Game Audio to Be Highlighted at 135th Audio Engineering Society Convention

— Game Audio Track events at the 135th AES Convention will look at key topics in this fast-growing sector of pro audio, including tools and techniques for immersive audio environments, sound effects, 3D sound, audio for mobile gaming and much more —

— Track Co-Chairs Michael Kelly and Steve Martz have assembled a series of sessions that focus on key changes in the gaming industry in the last year, such as the introduction of new and more complex consoles and the shift to an online gaming environment —

New York, NY, September 10, 2013 — The 135th Audio Engineering Society Convention (Thursday, October 17, through Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the Javits Center in New York City) will feature a comprehensive Game Audio Track, focusing on audio trends and issues in the gaming industry. As the track’s co-chairs, industry veterans Michael Kelly and Steve Martz have assembled a compelling and highly inclusive series of panels, sessions and presentations that address the many dimensions of this complex sector of professional audio. These include multichannel game audio, 3D sound, sound effects, immersive game sound, the emotional components of game audio, and other key points of topic.

As any gamer or developer knows, gaming is growing in diversity, as the industry moves further into an online model and the ways that consumers can access games continue to expand. Throughout this revolutionary period of change, audio will continue to be of fundamental importance to the gaming experience, and the Game Audio Track at the AES Show will keep those involved in the industry at the top of their game.

“This year’s Game Audio Track is going to be particularly fascinating, because of several key changes in the gaming industry,” observes Michael Kelly, who in addition to co-chairing the Game Audio Track is also Director, Research and Development, for DTS and Chair of the AES’s Technical Committee on Audio for Games. Kelly, who has co-chaired the technical committee since 2004 with Steve Martz and jointly organized the convention activity since then, points out, “The games track at U.S. AES conventions has grown into a major event. This is the first time we’ve officially shared the chair for the games track, in order to keep on top of the planning. Undoubtedly, the biggest change in the larger industry this year will be the launch of new gaming consoles. That’s always an exciting event for any games track, and a lot of our events will be covering that. In particular, we have leaders from both Sony and Microsoft looking at where sound in games is going in the future. We’ve also got a strong focus on mobile and web-based gaming to reflect the significance of that sector of the games industry.”

Kelly is excited for several of the topics on the program for the Game Audio Track this year. “I’m really looking forward to the Planes, Trains and Automobiles session with Mike Caviezel,” he says. “That was a real hit in Europe. We try not to repeat sessions, but that was one we just had to bring over for the U.S. audience. The In the Trenches session promises to be good too; it’s always great to get to deeper issues, and that’s something that we have the opportunity to do really well at AES events. I think the loudness session is also something worth seeing. After years of sessions in this area, we could be close to something that works practically for the industry. With an added sprinkling of sessions about specific games, it’s looking like an exciting line-up this year!” For a full roster of AES Game Audio Track presentations, please visit http://www.aes.org/events/135/gameaudio/.

The ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition was one of the most successful and technically complex shows at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. Opening to rave reviews on 23 March 2013 it was the best selling exhibition in the museum’s history. ‘David Bowie is’ is now on world tour starting at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada in September 2013.

Design and production company, 59 Productions and interiors and exhibition designers Real Studios collaborated on the ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition design. Expert systems integrator, Sysco AV configured the Museum’s existing inventory of technology and Dataton WATCHOUT™ powered the multi-image display and presentation software in two areas of the galleries including a 7-meter high video wall display and TV displays throughout the exhibition. Sysco AV has worked with the V&A for many years on several exhibitions. WATCHOUT is supported by Mirage Associates, Dataton Premium Partner, UK & Ireland.

“The 7-meter high floor to ceiling video wall used WATCHOUT to blend images from projectiondesign® F32 projectors,” said Hugo Roche, CEO at Sysco.

“Video projections were juxtaposed with mannequins dressed in legendary costumes from the David Bowie Archive and showed footage of Bowie’s live stage performances, recreating the sensational impact of the musician throughout his career,” adds Roche.

“WATCHOUT was also used to show various performances of Bowie’s 1977 song “Heroes” in retrofitted displays.”

Lars Sandlund, chief operating officer at Dataton said: “David Bowie is one of the most iconic musicians and creative people of our time and we’re delighted that Dataton WATCHOUT was used along with the 300 objects from the David Bowie Archive to tell the story of Bowie’s career and engage, enthral and entertain the Museum visitors.”

HARMAN’s BSS Audio and JBL Blow Into Action for Australian Hurricanes Grill Restaurant

SYDNEY, Australia – Looking to provide a comprehensive audio solution with the necessary power and flexibility for a full-service restaurant, systems integrator Constant Technology Pty Ltd. recommended an all-HARMAN solution for Australian’s latest Hurricanes Grill location. Local HARMAN distributor, Jands, provided all the components utilized in the installation. Considered the company’s flagship restaurant, Hurricanes Grill Brighton Le Sands is an expansive venue, which features waterfront views overlooking a nearby beach.

The system had to be high-performance yet cost-effective. It was also essential the speakers would not be visible while still delivering quality sound and distribution throughout the restaurant. According to Con Constantinou, Managing Director, Constant Technology Pty Ltd., the client, Steve Sidd, was concerned a JBL and BSS Audio solution would not be within his budget. “Once we presented the quote to the client he was really surprised at how cost-effective the solution was,” explained Constantinou.

The venue consists of six audio zones that are powered by a range of Crown amplifiers. Six black JBL Control 47LP ceiling speakers cover the entry zone and four ceiling mounted JBL Control 52 speakers cover the main bar zone. Seven JBL Control 47LP ceiling speakers and a pair of JBL Control 40CS/T ceiling subwoofers cover the dining area. Six JBL Control 25AV Surface mount speakers, filled out with stainless steal grilles that provide an IP5 weather rating, cover the verandah zone.

“It sounds great and the sound distribution works really well,” commented Constantinou. “Our client was initially surprised by the amount of speakers we wanted to install but it was necessary to ensure there were no dead spots.”

In addition, the Tapas zone has two JBL Control 47LP ceiling speakers, two JBL Control 25AV surface mount speakers and a JBL Control 40CS/T ceiling subwoofer. A pair of JBL 8128 ceiling speakers cover the bathroom zone.

The system is controlled by a BSS BLU-100 networked signal processor. To eliminate the need for BSS wall controllers, the BSS software was customized and loaded onto the venue’s computers.

“We loaded a custom interface onto their PC’s so that they can control all the zones, inputs and volume from every point of sale terminal and managers PC,” said Constantinou.

“The client trusted us and is very happy with the sound distribution in his venue and the functionality of the BSS,” explained Constantinou.

Main Light Expands Its Extensive Clay Paky Rental Inventory with New Shotlight Wash Fixtures

Main Light Industries, Inc., the Wilmington, Delaware-based firm, which has become one of the largest rental houses in the country, has further expanded its inventory with Clay Paky Shotlight Wash fixtures. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of Clay Paky lighting in North America.

In the last two years Main Light, which serves all of the professional lighting industry, has acquired complements of Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s, Alpha Profile 800 STs, Sharpys, Alpha 700s and Alpha Spot HPE 1500 fixtures. Now, Main Light has continued to diversify its impressive Clay Paky offerings by investing in Shotlight Washes.

“A.C.T Lighting provides some of the best support within the industry. Our longstanding relationship with A.C.T, along with the superb products they distribute for Clay Paky, make our latest purchase a win-win situation for us,” says Main Light’s head of client relations, John DiEleuterio.

Shotlight Wash is a totally new kind of projector that combines an extraordinary 1500W discharge lamp washlight and a 3000W Xenon lamp strobe in one device. The two-wash/strobe functions are perfectly integrated and can be operator controlled with either simultaneous or separate operation and special effects. The “strobe” function is provided by two semicircular Xenon lamps working independently, so they can flash together or separately at different frequencies.

“The Shotlight is very unique combining the wash and strobe elements in one fixture,” DiEleuterio explains. “The dual use of a wash fixture plus two insanely bright strobes give the fixture twice the functionality – something you don’t see in any other fixture. And they’re Clay Paky, which means they’re high quality.”

He notes that Main Light also saw a market opportunity to get out in front of other rental houses with the desirable new fixture. “Our clients will use them as very specific design elements. They will be perfect for certain artists and electronic music.”

Over the years, Main Light customers, including the Red Hot Chile Peppers, the Ultra Music Festival and the Electric Daisy Carnival, have become fans of the company’s extensive Clay Paky inventory.

Media Group International Installs VidiGo’s Visual Radio Solution at Clouds FM

Leading Media Systems Integrator Media Group International has assisted Tanzania’s Clouds FM radio station to give its audience a totally new, interactive experience by installing VidiGo Visual Radio software. The new software will go live on air at Clouds FM within the next few weeks.

The Clouds FM project is the first major radio installation MGI and VidiGo have completed in Africa since meeting at CABSAT 2012 and subsequently forging a partnership. The two companies are now working together to give MGI’s television and radio customers much greater access to VidiGo’s revolutionary range of broadcast software products.
VidiGo Visual Radio was the ideal solution for Clouds FM, one of four stations operated by Tanzania’s Clouds Media Group. Affectionately referred to as The People’s Station, Clouds FM is annually rated the number one station in Tanzania for the youth segment.

MGI’s Sales Director Paul Wallis, who brokered the Clouds FM deal in conjunction with Sales Assistant Diana Velikova, says: “Thanks to its strong reputation for delivering trendsetting programming, dynamic presenters and innovative promotions, Clouds FM is widely regarded as the ‘coolest’ radio station in Tanzania by the country’s 18 to 35 year olds. Given this demographic, the station wanted to incorporate interactive graphics that could be overlaid onto the video feed of its radio broadcasts and used to enhance its internet presence and Twitter, RSS and social media feeds. Diana and I felt that VidiGo Visual Radio was ideal for Clouds FM because it will be able to deliver all the elements station staff need in a very simple to use and intuitive package.”

VidiGo Virtual Radio combines the strength of VidiGo Live and VidiGo Audio Director. VidiGo Live is a full blown software solution for multi-camera TV production. The VidiGo Audio Director is an intelligent extension to VidiGo Live that makes automatic decisions by analyzing audio signals with its advanced algorithms, allowing it to make decisions like a real television director. Finally, the graphics and text overlays are automatically inserted within VidiGo Live, which makes it possible to superimpose content in a live situation using a station’s own designed Flash application.

Joseph Cusago, Managing Director, Clouds Media Group, says: “We are really thrilled with the workflow VidiGo Virtual Radio has provided and our audiences will love the fact that we will soon offer an interactive visual radio experience via the internet and social media feeds. The system is incredibly easy to operate and, because the cameras are switched automatically on the basis of which microphone input is being used, there is very little for our presenters to do. This means they can concentrate on the job of presenting, leaving VidiGo’s clever software to take care of everything else.”

VidiGo CCO Reinout Lempers adds: “With VidiGo’s background in radio, we understand the culture and needs of a radio station. We knew from the start that we shouldn’t bother radio presenters with creating video. That’s why we developed an automated software workflow that is fully compatible with existing radio workflows. With our solution presenters to do what they are good at, which is making radio, while VidiGo’s automated workflow creates an entire TV show, just like a real director would.”

Calrec Audio Announces Callisto, an Elegant New Broadcast Console

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — Sept. 9, 2013 — At IBC2013 (stand 8.C58) Calrec launches Callisto, a brand new audio console for live broadcasters. Callisto is designed for broadcast professionals who need to produce creative and engrossing broadcast audio easily, but may not require as many resources as the company’s Apollo and Artemis consoles.

“We’ve designed Callisto to keep the user interface simple and straightforward,” said Henry Goodman, Calrec’s head of sales. “Throughout the design process, we’ve kept the focus not just on features and capabilities, but on the totality of the user experience. The result is the elegant console we’re introducing this week at IBC.”

Callisto’s mechanical design is refined, with a lean construction that keeps components and materials to a minimum. Disciplined power distribution means the console is around 30 percent more efficient than a comparable Artemis Light, Callisto’s closest stable mate. Service access is from the front of the console, and the entire control surface can be replaced by removing just 12 screws.

When designing the new console, Calrec focused on ensuring that Callisto’s highly intuitive GUI would be suitable for a broad range of operator levels. Users control the console via a 17-inch multitouch screen inspired by familiar tablet technology, with a straightforward interface that uses established finger gestures to navigate the system. The crisp, high-resolution display provides elegant controls and clear presentation of information.

Designed for live broadcast applications and with a focus on intuitive operation, Callisto simplifies even complex workflow tasks, such as creating mix-minus feeds, with common procedures that are just one tap away.

Callisto’s other large displays are fully configurable to display bus, output, and loudness meters, and feature dedicated metering, routing, and processing information per fader.

The physical control surface is available in fixed 32- and 44-fader configurations with a new streamlined layout. Each channel strip has only the most essential mechanical controls, featuring a fader, two flexible control cells, and a dedicated gain pot.

Callisto uses Calrec’s award-winning Bluefin2 technology at its core, and the same integral 8192 x 8192 Hydra2 router as the Apollo and Artemis consoles. Bluefin2 and Hydra2 technologies are in use 24 hours a day at hundreds of facilities across the globe, and are still the most advanced audio processing technologies available.

Bluefin2 provides Callisto with a pool of 180 channel processing paths, which can be assigned as mono, stereo, or 5.1 channels. As with all Calrec consoles, there is no resource-sharing across the DSP, so all facilities are available on all channels at all times. Callisto has eight groups, four mains (all of which can be mono, stereo, or 5.1), 16 auxes, and 32 tracks.
