PESA Xstream Delivers Multi-Path IP Streaming at CCW

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based custom design and manufacturing company for professional audio and video signal distribution, will demonstrate its new PESA Xstream multi-path IP streaming appliance at Content & Communications World (Booth 718) on Nov. 13-14, 2013, at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. The company will also showcase its new 4K routing switcher and advanced PERC3000 server-based system controller.

Housed in a compact, 1 RU form factor, PESA Xstream provides a cost effective, comprehensive package for digital media capture, processing, distribution, and storage. It simultaneously encodes up to five independent video sources and eight audio sources concurrently from live or recorded video for multi-path H.264 IP distribution over six independent video streams – with no sync or latency issues. Upgrades for Q1 2014 include on-board storage as well as a USB 2.0 communications interface.

PESA Xstream captures H.264 IP camera streams, NTSC/PAL or SDI video up to 1080p resolution, stored video content, and even computer-based content such as PowerPoint slides or medical patient vital signs, then prepares high-bandwidth MPEG-4/H.264 broadcast streams for enterprise distribution and archive. When multiple sources are captured simultaneously, the streams remain associated and synchronized during the event.

“Because it delivers high-quality video and audio with synchronization at a low cost per stream, PESA Xstream has caught the attention of customers and integrators from a number of vertical markets,” said John Wright, PESA senior vice president, sales and business development. “We are working with developers who are tailoring the user experience for specific applications in medicine, sports, government, education, and more.”

PESA Xstream has already been incorporated into VIQ Infinit, a digital media capture and management platform developed by VIQ Solutions that provides a large-scale digital media capture and management platform for international, federal, or state courts. It is also being used to record multi-camera coverage for various medical applications, and new solutions are being developed for collegiate athletics, live entertainment, and educational systems.

With five individually addressable video outputs as well as an integrated quad-view output, PESA Xstream allows operators to stream live content over IP while simultaneously transmitting live digital content to a quad-view display and/or full screen display. PESA Xstream can also synchronize discrete audio inputs to discrete video inputs, and offers adjustable audio delay. An intuitive Web browser management and control interface provides complete remote capabilities, which can eliminate the need for on-site personnel to stream content to a production facility.

PESA will also show its server-based PERC3000 system controller, which supports up to 17 levels of control, 64 components, 256 tie-line interconnects, 256 salvos, and 8,192 sources and destination names. With its icon-based status interface, it is easy to check matrix status, tie-lines, presets, salvo, communications, and more. It also offers full diagnostic capabilities to verify operation of the matrix control to the physical cross-point. The PERC3000 supports network, Web-based browsers, and popular mobile applications. It provides a standard platform that can be easily scaled in the future as system performance demands and complexities increase. The system controller works in conjunction with PESA’s TOUCH 72 remote control panel, which features 72 LCD pushbuttons and a 320×240 touch-screen display.

Designed to support 4K/UHDTV workflows, the new Cheetah 4K 16×16 routing switcher provides all the necessary control elements in its 4 RU frame. With hot swappable matrix and I/O cards, as well as internal power and control, the need for additional power and external cabling is virtually eliminated. Plus, redundant power and control modules can be added without using additional rack space.

Based on real-time multi-link SDI transmission methods, each Cheetah I/O card includes four SC-style fiber CWDM connections carrying up to 12 Gbps (4xSDI) for each input or output port. To complete the end-to-end 4K system, an outboard easyPORT module converts the signals from each CWDM port on the router back to conventional HD/3G-SDI video lines. With the built-in crosspoint switch circuit on each easyPORT module, users can also send four independent SD/HD/3G-SDI signals over a single wire interface, which saves valuable cabling space, and can extend coax I/O more than 260 feet using the built-in equalizing and reclocking circuits in each easyPORT module.

The Cheetah 4K 16×16 is controlled through traditional RS-232/422 or Ethernet connections, and its built-in SNMP MIB simplifies integration to third-party network system management software. The router can be configured and controlled via PESA’s intuitive Cattrax network GUI or optional Cattrax Web network server software using PESA’s powerful PERC2000 or PERC3000 system controller hardware.

Belkin Receives EAL 4+ Certification for DVI-I KVM and Secure KM Product Portfolio

Belkin’s Award-Winning KVM Switches Receive Common Criteria Certificate, Providing Government Buyers with Assurance Based on Stringent Computer Security Requirements

PLAYA VISTA, CA – Belkin, a trusted leader of technology solutions for office, classroom, IT infrastructure, and mobile environments, today announced that the company has received Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ certification for its DVI-I KVM and Secure KM products. Designed to meet the strict requirements of government agencies, the keyboard/video/mouse switches feature the award-winning secure technology of true data path isolation between systems and networks, the hallmark of Belkin’s Advanced Secure KVM product family.

Common Criteria lists seven levels, with EAL 1 as the most basic, and EAL 7 the most stringent. Each EAL corresponds to a package of security assurance requirements, which covers the complete development of a product, with a given level of strictness and control. This Common Criteria certification is globally known as the international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for computer security certification.

In the U.S., the highest level achievable for Secure KVM is EAL 2. However, Belkin was able to receive certification through Canadian protocol, which tests to EAL 4+. Certification was awarded by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).

The CSEC’s Certification Report stated: “The results documented in the Evaluation Technical Report (ETR) for this product provide sufficient evidence that it meets the EAL 4 augmented assurance requirements for the evaluated security functionality.” The report also noted that by awarding a Common Criteria certificate, the Canadian Common Criteria Evaluation and Certification Scheme (CCS) asserts that the evaluated products comply with the security requirements specified in the associated security target.

“Common Criteria ensures that the process of specification, implementation, and evaluation of a computer security product has been conducted in a rigorous, standard, and repeatable manner,” said Luis Artiz, director of product management, Business Division, Belkin International. “Receiving EAL 4+ certification assures our government buyers that they can continue to place a high level of confidence in Belkin’s KVM security features based on the quality assurance process.”

Belkin’s DVI-I KVM switches provide true data path isolation for government workstations in a highly secure environment. The switches can be used to securely connect peripheral devices, including audio equipment and large high-resolution displays, and to switch quickly among multiple PCs and networks with a single keyboard, monitor, mouse, and common access card reader.

The Secure KM Switch portfolio offers users secure switching between isolated networks with simple mouse pointer movement. The switches feature single, unbuffered, dedicated processors for each peripheral port, which allow analysts to work simultaneously on multiple networks at different security levels.

Masque Sound Helps Audiences Have the Time of their Lives at North American Tour of Smash Hit Musical, MAMMA MIA!

When the 2013/2014 North American touring production of the smash hit musical MAMMA MIA! kicked off at Clemson University’s Brooks Center on September 30th, Associate Sound Designer David Patridge turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to provide a custom audio equipment package to bring Sound Designers Bobby Aitken and Andrew Bruce’s vision to the stage.

Since 1999, the musical MAMMA MIA! has been captivating audiences in London, Toronto, Broadway and all over the world, as it tells the story of the dynamic relationship between a carefree mother and her daughter. The daughter, hoping to build a bond with the father she’s never known, decides to invite him to her upcoming wedding, only to discover that her father could be one of her mother’s three past suitors. A story full of laughs, love and lust, MAMMA MIA! features the hit songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA.

This mark’s Patridge’s 12th MAMMA MIA! production in 14 years, as associate sound designer, and although he is intimately familiar with the show, the 2013/2014 North American tour was not without its obstacles.

“The challenge for this incarnation of the musical was to take the signature MAMMA MIA! sound and put it into a more compact, fast-moving production without cutting the things you need to make the show sound big,” says Patridge. “Just because the show is moving from city to city quickly doesn’t mean the size of the venue is going to be small. It was important that we did not downscale the brand or incur any kind of loss of feel for the amazing show that MAMMA MIA! is. Thanks to the help of the talented professionals at Masque Sound, we didn’t compromise on anything. The show looks and sounds great.”

In order to keep that big sound Patridge was looking for, Masque Sound provided Meyer M’elodie speakers, the largest speakers that could feasibly be put in a tower footprint, yet still fit in all of the smaller theatres on the tour. “We took the footprint that we were allowed based on the technical director’s specs and then we looked at speaker choices,” adds Patridge. “We went with self-powered M’elodie speakers, so we wouldn’t need amplifier racks, which take up extra room in the truck and extra time to connect. We used the M’elodie and Meyer 500HP powered speakers in a tower arrangement, giving us a lot of impact for the size of the footprint. Whether we need to figure out the sizes of trussing needed, engineering concerns, dolly selection, etc., Masque Sound has always been fantastic with figuring out all of the details and on a traveling production that is extremely important.”

In addition to the Meyer M’elodie and 500HP speakers, Patridge also used Meyer 700HP subs, as well as Meyer UPM-1Ps for front fills and under the balconies. Masque Sound provided a DiGiCo SD10 digital console, because the compact size and powerful features of the console make it ideal for a traveling production. In addition, the actors are outfitted with DPA 4060-61 omnidirectional mics. Masque Sound also provided Sennheiser 5212 radios with Sennheiser EM3532 receivers.
“One of the things about Masque Sound that I like is that there is a valuable brain trust of people,” says Patridge. “Professionals like Gary Stocker are not afraid to help partner with us as designers and invent solutions, so I don’t have to be on my own when I’m trying to figure out how to support these speakers and towers, especially on a production that moves from city to city. I know I can ask Gary what we can do to facilitate my vision, and the people at Masque Sound will design and fabricate whatever I need. In addition, Eric Rivera at Masque Sound does an excellent job of coordinating the frequencies from stop to stop. He has the itinerary in hand and is constantly forwarding the list of frequencies to our road personnel. Fortunately, Masque Sound uses all the tools at hand, including FCC charts and intermod study programs, and if there is a problem with anything, I know that they will pick up the phone or answer an email to get us out of a bind.”

Seen by over 54 million people around the world, MAMMA MIA! is celebrating 5,000 performances on Broadway and is the 10th longest running show in Broadway history. The original West End production of MAMMA MIA! is now in its fifteenth year and has celebrated over 6,000 performances in London and the international tour has visited more than 74 foreign cities in 35 countries and been seen by over 4.3 million people. The blockbuster feature film adaptation of MAMMA MIA! is the most successful movie musical of all time grossing $600 million worldwide. Seen in 38 productions in 14 different languages globally and with a worldwide gross of over $2 Billion, MAMMA MIA! is acclaimed by the Associated Press as “quite simply, a phenomenon.”

HARMAN’s JBL and Crown Provide Sound for National Network of Cinemas Project In Mongolia

MONGOLIA — Most audio/video projects involve a single location and anything from a conference room to a domed stadium. That’s a major endeavor by anyone’s standards – but a project that involves equipping an entire country with a network of cinemas? That’s exactly what the Mongolia Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism (MCST) is currently undertaking in conjunction with systems integrator Cinema of Sound LLC and Kinoton Korea, Inc.

In their effort to provide professional high-quality cinemas to Mongolian citizens, Cinema of Sound and Kinoton are building Standard Cinema Point theaters in Mongolia’s aimags (first-level administrative subdivisions), villages and city districts. Twenty installations have been completed to date, spanning across the country’s nearly 604,000 square miles. Audio for all the installations is provided by HARMAN’s JBL JRX125 dual-15-inch loudspeakers and Crown DSi 2000 amplifiers, which are designed specifically for cinema applications.

“Mongolia is a country that has vast areas of scattered settlements and sparse population, so sparse that our country’s most remote citizens watch movies only on television, as there are no theaters,” said Jigjidsuren Khurelbaatar, CEO of Cinema of Sound LLC. “Thanks to our Standard Cinema Point project, which is part of the MCST’s efforts to bring a richer cultural environment to Mongolians, people throughout Mongolia will be able to enjoy a true cinema experience with high-quality sound and projection.”

Cinema of Sound LLC standardized on the JBL JRX125 loudspeakers and Crown DSi 2000 amplifiers for the Standard Cinema Point installations to achieve consistent sound, performance and reliability in every venue. “By standardizing the equipment we’re using, we know we can depend on a high level of audio quality and dependable day-to-day operation no matter where the theaters are located,” Chris Bae, Managing Director of Kinoton Korea, Inc.

The JRX125 incorporates features including dual 15-inch woofers with large 2.5-inch (64mm) edgewound ribbon voice coils, titanium-diaphragm compression high-frequency drivers and high-voltage crossover components to ensure exceptional performance under the most demanding conditions of day-to-day use. Crown’s DSi Series amplifiers are specifically designed to meet the needs of cinema applications and feature onboard digital signal processing including crossovers, EQ filters, delay and output limiting to deliver exceptional sound quality.

Cinema of Sound and Kinoton Korea are contracted to build 50 more Standard Cinema Point theaters in the remainder of 2013, bringing the total of theaters in Mongolia to 70. Theaters are currently installed in capital city Ulaanbaatar and in locations throughout the country.

The downstage front projection screen, measuring 49×20 feet, also utilized Christie 20Ks.

In addition to the projected video elements a small number of Barco C5 LED panels were used in an unusual fashion. Flown on three different line sets between the two projection screens, multiple displays were manually configured several times during the show to create different scenic looks. “They were moved to form one continuous scene or a number of different scenes for the client-created content,” says WorldStage director of events/venues Tony Rossello.

Twelve channels of Dataton WATCHOUT V5 drove video for all the destinations. Switching was facilitated through a single Vista Spyder frame.

“We also supplied a four-camera HD system based on Sony HXC-100 HD cameras for live video,” Rossello says. “We had three cameras at fixed locations and one on a a 20-foot jib.”

“We were able to spend four days on prep, rehearsal and install for the one-day product launch so when it came to show time, all the elements were totally dialed in,” Rossello says.

“I score WorldStage five out of five for its performance,” says an enthusiastic Jay Lee, CEO and executive producer at Studio PAV M&C. “They knew what to bring and what to do. WorldStage’s professional support is well-prepared and organized and made the show brilliant and successful. I was so lucky to have them.”

At WorldStage Armando Acevedo was project manager and Mike Naylor the Spyder programmer.
