IDEAL ACOUSTICAL ENVIRONMENT MEETS 48-CHANNEL API 1608 AT STRANGE WEATHER STUDIOS

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: With an API 1608 console, a jaw-dropping collection of analog equipment, and a straight-up rock ‘n roll recording vibe, Brooklyn’s Strange Weather studio is growing at an incredible rate. A move to a larger space with custom acoustical design by Wes Lachot of Wes Lachot Design is destined to help Strange Weather thrive in the years and decades to come.

In addition to Lachot’s accurate acoustic design and owner Marc Alan Goodman’s ever-growing collection of gear and his valued partner Daniel Schlett, the new space benefits from an expanded API 1608 analog console with 48 fully-automated channels and 24 expansion slots for API 500 Series modules. But beyond the particulars, the studio’s greatest strength derives from the cohesion of its acoustical, electrical, and creative environments.

Lachot takes a broad and balanced perspective to studio design and recognizes that a lot of what makes Strange Weather successful is out of his hands. “The most important component of a successful recording studio is the talent, and Marc is at the hub of a vibrant creative community,” he said. “They have the songs, the instruments, and the performances that have the potential to become enduring recordings. After the talent, the acoustics are most important. That’s coming from an acoustic designer of course, but if the acoustics aren’t there, then the musicians don’t feel right and the performance suffers. The accuracy of the acoustics on both sides of the glass also impact how well a performance is captured and how well it translates. After the acoustics, the console is the next critical component because everything will travel through it multiple times.”

Goodman acquired Strange Weather’s original API 1608 in 2008. “The idea of having something new and reliable with an honest vintage sound was very appealing,” he said. “I love the simplicity of the API 1608. It has eight aux’s, eight busses, and no crazy routing. Unlike everything else that’s being made today, it’s not overbuilt. And of course the sound is very attractive, especially to our mostly rock-based clientele.”

Lachot regularly recommends API consoles to his clients. “Our rooms are very quiet and very accurate,” he said. “When we’re finally done and we fire up the tunes, the quality of the console is obvious. And if the quality of the console isn’t there, it can be a brutal realization. API’s all-discrete analog consoles have a hugeness, clarity, and depth that’s unbeatable. And the people at API are great to work with. They stand behind their products.”

Because the API 1608 is expandable, Goodman was able to grow his console to its current 48 channel form, and even included an additional bucket to accommodate 16 additional 500-Series slots. “If anyone can fill those slots up fast, it’s Marc,” Lachot joked.

ABOUT API (AUTOMATED PROCESSES, INC.) Established more than 40 years ago, Automated Processes, Inc. is the leader in analog recording gear with the Vision, Legacy Series and 1608 recording consoles, as well as its classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

HARMAN’s Martin LEDs Enhance Customer Experience at Iconic BMW World

MUNICH, Germany — As one of Munich’s most popular attractions, BMW World is a unique and extremely important showcase for the premium automaker. Whether visiting BMW World as a tourist or there to pick up a brand new car, BMW World offers an extra-ordinary brand experience to customers. Today, BMW World features an eye-catching HARMAN Martin color illumination on the outside of the building – a dynamic lighting scheme that has now been extended indoors as a daylight solution.

As one of the world’s great luxury automakers, the atmosphere surrounding presentations of the various car models must be perfect, avoiding both shape and color distortion. Therefore, especially high demands are put on the lighting environment. An extremely even daylight illumination is required – a uniform level of light that must be guaranteed no matter the ambient conditions, time of day or time of year.

“The Martin LED fixtures required the ability to show shape and color in the correct way,” stated Florian Felsch, General Manager, Livebau Solutions. “With this LED solution, we have calibrated 5,600-Calvin- color temperature, which is perfect for product presentation. We’ve also lowered the maintenance cost by 90 percent and the return of investment is only 1.5 years on the lighting setup.”

Martin Professional LED-based Exterior 430 luminaires have been installed and produce optimal results, meeting the highest standards and requirements of luminosity and color rendering at BMW World.

Journey Holds Onto That Feeling with HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays

NORTHRIDGE, California – Legendary rock band Journey recently completed a series of concerts with HARMAN’s JBL VTX line arrays, powered by Crown I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers. The VTX system was deployed for five performances, including two with Rascal Flatts (with a system provided by Sound Image) and other dates in Lake Tahoe, Aspen and San Francisco.

According to Jim Yakabuski, Journey’s front of house engineer, the band has few stipulations when it comes to its sound. “Journey is pretty hands-off for the most part,” Yakabuski said, “although they do ask me to keep the low end off the stage, so I try to keep the subwoofers from folding back onto the stage and keep the stage nice and clean.”

Journey’s latest tour started in June 2012, touring with Clair Global and their I5 loudspeaker system. This summer, Journey didn’t carry PA as there were many festivals and “one-off” shows, enabling Yakabuski to listen to the latest and greatest line array technology on the market. “I have to say that loudspeaker technology has really come a long way the past few years,” he said. “The VTX system was definitely one of the best we used this summer and we had five great shows with it. It wasn’t a problem at all keeping the low end off the stage with VTX.”

“The VTX system has a very nice clean and crisp high end,” Yakabuski added. “The whole midrange to high-end seemed really coherent and held together. There was also plenty of power, so we had no problems there.”
According to Yakabuski, a major advantage of VTX is how good it sounds right out of the box. “We used the JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software as well, which allowed us to take the low-end frequency response all the way down in the main V25 loudspeakers,” he said.

All in all, the five shows with the VTX system were a tremendous success. “[Clair System Engineer] David Quigley and I would like to thank [Plus 4 Marketing members] Keith Erickson and Jim Mathews, Alchemy Concert Systems [who provided the audio system in Aspen], as well as [Technical Support Lead, Tour Sound, JBL Professional] George Georgallis. They all put a lot of effort and time into making sure the system was set up properly. It makes it so much easier.”

Zylight F8 LED Fresnel Receives STAR Award from TV Technology Europe at IBC 2013

LOS ANGELES – Zylight, a leading manufacturer of innovative LED lighting solutions, has won a STAR Award from the editorial team of TV Technology Europe for its new F8 LED Fresnel. Ideal for studio or location work, the unique F8 folds flat – collapsing to less than four inches thick – for easy transport and storage.

Designed to celebrate and showcase the preeminent technological innovations available to the broadcast industry, the STAR (Superior Technology Award Recipient) Awards were chosen by TV Technology Europe’s editors and writers and presented at IBC 2013 earlier this month. The F8 was one of only 25 products to earn a STAR Award. The magazine is published by NewBay Media.

“STAR awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way,” said Mark Hallinger, editor, TV Technology Europe. “The products selected help advance the industry – some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products.”

“We want to thank the TV Technology Europe team for honoring our new F8 with a STAR Award,” said Joe Arnao, president. “It’s a better choice than an HMI for run-and-gun ENG shooting, and costs much less to operate than traditional Fresnels in the studio.”

Available in tungsten (3200K) or daylight (5600K) versions, the F8 maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping through an eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens, and offers a patented focusing system for spot and flood operations. With a CRI (color rendering index) up to 97 or better, the fully dimmable F8 offers and adjustable beam spread (16-70 degrees) for even coverage for widescreen productions.

The F8’s LED engine with quantum dot technology provides a cooler, more energy efficient light than traditional Fresnel instruments, but does not compromise performance. While it draws only 100 watts, it has close to the light output of a traditional 1000-watt Fresnel. It is also water resistant (IP54) for use in challenging location conditions, and can be powered by a worldwide AC adapter or standard 14.4V camera battery.

Like other Zylight models, the F8 is also equipped with ZyLink wireless technology, which makes it easy to link multiple Zylights for simultaneous remote control. As a result, several F8s can be grouped together and linked for unique lighting scenarios. The F8 can also be controlled via DMX.

The F8 includes a five-year warranty on the LED engine, and ships with barn doors and yoke mount. Additional accessories are available separately.

MASQUE SOUND CELEBRATES THE MEMORY OF SIX EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG MEN IN BARRY MANILOW’S HARMONY – A NEW MUSICAL

Douglas Williams, Tony Yazbeck, Will Taylor, Chris Dwan, Will Blum, and Shayne Kennon in the Alliance Theatre’s 2013/14 production of Harmony – A New Musical. September 6 – October 6, 2013. Photo by Greg Mooney.

When Tony® award-winner John Shivers, along with David Patridge were personally selected by Barry Manilow and theater veteran Bruce Sussman to create the sound design for the legendary singer’s highly anticipated new musical, Harmony – A New Musical, they turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to provide a custom audio equipment package.

Harmony, which officially opened at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta on September 15, recounts the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, six talented young men who in 1920s Germany took the world by storm with their signature blend of sophisticated close harmonies and uproarious stage antics. The Comedian Harmonists sold millions of records, starred in dozens of films and packed the most prestigious concert halls around the globe until the world they knew forever changed with the commencement of World War II.

Working with Masque Sound for more than 20 years now, Shivers most recently collaborated with the company on the Broadway smash Kinky Boots, for which he won the Tony® award for Best Sound Design of a Musical. “When Barry Manilow was in essence auditioning sound designers for Harmony, he came to see Kinky Boots,” says Shivers. “He liked the sound of the show, and the very next day I received a call from Mr. Manilow asking if I could design the sound for Harmony. Masque Sound did a great job in providing the equipment and technical support for Kinky Boots, so they were my obvious choice for Harmony. I have a great relationship with them; they are wonderful to work with and are always attentive to my needs.”

One of the biggest challenges in the sound design for Harmony was achieving full-scale production sound on a limited-engagement show’s budget. “Whenever you have a very experienced pop star like Barry Manilow personally involved in a show, expectations are very high,” adds Shivers. “Although the show is only scheduled to run for a month, we did not want to compromise the sound in any way because of financial constraints. Through our design, along with Masque Sound’s extensive inventory, we were able to put together a package that ultimately ended up sounding great and made Barry very happy.”

Shivers and Patridge designed an audio equipment package that included a DiGiCo SD10 digital console. The SD10 offers a reasonably large number of inputs and outputs, along with signal routing flexibility. “DiGiCo continues to provide valuable software as an added package to their SD consoles which is designed specifically for the theatrical market,” says Patridge. “The SD10 was provided as an “SD10T” console with this software which allows the desk to operate in a manner very consistent with the needs of musical theatre. Theatre is such a small piece of the audio market and it is great to have vendors like Masque Sound who are willing to make the effort for us.”

In addition, Masque Sound provided a large speaker array of Meyer M’elodies, which Shivers likes because they have excellent clarity and punch in a relatively compact package. Masque Sound also provided Meyer subwoofers and Sennheiser Wireless SK5212s along with frequency coordination.

“Every job and every theater has its unique challenges from a sound design standpoint, whether it be microphone placement on the actors, time constraints, room acoustics, etc.,” adds Shivers. “Masque Sound is not only an equipment provider; their on-site support and troubleshooting is second to none.”

Directed by Drama Desk Award-nominee Tony Speciale (Classic Stage Company’s Unnatural Acts, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Harmony runs through October 6 at the Alliance Theatre and will move to Los Angeles in the spring of 2013.

Wohler and Cinnafilm to Present Technical Paper on Enhanced Image Processing at SMPTE 2013 on Oct. 24

SAN FRANCISCO — Oct. 3, 2013 — Wohler Technologies today announced that Kirk Marple, chief software architect of Wohler’s RadiantGrid(TM), will join Ernie Sanchez, chief operating officer at Cinnafilm, to present their paper, “Enhanced Image Processing Beyond Baseband: CPU/GPU Process Model Unlocks Performance Possibilities,” co-authored by Hank Frecon, technology and partner specialist for file-based products at Wohler, at the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24, at 2:30 p.m. as part of the “Advancements in Image Processing — Part 4″ conference session. SMPTE 2013 will take place Oct. 22-24 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries. SMPTE 2013 is the premier annual event for motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, and the allied arts and sciences. The event draws elite and world-renowned technology thought-leaders from motion picture studios, broadcast and distribution networks, production and postproduction communities, software companies, systems integrators, manufacturers, display technologies, distribution providers, over-the-top providers, and others leading the evolving motion-imaging industry.

The Wohler presentation explores the emerging model for image processing in the file-based domain, made possible by increasingly powerful CPUs and sophisticated GPU-based algorithms.
