Bexel to Showcase Robust 4K Portfolio at Cine Gear Expo New York

Company’s East Coast Presence Continues to Grow with New Secaucus Facility

(SECAUCUS, NJ) Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, will be highlighting their growing inventory of 4K camera systems at Cine Gear Expo New York, which runs September 27-28 at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Pavilion. The company recently increased its East Coast presence by opening a new 20,000-square-foot facility in Secaucus, New Jersey, to support broadcast productions with a broad depth of solutions.

At Cine Gear Expo, Bexel will be showcasing the 4K Sony PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 with Fujinon Cabrio PL-mount lenses, as well as the Canon EOS C300, among other offerings.

“We are committed to investing in the advancing camera and lens technology that broadcasters need, and provide the expertise and equipment choices that satisfy a variety of shooters integrating HD video and cinema-style options,” says Tom Dickinson, CTO of Bexel. “To do that, we are broadening our PL-mount inventory. The Sony F55 and F5 are giving our clients great shots that look like film, and the ability to be more creative, particularly when paired with the Fujinon Cabrio PL lenses. We also have a whole range of customers benefitting from the flexibility and affordability that the EF-mount Canon EOS C300s offer in augmenting a variety of video productions.”

Cine Gear Expo New York also gives Bexel the opportunity to introduce its New Jersey hub, and make the broadcast community aware of the company’s increased services, as well as the vast inventory that Bexel now has available on both coasts.

The new Secaucus facility marks a significant expansion for the company. The large, modern space located near the Newark International Airport offers robust systems for rental or purchase, regional engineering support, large staging areas and loading docks, and warehouse-sized storage.

Bexel’s New Jersey team recently supported the broadcasts for the entire run of the 2013 US Open, one of the longer sporting events on the company’s roster, and is currently preparing for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

“Secaucus is a convenient and familiar spot, and we secured a beautiful space that will help us serve our customers better,” adds Dickinson. “The new facility nearly triples the size of the former Manhattan Bexel operation.”

In addition to the Secaucus location, Bexel hubs are set up in Dallas, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, complemented by regional sales offices in Atlanta and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Vaddio Helps Citizens in Faroe Islands Participate in Local Government

In the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly halfway between Norway and Iceland, lies the Faroe Islands. Comprised of about 18 rugged, rocky islands the Faroes occupy only about 540 square miles of land mass, with a total population hovering around 50,000 people. But if idylls of a simple people removed from modern technology spring to mind, you can banish that thought. In fact, one small community in the Faroe Islands recently deployed a high-tech solution using Vaddio products to get its citizens more involved in local governance.

The municipality of Sunda (known locally as Sunda kommuna) stretches across two of the larger Faroe Islands and includes about a dozen small communities. When it came to municipal matters, the city council of Sunda faced a challenge: Getting citizens scattered across a wide area to attend the meetings. To solve this problem, the council decided to take their meetings to the public by live-streaming the events on the web.

“In the past, city council meeting minutes were published after-the-fact,” said integrator Alvin Ellebye Andersen of Raclip, who worked with Sunda to create its live-streaming system. “The new method allows residents to follow along with the meeting as it happens. Although they can’t interact, they have real-time access to decision-making and community business.”

VADDIO COMPONENTS MAKE STREAMING EASY
Because Raclip is, itself, located in the Faroe Islands, Andersen had a keen understanding of the obstacles Sunda kommuna needed to overcome. The live-streaming system had to be easy to use and not require a dedicated operator. It also had to be cost-effective. After evaluating other systems, Andersen knew an all-Vaddio system would deliver a great solution.

“The Vaddio components we installed really are the best thing for this type of situation,” Andersen said. “You just turn it on, and it works. Simple.”

The Sunda kommuna system consists of a single Vaddio HD-19 camera, two microphones, a Vaddio AutoPresenter, and Vaddio AV bridge. As a city council meeting gets underway, the mayor simply turns on the equipment and the event is live-streamed instantly. It quite literally is that simple.

“Other systems we looked at required a person to sit at the controller and operate the equipment,” Andersen said. “That wouldn’t have worked for this application, not to mention some of those systems were much more expensive than the Vaddio set-up.”

BEAUTIFUL PRESENTATIONS ON A BUDGET
Any type of live-streaming setup with a high-definition pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) camera isn’t going to be cheap. But Andersen was able to keep costs contained for Sunda by sourcing all the components from the same manufacturer. Plus, the seamless integration of the Vaddio products drives the system’s ease of use.

The Vaddio AutoPresenter interfaces with the HD-19 PTZ camera mounted in the city council’s meeting room. Originally designed for classroom use, the AutoPresenter is the perfect solution for live-streaming any type of similar meeting, as in Sunda kommuna’s case. While the Sunda city council currently uses only the camera for broadcasting their events, in the future they could easily incorporate the presentation of other materials, such as PowerPoint slideshow, which is what the Vaddio AutoPresenter was designed to do. By harnessing this capability, the Sunda council could, for example, display a proposed budget using a picture-in-picture format while the city treasurer explained to viewers what each line item meant.

EASY STREAMING WITH THE SOFTWARE OF YOUR CHOICE
Another key component in the Sunda kommuna live-streaming setup is the Vaddio AV Bridge. This little box offers supreme flexibility in the choice of streaming platform. The AV Bridge functions as a digital gateway that connects the audio and video sources to the streaming software, be it Skype, Cisco Jabber, Microsoft Lync — or any application that supports USB 2.0 devices.

“We just input the camera and microphone sources to the AV Bridge, and the city council can live-stream on any platform they desire,” Andersen said. “Again, we wanted to make this as easy as possible for them.”

Importantly, the AV Bridge also records the meeting for archival purposes. Instead of relying on a set of written minutes that could be incomplete or even contain innocently introduced errors, the Sunda kommuna city council can review the video archives of meetings to discern precisely what was said, done or decided.

A WELL-RECEIVED SOLUTION
What do Sunda’s citizens think about their community going high-tech?

“So far, they’re pretty happy with it,” Andersen said of the system, which was installed in March 2013. “Other Faroe Islands cities are watching how things go in Sunda and are checking out how this could work for them.”

Although the meeting archives currently aren’t publicly available, the ability of a citizen to “sit in” on a live event occurring on another island offers great convenience to those who want to stay current with what the city council is doing. Ultimately, the system should stimulate more public input and involvement with local government, and that’s a big win for Sunda.

Nexidia Wins Two IABM Design & Innovation Awards at IBC2013

ATLANTA — Sept. 23, 2013 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced it has won an IABM Design & Innovation Award for two of its products — Nexidia Dialogue Search and Nexidia QC(TM). Nexidia Dialogue Search is able to search for any spoken word or phrase across massive media libraries in seconds, and Nexidia QC is a software tool for enabling automated closed caption, video description, and language verification for broadcast and IP workflows. Both products are based upon Nexidia’s patented technologies. This is the first time that a single company has won two IABM Design and Innovation Awards.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the IABM with not one but two of these prestigious awards,” said Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s Media and Entertainment division. “For Dialogue Search, we built our patented technology around the spoken word so any organization using media has a better way to search through countless hours of recorded content. In terms of Nexidia QC, the growth of channels, partners, devices, sites, and languages is driving accelerated growth in the volume and complexity of the digital assets that broadcasters must address. Nexidia QC provides a simple, automated, and efficient way to ensure that programming meets quality standards and regulations.”

Nexidia Dialogue Search rapidly searches through media libraries large and small to find any spoken word or phrase in video and audio files in seconds. The patented, phonetic-based technology behind Dialogue Search allows organizations to make better use of their media libraries by quickly and precisely finding unique assets that traditional metadata could never find. Dialogue Search dramatically reduces logging and transcription costs, integrates directly with media asset management and editing applications, and requires no training.

Nexidia QC automates manual processes to reduce operating expenses, automatically identifies errors and fixes issues to avoid fines, and enables a higher-quality experience for all viewers across all platforms. It checks quality automatically at every point in the life of the asset to ensure that the right caption file appears against the right media in the right language, and with the correct caption coverage and timing. QC verifies that video description content was actually aired, which automates verification and logging for legal compliance.

The IABM Design & Innovation Awards recognize products that offer significant solutions or new opportunities to the broadcast supply industry. Each year, an independent panel of industry professionals looks for innovation with real, deliverable benefits to the industry. After a rigorous review process and a demonstration of the shortlisted products during IBC2013, IABM announced the winners at a reception on Sept. 14 after the show closed.

Blaze of Glory: Yamaha CL5 Installed at NEP Studios

NEW YORK—NEP Studios in New York City recently installed a Yamaha CL5 in Studio 47, and TheBlaze has made it their home for production of many of its shows. TheBlaze is a news, opinion and entertainment network dedicated to delivering high quality programming 24/7. TheBlaze is available on over 25 television providers including DISH and Optimum TV. TheBlaze is also available as an online video streaming network.

The Yamaha CL is currently being used for production of Real News, Wilkow!, Liberty Treehouse and The B.S. of A. The exclusive provider of Glenn Beck’s daily television broadcast, TheBlaze offers a full slate of thought-provoking original news and opinion shows, enlightening documentaries and original specials.

The Yamaha CL5 in NEP 47 is equipped with four Rio 3224-D input/output boxes. “I had exhausted the analog console’s I/O,” states John Ariz, broadcast audio mixer for TheBlaze TV. “NEP and TheBlaze agreed to upgrade the studio and loved the cost-for-power ratio of the CL5. Having prior experience on Yamaha PM5D, LS9, and M7CL consoles, I could tell Yamaha had really listened to their user’s feedback and incorporated some of the best features in this model.”

Ariz cites features like the Dante Network’s ease of use, the console’s 24 mix busses, the ability to choose the direct outs and insert points, and its preamps. “The console sounds great. Lots of clean headroom, very dynamic and the new premium effects are exciting,” says Ariz.

“We had been looking for a digital console to replace the current analog console, and was pleased that Yamaha was able to provide an on-site demo of the CL5 and DANTE IO for our engineers and management,” adds Alex Joyce, Tech Manager for TheBlaze. “After the decision was made, NEP’s talented engineers pre-wired all patch bays and remote IO during our normal production schedule to allow for the installation of the CL5 over a three-day weekend, replacing the current analog console. We were under a very tight deadline to resume full production, and Yamaha provided an experienced technical rep on the launch day to ensure it was a success. We are very pleased with the Dugan-MY16 card option, as this feature greatly improves the intelligibility of our productions. Our staff and freelance audio engineers have been quite happy with the ease of operation and robust features of the CL5.”

Because the D-Tools Hosted Solution is powered by Amazon Web Services™, it features the highest possible level of scalability, security and performance. Not only does the pre-configured firewall only allow traffic from the D-Tools application, it can only be accessed from ports 9010, 1433 and 1434. For added security, the connection to those ports can be tied to a specific IP address, enabling only the computers registered on the user’s network to connect to the associated cloud server. For ease of implementation, the D-Tools technical support team performs the installation and setup for each user.

“The D-Tools Hosted Solution is ideally suited to companies that are just getting started or those who are migrating to a service-based model for their IT infrastructure because it offers users a flexible choice of deployment and the ability to migrate to an on-premise solution over time as their needs change,” said Adam Stone, President and Founder of D-Tools. “Not only does it (the D-Tools Hosted Solution) offer users cloud-hosted access to the D-Tools SIX 2013 server, it also provides a connection to the D-Tools SIX 2013 Client without a VPN or expensive standalone servers.”

The D-Tools Hosted Solution is available now and can be secured through a monthly hosting program that starts at $149 per month. A one-time setup fee will be charged in addition to the monthly fee.
