Community Provides the All-Weather Club Sound Solution for Mandala Beach Club

Ampere Manufacturas Electronicas S.A.De C.V. has supplied and installed a new outdoor sound system for The Mandala Beach Club in Cancún, Mexico, utilizing Community iBOX and WET loudspeakers.

The Mandala Beach Club is located on a narrow strip of land off the Cancún coast and is one of the region’s top clubs. It enjoys the idyllic setting of a soft sandy beach lapped by the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. The beautiful setting does, however, have a major drawback for sound equipment as the system is fully exposed to the elements. As a result the club has previously had numerous bad experiences, with well-known brands that could not survive the humidity, high temperatures and winds that carry sand and salt. Even with being covered at night, previous systems were unable to endure the conditions. What Mandala Beach Club needed was a system that could provide high quality club standard sound and withstand the weather 24/7, which naturally led to the choice of Community.

The new system was designed by Manuel Tapia from Ampere and comprises four three-way, large format 15-inch iBOX iHP-3564s, fourteen dual 15-inch iHP-215LVS subs, fourteen three-way, 8-inch WET W2-228s and twelve compact two-way W2-218s. The iHP systems are all-weather versions of Community’s powerful flagship iBOX range, featuring heavy duty fiberglass-coated Marine plywood and three-layer weather-resistant grilles.

The system also included Community Distributed Design DP6 pendant loudspeakers under the covered walkways. Processing for the system is handled by Community’s advanced dSPEC226AN network-enabled loudspeaker processor.

Manuel Tapia commented, “High end club sound and all-weather are two things not often specified together, but the Community system delivers on both counts and perfectly meets the clubs requirements. The club’s management is so pleased with the system they have just ordered a similar Community system for another of their venues”.

DPA Microphones At The Fortune Global Forum 2013

DPA Microphones played a significant part in the success of this year’s Fortune Global Forum, which was held in June in Chengdu, China.

CEOs from some of the world’s largest multinational companies gathered in Chengdu for the three day event, which was also attended by China’s Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli and other Chinese dignitaries. The Forum culminated in a Gala Dinner during which guests were entertained by musical performances by 30 guzheng players, opera singers, choral and pop singers, and a piano performance by Lang Lang, China’s premier classical pianist.

Prior to the event, Fortune’s Audio Designer Ron Lorman contacted Ken Kimura at DPA’s APAC office in Hong Kong and requested his help in sourcing microphones for the Gala Dinner.

“I have been using DPA d:fine™ Headset Microphones for some time and was aware of the quality of DPA’s product range,” Lorman says. “This event was of huge importance and it was vital that I delivered exceptional audio quality, therefore DPA was the obvious first port of call when it came to sourcing the right microphones.”

With help from Ken Kimura and Pike Xin, Product Manager at DPA’s Chinese distributor Digital Media Technology, Lorman was able to access exactly what he needed. At the Gala Dinner he had 100 inputs to deal with and all of the primary inputs were miked with DPA.

“During the conference sessions, I used assorted mics including my own stock of DPA d:fine Headset Microphones for the various presenters. The d:fines work exceptionally well because they deliver excellent intelligibility and are very comfortable for the presenters to wear,” Lorman says. “The Gala Dinner, however, presented a number of interesting microphone challenges, and this was where the advice and help I received from Ken and Pike was invaluable.”

Lorman’s main goals were miking multiple diverse artists, with rapid set changes, including guzheng players, percussion ensemble, lead vocals, choir, flutes, harps and a string quintet. He also had to ensure an elegant sound from Lang Lang’s Steinway piano.

“I had very little prior information about the guzheng players, so I wasn’t sure if I needed to mic every instrument – or indeed where it would be best to mount the microphones,” he says. “In the end we used DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones that we placed underneath the instruments, mounted to the stands with universal clips. They were able to capture the sound without getting in the way of the performance. The various d:vote 4099 mounting systems proved to be extremely flexible and well thought out.”

For Lang Lang’s piano, Lorman used DPA’s d:vote 4099P Stereo Microphone System. This dedicated system includes a pair of sensitivity selected d:vote 4099 supercardioid mics on goosenecks with magnetic mounts, which is designed to capture true acoustic piano sound in a live setting. With this system, Lorman was able to easily achieve a clean and transparent stereo sound.

DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones and d:facto Vocal Microphones were also used to mic a traditional Chinese ensemble with flute, harps, ziao and zhnogruan as well as orchestral musicians playing violins, violas, cello and bass, that played to guests during dinner. d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones were also used on the extensive percussion ensemble.

“The drums were very dynamic and the d:vote 4099s captured every nuance,” Lorman says. “Among the many highlights of the Gala Dinner were vocal performances by the opera singers, Liao Changyong, Laura Wright and You Hongfei, and by Tan Weiwei, China’s premier pop artist. For these artists I used DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphones and I must say, I was incredibly impressed by the results these mics delivered.”

The vocalists all used wireless versions of the d:facto Vocal Microphone, in conjunction with a Shure R wireless system. UK opera singer, Laura Wright, was an inspiration for this choice as she preferred to work with a handheld microphone rather than use a headset mic. According to Lorman, the two Chinese opera singers were comfortable to use d:facto Vocal Microphones, and these were provided for all three performers.

“I haven’t experienced the d:facto Vocal Microphone before and I was very impressed by it,” Lorman adds. “The sound it delivered was very smooth and clean, and perfect at the top end. The off axis response was very tight, with excellent plosives rejection and subtle proximity effect, all excellent characteristics. Singers all love the way it feels in their hands and are very comfortable with it. d:facto really is a very formidable and unique microphone, and I can see why artists like Sting are using it.”

Ron Lorman has successfully used DPA d:fine Headset Microphones for other critical productions. Recently at a London Fortune event, d:fine Headset Microphones were again in his arsenal, along with a d:facto Vocal Microphone for the singer who provided the entertainment.

“I’m so impressed with the d:facto Vocal Microphone and the d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones with the multiple mounts that I have now purchased them for my own stock,” Lorman adds, “and I can predict that they will be getting plenty of use.”

VARIA Packs a Punch at De Grote Post

Oostende, Belgium – August 2013… The Oostende Post Office, the only public building designed by famed Ghent architect Gaston Eysselinck, has been recognized as one of the finest architectural creations of Belgium’s postwar period. In 1981 the modernist style building was granted status as a protected monument. When the Post Office moved out in 1999, B-Architects, under the direction of Dirk Engelen, undertook the massive challenge of creating multiple modern theaters and performance spaces inside, while respecting the venue’s design ethos. The result is De Grote Post, a multi-purpose performing arts center unlike any other.

The main hall seats 431, and is designed for music, dance or traditional theatre performances. Acoustical designer Paul Mees of Daidalos Peutz worked with B-Architects to create the venue’s distinctive triangular acoustic panels, accented by neon tubes. The result is an eye-catching décor from any seat.

Designed by Marc Lambert of Gent-based theatre design group TTAS, the audio systems for De Grote Post boast the first European installation of the new VARIA modular point source line array from Renkus-Heinz. Four VARIA VA101 cabinets are hung per side, each array consisting of two VA101-7 7.5-degree cabinets, one VA101-15 15-degree box, and one VA101-22 22.5-degree box. A center cluster of two 22.5-degree cabinets augments coverage, along with a third cabinet ground stacked atop two VA15S subwoofers. Four TRX61 loudspeakers provide front fill for the first few rows.

As Steven Kemland, Sales and Project Manager of Foundation for Audiovisual Commerce and Engineering (FACE) explains, VARIA was ideal for the venue’s challenging spaces. “Most of the systems we looked into would have required many more cabinets to provide even coverage across the entire seating area,” he says. “The VARIA’s variable coverage patterns enabled us to configure a system with fewer boxes than a traditional line array. It’s very compact and yet it sounds like a much larger system.” Sam Serruys, technical director of De Grote Post adds, “The results we have achieved with a system using 10 inch drivers is truly remarkable.”

The smaller theatre is a more compact room, with the floor on hydraulic lifts, enabling it to be split into four separate areas, enabling artists to configure the venue to suit a wide range of performances and creations. The room is outfitted with a ground stacked system with left and right stacks of two VA15S subs, topped by 22.5 degree and 7 degree cabinets. In addition, TTAS also specified mobile setups that could be mixed and matched to meet a wide range of program needs, from the smaller impromptu performance spaces to the larger outdoor courtyard. Here, FACE’s recommendation of the Renkus-Heinz CF-101 point source line array system fit the bill perfectly. FACE also provided Avid SC48 digital consoles for the stages, as well as Behringer X32 mixers for the mobile setups. Microphones are a traditional mix of Shure, Audio Technica and Sennheiser, with additional system components by Radial, Omnicase, DPA, XTA, Powersoft, and ASL Intercom.

Kemland also gives the nod to FACE project engineers Stijn Vermeiren and Jeroen Willems, who completed the entire project from order to sound check, in less than four weeks’ time. De Grote Post director Stefan Tanghe says: “Oostende has long needed a performance space for smaller performances and exhibitions, as well as providing gallery space. Along with the large Het Kursaal theatre nearby, our city can now offer national and international artists the state of the art facilities they expect to find.”

HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers Star in 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival

LOS ANGELES, California —The epicenter of rock music on the west coast will find you on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California and at no time of year is the iconic street louder than the annual Sunset Strip Music Festival. Featuring artists such as Street Drum Corps, Finch, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Awolnation and headlined by Linkin Park. Escondido, California-based Sound Image supplied a HARMAN JBL VTX system powered by Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers for the festival which took place on August 3rd, 2013.

The system Sound Image deployed for the festival featured 24 JBL VTX V25 full-size line array elements (12 per side) along with four VERTEC® VT 4887A compact line array elements for front fill, 18 VTX S28 subwoofers (nine per side) and eight VTX G28 subwoofers in a single cardioid array. Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers powered the entire system.

“The VTX line arrays are a huge step forward sonically. It’s very smooth and the low-end is tighter and you have more headroom at the high-end as well. Plus using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ Software is extremely straight forward and intuitive,” explained Rich Davis, Audio Engineer for Sound Image.

Considering the time crunch, the combination of the Crown-powered VTX system used in conjunction with Performance Manager made the entire production far more efficient. “This was a one day festival and we didn’t have the ability to do load in the day before. We were onsite at 3:00am and once the stage was in place we had everything set-up quickly. Paul Bauman from JBL had visited the site and done some preliminary work and then it was just a matter of refining some of the angles and the distance we needed to throw. Being able to do everything from assigning the amplifiers to tuning the PA with delay times in the software is a major time saver,” added Davis.

For headliners Linkin Park, the difference in the VTX rig is unquestionable. “My favorite PA out there is the JBL VTX. At the high-end it really shines, there is no distortion and its capabilities are unlike anything else that is out there right now, when I’m out with Linkin Park it’s our first choice,” added Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, FOH Engineer for Linkin Park.

Sunset Music Festival’s Head of Production, Phil Jaurigui, explained how this was a unique year for the festival. “After years of using JBL systems for smaller staging applications, I was overjoyed by the sound and performance of the VTX system for the main stage at the Sunset Strip Music Festival,” he said. “It was not only twice as loud than the previous system we have used that fit into the same footprint, it also had a punch that was clear and noticeable even two blocks away. This performance has made me a firm believer in large-scale JBL touring rigs forever.”

“We are extremely pleased to be specified on Linkin Park’s technical rider and it was a pleasure to support them on this event. Ken Van Druten always does a fantastic job in making the VTX system sound great! Rich Davis and the Sound Image crew did a great job as always in ensuring that everything ran smoothly and the VTX system performed flawlessly. In particular, the EDS cardioid subwoofer array provided excellent onstage rejection – something that is important to the band members of Linkin Park – while providing high impact out front combined with very even horizontal coverage without any power alley issues whatsoever,” stated Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional.

“Swing House has produced the Sunset Strip Music Festival since its inception six years ago and building a large-scale street festival on Sunset Boulevard in just under 12 hours is an almost impossible task,” Jaurigui added. “However, with the great team of Sound Image, DPS and Bartles International Group all working jointly with us along with the addition of the JBL VTX system, it came off without a hitch and was the best-sounding and best-looking show we have ever presented.”

Gefen’s New HDFST Modular Matrix for HDMI Supports HDCP and Includes Built-in ELR Extenders for a Better Performance and Unique Customization Options

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced its newest modular matrix card frame with built-in signal extension: the 32×32 HDFST (High Definition Fast Switching Technology) Modular Matrix for HDMI w/HDCP. This new system supports up to 32 high definition sources and 32 displays using HDMI. Each source can be integrated and cross-point routed in any configuration. The modular approach offers HDMI extension over CAT-5 cable using Gefen ELR (Extra Long Range) technology based on HDBaseT for added flexibility.

The GefenPRO 32×32 HDFST Modular Matrix for HDMI w/HDCP routes any 32 sources to any 32 displays in an HDMI in/out configuration. A second configuration allows for HDMI in with HDBaseT out for displays located anywhere within a 330-foot (100m) distance of the matrix frame. Users can tailor their outputs to enable different configurations. The 8x HDMI output board connects to eight displays using standard HDMI cable. The 8x ELR (Extra Long Range) output board extends HDMI and bi-directional IR to a small receiver unit using one CAT-5 cable per display. This matrix can accommodate any combination of output boards to achieve the desired infrastructure for both local and/or extended outputs.

“The 32×32 HDFST Modular Matrix for HDMI w/HDCP can use two 8x ELR boards and two 8x HDMI outputs in the same frame,” explained Hagai Gefen, president, Gefen. “This provides an adaptable method of tailoring the matrix for each unique environment so you can save some money on cable costs if some of the displays can be placed near the source. It offers additional flexibility if some of the displays need to be placed far away.”

Gefen’s POL (Power Over Line) technology eliminates the need to power the receiver units, which obtain their power from the matrix. High definition resolutions up to 1080p are supported with full HDCP compliance.

Gefen FST is included, improving the HDCP authentication speed. The front panel LCD displays all routing information and menu options. HDMI features including 3DTV pass-through and multi-channel audio formats are all supported. EDID management settings are included to ensure a stable connection even when powering on/off individual displays. Users control this rack mountable matrix using front panel buttons, IR remote, the RS-232 interface or by IP using the web server, Telnet and UDP options. Dual, redundant power supplies offer added security for a reliable performance. As a GefenPRO product, this matrix comes with 24/7 support.

The SLIM projector’s 2X power zoom lens will project a large image from close range (60″ diagonal at 6 feet) without taking a lot of space and its multiple inputs can project content from a wide assortment of devices including a computer, DVD player or a video camera for live video.

“Today, many DJs are adding video elements into their performances and they need projectors that are portable but still deliver great quality and wide screen resolutions,” said Matt Mustachio, general manager of Casio’s Business Projector Division. “With their lightweight and slim design, Casio’s SLIM projectors are ideal for DJs who travel from gig to gig and need equipment to fit their needs. Our SLIM series is not only compact, but is rich in features ideal for the DJ space.”

Weighing in at only five pounds, Casio’s SLIM projectors are 1.7 inches wide, making them the thinnest high brightness projectors in the industry. The SLIM projectors are powered by Casio’s state-of-the-art LASER & LED HYBRID Light Source and DLP technology that provides LampFreeTM, eco-friendly data projection at a fraction of the cost of traditional projectors. Casio’s
LASER & LED HYBRID Light Source combines blue laser light and a fluorescent element to generate a high output of green light. The green light, blue laser light, and the light emitted by a red LED are projected through a DLP® chip which, in turn, is passed through the projection lens to form an image. This technology achieves an increase in color spectrum compared with a mercury lamp, while lowering a projector’s total cost of ownership and maximizing investment. Finally, all of Casio’s SLIM projectors are LampFreeTM, which delivers hours of reliable operation without concerns for a dark screen or high frequent costs of mercury lamp replacement.
