UCLA’s Historic Pauley Pavilion Upgrades With HARMAN’s BSS Audio and JBL Loudspeakers

NORTHRIDGE, California – Building on the rich heritage of UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion and providing a new level of entertainment for students and fans, Los Angeles-based Pro Sound & Video recently upgraded the audio system, part of a $125 million renovation to the arena. Acoustic Dimensions served as acoustical consultant for the project, which includes HARMAN’s JBL Professional Precision Directivity™ (PD) series loudspeakers, BSS Audio Soundweb London signal processing and Crown CTs Series amplifiers.

Pauley Pavilion, which opened in 1965, is the on-campus home court to the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball, gymnastics and volleyball programs, as well as a campus landmark which played host to the 1984 Olympics, a 1988 presidential debate and renowned entertainers including Frank Sinatra. With 38 NCAA championship teams across the various programs, the venue’s history speaks for itself.

The design process was conducted over a 20-month period, while the renovation included the addition of modern amenities with a new center-hung video display and new speaker system for the arena seating, concourses and restrooms, with AV systems for the new team meeting room, player lounges and Stadium Club.

The total installation included eight JBL PD5212/64 loudspeakers for main long throw, eight PD5212/64 loudspeakers for main short throw arrayed above the four corners of the scoreboard and 32 AM7212/95 main delay loudspeakers installed in a delay ring around the arena seating, underneath the upper seating level. Additionally, two VP7212MDP floor monitor speakers were provided for courtside use, 29 Control 26CT ceiling loudspeakers installed in the arena’s premier seating Pavilion Club, and 30 Control 24CT MicroPlus compact in-ceiling speakers installed in the writing and press area of the arena.

“We have used the JBL PD5000 series boxes on previous projects and like the way it sounds. With its tonal quality and high output capability we determined it was a good design choice. Add to that fact that JBL’s headquarters are right down the street from the University, we knew that it was the right speaker for the arena” explained Brian Elwell, Senior Consultant and VP of Acoustic Dimensions.

A total of three Crown CTs600 amplifiers power the systems 70V speakers, with an array of BSS BLU-800, BLU-160, BLU-16 and BLU-32 being used for digital signal processing as well as a BLU-10 controller for level control and mutes of the various speaker systems.

“This was a fairly simple system to install, except for one main challenge,” explained Joe Byrne, Operations Manager, Pro Sound & Video. “With trapezoid cabinets such as the PD loudspeakers, it made it difficult to hang the boxes from the stadium roof. There is no easy way to have the speakers seismically arrested and would have required a huge amount of wired rope installed between the speakers and the ceiling. It looked chaotic on paper.”

“We needed a ridged frame system to cut back on the wire strung in the rafters so we developed a square structural steel frame in which the loudspeakers could hang inside and be seismically arrested to the frame itself,” Byrne said.

With the addition of a large new ribbon and LED scoreboard, the sonic quality of the JBL PD Series loudspeakers complemented the system quite well. “With a ring of delay speakers underneath the upper seating level, the coverage is great,” Byrne continued.

The great longstanding relationship between Pro Sound and HARMAN gave Byrne and his team the confidence in installing a full JBL, and BSS Audio system. “We’ve never had any issues with the audio system when we know we have HARMAN products deployed. With years of experience, we know that the system will be reliable and help reinforce the UCLA tradition within the arena.”

The Alliance has also seen advancement with two new adopter members, Luminex, a Belgium-based developer of lighting control, professional audio and video data distribution equipment for the entertainment industry and Renkus-Heinz, a designer and manufacturer of professional loudspeakers and audio electronics.

“We are enthusiastic to have these new members join the Alliance.  The variety of products and knowledge that comes with these new members is going to be instrumental in advancing a new ecosystem of interoperable AVB devices through certification in markets like automotive and consumer,” says Greg Schlechter, chair, AVnu Alliance board member, and initiative manager, Intel Corporation. “The addition of new members of this calibre proves the continued dedication and commitment that the AVnu Alliance has for Ethernet standards-based AV technology for our core markets of professional A/V, automotive, and consumer.”

The AVnu Alliance recently opened its certification testing for AVB-enabled networking bridges and professional audio endpoints, with products in bridge certification testing and endpoint products in the queue, now at its appointed testing house, the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) and has several products in certification process. Alcorn McBride’s A/V Binloop Delivers Multimedia Content for Kent State University’s New May 4 Visitors Center

Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, marked the 43rd commemoration of the tragic events of May 4, 1970, with the dedication of the May 4 Visitors Center. This center includes multimedia exhibits that inform guests about what led to the confrontation between students and the National Guard during the Vietnam War. This historical event left four students dead and nine wounded. The university selected Alcorn McBride’s A/V Binloop to playback the audio and video in the exhibit.

The dedication ceremony featured film director/producer Oliver Stone and PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill; Ifill moderated a panel discussion on the “Historical Significance of May 4 and the Visitors Center” and Stone shared his thoughts on “History and Memory in Film.”

Bryan Molnar, electronics technician supervisor with Kent State who oversaw the integration of the technology for the May 4 Visitors Center, chose the A/V Binloop for Gallery 1: The Context. This space delivers background information on the Vietnam War: A Nation Divided; the Generation Gap between students and their elders; and the Struggle for Social Justice.

“There are three CRT TVs,” Molnar explains, “each one playing a nine-minute video loop about the war, generation gap and social justice. Visitors can see all three TVs at once. But the audio changes to a different TV every three minutes, so the programs loop with two three-minute videos with audio and one three-minute video without audio.”

The A/V Binloop’s four video cards accommodate these requirements with the first three slots in the Binloop playing back the video feeds to the TVs and the fourth slot the audio. “Thinking about getting all that synched was crazy,” Molnar recalls. “That’s why the A/V Binloop was perfect – it’s designed to do exactly that. Most players don’t have this type of synchronization, but the Binloop could handle all the displays at once. And it can be adjusted any way I need.”

Alcorn McBride’s A/V Binloop is the ultimate frame-accurate synchronized audio and video player. With no moving parts, it provides up to 16 channels of ultra reliable playback that outlasts any other.

“Alcorn McBride was great working with us,” says Molnar, to ensure the equipment delivered the functionality that Gallery 1 demanded. “The system is working beautifully. The A/V Binloop comes on every morning and goes to sleep every night. I’ve never had a problem with it.”

The designers of the May 4 Visitors Center are Cybelle Jones and Carl Rhodes of Gallagher & Associates. For more information about Kent State’s May 4 Visitors Center, visit www.kent.edu/may4.

ABS Installs Touchscreen Video Wall Mural at Central Washington University

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced it recently completed work on a video wall mural on the campus of Central Washington University, a four-year public university in Ellensburg, Wash. Located in Barge Hall, the university’s first building, which opened in 1894, the interactive video wall will showcase CWU’s growing list of distinguished faculty through photos and video clips.

Originally, the wall outside the university president’s office was lined with framed images of some of the university’s 101 distinguished faculty members from past
and present. While certainly traditional, the display was not very dynamic. “We had this idea for a mural and we wanted to embed a video presentation in it,”
explained Olga Mayer, digital artist at CWU. “The history of any university is very rich. So many photographs get tossed in the archives and we forget about those people.”

A long panoramic image of the region was placed on the wall on both sides of the 2×2 video wall, and the screens display an outdoor image that blends into the painting when other material is not playing. The video wall was built using a 46-inch Planar Clarity Maxtrix LCD video wall system with six-point touch capabilities, with controls that emulate an iPad interface. “New touchscreen technology really doesn’t fit in an old building unless you present it well,” Mayer explained. “That was a challenge.”

In June, ABS was faced with a hard deadline of the end of CWU’s fiscal year. ABS, which has worked on several projects with various departments at CWU in the past, completed the project within two weeks. Completing the video presentation, however, will take much longer. Under the direction of Linda Schactler, executive director of CWU Office of Public Affairs, content for the presentation is currently being collected.

Part of the appeal of the interactive mural is that faculty lectures, projects, and even musical performances can be included in each faculty member’s profile template. “Everyone is excited,” said Mayer. “When new students tour our campus, they will be able to learn about the people who have contributed to the quality of education at CWU.”

While obtaining information, photos, and video clips from current faculty members is relatively easy, information from retired faculty must be retrieved from the archives and digitized. Some profiles will be posted in time for the new quarter that begins in late September, but creating the entire presentation will take several months.

“ABS was wonderful from beginning to end,” Mayer added. “It was so comfortable to work with a technology company that understood that we don’t necessarily know the technical language. They made the effort to answer our questions and help us understand the project.”

About ABS:

Based in SeaTac, WA, ABS (Advanced Broadcast Solutions) delivers customized, technologically superior solutions for broadcast, corporate, house of worship, entertainment, government, and educational facilities – from design and integration to installation and support services. Since 1982, its experienced technical staff has installed more than 700 systems for clients including Fisher Communications, Cowles California Media, Real Networks, Cisco Systems, and Microsoft Studios.
