SES Supports The Avett Brothers With Martin Audio MLA

SES (Special Event Services) of Winston Salem and Nashville recently supported the popular Avett Brothers on the first leg of their world tour with a Martin Audio MLA System 36 loudspeaker system.

Describing how SES became involved with the tour, Michael Brammer, SES Director of Touring Operations stated, “We did a trial show at the beginning of the tour, and due to the success of the MLA and the overwhelming positive fan response, the band decided to take us on the road. The band went from a bus and trailer to three trucks virtually overnight, in part because they fell in love with the Martin Audio MLA system.”

The Avett Brothers are led by Scott and Seth Avett on vocals and a variety of stringed and percussion instruments, along with Bob Crawford (double bass), Joe Kwon (cello) and Mike Marsh (drums). With several chart albums including I and Love and You (2009), The Carpenter (2012) and the upcoming Magpie and the Dandelion, they combine an eclectic mix of bluegrass, country, punk, pop, folk, rock and roll, honky-tonk and ragtime into solid original songs that have gotten Bob Dylan’s attention, among others.

With stops in Canada and Europe before wrapping up in the US this Fall, the Avetts headlined “The Carpenter” tour with acts such as The Old Crow Medicine Show and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals opening for them in a mix of amphitheatres, arenas and theaters including two sold out nights at Red Rocks.

In order to cover the crowds that averaged from 10 to 12,000 with a bump to 18,000 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, SES deployed a loudspeaker system consisting of 11 MLA enclosures and one MLD downfill cabinet per side along with six MLX ground-stacked subs per side. They also used an Avid Profile for FOH and a DiGiCo SD-9 for Monitors. When The Avett Brothers return for the final US leg, they will play larger arenas, so SES plans to add MLA Compact speakers for outfill to increase the coverage area.

Asked how MLA performed during the tour, Michael responded, “Their FOH Engineer Justin Glanville really likes the dynamic range and stereo imaging of the MLA system as The Avett Brothers are a very complex band. They play a variety of instruments and exchange them from song to song, so there’s a constant circle around the stage. The show ranges from very energetic moments down to just two guys singing into one microphone acoustically. It’s a very dynamic show and MLA really responds well to it.

“The coverage has been uniformly excellent in all kinds of venues, and MLA doesn’t take long to set up. In fact, Andrew Steelman, our Systems Tech was able to fly it in the morning and have Justin behind the console by lunchtime. The MLA system really has given us everything we’ve needed and more from a loudspeaker rig.”

Award-Winning Homebuilders Use ELAN g! To Capitalize On Housing Market Recovery

Consumer confidence is high, new home sales surged 8.3 percent in May and new home prices have climbed month over month in 2013, so it’s clear the housing market is recovering. Builders need to find ways to stand out and capitalize on this market growth, and one way to do so is to offer things that others don’t even consider, like total home control. Award-winning builders Jim Blansfield of Danbury, Connecticut-based Blansfield Builders, Inc. and Josh Wynne of Sarasota, Florida-based Josh Wynne Construction have both partnered with local integrators and found huge success using the ELAN® g! Entertainment and Control System to help close new home sales.

“I’m a believer in ‘the new normal’ way of thinking,” Blansfield said, “and with the affordable and expandable control solutions made possible by ELAN g!, home control is the new normal! In the past two years, I’ve closed several new homes by demoing the g! system for prospective clients. I have a g! system in my own home, so I’m the first person to say how easy it is to use, and my clients are consistently impressed that I include technology in my designs and recommendations, because many other builders minimize the importance of home technologies.”

Since partnering with the Danbury integration firm Structured Home Solutions, Blansfield has built 13 homes that include ELAN g! systems of varying size and complexity. Whether the new buyers were looking for enhanced security, HVAC scheduling, lighting, irrigation and pool controls, or super simple whole-home audio and video systems, every client received a custom solution tailored to their specific needs. From a business perspective, Blansfield knows that his knowledge, appreciation and passion for technology place him in an entirely different category from other builders.

“Any builders who resist change and aren’t prepared to talk to clients about integrated home control solutions will hurt themselves in the long run,” he said. “I even push remodel clients to install the ELAN g! system because it adds so much value to the home, and brings it into the 21st century more so than new countertops or an updated bathroom could ever do.”

Josh Wynne has had similar success integrating advanced home technologies with the ELAN g! system, and has teamed up with Sarasota integrator SmartHouse Integration to offer his new clients the best that modern home technology has to offer. Wynne is building four new LEED Platinum certified homes in 2013, each featuring the ELAN g! system to control core subsystems such as AV, HVAC, security, lighting, window shades, irrigation, garage doors, pool controls and surveillance cameras.

According to Wynne, “I’ve strived to make a basic home automation package standard for every new home I build. When smartphones came on the market a lot more people started to see how easily these advanced systems could integrate into their homes and help them live more simply and comfortably, and I’ve used that culture movement to benefit my business. Most of my projects are relatively big budget, around the $1 million mark, but there’s absolutely no reason that a $250,000 home shouldn’t include a multi-room audio system, an integrated HVAC or lighting system that saves money and energy, or a security and surveillance system that can be accessed remotely from any smartphone or tablet.

Both builders agree that determining the buyers’ interests is key to selling advanced home control solutions, whether they love music and want multi-room audio or desire heightened peace of mind and would benefit from a mobile-accessible security and surveillance system. From there it’s a small leap to demo the entire ELAN g! system and highlight all the trappings that easy-to-use home control offers. Another thing they agree on is the need to use a reliable, qualified integrator to make the homeowner’s technological dreams a practical reality. That’s why they’ve each partnered with a top integration firm in their respective regions, and worked together to craft custom solutions that make every home the perfect living environment for the owners.

FOH Engineer and Producer Brad Divens Chooses Waves Plugins for Platinum Finnish Rock Act HIM

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL, August 29, 2013 — Front-of-house engineer and producer Brad Divens (Garbage, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Jane’s Addiction, Linkin Park) is one of a growing number of cutting-edge engineers turning to live tools from Waves Audio.

Divens notes, “When working with platinum Finnish rock act HIM, Waves plugins allow me to be as creative with my console layout as my imagination can dream up. I love the ability to use SSL E Channel on the drums and SSL G-EQ on the keyboards, API 550B and the CLA 3A Compressor/Limiter on bass and the VEQ4 and Renaissance Axx on guitar. Parallel compression on the drums is something I have been doing for a while now using the SSL G-Channel Buss Compressor and the PuigTec EQP-1A on the drum group and also on the parallel drum group. With Waves plugins I’m able to create the signal chain very easily.”

As with any act, HIM presents certain unique challenges, and Waves plugins are there to help. Divens elaborates: “With HIM I have a very dynamic singer, Ville Valo, and I also have wedges, side fills and back line – all competing with the lead vocal. The C6 Multiband Compressor allows me to compensate and adjust on a song-per-song basis, depending on what is going on around Ville and also the style in which he is singing. The PAZ Analyzer is also a big help in a setting where I’m not carrying a full FOH package. It allows me the ability to spot something in the mix as opposed to thinking it might be a PA problem.”

On the road and at home in the studio, Divens is a Waves fan through-and-through. He says, “My absolute must have Waves plugins are SSL 4000 Collection, API Collection, CLA Classic Compressors, V-Series, NLS Non-Linear Summer, C6 Multiband Compressor, Q10 Equalizer, and Doubler. Having the Mercury bundle allows me to use all the outboard gear I’ve ever wanted to use in a live setting without actually having to carry it. I’ve got all the greats right at my fingertips. Pure sonic bliss.”

Brad Divens is part of the growing trend among live sound professionals who are making the move to the next-generation workflow with WavesLive. Visit www.waves.com and www.waveslive.com for more information.

Integrator Finds The Sound Of Success With The Niles Cynema Soundfield In-Wall Soundbar

International custom electronics integrator Jim Beaumont of HomeTech Europe has installed hundreds, if not thousands of different products throughout his career, and he’s never seen anything quite as unique as the Niles Cynema Soundfield in-wall soundbar from Core Brands. As the first of its kind, the Cynema Soundfield naturally has some ‘wow’ factor to it, but according to Beaumont it’s the practical application of a high-quality soundbar that virtually disappears that’s making it fly off the shelves.

“When I heard about the Niles Cynema Soundfield I knew some of my clients would love it, but I didn’t think I’d sell 10 of them in the first month!” Beaumont said. “Niles recognized that homeowners want good sound to match their attractive wall-mounted TVs, but they also want it to be as unobtrusive as the TV itself. With TVs getting thinner and thinner, the TV manufacturers have run out of room for good speakers, and the only solution when your TV is an inch off the wall is to put the speakers into the wall itself.”

The Cynema Soundfield doesn't require cutting the wall studs and the grille can be painted any color to match any decor.

Beaumont says his clients and the designers he works with immediately see the value in a soundbar that can be painted over and literally disappear into the wall. For years, in-wall speakers have been the preferred solution of integrators and interior designers because they blend into the room, but they can be expensive and difficult to install in an existing room because of wiring and additional components such as amplifiers and AV receivers. The Cynema Soundfield solves this issue because it requires just two wires, one for audio signal and one for power, and it can be installed in less than an hour by a certified Niles installer, even if the TV is already hung on the wall.

“It’s easy to sell because it can be used in retrofits, new homes, board rooms and even retail locations like hotel lobbies, without anyone even knowing it’s there,” Beaumont continued. “Several of my clients were so excited when I showed it to them that they bought multiple units for multiple rooms. I think the market for this innovative premium sound solution could be huge, and I’m going to sell as many of them as I can.”

And it’s easy to complete the home theater experience with one of Niles’ small, powerful subwoofers and wireless kit, so the sub can go anywhere the homeowners want without running wires. The wireless kit hooks right up to the Cynema Soundfield’s amplifier, so there’s no separate amp or receiver necessary.

What makes the Cynema Soundfield so unique is its rail system; the only thing that gets cut into the wall is a thin metal rail that sits flush with the drywall, and then the three individual speakers and the amplifier simply lock into the rail. With such a fast installation time, models that match TVs of all sizes, plenty of power and fidelity (30W RMS per speaker, three speakers per soundbar) and the ability to paint the grill and make the speaker invisible, the Niles Cynema Soundfield is a hot item for electronics integrators and design-conscious homeowners everywhere.

The Cynema Soundfield includes inputs for optical audio, HDMI and analog audio, and can also be integrated into a multi-room audio system. It features autosense turn-on so that no separate remote is required, and it simply turns on whenever it receives an audio signal from either the TV or a connected multi-room audio system.

HRS Control Launches HRS KP Automation App to Simplify Control of Multiple AJA Ki Pro Units in Production Environments

HRS Control has introduced two new software products for automated control of AJA’s popular Ki Pro family of file-based recorder/players including Ki Pro, Ki Pro Mini, Ki Pro Rack and Ki Pro Quad. HRS KP Automation and the next-level HRS KP Automation PRO are dedicated Mac OSX applications that provide simple, easy control of multiple Ki Pro units.

“HRS KP Automation has been designed from the ground up to enhance the out-of-the-box experience of Ki Pro customers,” says Drew Taylor with HRS Control. “We saw a lot of interest from AJA customers who wanted gang control capabilities for their Ki Pros. They were looking for a simplified, cost-effective solution for Ki Pro only control; they didn’t need to build customized solutions with our UDC (Universal Device Control) product. So we devised a completely new application to control multiple Ki Pros from one location.”

“Our Ki Pro products have been incredibly popular for live event, professional AV and on-set broadcast and film productions. Many customers use multiple Ki Pro’s and we’re pleased that the smart engineers at HRS Control have provided a plug-and-play solution for automating gang configuration, record and playback for AJA’s Ki Pro customers,” said Nick Rashby, president, AJA Video Systems.

Developed for Mac desktop computers, HRS KP Automation is HRS Control’s first Apple desktop based app. “It’s groundbreaking for us,” Taylor says. “All of our other products are Windows-based, but a large majority of Ki Pro users have Apple computers because of the strong ties between AJA and Apple.

“The new app can be downloaded and used right away,” he reports. “There’s no learning curve, and no training is required. You put HRS KP Automation to action immediately.”

HRS KP Automation is a base-level product offering all the features and functionality that most Ki Pro users require and supports Ki Pro, Ki Pro Rack, Ki Pro Quad and Ki Pro Mini. With Ki Pro Automation “you can execute gang playback and record, download clips and do file transfers to your local Mac or network hard drive for back up,” Taylor explains.

Major features of HRS KP Automation include:
* Configuration of unlimited Ki Pros
* Downloading multiple Ki Pro clips to local and network storage
* Gang playback
* Gang stop
* Gang recording
* Gang loading of matching clips
* Loading individual clips, including stop or play after load

The app also displays current time code, current clip name and shows the progress of clip downloads as well as proving users a range of additional status information for each Ki Pro. It also permits scheduling of recording, playback and downloads.

HRS KP Automation PRO includes all the features of HRS KP Automation and more. The PRO version adds RS422 control (supported by Ki Pro, Ki Pro Mini and Ki Pro Rack, but not by Ki Pro Quad) for the ability to load a clip and jump to a specific point in the time code. It also gives you the ability to upload clips from a network or local computer and to transfer clips from Ki Pro to Ki Pro. In addition, it enables users to store hot keys on the fly for any Ki Pro product that load a clip and jump to time code – a playback utility that people with more demanding live productions, such as sports replays, are looking for,” explained Taylor.

The apps’ clean and clear interface design looks and feels familiar to users of AJA Ki Pro products. The layout features two columns. The left-hand column features buttons for transport commands and a download button for each Ki Pro unit. The right-hand column always shows clips on the selected Ki Pro; downloading is tracked with a progress bar. Selecting more than one Ki Pro unit for control triggers gang control with easy one-button execution.

HRS Control will be taking orders for HRS KP Automation at IBC in mid-September and shipping the app after the show. The company is accepting pre-orders for HRS KP Automation PRO, which is expected to release later this year.

“No dongles are required, and customers can sign up for a 30-day free trial before purchasing and downloading the app,” Taylor points out. “HRS KP Automation users can upgrade at any time to the PRO version.

“Ki Pros are great products – their users are really happy with them. We’re proud to provide an automated tool to make multiple Ki Pro systems even easier to use in production environments.”

Kyoorius Designyatra 2013: ‘Create Change’ theme delivered for design professionals

See Dataton and Video Design at Booth D90 at InfoComm India 2013

Video Design provides Dataton WATCHOUT to manage event content

This year’s Kyoorius Designyatra event was held from 29-31 August at Goa’s Grand Hyatt Hotel, India. The event was themed ‘Create Change’ attracting high-profile presenters including BARTKRESA design, The Moment Factory and Facebook. Kyoorius Designyatra is one of the top five annual design conferences. Ensuring its success, event partner Engineered Production looked no further than Video Design, Dataton Premium Partner for India to provide technical video products and services including WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software to manage content across multiple displays. At the end of BARTKRESA Design’s presentation on Video Mapping, both Bart Kresa and Vijay Sabhlok at Video Design demonstrated how WATCHOUT can be used to do amazing things with video projections. The session received standing ovations from the audience.

Create Change

“The ‘Create Change’ theme pushed the envelope and challenged professionals to use design as a tool to create real change – change that’s beyond the aesthetic,” said Rajesh Kejriwal, founder and CEO, Kyoorius.

“The event was a tremendous success thanks to the amazing services completed by our event partners, Engineered Production and Video Design.

“Using large-format displays proved vital in educating, informing and telling the story of communication and design to packed audiences of over 1,350 design professionals,” added Kejriwal.

We make it happen

Understanding the client brief and requirements, Jasjeet Singh, director at Engineered Productions said: “We immediately agreed to use WATCHOUT multi-image display and presentation software to enable larger than life presentations and big wow factor.”

Engineered Production and Video Design delivered a solution comprising an impressive 9 x 40 feet wide central front-projection screen (4800 x 1080 pixels) using an array of projectiondesign® F32 series projectors. An additional two 12 x 7.5 feet wide vertical rear-projection screens were positioned on each side (1080 x 1920 pixels) using Christie® HD10K-M digital projectors.

“Despite being a simple and straightforward installation, it did have its technical challenges including the combination different formats and resolutions as well as multiple data capture. In addition, live updates and twitter feeds were required to be shown at the end of every presentation,” explained Vijay Sabhlok, managing partner at Video Design.

“WATCHOUT played a central role and thanks to its ingenuity and flexibility we could achieve a lot in the limited time we had.”

Knowledge transfer: BARTKRESA Design inspires the creative use of projection mapping

Projection design studio, BARTKRESA Design presented a presentation and then followed by a workshop of Video Mapping. Bart Kresa, founder, BARTKRESA Design, said: “Presenting at the Kyoorius Designyatra was a privilege, and it was a great forum for knowledge transfer.”

BARTKRESA design is internationally renowned for delivering unique projection designs to large corporations, movie studios, and multimedia conglomerates, including Oprah Winfrey, Paramount Pictures, the Grammy Awards, HBO, General Motors, Warner Brothers, FOX, and ABC.

Adding to the vibrancy and ‘wow factor’ of the entire event, Video Design provided WATCHOUT and Christie® projectors that were used by BARTKRESA Design to map video onto a pyramid shaped structure in the foyer of Goa’s Grand Hyatt. The pyramid greeted visitors to the event and showcased the potential of video installation art.

Lars Sandlund, chief operating officer at Dataton concluded: “WATCHOUT is the perfect tool for designers and creative professionals to use to manage multiple video displays, audio, live video feeds and much more. We’re delighted that our trusted Premium Partner, Video Design has been so integral in this event using our technology. We look forward to future education hosted by Video Design in India to enrich, enthral and educate video professionals.”

Dataton and Video Design will exhibit at Booth D90 at InfoComm India 2013 at the Bombay Exhibition Center, Mumbai, India.
