PBS Installs Nexidia Dialogue Search to Improve Searches of Vast Asset Library

ATLANTA — Sept. 13, 2013 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced that PBS has installed Nexidia Dialogue Search and will use it with its new media asset management (MAM) system to enhance search capabilities. The PBS Media Operations Center is ingesting years’ worth of archived video into the new MAM. Dialogue Search gives a broad array of PBS users — from editors to library managers to brand managers — an effective way to search its vast video archive in order to repurpose the media.

“We purchased Nexidia Dialogue Search technology to give users an advanced search feature that would be easy to implement, easy to use, and easy to maintain,” said Steve Wynn, director of engineering for the PBS Media Operations Center. “While we continue to roll out our primary MAM platform, it’s incredibly valuable that we can simply aim Dialogue Search at our existing media collections and get immediate results. Dialogue Search provides the ability to search spoken-word content in a practical solution with a familiar Web-based tool.”

Dialogue Search gives PBS a richer, more powerful, and more elegant search utility than the simple, limited metadata search it gets from current associated platforms. Having faster, more efficient access to the content library helps save time and effort during program production, but more importantly, creates new opportunities to present licensed content to viewers via online platforms and member stations.

PBS’ roadmap calls for having full and immediate access to its complete catalog of master, high-resolution media assets via an intuitive, extensible search tool that can be used as easily as consumers now use Google(TM) and YouTube(TM) to find content. Dialogue Search will help PBS to achieve its ultimate goal of being able to find and retrieve content by effectively combining the best of dialogue-based and metadata search within a simple user experience for researchers, editors, producers, and others.

“Having a company of PBS’ size and prominence choose Dialogue Search shows just how compelling the product is,” said Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s media and entertainment division. “The implementation of a MAM is always a huge undertaking, but it is only the beginning of being able to search through your media. Adding tools like Dialogue Search is the next step in making everything ultimately discoverable, especially when users are dealing with three decades worth of media.”

Nexidia Dialogue Search can be seen at IBC2013 on stand 3.A46. More information about Nexidia Dialogue Search and other Nexidia products is available at www.nexidia.tv.

Primestream Demonstrates FORK Edit-While-Capture Workflow in XDCAM With Avid Media Composer at IBC2013

AMSTERDAM — Sept. 13, 2013 — Primestream(R) today announced that its acclaimed FORK(TM) Production Suite for managing and automating broadcast workflows can now record XDCAM(R) MXF files that will update in Avid(R) Media Composer(R) while recording. This breakthrough allows sports and news operations to use the popular long-GOP codec with the craft editor, and at the same time gain the benefits of the FORK Production automation and media asset management platform for I/O, logging, tagging, proxy editing, workflow management, and archiving.

“We have already achieved Edit-While-Capture for the iFrame codec, and now we are happy to offer the same capability with XDCAM for long-GOP, because it has been of high interest to our customers using Avid craft editors,” said Claudio Lisman, Primestream president and CEO. “Customers are looking for flexibility in their systems, and this move demonstrates our commitment to providing cutting-edge options with industry-standard codecs and editors.”

The Edit-While-Capture functionality for Media Composer is an optional component for the FORK Media Player, the I/O application in the FORK Production system. It allows users to access the ingesting video as a live stream in real-time proxy and high-resolution through all the standard FORK Production Client tools, as well as other craft editors, while an Avid Media Composer editor continues to work with the growing file. Once the Avid editor has sent the clip from FORK to Media Composer, the clip duration will continue to grow in the project with no need for additional action.

Primestream will conduct ongoing demonstrations of this new functionality during IBC2013 on stand 7.D21. Visit www.primestream.com for more information.

Nexidia’s Dialogue Search v1.4 Features Adobe Premiere Pro CC Extension, AAF Export Functionality

ATLANTA — Sept. 13, 2013 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced the latest release of Nexidia Dialogue Search, which features significant improvements and functionality designed to speed time-to-market and reduce production costs for media organizations. Key features of Nexidia Dialogue Search v1.4 include seamless integration with Adobe(R) Premiere(R) Pro — in addition to AAF compatibility and export functionality.

Built on Nexidia’s patented phonetic search technology and a newly designed, rich API, Dialogue Search is a breakthrough application that rapidly searches through massive media libraries to find spoken words or phrases in the audio in just seconds. In addition to dramatically shrinking logging and transcription costs and speeding production, Dialogue Search enables media organizations to maximize the value of any content stored within their archives by opening up previously untapped avenues for monetization and value creation, such as licensing and repurposing content.

“In the short time since we first released Dialogue Search, feedback from our clients has been overwhelmingly positive, and enthusiastic users continue to ask for additional ways to maximize its value,” commented Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s Media and Entertainment division. “For Dialogue Search v1.4, we focused on the most critical features that directly impact production costs and speed to market — tighter integration and compatibility. Those features, which enable dramatically improved workflows and a more seamless user experience, are highlighted in our new Adobe Premiere Pro extension.”

ADOBE PREMIERE PRO EXTENSION AND API INTEGRATION
The integration with Adobe Premiere Pro enables users to leverage all of Dialogue Search’s functionality directly from Adobe Premiere Pro’s interface without having to leave the application. Simply by adding the Nexidia Dialogue Search extension to their workspaces, users can preview search results in a video player without having to scroll through numerous clips to find a specific sound bite or clip. Additionally, they can now simply drag and drop a clip into a project with the search terms and timecodes automatically displayed as markers on their timelines. The extension is available for Premiere Pro versions 6.0 and higher, including the recently released CC version.

“Nexidia’s newest release of Dialogue Search represents a significant leap forward in terms of user experience and ease of use within the Adobe Premiere Pro environment,” said Simon Williams, director of strategic relations at Adobe. “Adobe Premiere Pro users now have a more powerful tool to fully leverage the capabilities of both of our market-leading products.”

The new Dialogue Search API is not confined to Adobe Premiere Pro. It has also been designed to enable other third-party applications to integrate Dialogue Search seamlessly into existing media asset management (MAM) systems and online video platforms.

AAF COMPATIBILITY AND EXPORT FUNCTIONALITY
Nexidia Dialogue Search v1.4 also features AAF compatibility in addition to the existing Final Cut Pro(R) 7 XML compatibility. Once a file has been identified, users can now export the key words and phrases found as timecoded markers directly to Avid(R) Media Composer(R), Avid Pro Tools(R), and other leading video and audio editing products that support AAF. With the addition of AAF, Dialogue Search now supports export to all major editing applications so that users can quickly find the media they need and immediately start editing on the timeline.

PROXIMITY-BASED SEARCHING AND FASTER INDEXING
To make searches for words or phrases in Dialogue Search even more advanced, v1.4 features proximity-based searching, enabling users to identify words or phrases quickly that appear within a designated time frame. For instance, users can run a search looking only for instances where a specific set of words were spoken within X seconds of each other. Similarly, the newest version also boasts even faster index times — up to 100 times faster than real time per CPU — allowing almost instantaneous searching of new content or quick indexing of existing massive archives.

Nexidia Dialogue Search v1.4 will be available in the third quarter of 2013, with current customers in a support agreement receiving the new update at no additional cost. Nexidia will demonstrate Dialogue Search v1.4 at IBC2013 on stand 3.A46.

The Union League of Philadelphia Completes Major A/V Renovation Using Bittree’s 969-S Programmable Switched Ground Patchbays

GLENDALE, Calif. — Sept. 11, 2013 — Bittree today announced that its patching solutions are playing a central role in a new, state-of-the-art audio/visual installation for the landmark Union League of Philadelphia. The Bittree patchbays and patch cords enable fast and easy signal routing for a complex array of microphones, projectors, and monitors in The Union League’s historic Lincoln Hall.

With a rich history dating back to Civil War days, The Union League of Philadelphia is one of the city’s oldest and most venerated civic institutions, and has been ranked as the No. 1 city club in the United States. When it undertook a major renovation of the Lincoln Hall’s A/V capabilities, The Union League hired Philadelphia-based Metropolitan Acoustics to provide A/V design and consulting. RTS Unified Communications installed Bittree’s 969-S programmable, switched ground audio patchbays as the system integrator for the project.

“This was my first project using Bittree equipment, and I found the 969-S very straightforward and easy to configure. Since this installation requires several different signal types with wide voltage differences, the 969-S offers the cleanest signal and best grounding structure for protection against noise,” said Brian Dempsey, project manager, RTS Unified Communications. “Since it’s programmable, it builds more flexibility into the system and allows us to make quick changes while enabling future repurposing of the product.”

An important consideration for The Union League’s new A/V network was to preserve, as much as possible, the historic architectural features of the Lincoln Hall, including ornate woodwork and lighting fixtures. The Bittree 969-S patchbays supported this effort by enabling a design for very small wall plates located in four different spots in the ballroom, and accommodating up to six microphone connections. From those wall plates, the patchbays handle patching of each mic into an analog audio console and then to audio distribution amplifiers. The patching equipment also enables audio signals to be patched to recording equipment in other areas of the room.

“Termination using the Bittree E3 rear interface connectors was extremely easy; we could do 16 of them in five minutes. This was a big cost-saver since we were using union labor,” said Dempsey. “Also, Bittree’s support services are first-rate. On very short notice, the support tech was able to provide me with an electrical schematic as well as a spreadsheet for labeling the system. This might seem trivial, but it saved us several hours of effort having to figure out the various connections.”

“For an organization as prestigious and steeped in history as The Union League to be using our equipment is a major accomplishment,” said Glenn Garrard, CEO, Bittree. “We’re glad our patching systems are playing such an integral role in supporting The Union League’s ability to put on high-quality A/V presentations for its members.”

“Like Dolby, the hallmark of Christie’s success has been its continuous ability to deliver innovative and groundbreaking solutions to the exhibition market. Christie’s latest developments in cinema-specific line array surround speaker technology meet the requirements and performance we strive for in Dolby Atmos auditoriums,” said Stuart Bowling, director, market development, Dolby Laboratories.

“We are excited to expand Dolby Atmos to our Buena Park location. The addition of an integrated Christie Vive Audio solution, combined with the power of Dolby Atmos, ensures a potent combination of sight and sound that will ensure the highest quality movie-going experience for our guests,” said Todd Cummings, vice president of operations, Krikorian Premiere Theatres. “We were one of the first major exhibitors to offer all-digital screens, and now we are the first to deliver the unrivaled combination of Christie Vive Audio and Dolby Atmos.”

“As the creative community expands the envelope in delivering audiences the most realistic audio experience possible, we’ve developed a series of specific Christie Vive audio products that help exhibitors meet those performance challenges,” said Patrick Artiaga, director, Business Development, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “By introducing Christie ribbon driver technology through a single-enclosure line array speaker design and Class D amplification into a cinema environment, we’ve raised the bar in next-generation audio technology and implementation, giving exhibitors like Krikorian Theatres a true competitive edge.”

Innovative Christie Line Array Surround Speakers Expand Christie Vive Audio Immersive Sound Solution

Christie®, the world’s dominant brand in the digital cinema projection market, takes cinema audio to the next level of realism with the introduction of the Christie LA3C line array ceiling surround and Christie LA3S line array surround speakers. Another industry first for Christie, the new surround speakers expand the company’s innovative Christie Vive Audio™ cinema sound solution that was announced on July 17. Featuring the pioneering combination of ribbon driver technology and a unique parabolic line array design in a single compact cabinet, the additional speakers deliver exceptionally even coverage throughout the auditorium. As part of the Christie Vive Audio system, they help unleash the potential of the leading immersive audio technologies such as Dolby® Atmos™ and Auro 3D audio formats.

Christie Vive Audio LA3C Speaker

“Immersive audio is the next frontier in digital cinema, allowing the placement of sound anywhere in the theater – even on the ceiling – to perfectly complement the visual elements of the movie in a powerful and dynamic, lifelike way that is unrivaled for its realism,” noted Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “Christie Vive Audio has set the new standard in immersive cinema sound by combining all the benefits of ribbon driver technology in a line array configuration with Class D amplification and putting it all into a cinema environment, while also meeting the performance demands of the DCI specification. With this announcement, we’re expanding our product line with surround speakers that produce unprecedented uniformity of sound throughout the entire audience listening area, without compromising on quality.”

The Christie LA3C line array ceiling surround speaker and Christie LA3S line array surround speakers are premium solutions that also meet Christie’s goal of providing exhibitors with the highest quality cinema system at an attainable price point. Recognized for their exceptional timbre-matching, enhanced voice intelligibility and low distortion, the speakers’ unique parabolic, line array design increases the optimal listening area up to four times that of the standard point source systems. The extremely low mass of the ribbon drivers allows them to respond very quickly to audio signals and eliminates the effects of high frequency breakup and power compression, resulting in the reproduction of the source material with exceptional clarity and accuracy.

“The Christie LA3C and Christie LA3S surround speakers feature dramatically higher RMS to peak max SPL ratio than traditional, compression driver systems. This means that powerful, sudden bursts of sounds, such as explosions, pop through quickly and flawlessly, without the lag that can detract from the purity of the experience,” said Jim Hall, senior product manager, Entertainment Solutions, Christie.

“There is nothing like them in the cinema environment today for immersive auditoriums,” said Patrick Artiaga, director, Business Development, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “The speakers’ unique parabolic line array design ensures a wide, even dispersion of the sound throughout the entire auditorium, so ‘every seat is a good seat.’ As part of the Christie Vive Audio system, they can be easily integrated into any existing or new theater auditorium for a premium immersive listening experience that makes exhibitors stand out from their competition.”

Christie Vive Audio LA3S Speaker

The complete Christie Vive Audio solution includes ceiling surrounds, wall surrounds, screen channel speakers, subwoofers, and Class D amplifiers. The system is ideal for traditional and premium large-format auditoriums, as well as postproduction studios and screening rooms.

Broadcast Mixing Abilities Enhanced With HARMAN AKG DMM12 BC

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – Highlighting its line of digital mixing units in the DMM series, HARMAN’s AKG will be showcasing its DMM12 BC during IBC. The 12-input mixer’s highly sophisticated algorithm offers a high signal-to-noise ratio to minimize the number of open microphones in a mix and offers the ability to create a different mix per each output. The DMM12 BC unit is scalable up to 10 units and each unit’s inputs are individually routable to numerous outputs – two stereo line outs, one stereo record output and an AES-EBU output. The professional-grade unit offers numerous DSP functions included in the 19-inch, 1HU device.

Managing level, bass, low cut, limiter, compressor, auto-mixing, priority, pam/balance, routing to receiver, routing to output 1, routing to output 2 and delay adjustments can be made quickly with the intuitive, easy-to-use interface.

“A broadcast facility with DMM12 BC allows engineers to have better control of the digital audio functions, but with a more “analog” feel to the unit,” stated Kent Iverson, Director of Marketing and Product Development, AKG. “The DMM series will be a substantial addition to any broadcast or backroom installed sound rig as its quality, reliability and user-friendliness meet the needs of the mixing professional on numerous levels.”

When in use, all inputs are active, but attenuated to a level that equals the level of one “active microphone.” If one or more inputs receive relevant input signals, their amplification is increased to a level, which allows overall output to equal one “active microphone,” resulting in an absolute feedback-stable system.

Working to deter noise pickup, the DMM series senses numerous sonic activities to monitor and diminish unwanted sound. If a signal is picked up over a long period of time, the mixers understand that it may be an air conditioning unit or other unavoidable noise. When a large number of microphones pick up the same signal and all mics are active, the DMM system will recognize applause and not react. When two microphones are receiving the same signal, the mic with the slightly higher level gets priority, while the other one is attenuated.

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of infotainment and audio solutions for the automotive, consumer, and professional markets. It is a recognized world leader across its customer segments with premium brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon®, and Mark Levinson® and leading-edge connectivity, safety and audio technologies. The company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 14,000 people across the Americas, Europe, and Asia and reported sales of $4.3 billion for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013.

General Cable Unveils Latest Gepco® Brand Innovations in Hybrid Fiber Cabling and Accessories at IBC 2013

WOOD DALE, IL, SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 — General Cable (IBC Stand 11.G61) will unveil its breakthrough Gepco® Brand HDC720HD 7.2 mm Hybrid Fiber Cable and new Gepco® Brand SMPTE-304TS Hybrid Fiber Cable Tester at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam September 13-17, 2013.

A leap forward in hybrid fiber cabling for mobile and permanent install SMPTE applications, the new Gepco® Brand HDC720HD 7.2 mm Hybrid Fiber Cable is the first piece of a patent-pending hybrid fiber system that solves the most common durability issues associated with SMPTE camera cables in a smaller, lightweight design.

The revolutionary construction of the HDC720HD starts with eliminating the typical heavy steel strength member, which often contributes to premature cable failure due to different expansion and contraction rates of the individual elements within the SMPTE hybrid fiber cable during temperature extremes. In the HDC720HD, the steel is replaced by a strength member that has the same pull strength of steel, but is lighter and more flexible. Unlike steel, this strength member expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass members. Using this new strength member in place of steel also means the cable has virtually no memory, making the cable easier to pay off, lay flat and wind back up on the drum.

For further durability, the HDC720HD utilizes bend-insensitive fiber elements with very low attenuation and a bend radius of 0.2 mm—versus 2.0 mm for traditional single-mode fiber—in a breakout style with additional Kevlar protection around the individual fibers.

In the HDC720HD, the typical outer braid is replaced with two 18 AWG drain wires that allow the cable to be more flexible, lighter and smaller in diameter. The master jacket of HDC720HD is polyurethane which is tougher than PVC for rugged outdoor use, and its glossy finish reduces the pickup of dirt and debris from outside applications making it easier to keep clean.

With a 31 percent smaller diameter and a 40 percent weight savings over 9.2 mm cables, HDC720HD allows 300 meters of cable on a drum in the same space and less weight than 200 meters of 9.2 mm cable occupies.

“The new HDC720HD cable fixes so many of the common issues with SMPTE hybrid fiber camera cables with the added bonus of being smaller and lightweight,” said Joe Zajac, Sales and Applications Engineer for Gepco® Brand Products. “This makes the HDC720HD extremely ideal for use in portable applications and with high-definition Steadicams.”

Also debuting at IBC, the Gepco® Brand SMPTE-304TS Hybrid Fiber Cable Tester is ideal for use in sports/events broadcasting, fixed and mobile facilities or wherever a SMPTE HD camera cable is used. The SMPTE-304TS tests both electrical and optical circuits while the intuitive display graphically depicts which contact is defective or pinned out incorrectly.

Compatible with all SMPTE 304 standard connectors, the SMPTE-304TS has a portable, hand-held design and provides over 40 hours of continuous use without recharging, while the diagnostic OLED backlit display can be easily seen in direct sunlight or at night. Each SMPTE-304TS test set includes a metering unit and optical source unit with black aluminum frames, a rechargeable NiMH battery with charger, a USB to USB-mini charging cable and a rugged ABS plastic carrying case.
