Recording Arts School Adds TV Production to Curriculum with JVC ProHD Cameras

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS), a Phoenix-based audio recording, engineering, and production school, has purchased four JVC GY-HM600 ProHD handheld camcorders to support its new expanded curriculum. Starting Oct. 25, CRAS will extend its 30-week Master Recording Program to 36 weeks for new students, and will add live broadcast production audio as an educational focus.

The JVC cameras will be shared between a new control room and 42-foot production expando trailer, which have been outfitted with oversized audio areas for more convenient instruction. “We built a broadcast production facility with a basic switching system for the purpose of teaching how audio integrates into television production,” explained Robert Brock, director, CRAS Digital Department. “It’s been exciting, really fun for us to branch off in this direction.”

With a curriculum that includes music recording, film sound mixing, live concert support, and more, the CRAS curriculum is designed to help students prepare for a career in audio by exposing them to various facets of audio production. As part of the new broadcast production coursework, CRAS students will produce real video coverage of live events. The JVC cameras will usually be mounted on Manfrotto tripods with external zoom controls for studio exercises, but will also be used for ENG and film-style projects.

Regardless of their major interest of study, every student will have hands-on experience with the JVC ProHD cameras. “We’re not teaching video production, but the creation of multimedia content is part of what schools need to do,” he explained. “It exposes our students to a real broadcast environment and the bigger picture of what broadcast television is all about. These skills will apply to a number of employment opportunities.”

When CRAS went shopping for its new camcorders, it had three minimum requirements: XLR inputs, SDI output, and time code capability. Brock said the GY-HM600’s use of non-proprietary SDHC media cards was a “strong bonus.” Plus, with native file recording of .MOV footage, the cameras provided a “nice, easy workflow” for the school’s Final Cut Pro NLE workstations.

Although the new JVC cameras have not yet been used by students, CRAS faculty members have been shooting interviews, guest speakers, and other events since they purchased the cameras last spring. “In support of creating our curriculum, we’re starting to shoot more content,” Brock said.

Much of the footage being shot by CRAS is in recording studios, not TV studios, where work areas generally have dim lighting and light kits are not an option. As a result, the GY-HM600’s low-light sensitivity has been a big help, Brock said. He also appreciates the built-in 23x zoom lens, which captures high-quality close-up footage of guest speakers from the back of the school’s 6,000-square-foot conservatory. “That’s just been nice,” he said. “It’s a really nice, convenient package.”

With a focus on audio, not video, the new CRAS control room and expando truck are designed with very large audio areas and small, simplified video sections, which is the opposite of traditional video production facilities. When shooting in more traditional trucks, with noticeably more compact audio areas, Brock said the GY-HM600 has performed very well. “I was really pleasantly surprised at how wide a shot I can get,” he said, “and in those close, tight spaces that’s been very helpful.”

Vizrt provides Lockheed Martin interactive big data visualization tools

Vizrt has collaborated with Lockheed Martin to develop a solution that visualizes big data in an interactive platform called the Multi-Touch Executive Dashboard (MED). To graphically visualize big data, MED combines Lockheed Martin’s real-time data asset management software, Microsoft’s Perceptive Pixel displays, and Vizrt’s Viz Artist for 3D modeling, animation, and graphics creation, and Viz Engine for real-time 3D graphics visualization and rendering at resolutions of up to 4K.

The first large-scale big data visualization implemented is Lockheed Martin’s MED-E (Multi-Touch Executive Dashboard for Energy), designed to graphically illustrate layers of high-volume information about the status of energy resources, distribution, and supply. For example, WindOptimizer is a MED-E suite of cloud-based services that provide real-time sensor data, including weather forecast prediction and wind energy supplies, so that wind farms, power companies, and other energy companies can provide for more cost-efficient wind resource management.

Vizrt R&D teams in Europe along with designers and support in the United States worked closely with Lockheed Martin to design a system that had to meet a high-standard of quality for data visualization while at the same time be very flexible in its application. This allows for a wide range of industries to be able to utilize the product and have it customized for their specific needs.

“In developing the MED-E platform, we wanted to push the boundaries of Viz Artist and Viz Engine as a powerful live data harvester and interactive visualization platform,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, Vizrt’s CTO, based in Bergen, Norway. “For MED-E, we’re taking multiple silos of data sources and coalescing them into one final, scalable, big picture visualization representing all these different data layers. And we are doing it live when live data is available.”

The MED platform interface allows multiple users to select icons that bring up multiple graphics and visual elements that they can then manipulate and interact with on Perceptive Pixel’s 82-inch LCD display. Viz Artist was chosen for use in the MED and MED-E visualization platforms because its 64-bit environment features advanced data gathering tools and plugins. The plugins allow designers to integrate custom logic easily into a scene, creating interactive elements such as click buttons or support for touchscreens. And, as a powerful rendering engine, Viz Engine is used as the complete graphics and video layer for applications requiring high-fidelity, low latency content and interactivity.

“The MED platform can also be adapted to a wide range of vertical markets—such as medical imaging, military defense, energy exploration, geo-intelligence, and business information/intelligence systems and supply chain analytics—where knowledge workers need to make timely decisions based upon their understanding of relevant big data,” said Matt Kier, principal project engineer for Lockheed Martin. “Lockheed Martin and Vizrt have worked together on several projects and our relationship has been mutually beneficial. The Vizrt development teams in Norway, Austria, Thailand, and across the globe have helped us develop a platform that is easily integrated for our international customers, visually intuitive and tailored for any customer language.”

“This collaboration with Lockheed Martin is incredibly exciting,” added Jakobsen. “Together we’re developing a solution to one of today’s most complex problems, that of capturing, harnessing, and managing big data using a very user-friendly, interactive, 3D graphics-rich data visualization platform.”

HARMAN’s Martin MAC Viper Quadray™ – Four Times the Excitement

AARHUS, Denmark — As HARMAN’s Martin continues to provide the brightest and most reliable professional lighting equipment to the industry, today, it’s new MAC Viper Quadray is officially launched, adding to Martin’s award-winning MAC Viper Family of moving heads. This unique, multi-beam luminaire has been deployed on international tours, including the Sarah Brightman tour with lighting design by Andi Watson, and Pitbull with lighting design by Justin Geiger.

The MAC Viper Quadray allows for the projection of four individually controllable rays of light – a new effect providing a unique aspect to any show.

An efficient effects engine provides designers and programmers the ability to create a whole new variety of looks that would otherwise be difficult or even impossible to program via a lighting console.

The MAC Viper Quadray houses a narrow-range zoom and includes the same high-quality feature set as the MAC Viper AirFX, including a vibrant color mixing system and stunning aerial designs. Additionally, it features the same compact form, impressive speed and superior light quality from the MAC Viper Family’s 1000-watt lamp.

The MAC Viper Quadray is available as an easy-to-install front lens replacement kit for any standard MAC Viper AirFX. The lens kit installs (and uninstalls) quickly, providing flexibility of use and greater value from a single luminaire.

“The ability to individually maneuver and manipulate up to four beams from a single luminaire provides designers new possibilities in static or dynamic mid-air effects,” stated Brian Friborg, President, Martin US. “For the end user, Quadray provides another great lighting tool, as well as increasing the rental house benefits from added flexibility and enhanced value for their MAC Viper AirFX portfolio.”

Atlona Releases New HDMI/VGA Switcher/Transmitters and Scaler/Receiver

Units Combine Digital and Analog Inputs With HDBaseT(TM) for Flexible Transmission and Control

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Oct. 7, 2013 — Atlona(R), a leading digital connectivity solutions provider, today announced the release of its new HDVS family of HDMI(R) and VGA/Audio products the AT-HDVS-TX box, AT-HDVS-TX-WP wall plate switcher/transmitters, and AT-HDVS-RX scaler/receiver with signal transport via HDBaseT(TM). When combined, these products provide connectivity and control for installed AV systems by enabling the use of both VGA and HDMI sources in addition to control of connected displays. For VGA sources, analog audio is embedded within digital video signals.

In smaller rooms with digital displays such as flat panels and projectors with DVI or HDMI inputs, the new units provide the most effective solution to transition from analog to digital sources. With balanced analog audio de-embedding, the units provide a simple interface to external audio systems, while the integrated scaler ensures compatibility of VGA sources with any display. The AT-HDVS-TX-WP fits both U.S. and U.K. 2 gang wall-boxes and features a rugged steel construction, making it ideal for classroom settings.

With HDBaseT, users obtain reliable connection distances up to 230 feet (70 meters) from the wall plate using a single category cable. Because they use Power over Category cable (PoCc), there is no need for a power source at the wall plate, leading to a simple installation and setup process. Both the AT-HDVS-TX and the AT-HDVS-TX-WP are controllable by illuminated buttons, RS-232, or using auto-switch to select the last connected source. Flexibility is furthered with the AT-HDVS-RX a fully functional scaler — now equipped with HDBaseT input and HDMI output with balanced, de-embedded analog audio. Additionally, the unit can control displays based on signals received from the AT-HDVS-TX or AT-HDVS-TX-WP or can be controlled by RS-232.

Both the AT-HDVS-TX or AT-HDVS-TX-WP can be used for switching/control in a simple system or as input and output devices in larger systems. The AT-HDVS-TX is ideal for use with displays with HDBaseT inputs, since it can be powered both directly as well as by PoCc from the receiver. For systems with multiple displays, the AT-HDVS-RX scaler/receiver provides simple resolution management and signal distribution via HDBaseT.

“Our new switcher/transmitters and scaler/receivers mark a significant step for Atlona as we begin to produce products that are specifically designed for today’s commercial AV marketplace,” said Bill Schripsema, commercial product manager, Atlona. “We consider our new HDVS products to be the perfect solutions for the requirements of today’s small systems and we look forward to providing support for larger systems in the very near future.”
