WorldStage Gets Creative at Adobe MAX 2013

Adobe MAX 2013 “The Creativity Conference”, took a very creative set design and projection mapping approach to deliver visuals to an audience of some 5,000 Adobe users and software developers – and over 100K more who watched the gathering’s livestream. WorldStage helped Adobe Systems, Inc. meet its ambitious creative goals providing AV support for the entire event, whose general sessions were held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

The annual conference is billed as a source of ideas and inspiration, a place where creative minds meet. While WorldStage handled projection mapping for a dazzling stage set during the 2012 conference, this year Adobe introduced a far more complex configuration, including two overhead canopy screens.

“It was a very organic design, a very natural feel for the space, with large compound curves,” says Richard Bevan, vice president of production services at WorldStage. “There was a lot to do in a short period of time, but we benefited from a collaborative design process with our client, Jeremy Nichols with PIX PRODUCTIONS. With the various scales and styles of display that this design required, it was an intensive process to arrive at the final design.”

The set design featured a huge center hero screen with two curved side returns flanked by a pair of IMAG screens. Two more screens formed an overhead canopy in a T shape.

“No one size projector fit all the displays, so we used 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 projectors with a combination of vertical and horizontal blends on the surfaces,” Bevan explains. Forty projectors were online in total. “We needed so many projectors because the square footage of the display surfaces was so large that it required a great deal of horsepower to achieve the desired brightness.”

Over all, the WorldStage projection system addressed a 38×120 foot hero screen at center stage, two curved 38×50′ screens to the left and right and at the extreme left and right were two arced 30×37′ screens. In addition, screens suspended above and over the stage measured 60×62 and 30×75′. The position and variety of screens required locating projectors in many unorthodox positions including at the lip of the stage itself.

WorldStage furnished Pandora media servers, a Vista Systems Spyder X20 image processor and a Ross 3.5 ME Vision HD switcher. Six Pandora servers were dedicated to the 12 live feeds, providing realtime masking and warping. Pandora Manager handled sequencing, queuing and content management and synchronized 4-channel audio playback to the video.

“Pandora did the opening segment on day one of the conference, then the Spyder took control of the hero and side IMAG screens while Pandora continued to feed the rest of the surfaces for the demos and presentations,” Bevan explains.

The opening segment on day one entranced the audience with immersive images of clouds, landscapes and warp-speed flocks of birds and colorful exploding geometrics. A similar segment kicked off day two followed by featured work by keynote artists attending the conference. Approximately 5TB of media were ingested and played for the conference by WorldStage; PIX PRODUCTIONS (www.pixproductuions.com) collaborated with Core Studios to create the media content and scenic for the screens. Mark Jepsen was the video director for the program record and web cast feed, that continues to gain viewers at Adobe TV.

WorldStage also provided eight HD cameras and three robocams. Robocams mounted on each side of the canopy zoomed in and captured overhead shots of the demo area on stage.

WorldStage augmented the theater’s JBL sound system with JBL Vertec speakers for video playback and presentations. A 64-channel Riedel digital intercom system facilitated point-to-point communications between 50 user stations.

In addition to projection mapping, WorldStage supported The Office of Tomorrow demo, which was presented as the futuristic workplace of a digital publisher. “We provided a pair of 80-inch LCD touchscreens and a 65-inch plasma, which acted as a table with a touchscreen overlay,” Bevan explains. “The publisher could move paper back and forth between the table and the LCDs with a multi-touch overlay by PQ Labs.” The third robocam was mounted above the 80-inch LCD’s delivered close up shots of the table surface in use.

Adobe MAX 2013 was “a flawless event,” says Bevan. “It was a challenging projection job for lead projectionist Terry Nakamura who had a lot of wire to run – 2.68 miles of cable for projection only. All the projectors were networked together for central control from a laptop.”

At WorldStage James Sarro was the project manager, Neal Gass the EIC, Jason Spencer the Spyder/screen switcher and Gabe Benso the A2. Freelancers Stan Dickerson and Florian Mosleh were the A1 and Pandora operator, respectively.

New Series Combines Broad I/O Support and Exceptional Up-, Down-, and Crossconversion to Meet Demands of Common Conversion Applications

READING, U.K. — Aug. 6, 2013 — Snell today announced the release of the 30 Series IQ range of format converter cards, which offer Snell’s renowned high-performance processing in a cost-effective design with the power and functionality required to address a wide range of applications. Based on a single IQ Modular Infrastructure module, single- and dual-channel cards in the series couple motion adaptive broadcast-quality conversion with support for a wealth of input and output types to enable flexible up-, down-, and crossconversion. In particular, the module allows output of an SD/HD simulcast in a single card while maintaining independent aspect ratios, metadata, and audio for each channel. Supporting up to 10 cards, the module allows 20 channels of conversion in a 3U rack space for remarkable space and power utilization. The 30 Series IQ range of format converter cards is available starting at $2,995 per channel.

“Cards in the new 30 Series IQ format converter range are ideal for handling a wide variety of common applications such as upconversion for re-purposing of SD content on HD channels, or down-conversion to maintain SD output feeds,” said Steve Cole, product manager at Snell. “With numerous processing options, a rich array of features, and multiple rear panel types, these versatile cards are suited to numerous applications and price points, and by condensing multiple functions into a single card they provide further cost savings to our customers.”

The 30 Series’ broad input/output support enables handling of SDI and AES digital video and audio, analog video and audio (including HDMI), fiber, and GPIs. All cards in the series include a frame synchronizer capable of referencing to a SD bi-level or HD tri-level reference and a variable aspect ratio converter with reading and writing of WSS, VI, and 2016 AFD signaling. Within the series, space-saving dual-channel cards give users the freedom to output two channels independently or to output an SD/HD simulcast while maintaining independent aspect ratios, metadata, and audio for each channel.

Standard audio handling capabilities include audio channel routing, delay adjustment, and level controls. Video metadata such as time code, closed captions, and teletext captions can be passed through the module or processed according to the required output standard. Further tailoring of 30 Series cards to system requirements is made easy by software options that provide noise reduction and side-bar keying. Versions are also available with SFP cages that enable fiber conversion or the use of HDMI and additional electrical outputs on HD-BNCs.

Comprehensive control and monitoring capabilities are inclusive to all Snell equipment; therefore, the new 30 Series range has full RollCall and SNMP compatibility at no extra cost, allowing easy integration with Snell or third-party network management systems.

Iconyx Welcomes You to Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV – August, 2013… Despite the recent real estate woes, Las Vegas remains one of the fastest growing cities in America. And as the city has grown, so has its airport. Along with the recent opening of its new 1.9 million square foot Terminal 3, McCarran International Airport has also revamped and renovated the original Terminal 1, including an updated sound system featuring dozens of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers.

“Terminal 1 was not designed with a dedicated paging system,” explains Edouard Charland, Vice President of Lenexa, KS-based Coffeen Fricke & Associates, Inc. (CFA). “The airport was using the fire alarm systems for paging, and most of the terminal-wide announcements were originating from a paging office that was using the telephone system to originate those announcements. This approach produced low levels of speech intelligibility and offered very little flexibility for zoning and directing announcements.”

Based on their involvement in the Terminal 3 project, CFA was called in to offer suggestions for the ailing audio issues at Terminal 1.. One of the most challenging areas was the expansive baggage claim area. As Charland explains, in addition to the typical acoustical issues inherent in large spaces, there was something uniquely Vegas.

“All around the carousel area there are numerous large screens playing video advertisements for local casinos and night clubs. The audio systems for those screens are fairly loud. They’re running pretty much non-stop 24/7, and they’re only overridden for emergency announcements.”

The baggage claim area is covered by 32 Iconyx IC16-R-II steered arrays, mounted on opposite sides of each carousel’s pillar to provide 360 degrees of coverage. As CFA’s Sr. Vice President Robert Ledo points out, the arrangement provided an unprecedented degree of control. “Typically, an airport will be zoned so that all of baggage claim is a single zone, or possibly a couple of zones. But this arrangement also enables them to address each individual carousel – this was an airport directive.”

“The Iconyx system actually enabled us to provide better intelligibility than something like an overhead distribution scheme,” Ledo adds. “It can concentrate the energy right at the people, and cut through the background noise.”

Another area where the Iconyx steered beam technology really shined was in the lengthy ticketing lobby, where the building’s unique architecture presented its own set of challenges. “The ticketing lobby’s design looks like an airplane wing,” says Charland. “So the horizontal coverage pattern varies as you go further down toward the narrower taper of the wing. Using the Iconyx provided us a way to cover the entire space not only horizontally but also to change the front and back coverage distance as the dimensions change.”

Twenty-two IC16-R-II columns are mounted about every 50 feet along the second floor walkway overlooking the main ticketing lobby. Custom brackets and fittings include metal wedges on the top of each cabinet to prevent their being mistaken for cup holders. “The beams are steered downward, each one a bit differently depending on the dimensions of the coverage area,” says Ledo. “It also provides a bit of a buffer zone right below the speakers in the ticketing counters themselves. You don’t want to bombard the ticketing counter itself with sound because agents are trying to talk to passengers. So being able to steer and direct the sound to where it needs to be helps provide that buffer.”

In both the ticketing lobby and baggage claim, the entire system is linked via RHAON networking, allowing for complex DSP programming to custom-steer each array independently using multiple beams. TheRHAON software and on-board contact closures are also used to monitor each array for proper operation.

Charland concludes, “the Iconyx systems enabled us to create customized coverage patterns to fit each space, and afforded us a degree of control and monitoring over the systems that a facility like McCarran International Airport demands.”

Testronic Opens a New Dedicated Games Facility in Poland
