Classical Crossover Violinist David Garrett Tours with Meyer Sound LEO

Known for his boundary-crossing repertoire that includes classical arrangements of rock, pop, and punk music, violinist David Garrett recently performed a series of open-air shows across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German production service provider POOLgroup deployed a Meyer Sound LEO™ linear large-scale sound reinforcement system for the tour.

Kai Ulrich, FOH engineer for Garrett, was first attracted to LEO’s headroom, which would allow him to eliminate delay loudspeakers for many shows.

“Everything sounds so effortless with LEO,” says Ulrich. “You can really feel the headroom, even though the David Garrett show is not very loud. The first time I used the system I was actually completely overwhelmed by the sound, and I am not at all ‘brand religious.’”

David Garrett’s touring LEO system featured up to 12 LEO-M line array loudspeakers per side, along with 12 1100-LFC low-frequency control elements. The show also used six MICA® line array loudspeakers for downfill, four UPQ-1P loudspeakers for in fill and out fill, and six UPJ-1P VariO™ loudspeakers for near fill. A Galileo® Callisto™ loudspeaker management system featuring five Galileo Callisto 616 processors provided control and optimization.

DiGiCo SD7 mixing consoles were used at both FOH and monitors, while Garrett’s violin was run through a Lexicon PCM 90 reverberator and an SPL Frontliner valve preamp for extra warmth and texture. DPA microphones were used on all string instruments.

“The tour went extremely well, and the LEO system was a big part of that success,” says Ulrich. “It was absolutely the best choice for these shows.”

Meyer Sound UP-4XP Helps Educate Climate Change in Venice Biennale Interactive Exhibit

At the 55th Venice Biennale in Italy, an ambitious exhibit entitled Polartide invites participants to reflect on the relationship between oil prices and rising sea levels. The interactive installation is part of the Maldives Pavilion, and relies on a Meyer Sound UP-4XP 48V loudspeaker system for sound reproduction. The exhibit is open to visitors through November 24th, 2013.

Polartide was created by new media artist Greg Niemeyer to inspire awareness of the effects of climate change on one of the Kerguelen Islands, Gan Island in the Malvides, Venice, and Reykjavík, Iceland. Using a dedicated website [www.polartide.org], Niemeyer encourages visitors to click on an interactive graph that shows sea water levels and oil stock quotes. Each click triggers synthesized sea buoy bells, which generate elaborate, ever-changing musical textures that are reproduced for Biennale visitors.

These sounds are relayed outdoors through eight weather-protected UP-4XP loudspeakers that are connected to two MPS-488HP power supplies (48V DC). Signal processing is handled by a Galileo™ loudspeaker management system with two Galileo 408 processors. L’Aquila, Italy-based Fox Sound supplied the system, which was purchased through Meyer Sound’s Italian distributor Linear Sound S.r.l.

“We needed tools that reproduce sound precisely and work in the rain, and the UP-4XPs have achieved both brilliantly,” says Niemeyer.

Composer Chris Chafe adds, “The loudspeakers deliver the glorious sound of the bells successfully. They have proven to be very practical, both in terms of ease of installation and overall system efficiency.”

Polartide is co-sponsored by swissnex, Pro Helvetia, and CITRIS. Rama Gottfried served as sound artist, and sound designer was Perrin Meyer.

Polartide is not the only exhibit to benefit from Meyer Sound technology at the 2013 Venice Biennale. In the French Pavilion, Anri Sala’s symphonic film installation “Ravel Ravel Unravel” uses 25 Meyer Sound loudspeakers and a D-Mitri® digital audio platform, provided by Paris-based audio provider DUSHOW. The installation comprises multiple separate performances of composer Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto for the Left Hand,” and the use of an anechoic chamber. D-Mitri handles synchronous sound playback for three video projectors, mixing, routing, equalization, and delay.

Established in 1895, the Venice Biennale is a citywide exhibition of contemporary art from around the world, highly regarded for its encouragement of experimental artistic endeavors.

Denmark’s SOHO Lounge Installs Meyer Sound UP-4XP 48V Loudspeakers

The SOHO Lounge & Music Bar in Holbæk, Denmark has installed a versatile Meyer Sound system for musical reinforcement. Anchored by the self-powered UP-4XP 48V loudspeakers, the system was supplied and installed by Copenhagen-based PRIME A/S.

“People come to enjoy a beer or a glass of wine in the afternoon, meaning that the audio system only needs to provide low-key reinforcement during daytime hours,” says Lars Christensen, venue owner. “At at night, appearances by live bands and DJs call for something altogether more powerful. The system had to be truly multi-purpose, and I am delighted that the Meyer Sound equipment fits the bill perfectly.”

Peter Petersen, productions director for PRIME A/S, provided the venue’s main lounge space with 12 UP-4XP loudspeakers, four UPA-1P loudspeakers, two 600-HP subwoofers, and three MM-10XP 48V subwoofers. Powered by three external MPS-488HP power supplies (48V DC), the compact UP-4XP loudspeakers feature exceptional audio performance with the advantages of a self-powered system.

Elsewhere in the venue, five MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers are placed in the bathrooms and outdoor area, while one UPM-1P loudspeaker handles monitor duties in the DJ booth. A Galileo® loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor provides control and optimization for the entire loudspeaker system.

The lounge stage uses a Midas mixer and Shure microphones, while DJ equipment includes a Pioneer DJM-900nexus digital mixer and two Pioneer CDJ-2000 digital turntables.

“We get a lot of touring bands playing here,” says Christensen. “Several of them have already pointed out that our system is one of the best they have encountered in a venue of this kind in Denmark.”

Nexidia Announces Nexidia QC V2.0, First General Release of Its Caption and Language Verification Software

ATLANTA — Aug. 29, 2013 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced Nexidia QC(TM) V2.0, the first general release of the company’s software tool for automated closed caption, video description, and language verification for broadcast and IP workflows.

“With this release, we’re taking the earlier version of QC, which was built for and proven at Turner Broadcasting, and adapting it for use in any file-based media workflow,” said Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s Media and Entertainment division. “Now any organization that needs to verify their captions and caption alignment, video descriptions, or language can easily integrate Nexidia QC at any point in its workflow to ensure that content is being created, edited, and distributed, with the correct captions, in the right languages, and at the right times.

Nexidia QC has three main verification features. First, it verifies that closed caption words match the dialogue in the audio. It also verifies that a video description track is present and fits within the non-dialogue portion of the main audio. Lastly, it checks every audio track and verifies it has the expected language. These tests can be configured to launch together or individually at any point in the workflow, dependent upon the testing profile. Also, because it has a RESTful API, it can be initiated and controlled by any third-party application, including internally developed applications and in AmberFin iCR via the Nexidia QC plugin.

With Nexidia QC, quality control and compliance processes that are currently done manually become automatic, saving significant time and operating costs, and helping to avoid costly mistakes and potential fines. QC is scalable to support even the largest broadcast networks and all of their various outlets (TV, IP, mobile, etc.), which improves the customer experience for the large and growing audience segment that uses alternative viewing modes.

Nexidia QC V2.0 will be available in the third quarter and can be seen at IBC2013 on stand 3.A46.

More information about Nexidia QC and other Nexidia products is available at www.nexidia.tv.

IBC2013: Vizrt to display new graphics workflow, non-conform video workflow, live sports interactivity, social tv integration, 4k rendering and IP streaming

At the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), Vizrt will display tools to increase graphics and video productivity, dramatically enhance live sports broadcasts, and streamline production workflows in its booth (Hall 7, Stand A10). IBC2013 will be held from September 12-17 in the RAI convention center in Amsterdam.

Among the highlights will be new technology that allows designers to run Viz Artist with a remote connection to a powerful cloud computer. A press conference on September 13 at 8am in the RAI’s news conference room will present full details of this development and other top news from Vizrt.

Rendering power

Viz Engine, Vizrt’s real-time 3D compositing system, has increased its rendering capability beyond HD to 4k. Vizrt will display the breakthrough 4k rendering capability of the Viz Engine at the IBC show.

Viz Engine has been enhanced further with IP-streaming capability. This allows broadcasters to stream multiple formats and resolutions simultaneously, speeding the creation of online and mobile graphic and video content.

Non-conform video workflow

Merge graphics and video into a single workflow with Viz Engine and Viz Media Engine. Journalists search, edit and place graphics and video together in their native newsroom control system. Viz Engine then renders video and graphics together at the moment they are triggered to air. This non-conform workflow allows the journalist to change graphic content up until the moment the video and graphics are played on air. It also allows the graphic and video content to be played in a variety of formats in real-time from the Viz Engine for multiplatform distribution. Viewers on mobile devices, online, and on-air have the best possible viewing experience without the delay caused by transcoding.

Enhanced editing workflow

Viz Media Engine includes an extension panel to Adobe Premiere Pro CC that enables Premiere Pro users on both Mac and Windows to search and access media held within Viz Media Engine without leaving the Premiere Pro interface.

Control room automation

Vizrt will display the integration between Mosart automation and Viz Engine. When combined with the Vizrt end-to-end graphics and video workflow, the Mosart automation system provides a complete package for the entire newsroom workflow from the news editorial process to live on-air production. With the Viz Engine real-time compositing capabilities added to the Mosart automation system, an operator can drive complex transitions and studio effects from a single interface.

Redefining live sports graphics

With Viz Arena, broadcasters can superimpose animated 3D graphics, text, video, logos, images and animation over the live coverage of a sports event. The graphics remain in place, regardless of camera movement. The 3D graphics appear to be part of the live coverage.

Viz Libero, Vizrt’s 3D virtual sports enhancement and analysis system, will be presented at IBC. Version 5.5 offers Virtual SloMo, Virtual Presenter, and integration with the Grass Valley K2 Summit media server and K2 Dyno replay system. Viz Libero uses the existing camera feeds to create 3D flights and virtual perspectives. It features interactive telestration and annotation tools along with an intuitive user interface.

Social TV integration

Vizrt’s Social TV solution will be demoed at IBC with several new integrations and enhanced developments with some of the leading social media companies including partners never.no, MassRelevance, Applicaster and Promotheus. The Vizrt Social TV solution allows broadcasters to monitor, filter, approve, and harvest user generated content —such as tweets, Facebook posts, RSS, and Instagram photos. Build playlists or carousels of selected social content to display within live Vizrt graphics and send to air.

Complete online workflow

New at IBC Vizrt will display the Vizrt Online Suite integrated with Viz Media Engine. This integration gives journalists the ability to search all assets contained within Viz Media Engine from the Vizrt Online Suite CMS. MOS rundowns can also now be viewed within the Vizrt Online suite CMS.

A cross-platform implementation between the Viz Media Engine and Vimond’s over-the-top TV toolset will enable broadcasters to control their video content across multiple platforms and monetize their content online.

DPA Microphones Keeps Brothers Comatose’s Sound Thumping on Tour

Mandolin player for the bluegrass-inspired band calls on the DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphone for all performances

SAN FRANCISCO, AUGUST 29, 2013 ― Despite the group’s name, the bluegrass-influenced Brothers Comatose is far from a state of unconsciousness. Currently touring the nation at several summer music festivals, the band’s mandolin player, Ryan Avellone, relies on DPA Microphones’ d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphone to give his instrument a clear and natural sound.

Avellone discovered DPA Microphones during his search for an alternative amplification method to the traditional acoustic pickups. He wanted something that provided quality sound, was durable and still discreet enough not to interfere with the physical beauty of the instrument. The DPA d:vote fit that bill. Despite its small size, the d:vote amplifies the natural sound of an instrument, adhering to DPA’s strict reputation for high-quality audio.

“Most pickups produce a similar sound that doesn’t sound like the instruments, so I just don’t like them,” says Avellone. “I was searching for a while, and finally found the DPA d:vote. I decided to try it and I love it. It’s amazing for a live performance and is really good at recreating the sound of my mandolin for both myself and the audience. We play at venues and get loud, and I still have the microphone coming into the monitor. I pretty much never have feedback issues. The d:vote topped all of my expectations.”

A highly durable microphone that can be used across many musical applications, the d:vote is a unique, lightweight and versatile microphone that has mounting options for almost all instruments. It can easily be unclipped and repositioned without marring the finish of the instrument. Built with the touring musician in mind, the d:vote has a modular design that allows the user to swap out or upgrade individual pieces, such as the cable, which is also available as a heavy duty option.

“The microphone is great, it’s really durable,” says Avellone. “All of the cables and accessories are really well designed and can withstand anything. I’ve played probably over one hundred gigs with it all over the country and it has never let me down.”

Avellone wants to see more acoustic musicians using the d:vote to highlight the natural sound of their instruments, starting with his band mates. “I just know that once they try the d:vote it’s going to be their solution, too,” he adds. “I go to a lot of shows and have watched a lot of bands. They are good bands with good music, but their instruments just don’t sound ideal. They have nice instruments, like a $3,000 guitar, with cheap $50 pickups on them. That just doesn’t make sense to me. That’s what’s cool about the d:vote; when you put it on the instrument, it sounds like the instrument.”

Hailing from San Francisco, Brothers Comatose was formed by brothers Alex Morrison (banjo and vocals) and Ben Morrison (guitar and vocals). The duo got their start performing for friends and family at their home, alongside other local musicians. It was there that they met bassist Gio Benedetti. Avellone later joined the pair, along with fiddle player Philip Brezins. No matter where they are performing, an occasional fan on chopsticks can also be found on stage, as the band often invites audience members to participate. The band is currently on tour performing songs from their latest album Respect the Van (2012), a tribute to the Chevy G20 that takes them across the country to music festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Kate Wolf and SXSW.
