BHV Broadcast to Broaden Appeal of Syntax Up-Converter Series at IBC 2013

IBC Hall 4 Stand 4.C75

Syntax Will be Demonstrated with Closed Captions Capability for the First Time

Owslebury, UK – BHV Broadcast, BHV Broadcast, manufacturer of rate-converters, up-converters and the innovative coax-powering solution “Video Ghost” is to show integration with Microvideo’s technology at IBC2013, giving closed captions capability to BHV’s Syntax up-converter.

Across the globe, there is an ever-growing requirement in the industry for closed captions as part of the retention of metadata through the broadcast chain. Now broadcasters and producers can enjoy the benefit of Syntax’s unrivalled quality HD up-conversion with closed captions. BHV’s award-winning Syntax up-scaler integration with Microvideo’s HDB 300 bridge (which in itself provides simultaneous data management of control signals, trans-coding, decoding, bridging and copying) will allow broadcasters to utilise the artefact-free performance of the Syntax in distribution and production chains with massive metadata handling capability.

BHV Broadcast’s managing director, Julian Hiorns, says “We are delighted to announce the technology partnership with Cambridge-based Microvideo. The company really understands the needs of complex metadata workflows and is a great industry association for us.”

BHV’s Syntax and Syntax Essence continue to lead the field in picture quality with some viewers finding it nearly impossible to tell native HD from SD footage upscaled by Syntax. Syntax uses Super-Resolution Bandlet technology held by some to be the natural successor to Motion Compensation.

Last year it was revealed that the key BBC Drama strand “EastEnders “ uses Syntax to overcome the challenges of its aging production backlot.

PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS PROVIDES INSPIRATION AT MEGAFEST 2013

When an estimated 75,000 people converged on downtown Dallas from August 29-31 for MegaFest, the nation’s largest inspirational family festival, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was on hand to provide all wireless equipment and frequency coordination for the multi-venue festival.

Produced by MegaFest Incorporated in conjunction with Mike Walker Creative, MegaFest is a family-friendly festival that brings together the best of T.D. Jakes Ministries, with conferences including Woman Thou Art Loosed, Manpower, MegaKidz and the Mega-Youth Experience. The festival featured inspiration, music, entertainment and seminars, along with appearances by Oprah Winfrey, Babyface, Joel and Victoria Osteen, Jennifer Hudson, Kerry Washington, Steve Harvey, Brandy, Ray Chew and other celebrity guests.

Oprah Winfrey’s Life Class kicked off the three-day festival, which took place at the American Airlines Center (AAC). The main program was broadcast from the AAC, with several other large events held at the Dallas Convention Center. PWS supplied all the wireless ENG gear as well, including Lectrosonics microphones and IFBs, to coordinate this multi-venue festival.

The package that was supplied by PWS included Shure Axient microphone systems and PSM1000 In Ear Monitor systems, as well as Telex BTR800 wireless communications for all events, at both locations surrounding the festival. In addition, PWS provided several of its own products, including its GX-8 Combiners, DB-8 Distribution Systems, and its Helical and Domed Helical Antennas.

While PWS provided all the wireless gear and coordination, the company worked closely with both Spectrum Sound and Crossroads Audio, who provided PA and monitor gear to the American Airlines Center and the Dallas Convention Center. PWS was responsible for coordinating nearly 400 frequencies between the two separate venues including eight performance spaces set up in the Dallas Convention Center, the constantly changing needs for media coverage, and the high level of DTV congestion throughout the Dallas area. PWS’s five-man crew worked closely with the festival’s main production company and the local sound companies at each venue to ensure the coordination of all wireless microphones, in-ear monitors and show communications were flawless.

“Having worked with Mike Walker in the past at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas, we were glad that he decided to contact us for our wireless gear and expertise for an event of this scale,” says Jim Van Winkle, general manager of PWS. “Being able to provide the equipment and services for an event of this size and scope is what we do best, and the fact that the event went as smoothly as it did is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the PWS team.”

HARMAN’s BSS Audio at the Heart of Audio Upgrade for England’s Coventry Cathedral

COVENTRY, United Kingdom – In need of a complete overhaul of its audio signal distribution, the historic Coventry Cathedral recently underwent a major upgrade, bringing it into the digital age with a HARMAN BSS Audio Soundweb London system. The famous Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during World War II and eventually rebuilt, has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,000 years. The installation was handled by AV provider RaceTech AV led by Robin Dibble, head of audio engineering and responsible for an upgrade to the church’s audio system 20 years ago. All BSS Audio equipment was supplied by UK HARMAN distributor Sound Technology, Ltd.

With an outdated analog audio system, the quality of the cathedral’s audio was suffering. When Dibble was brought back to update the system, he knew a BSS Audio Soundweb London solution would be the best for the needs of the facility. “With our original solution, no matter what area of the Cathedral a microphone was plugged into, the system was inherently time aligned in both directions, both up and down the length of the building,” remembered Dibble. “We used a huge rack of hand-wired summing amps, signal delays and modular automatic microphone mixers.”

More than two decades later, the same solution is easily attainable with modern digital electronics from BSS Audio. “This provides greater reliability, lower energy consumption and lower running costs,” added Dibble.

Dibble deployed a BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-160, configured with 16 mic/line inputs. By expanding the I/O capacity with an 8-input BLU-BIB and two 8-output BLU-BOB breakout boxes, Dibble was able to increase the routing capability to 24-in/16-out, using BSS Audio’s BLU link digital audio bus between devices.

“Using Soundweb has made everything so much easier,” Dibble explained. “What was previously a huge issue, with so many channels requiring EQ and delay, is now a breeze — and there is so much processing power that just one BLU-160 is operating at only 52% capacity. And since the entire solution is built into Soundweb, it provides a completely different way of optimizing the sound.”

“As for BLU link, this provides big system cost savings as there are no network switches, no extra cards and it’s self redundant. The result is a better sound quality, and I have only had positive comments, as no one believed such a sound as this would be possible,” added Dibble.

The base for this system is installed in a console near the rear of the cathedral, for use by the clergy. In addition, the equipment rack, which houses the amps, DSP and radio receivers, is in a dedicated room immediately in the back.

Within the church, the reaction to the upgrade has been overwhelmingly positive as well, “The audio installation provided by RaceTech has greatly improved the audio quality of our corporate worship and the diverse range of events the Cathedral hosts. The sound is clear and evenly distributed, and the system is coping well, utilized in isolated areas for small gatherings through to full congregations of 1200 people,” said Jenny Thurston, Head Verger for Coventry Cathedral.

For Dibble, the BSS Audio Soundweb London system has made the whole process incredibly straightforward. “The BSS experience is never anything other than positive. I have never looked elsewhere as this has been by far the most cost-effective solution.”

Moog Announces Discontinuation of Little Phatty Analog Synthesizer

ASHEVILLE, NC – September 9, 2013Moog Music today announced the discontinuation of the Little Phatty Stage II analog synthesizer. Moog plans to continue building a limited quantity of units at their factory in downtown Asheville while parts and materials last, which is not expected to be more than two months. The Little Phatty was released in 2006 as a tribute to the life and legacy of Moog Music founder and synthesizer pioneer, Bob Moog. Following the passing of Dr. Moog, The Little Phatty was the first Moog synthesizer designed by Moog Music’s Chief Engineer, Cyril Lance.

“After Bob’s passing, we faced the immense challenge of creating a new synthesizer that would embody the values that we all treasured in Bob,” Lance recalls. “We worked around the clock to develop an instrument that was founded on his continually forward-looking view of synthesis.”

Over the course of its seven-year production run, the Little Phatty has gone through three incantations including The Tribute, Stage I, and Stage II editions. During that time, the Little Phatty has become one of the best selling professional analog synthesizers in history. Its sonic impact on modern music can be heard on thousands of records, and its signature swooped-back silhouette can be seen in top recording facilities around the world as well as on the stages of internationally touring musical acts such as Rush, Jack White, Queens of The Stone Age, No Doubt, Bernie Worrell and the hit shows American Idol, Nashville and Portlandia.

“The Little Phatty represented a key foundational element in what would become the future of Moog Music,” said Michael Adams, Moog Music President & CEO. “It was the synthesizer that proved to the world that Moog Music would continue to create market leading, forward-thinking synthesizers. The fact that the Little Phatty remains an industry standard instrument for artists and producers to this day, is a testament to its design.”

The Little Phatty Stage II is still available in limited quantities at stocking dealers in standard and custom colors while supplies last. For pricing and availability, please visit www.moogmusic.com/dealers.

Mini Documentary and Promotional Incentives

Moog Music released a mini-doc entitled Moog Lives. Play On.: The Making of the Little Phatty today which can be viewed on the Moog website. In the video, Moog Music President Mike Adams, Chief Engineer Cyril Lance, and Product Development Specialist Steve Dunnington recall how the Little Phatty came to life, the challenges that were faced when Dr. Moog fell ill, and how they were eventually overcome to create this one of a kind instrument.

As a thank you to existing Little Phatty owners, Moog Music is offering a free Little Phatty Gig Bag (an $80 value) with the purchase of the Little Phatty CV Output Modification. The modification adds one gate and four CV outputs to the Little Phatty for those desiring greater expressive flexibility. Moog Music is also offering a free percussion and legacy preset pack for Phatty owners available via down-load on its website.

Hal Leonard Publishes 2nd Volume of Power Tools for Studio One 2

Second volume of the most comprehensive book about PreSonus’ powerful Studio One 2

Montclair, NJ (September 9, 2013) – Hal Leonard Books, the musician’s best source of books on the music business, audio technology, instrument history, and more, has released the second volume of the book on Studio One 2, Power Tools for Studio One 2, by Studio One maven Larry the O. Both volumes are the only comprehensive references to Studio One, containing a substantial amount of material not documented anywhere, including in the user manual.

Whereas Power Tools for Studio One 2, Volume 1 orients readers to the program and teaches them how to record, play, and edit audio and MIDI, Volume 2 takes users deeper into advanced applications such as working with loops and video as well as the all-important processes of music production, mixing, mastering, and sharing their work with the world. Volume 2 explores each topic in comprehensive detail, exposing every aspect of subjects like plug-ins, automation, and the use of control surfaces.

The transparent integration of mixing, mastering, and sharing is fundamental to Studio One 2’s amazing production power. In this valuable resource, Studio One expert Larry the O demonstrates how to jump from a mastering session back to a mix to make changes, which are then instantly updated in the mastering session; how to export masters to an audio file, to a DDP file that can be sent to a professional mastering house, or to a set of compressed files for digital downloading; and how to upload directly from Studio One 2 to online services, such as SoundCloud.

This new volume discusses important features released since the first volume was written, such as the new Macros feature and Nimbit, the PreSonus acquired e-commerce technology that makes selling music, merchandise and tickets to gigs and events easy and convenient. The author includes several helpful appendices that address troubleshooting common problems users encounter. The included DVD-ROM shows in easy-to-grasp videos how to create Musicloop and Audioloop files, how to use Studio One’s metering capabilities, how to integrate external processors with Pipeline, how to use the Project page, “true stem mixing”, as well as song and project integration. Volume 2 also details the program’s unique capacity to allow users to trade tricks through PreSonus Exchange. Thanks to author’s friendly tone and entertaining writing style, this informative book is far from dry and makes an interesting and easy-to-follow read.

Volume 1 received lots of industry accolades:

“This book is the ‘straight line’ between booting the program and creating a project. While it’s suitable for those getting started with Studio One Pro, there are plenty of tips, shortcuts, and workflow ideas that existing users will find helpful as well.” – Craig Anderton

“This has got to be the most comprehensive book in learning everything from the basics to advanced techniques in Studio One. Larry the O takes you all the way. Highly recommended for beginners or pros.” – Rick Naqvi, Vice President, Sales, PreSonus

“Power Tools for Studio One 2 does a fantastic job of getting you up and running in Studio One 2 and guiding you into some of the more complex functions that aren’t covered in the application’s documentation.” – Pro Audio Review

“Larry the O has decades of experience educating readers about music technology, and his friendly tone adds to the book’s ‘here’s some cool stuff I bet you didn’t know’ nature. And there is stuff you won’t know in here… this book promises (and delivers) information about Studio One 2 that even PreSonus doesn’t document anywhere.” – Mike Metlay, editor, Recording magazine

About the Author
Larry the O has spent more than 30 years as a music and audio professional in nearly every aspect of the industry.
