americans by CBS Sports.

Ms. Obama, who was introduced by tennis champion Serena Williams, spoke through a Sennheiser ME 34 and an ME 35 wired back-electret condenser microphones, situated on an MZH goosneck at the podium. Her message, which was delivered in crisp and detailed audio, helped mobilize her “Let’s Move” campaign directed at youths.

In addition to the First Lady, Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day also featured performances by The Wanted, and Coco Jones — who donned a Sennheiser HSP 4 headworn wireless microphone.

The Sennheiser Digital 9000 system was at the core of the audio infrastructure on Monday night’s opening ceremonies, supplying flawless wireless audio as dignitaries including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and 39-time Grand Slam winner Billie Jean King delivered opening remarks. The evening also featured a moving rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, as performed by 11-year old Frenie Acoba — star of Broadway’s hit musical Matilda.

“Considering the importance of this live broadcast event and the difficult RF conditions in New York City, the Sennheiser Digital 9000 series really shined and was the professional system that put everybody at ease,” Sinclair observed. “The quality and reliability of the wireless audio, as well as the overall flexibility of the system, was absolutely spectacular.”

“The built-in spectrum analyzer on the Digital 9000 helped our techs consistently monitor RF signals as they came on line, keeping the audio clean and interference free for the duration of the event,” he added.

“We are grateful to Audio, Inc. for selecting Sennheiser to be part of this extremely high profile sporting event, which is of international significance,” commented Brian Walker, market development, Sennheiser. “With over 700 microphone channels being used at the venue, Audio, Inc. needed a flexible and robust wireless microphone system that could meet not only the demands of the environment, but deliver flawless, unsurpassed audio quality.”

During soundchecks, which occurred throughout the day and evening on Friday, the Digital 9000 system proved to be extremely easy to manage sonically: “The EQ on the consoles were set absolutely flat, and the voices sounded perfect through the P.A. speakers,” he says. “With analog wireless, there is usually a fair amount of EQ adjusting required to get a good sound.”

In addition to the Opening Ceremonies, Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day and for general announcements, the Sennheiser Digital 9000 wireless system will also be used during the closing ceremonies of the U.S. Open, scheduled to occur in two weeks.
