Cobalt Digital To Release Major Enhancements To COMPASS and FUSION3G Lines at IBC 2013

IBC Stand 10.B44

Increased Functionality to Target Production and Post Production Community

Urbana, IL – Cobalt Digital (www.CobaltDigital.com), manufacturer of award-winning 3G/HD/SD-SDI conversion gear, will announce significant loudness metering enhancements to its COMPASS® and FUSION3G® lines (Fusion 99xx, COMPASS 9085 and 9301 for AES only applications cards) at this year’s IBC2013, at Stand 10.B44. The new features, which will include multi-session loudness metering and logging with timecode input, will specifically be optimized for the production and post-production community’s workflow.

“The implementation of ATSC A/85 and EBU R128 loudness measurements and compliance directives, along with their respective incorporation in both the U.S. and Europe, has yielded great improvements in TV loudness,” explains Chris Shaw, EVP Sales and Marketing, Cobalt Digital. “There is now a growing call from broadcasters for content creators to deliver compliant content – as this will greatly reduce the need for extreme corrections at the broadcast head-ends and aid in maintaining original audio production quality. That’s why Cobalt Digital is excited to be rolling out these important enhancements that will specifically address the needs of the production and post-production community. Cobalt’s extensive range of cards is continually growing, offering innovative solutions for the most demanding applications.”

Cobalt’s wide range of cards will be ATSC A/85 ITU BS.1770-3 and EBU R128 compliant. Other enhancements will include optional LTC input for accurate dubbing, post production and EDLs; full logging of all non-compliant issues; error warnings; and regional and standards variations configurable via Cobalt’s remote control WinOGCP application. Now, WinOGCP provides session store and resume functions (stop/start without loss of placement or data), with subsequent sessions appended to give total session LKFS/LU reading.

An easily obtainable upgrade path includes Dolby Decode/Encode, Linear Acoustic® upMAX™ Upmixing and Linear Acoustic® AEROMAX™ Loudness Processing – dependent on which base card is deployed.

The Cobalt team will be on-hand to offer visitors demonstrations of the new features, as well as other new products and enhancements, at the company’s stand during IBC2013.

Gefen Brings New Innovations in Connectivity to CEDIA

CEDIA 2013
Denver, Colorado
September 25 – 28, 2013

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen will bring its latest arsenal of hardware to this landmark event, highlighting the best solutions for audio/video integrators in the custom electronics marketplace.

GefenTV Wireless HD Extender 60Ghz

This next generation extender passes through uncompressed 3DTV 1080p HDMI video up to 33-feet (10m) in distance. Because it has MHL compatibility, it can support the connection of any mobile device that supports HDMI and will conveniently charge the device while it is connected. This new model is easy to install, providing a plug and play setup that anyone with even a little technology savvy should be able to handle.

GefenTV High Resolution USB to Audio Decoder

Output high fidelity audio from the USB port on any computer, tablet or laptop with the new USB to Audio Decoder. Audio is decoded and scaled at a 192k sampling rate, ideal for anyone who wants high quality sound without the static and noise that you typically hear when decoding different audio formats. The Decoder also includes a digital interpolation filter and digital to analog (DAC) converter to enhance its performance.

GefenPRO Matrix Switchers for HDMI w/HDCP

The GefenPRO 16×16 and the 32×32 Modular Matrixes for HDMI w/HDCP offer cross-point routing of one or more sources to one or all connected displays with HDCP compliance. Both include Gefen’s FST (Fast Switching Technology) to significantly improve the HDCP authentication process and minimize latency. The modular nature allows a customization of to include eight HDMI outputs or eight ELR (Extra Long Range) outputs that use HDBaseT to deliver HDMI with IR up to 330 feet (100m) using a single CAT-5 cable per display.

GAVA (Gefen A/V Automation) 3.0

Additional new features include Sonos integration, so integrators will be able to add audio zones by adding a wireless Sonos “Zone Player” wherever needed. New “Event Engine” and expanded Macro capability allows more customization and automation. Integrators can add an “event trigger” to use a Lutron keypad, switch or dimmer to run an A/V macro, and create two-way integration between lighting and A/V systems. IP camera and thermostat integration will also be shown for the first time. Integration with BlueBolt Power Management devices means GAVA can reduce idle system power consumption to only a few watts, rather than hundreds of watts consumed by traditional integrated systems in standby mode. GAVA now supports Lutron’s GRAFIK Eye QS with the QSE Interface, as well as HomeWorks QS and RadioRA2 systems. GAVA can also be used to bridge Lutron and KNX lighting systems, for greater flexibility in mixed environments.

Ultra HD 4k Systems

A selection of Ultra HD splitters, switchers and matrix switchers offer support for resolutions up to 4k and can be easily integrated into a system supporting both 1080p and 3840p resolutions. Gefen ToolBox Splitters are ideal for sending one 4k source to two, four or eight displays at the same time. HDCP compliance, 3DTV pass-through and Gefen Fast Switching Technology (FST) are included to stabilize the signal distribution. The 1:2, 1:4 and 1:8 Splitters for HDMI 4k/2k are all enclosed in a wall mountable frame that can be mounted near the source or behind the connected displays. The Gefen ToolBox 4×1 Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k allows four sources to be connected to the same 4k display with source selection controlled by IR remote, IP connectivity, RS-232 or front panel selection. The Gefen ToolBox 6×2 Matrix Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k connects up to six sources to two independent 4k displays with full cross-point routing. The Gefen ToolBox 4×4 Matrix Switcher for HDMI 4k/2k connects four sources to four 4k displays with full cross-point routing.

ePACS (Extended Professional Automation Control System) and Mini-ePACS

These IP bridge devices enable A/V and other components using RS-232 and IR to be controlled by and to communicate with GAVA or other automation systems using IP control. The new models now feature sense inputs to allow external control from switches or contacts, and IR inputs which will allow control from IR remote controls. Each uses a web-based, user-friendly configuration interface. The ePACS is equipped with 10 IR inputs, 10 IR outputs, 6 RS-232 serial ports, 10 sense inputs, 10 relay outputs and a 12v DC output. The Mini-ePACS is equipped with 2 IR inputs, 3 IR outputs, 2 RS-232 serial ports, 4 sense inputs and 2 relay outputs.

Adapt Deploys HARMAN’s Martin RUSH MH 3 Beam For East Coast House Party

AARHUS, Denmark – The East Coast House Party was the ideal outdoor nightclub environment with a high-tech lighting design by Swedish event company Adapt. Held yearly, the East Coast Party is an open-air event held in Östhammar, north of Stockholm. Deployed throughout the entire venue by Adapt event planners, HARMAN’s Martin RUSH Beam MH 3 lighting fixtures created the ultimate party scene.

“We had plenty of reasons to choose the Martin RUSH Beam over other lighting fixtures, but in short, RUSH lighting provided the long distance reach we required with the stage setup,” stated Viking Grandin, Senior Project Manager, Adapt. “RUSH’s small fixture size, high output and narrow beam capabilities allowed us to shoot out over the 5000-capacity crowd and the dance floor without any brightness issues,”

Adapt placed 16 of the Martin RUSH Beams on the stage floor and above a backdrop Martin LC-Series LED wall to create the spectacular effects. The rig also included a Maxedia Compact, numerous Atomic 3000’s, Jem Roadie Compact and an M6 console.

”The speed and the many possibilities of the RUSH Beam made it ideal for this type of club event,” Grandin continued. ”In just one fixture we had a tight beam, frosted beam and a flower effect. This made the lightshow very flexible and ever-changing.”

Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark, Martin Professional is a world leader in the creation of dynamic lighting solutions for the entertainment, architectural, and commercial sectors. Martin lighting solutions are industry standard on top tours and events, grace prestigious theatres, energize nightclubs and decorate major television studios around the globe. Other important areas of application are indoor and outdoor architecture and commercial applications where Martin products are increasingly being used to transform spaces with dynamic light. Martin also offers a range of advanced lighting controllers and media servers, as well as a complete line of smoke machines as a complement to intelligent lighting. The company operates the industry’s most complete and capable distributor network with local partners in nearly 100 countries. Martin Professional joined the HARMAN families of category-leading technology and lifestyle brands in March 2013.

It is a recognized world leader across its customer segments with premium brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon®, and Mark Levinson® and leading-edge connectivity, safety and audio technologies. The company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. Community R-Series Does Double Duty for CRC Soccer

Community R-Series Facing Back-to-Back Soccer Fields at CRCConsumnes River College (CRC) is a community college in South Sacramento, California. As a member of the Big 8 Conference in Northern California, CRC belongs to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and has an active physical education and athletics program including both men’s and women’s soccer. In 2012, CRC expanded their program with a new baseball and softball field. And, this spring, CRC completed two new soccer fields with back-to-back bleachers and a common press box that serves both fields.

As part of this expansion, CRC published an RFP (request for proposal) for sound systems for its new soccer fields. After considering several alternatives, they selected a design from Associated Sound of Sacramento using Community R-Series Loudspeakers.

Associated’s design uses two Community R.25-94TZ loudspeakers, located on each corner of the press box roof and aimed at the local bleachers. A single R.5COAX99T, located between the two R.25s, covers the visiting team’s seating on the opposite side of the field. The loudspeaker system is duplicated on the other side of the press box for the second soccer field.

To save money for their customer, Associated designed the system with a single electronics package using a multi-channel QSC amplifier, a Symmetrix Jupiter 8 DSP that doubles as a mixer and a pair of Audio-Technica wireless microphone receivers. Game announcers control the system from simple wall plates on each side of the press box and have no reason to open the locked equipment rack except to access a storage drawer.

Associated engineer Dave Veden said, “the system can be heard clearly in the bleachers and across both fields.” Veden added, “as we were finishing the job, the Dean of Physical Education asked if she could plug in her iPAD to listen to the new system. She was very happy with the musical sound quality.”

Esteemed Cleveland Church Opens a New Chapter with VARIA

Cleveland, OH – August 2013… Roots run deep at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, a cornerstone of Cleveland community and worship since 1931. Over the years, the church’s pulpit has played host to such luminaries as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

But this congregation with a strong sense of tradition is equally forward-thinking. The church’s 1,500-seat sanctuary, constructed in 1954, recently underwent an in-depth renovation, enhancing sound and vision with the addition of HD cameras, a switcher, and large-scale video screens, as well as a new Renkus-Heinz VARIA modular point source loudspeaker system.

As Tom George, Director of Installations for installer Eighth Day Sound, explains, the sound reinforcement aspect of the project presented some unique challenges. “Although the exterior of the building has a peaked roof, the sanctuary’s ceiling is flat, and relatively low – only around 25 feet in height. So going with a traditional line array would have created line-of-sight issues. Moreover, we were faced with a 400-pound weight restriction, which made the design even more problematic.”

With a need to ensure musicality for both its traditional gospel choir and plugged-in bands, as well as high intelligibility for all spoken aspects of the program, VARIA’s feature set seemed a good fit for the large, acoustically challenging space. With VARIA’s modular and flexible enclosures, Eighth Day could create a system to deliver the coverage of a traditional line array, but using fewer cabinets, thereby decreasing weight, visual impact, and cost.

The flown system consists of six VAX 101-7/6 (7.5 degree), two VAX101-22/69, and two VAX101-22 912 VARIA loudspeakers. The result is powerful, even coverage across the congregation’s main floor and balcony, from the front rows to the rear wall 100 feet away.

“When we listened to the box, we were convinced,” says George. “VARIA met the challenge – it delivered the coverage we needed, along with the power and performance. It looks great, and it sounds great.”

Olivet’s recent improvements mark Phase One of their in-depth renovation, with improved lighting and Web streaming next on the agenda. Through it all, elevating the live sound experience has been key for the Cleveland church.

“Olivet wants to reach younger people – they understand that the demographic is changing and a more contemporary worship style is a big part of that,” Tom George says. “VARIA was the perfect solution for this congregation’s message and their music.”

2013 MTV Video Music Awards to Use FUJINON Cabrio Cine-Style Lenses on Ikegami HDK-97ARRI Cameras for Filmic Look

Video Music Awards is the first to use revolutionary combination of Ikegami HD camera, ARRI Super 35mm sensor, and FUJINON Cabrio zooms for live, multi-camera HDTV broadcast

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division has announced that the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards will be the first live, multicamera HDTV broadcast to use Ikegami HDK-97ARRI large-format CMOS cameras paired with digital cinema style FUJINON PL19-90 Cabrio Premier PL Mount zoom lenses. On August 25th, 2013, MTV will air the VMAs live from Barclays Center, a new state-of-the-art entertainment arena in Brooklyn, NY at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

“By enabling a multicamera broadcast workflow with a visually stunning film look, this perfect synergy between the Ikegami/ARRI Super 35mm CMOS sensor camera and the compact Cabrio lens offers HDTV broadcasts the look we’ve long sought,” said Danny Walters, project engineer for Viacom Media Networks, Music Group and Logo, Technical Operations and Remote division in Nashville, TN.

New Remote Productions, Inc, a business unit within Viacom, operates a fleet of remote production vehicles for use by Viacom Networks as well as third-party customers. Four production trucks will be parked in and around the Barclays Center for live coverage of the Red Carpet, the VMA All Access live stream, and the primetime event being produced by Viacom’s Moonman Productions, to be directed by Hamish Hamilton.

Prior to the NAB convention this year, MTV placed a large equipment order directly with Ikegami, including eight HDK-97ARRI cameras and eight FUJINON PL 19-90 Cabrio lenses, which arrived in May 2013. Walters explained that, as “big believers in the large-format imager philosophy for TV entertainment,” they began searching for the large-format sensor camera first, including models by Sony and Red, and even took a hard look at the ARRI Alexa, But when Walters learned about the partnership between Ikegami and ARRI, the maker of the Super 35mm CMOS sensor, he chose the Ikegami HDK-97ARRI because of its ability to fuse the large-format imager with a traditional broadcast workflow.

“When it came time to select the lenses, it was an easy choice,” Walters said. “We’ve been very satisfied FUJINON users for a long time, and the fact that they had produced a lens that merges a broadcast- and ENG-friendly workflow with cine-style features and characteristics made it a natural choice for this application.”

The PL 19-90 Cabrio (Model ZK4.7×19) features an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making it suitable for use as a standard PL Mount lens or as an ENG-style lens. With the longest focal range of any lightweight zoom lens, the PL 19-90 covers a 31.5mm size sensor on a digital cinema style camera, with a T2.9 aperture range. Within Barclays Center, the cameras will be situated on pedestals, jibs, and Steadicams as well as in traditional handheld applications. Technicians from Fujifilm’s Optical Devices Division and Ikegami will be on-hand at Barclays Center during the live broadcast.

“While we’re early adopters of this innovative technology, we’re very excited about its potential to revolutionize the look of live entertainment and special events shows,” Walters said. Calling the VMAs one of the most demanding live shows Viacom produces each year, Walters added, “If the new camera gear survives this, it can survive anything.”
