Archimedia to Discuss Technical Advances in MXF Implementations at SMPTE 2013

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Oct. 3, 2013 — Archimedia Technology, a new company whose technology and applications bridge the gap between content producers and their archives without loss of quality, today announced that Chief Marketing Officer Josef Marc and Chief Technology Officer Chi-Long Tsang will present a paper at the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, the premier annual event for motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, and the allied arts and sciences. The 30-minute presentation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at noon and is based the paper “Archives — It’s a retrieval problem, not a storage problem.”

Marc, Tsang, and co-authors Victor Steinberg of VideoQ Inc. and Maxim Levkov of Artek Media International Inc., will illustrate technical advances in MXF implementations through laboratory observations of MXF video clips from multivendor sources alongside mathematically generated test patterns, master- and archival-grade video content, and an MXF metadata viewer. The presenters will focus especially on reformatting JPEG 2000, AVI, MOV, and uncompressed master/archive files into MXF for interchange and preservation.

“It was well worth playing, that’s for sure,” says Brent LeStage, the Grand Prize winner. LeStage won a 664 Field Production Mixer by Sound Devices valued at $4600 on the last day of the giveaway. He entered the giveaway faithfully almost every day of the 50 days. “I was really struck by the quality of merchandise they were giving away. That’s what motivated me to enter as frequently as I did. LeStage is a professional sound mixer who is working on a variety of film, television, and corporate video projects. Dreebin has worked as a motion picture sound recording engineer for over 30 years. A Hollywood native, he moved to Arizona 35 years ago and has been commuting to Los Angeles for all of his projects. Introducing the Zodiac Platinum DSD DAC

The new Antelope Zodiac Platinum DAC brings audio appreciation to a higher level, offering the audiophile community the widest DSD support, including the unique 256 DSD mode and a PCM sample rate of 768 kHz via a custom-built USB chip.

The Air Force Museum Theatre Flies in 3D with Severtson Screens on 60ft x 80ft SēVision 3D GX Projection Screen

The installation was part of an overall $800,000 audio and video digital conversion project.

We always do whatever it takes for our customers, but being able to do this for our military was an honor.”

Severtson Corp. partnered with Franklin Designs, Inc. of Ridgeland, Miss. and D3D Cinema of Evanston, Ill. on this project.

Ukraine Channel 1+1 Adds HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2

KYIV, Ukraine – Komora has announced the sale of a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2 digital mixing console to Ukraine TV channel, 1+1. The station, which was founded in 1995, immediately became a major force in the Ukrainian TV industry, and since 2004 has been offering a round-the-clock broadcast schedule.

The Kyiv-based professional sound specialist has a long-term relationship with the broadcaster, having supplied other HARMAN equipment in the past, including Soundcraft consoles, AKG microphones and dbx signal processing—as well as a Studer 928 analogue desk.

Part of the 1+1 Media Group, which also includes 2+2, TET, PLUSPLUS, UNIAN and 1+1 International, the channel presently operates an on-air studio and production area with another facility about to open soon.

The new Vista 5 M2 has replaced an existing console and will operate in a control room serving both the current and new studios. Based on the popular Vista 5 console, which has found its way into production facilities around the world, the compact, versatile Vista 5 M2 is configured with 30+2 faders, a local rack and four D21m I/O frames.

1+1 has built up a long working relationship with Komora based on mutual trust. They reviewed a number of broadcast desk brand leaders but particularly liked the Vistonics II™ interface of the Studer platform. They were already familiar with the Studer topology and build quality having run the Studer 928 analogue console for many years.

The new Vista 5 M2 will be assigned to news for two TV channels, weather forecast and daily 3-hour morning on-air programmes, as well as live shows featuring popular TV stars. Once it is built, the new studio will also host sports programmes.

Engineers have already received full onsite training from Studer’s Christoph Binder and the station says it is delighted with the new purchase, citing the desk’s ease of use, reliability and quick response which has fully justified the investment.

Clay Paky Sharpys and Sharpy Washes Accompany Bruno Mars Around the World on his Moonshine Jungle Tour

Singer-songwriter Bruno Mars has been getting rave reviews for his Moonshine Jungle Tour, which will continue to play dates around the world through March 2014. The tour is accompanied by Clay Paky Sharpy and Sharpy Wash fixtures.

“We were tasked with creating a world for Bruno and his band to inhabit,” says lighting designer Cory FitzGerald who codesigned the tour with Roy Bennett. “Bruno has a lot of sounds and pushes past a lot of genres, so he needed an environment that would accommodate all his music. The lighting fixtures help a lot with that. We have 42 Sharpy Washes and about 80 Sharpy beams and we’re very happy with the rig.” VER supplied the tour’s gear.

The versatile Sharpy Washes are “used for everything,” he says. “They’re the main wash for the show, and we have 36 overhead and six on the floor. We built a ceiling, and the Sharpy Washes are so small that they can be recessed in it and still shoot through.

“They also have a great zoom range and can do amazing beam effects,” he adds. “It’s great to have the option to go super wide or super narrow. The fact that they can color mix is a life saver.”

FitzGerald also made room for a number of Sharpys in the rig. “I can’t remember the last time I did a show without them,” he says. “They’re well established and high powered. With prism, frost and gobos I can get a lot of looks out of them. I have them everywhere on the show: overhead, on the back wall of light, on the floor. We even have 14 gold Sharpys on the deck.”

Dave Marcucci is the touring lighting director for the Moonshine Jungle Tour.
