Air Shield technology features a rigid, protective shell with shock-absorbing edges and corners to protect an iPad from accidental damage. The case has been independently tested to meet conditions for MIL STD 810G transit drops up to six feet specified by the U.S. Department of Defense.*

The case is compatible with iPad 2, 3, and 4 as well as with standard charging stations and carts, such as the Belkin Store and Charge or Bretford carts. It offers quick, hassle-free assembly, perfect for large iPad deployment. Other key features of the Belkin Air Shield Case include:

  • Durable, protective shell construction and shock-absorbing edges and corners
  • Full, open access to all ports and buttons for easy device management and usability
  • Full edge, bezel, and back coverage
  • Thin profile and ergonomic design to fit small hands and most charging carts

“Apple iPads are important, effective learning tools in many modern classrooms, and they can represent a significant investment of a school’s limited resources,” said Jon Roepke, senior product manager, Business Division, Belkin International. “Shielding that investment from the risks of bumps and falls when being transported by enthusiastic students is a genuine concern. Belkin’s Air Shield Case now offers a practical, affordable solution for extra durability and protection.”

Belkin Air Shield Case joins a product portfolio that includes the Belkin Air Protect Case, introduced in June, which was designed to provide reliable simplicity without unnecessary bulk or weight. The Air Protect Case uses the same lightweight, high-grade material that is found in shock-absorbing running shoe in-soles and protective athletic helmets.

Tom Kenny’s HARMAN Martin Lighting Rig Shines at Brooklyn’s 2013 MTV VMAs

BROOKLYN, New York — With widespread continued talk on the winners, exciting performances, band reunions and the outfits of those attending, the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was another spectacular event held at the year-old Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Looking to deliver world-class lighting in the state-of-the-art venue, Tom Kenny was contracted to design an equally impressive light show to entertain thousands in attendance and millions watching at home. HARMAN’s Martin lighting fixtures, supplied by VER, lined the stage and house, providing a multi-function professional lighting rig.

Kenny, whose illuminating résumé includes lighting design for David Bowie, Eric Clapton and The Who, among others, has been working in and around VMAs production for more than 20 years – designing the lighting for the main show for the better half of a decade. Working with the creative minds of the artists and their own creative production teams, including Brooklyn artist KAWS, who also designed the new MTV Moonman award, Kenny imagined a tremendous design for the arena and its two-stage setup.

More than 100 Martin MAC Auras shined on the diamond-base main stage for performances and presentations. Weight was a major issue with the rig, so the lightweight, functionality and quality of the Auras were a top aspect in Kenny’s design. “We had a lot of lighting throughout the entire show and it was important to keep the rig functional and safe. The Aura’s multi-function capabilities, processing and its beautiful colors were flawless, which was evident during the live show,” Kenny stated.

Another 100 Auras were used as house lights to help radiate the fashion and style of the celebrities in the audience, while numerous Atomic Strobes were used to provide more “flash” to the winners as they were announced and walked up to the stage from the audience.

“We wanted something 21st century, something turnkey that would work flawlessly,” Kenny continued. “With the Martin lights, we could have been producing in a Broadway theatrical sense or a rock show, both of which we intended to present with the lighting. From the first shot of the live show, everyone in the world was watching. It had to be, and it was perfect.”

Assisting Kenny throughout the design, deployment and live phases were Mike Appel and Mike Grimes.Florian Wieder designed the VMAs, the Art Director was Tamlyn Wright and Den of Thieves, Jessie Ignatovich, Jen Jones and MTV Productions produced the show.

Emerging Artist, Engineer and Producer ron [k] Chosen as Winner of HARMAN’s Lexicon Endorsee Quest 2013

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Recently crashing onto the music scene, emerging artist, engineer, and producer Ron Kelly, better known under his pseudonym ron [k], has finally garnered the exposure he’s needed to launch his career. Today, Kelly was recognized for his achievements as one of two winners of HARMAN’s Lexicon ‘Endorsee Quest 2013.’ The contest was designed to recognize individuals who have experienced success working with Lexicon. As a winner, Kelly will receive $1,000 in credit towards the purchase of additional Lexicon gear and will be featured on the Lexiconpro.com homepage.

Gravitating towards the world of engineering at an early age, in 2000 Kelly was first able to upgrade his home studio to the professional level with Lexicon’s Lexiverb reverb plug-in for ProTools and the PCM 81. Kelly proudly still loves and uses his PCM81 for intricate/otherworldly effects he crafts for his music. By 2005, his career had led him to enter the post-production world as a re-recording mixer and sound designer where he became well versed with the Lexicon 480L unit, using it on everything from film and television to theatrical trailers and video games. , Kelly’s recent single ‘Stripped’ will be featured in an upcoming film directed by Joel Soisson entitled ‘Cam2Cam.’

“I’ve done shoot outs with other similar high end pro audio reverb/multi-effects processors and not one of them touches the sonic quality that Lexicon produces or the unparalleled technology that is implemented in the design of all their products,” commented Kelly. “Lexicon pioneered digital reverb. They wrote the book on it, they know what they’re doing and they do it better than anyone else!”

“We wanted to show our support for artists like ron [k], so we decided to let our Facebook fans make their best pitch on why they should get an endorsement. We looked at a lot of fantastic submissions, but Ron’s passion really shined through. We are excited to give him a chance to show everyone what he can and does do!” stated Noel Larson Market Manager, Portable PA, Tour and Recording, HARMAN Signal Processing.

For his prize, Kelly has chosen the PCM Total Bundle reverb/effect plug-in. “Whether it’s the PCM Total Bundle of plug-ins or Hardware, it will be put to immediate and excellent use for both studio and live effects processing,” explained Kelly.

The quality and features are everything when it comes to the gear Kelly selects. For an up and coming artist like Kelly, price is also an important factor in every purchase. “This is another place Lexicon excels. In my opinion all of their products are well worth more than the price tag they sell for,” said Kelly “Whether you’re on a smaller budget or you’re at a level of blank check spending privileges, Lexicon’s product line is going to deliver the best bang for your buck, hands down.”

Home Awareness and Energy Management Company enerG Launches at 2013 CEDIA Expo

Easy-to-sell and install, Z-Wave-based home awareness and energy management system provides integrators with an excellent hardware margin and lucrative recurring monthly revenue

BURLINGTON, MA – August 30, 2013 – Home awareness and energy management brand enerG Corp. is tapping the 2013 CEDIA Expo to make its channel debut (Expo booth #428). The company’s Home Awareness System (utilizing the Z-Wave platform) allows homeowners to control, customize, and automate all connected devices in the home and receive important system notifications on their Android and iOS devices.

The enerG starter package consists of a gateway hub, a thermostat and two smart enerG switches at an MSRP of $429, with additional fees for integrators’ installation and enerG’s monthly service plan (starts at $29.99). The system can easily be expanded to include lighting control, garage door access, keyless entry and wireless HD viewing.

Homeowners manage the operation of their connected devices at the enerGhome.com portal. There they can monitor how much energy has been consumed by device and the whole house in both watts and dollars based on their specific utility provider. This allows them to set energy goals, and accordingly, make adjustments to improve consumption.

The company’s mobile app mirrors the portal, making the system readily available on the go. For example, the homeowner can monitor energy usage, adjust thermostats and view video from the app, even opting to select and view multiple locations.

For even greater home control, the system incorporates Geo-Fencing, a technology that makes it possible for the homeowner to define rules or to adjust settings when people leave or approach the home (for example automatically adjusting HD-viewing or temperature, etc.). The technology uses GPS in the homeowner’s smartphone to trigger the settings.

Hardware
The enerG system is scalable and affordable. The pre-packaged systems are as follows:
• $429 MSRP Starter Package (gateway hub, thermostat and 2 smart enerG switches)
• $599 MSRP Connected Home Package (adds lighting and whole house smart meter)
• $1,299 MSRP Home Awareness Package(adds HD Viewing & Cloud based services up to 4 terabytes of recording & viewing video)
• $1,499 Home Awareness Plus Package (adds keyless entry)

Additionally, as many like products as desired can be added to the corresponding enerG package for no additional service fee.

Software
In addition to the hardware and installation costs paid to the integrator, the homeowner remits a service fee to enerG each month to access the system. The fees start at:
• $29.99 per month (Starter and Connected Home Packages)
• $39.99 per month (Home Awareness, and Home Awareness Package Plus)

The integrator receives a commission from enerG each month the system is active.

“We are trying to change the way integrators bring products to the end-user,” says enerG President Greg Brett. “Until now, recurring revenue service (RMR) offerings were only available through security-based systems and maintenance contracts. We found a way to bring to market a range of offerings that customers want and create a RMR stream for the integrator in doing so. This is a complete solution where the integrator makes profit on the product, the installation and the services. enerG provides the software platform, takes care of the monthly billing and markets back to the end-user to help the integrator get back into the home for new opportunities.”

“This type of product line is what our dealers need to expand their base of business,” says Steve Presti of Easy Access Distribution, a New England enerG distributor. “We have done a soft launch of the product in July and dealers have really embraced it. The packages offered are easily sold and have multiple add-on possibilities when specifying a system for a home or small business.”

Elizabethtown College Packs a Punch with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 Audio Console

Ginette Slaughter and Ryan Carson, student event technicians at Elizabethtown College.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pennsylvania – A small liberal arts college looking to upgrade the audio system for its 844-seat performance space recently took a huge leap forward with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 mixing console. Having established the Vi series as a favorite digital desk for touring and installed sound applications, Soundcraft developed the Vi1 for small to mid-size venues like the one at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania.

Barry Fritz, Technical Operations Director for the college, explained how the school uses the venues for a variety of events, including theatrical productions, musicals, college orchestra performances, worship, Christmas events, weddings and national chamber music acts. “Each year the number of events and their complexity keeps increasing, so purchasing the Vi1 has been on the long-term to-do list for a while,” Fritz said.

It is not surprising to see Fritz choosing the Vi1 as the college’s main mixing solution to alleviate the growing strain on the technical staff. While it retains a small form factor, it is packed with an impressive selection of features that one can also find in larger Soundcraft models such as the Vi4 and Vi6. For example, the Vistonics II™ interface is greatly appreciated among mixers in the professional audio industry and is an outstanding feature of the Vi1 console. Furthermore, it maintains a complete console package with 32 channels of analog input to 27 analog outputs.

“Having the analog inputs is a nice feature, plus the stagebox we purchased bridges the gap between digital snake and analog,” Fritz said. “I also love always having the channel displays there. With our old console, we never had enough outputs; now I have more than I know what to do with!”

Spanning only just over a meter wide, the Vi1 includes 16 motorized channel faders with fixed and user-definable layers, eight output/VCA faders and two master faders. More importantly, as a digital console, the Vi1 allows for both massive customization and recallable settings.

“We do have a lot of groups that repeat throughout the year, so it’s nice to be able to recall the cues from our previously saved projects; having that flexibility makes it a lot easier,” Fritz concluded.

DPA Ensures That ‘Sugar Man’ Is Heard Loud and Clear

US singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, the subject of the Oscar Award-winning documentary Searching For Sugar Man, has switched to a DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone to ensure that his audiences hear every nuance of his complex voice.

Producer and Front of House engineer Russ Miller, who has been working with Rodriguez since he started his current tour in November 2012, says the DPA d:facto vocal microphone has proved ‘absolutely invaluable’.

“It is an incredible microphone that is perfect for Rodriguez’ voice,” Miller says. “It has worked brilliantly at every venue we have visited, including Glastonbury, and frankly I couldn’t have got through this tour without it.”

Now 71 years old, Sixto Rodriguez has been called ‘the greatest 1970′s music icon that never was’. The Mexican-American folk singer was hailed as the new Bob Dylan when he was first discovered in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1960s. But after his first two albums, Cold Fact and Coming to Reality, were commercial flops he was dropped by his record label and disappeared. Although he was actually making a living as a manual labourer, there were rumours that Rodriguez had dramatically killed himself on stage. What he didn’t realise, however, was that a bootleg copy of Cold Fact had made its way to South Africa where it had become a huge success and had won him thousands of fans who saw his music as the unofficial soundtrack to youth protests against apartheid.

In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to track him down and this led to a revival of his musical career. Further recognition came with the release of the Searching for Sugar Man documentary, which won an Academy Award in 2012.

For Russ Miller, capturing Rodriguez’ voice is a challenge because he sings very quietly.

“As a singer-songwriter in the tradition of artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, it is really important that audiences can hear every word of every lyric Rodriguez sings,” Russ Miller explains. “However, when he’s accompanied by a powerful, up tempo band, it can be difficult to keep his vocal loud and clear. This isn’t a unique problem, but it was one I wanted to solve before we tackled some of the bigger venues on his tour, so I started casting around for a better microphone for him.”

After a conversation with live sound engineer Rik Dowding, who recently invested in DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones for The xx, Miller approached DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network, through Tour Supply Ltd, and asked if he could demo one.

“I’d also heard really great things about this microphone from Richard Nowell at RNSS who has been using them with various Jazz artists, so I thought it might work for Rodrigues,” Miller says. “The issue was actually demoing it because Rodrigues isn’t the sort of artist who will go into a studio and do an A/B comparison test. In fact, he doesn’t really do rehearsals – he just arrives at a gig and it’s ‘go’ time – there’s no real sound check or set list and he could start with any song. The first time we got to try out the d:facto was at La Zenith in Paris in front of a live audience of 7,500.”

Once Rodriguez began using the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone, Russ Miller certainly noticed a difference.

“It was amazing,” he says. “The microphone is incredibly detailed in the upper mids, and as a result I was able to attenuate cymbal spill with just a low pass filter because his voice cut through really well, without having to add any air. I was also impressed with how well the microphone took EQ-ing. It was obvious to me that this was the right mic for Rodriguez so we immediately specified it for the rest of his live shows.”

Since his appearance at Glastonbury, Rodriguez has performed in various European cities including Copenhagen and Stockholm, and at another festival in the UK.

“We’ve used the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone throughout and it hasn’t let us down,” Russ Miller adds. “I’m so relieved that we have finally found the right microphone for his voice as it has improved the sound of his concerts, as well as making my job as a live sound engineer much easier!”
