Simonds Stadium Installs Australia’s First Ever HARMAN BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-805 AVB System

GEELONG, Australia – Simonds Stadium has become one of the biggest and most successful multi-purpose venues in Australia’s Victoria Region. The Stadium’s third stage of renovation was recently completed with the addition of a new southern grandstand, increasing seating capacity to over 35,000. During the renovation Simonds Stadium was outfitted with a HARMAN BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-805 AVB system, making it the first venue in Australia to benefit from the extensive audio-video bridging system. Australian-based Total Events Co. performed the installation.

The Soundweb London BLU-805 combines the proven and respected Soundweb London platform with the industry-supported AVB transport. The BLU-805 provides 64 incoming AVB channels and 64 outgoing AVB channels at 48kHz or 32 incoming AVB channels and 32 outgoing AVB channels at 96kHz. The stadium utilizes the HiQnet™ London Architect software for configuration, control and monitoring of the system. The audio is fed from the Soundweb London devices via BLU link to the HARMAN Crown CTS amplifiers in various rack rooms that drive the speaker system.

“The main audio feed is derived from the existing system control which is about 300 meters away from the new racks, so we used AVB to link from that system to the new zone,” explained Bill Busbridge, Managing Director of Total Events Co. “The BLU-805 picked up its feeds nicely. The BLU-805 also controls three function spaces and it certainly made our job a lot easier.”

Total Events Co. also designed, supplied, and installed the PA system for the new grandstand that includes JBL AWC129 and AWC82 all-weather loudspeakers. In addition, JBL Control 25AV speakers cover the walkways and JBL ceiling speakers cover the functions spaces.

“We installed fourteen JBL AWC129 speakers and sixteen JBL AWC82 speakers for the seating bowl and under balcony fills,” remarked Busbridge. “We chose them as they are robust, high powered and totally suitable for the application. They also fitted in well with the architect’s aesthetic requirements.”

Commenting on the simplicity the BSS Audio system offers, Busbridge said, “I’ve been back a couple of times to tweak the system and it is really simple to patch back in and make changes on the fly.”

“The Today Show” Brightens Up the Morning with a New Set Plus a Moving Light Package from WorldStage

For the first time in seven years NBC’s iconic “The Today Show” has introduced viewers to a new set enhanced by a moving light package from WorldStage. The complement of fixtures supplied to lighting designer Fred Bock includes nine Martin MAC 350 Entour LED spots, 10 Martin MAC Aura LEDs, nine Clay Paky Sharpy Washes and six Clay Paky Alpha Profile 800 STs.

The new set is “a combination of modern and homey at the same time,” says Bock, who previously teamed with WorldStage on NBC upfronts and the ESPN booth at the US Open. “There’s a lot of automation and a lot of displays. The Home Base Desk is on a turntable, which allows the home base for the opening of the show to turn around and face Rockefeller Plaza for the first time,” he explains. “Viewers can come in and look right into the window and then pull into the studio.”

According to Bock, “the moving lights are mostly used in the production area where big interviews, cooking demos and music performances take place. They have to keep that space as flexible as possible to deal with all types of production in a small space.”

The network has been promoting LED usage where practical and Bock says the MAC Auras and 350s fulfill that mandate and “give a more natural look” to the new set. The Clay Paky Sharpys provide “a nice punchy light” for music. “They do many different things, from a tight beam to a nice wash on the floor – they help modernize the look of the studio,” he reports.

Bock is also “enamored” with the flat beam of the Clay Paky Alpha Profiles. “Their shutters work really well,” he adds. “They have great effects and smooth dimming.”

Choosing WorldStage to furnish the moving light package was “a no brainer,” says Bock. “WorldStage has a very strong working relationship with NBC, and I have a great relationship with them. They’re always there whenever you need something; they respond at a moment’s notice.

“We needed to test equipment, and WorldStage got it to me very quickly. They were so responsive and helped us make our decisions. It’s very helpful to be able to rely on WorldStage for a changing project like this where you can’t plan for everything.”

At WorldStage Drew DeCorleto who was the account executive for the project, stated “We were very pleased to be part of the team supporting this update. At WorldStage we understand the particular demands of the network environment and we have always worked hard to be an ideal vendor for NBC and other broadcast projects.”.

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

Red TX Captures Stephen Lawrence’s Tribute Concert

Broadcast audio specialists Red TX was at London’s O2 Arena on September 29th, 2013, to capture the broadcast audio for Unity – A Concert For Stephen Lawrence.

Artists including Rita Ora, Beverley Knight and Jessie J were joined by Emeli Sande, Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran for the concert, which was held to mark the 20th anniversary of Stephen’s death in southeast London.

Red TX was commissioned to handle the broadcast audio by Paul Dugdale, who was directing the project on behalf of ACME TV. Dugdale previously worked with Red TX during the summer when the company recorded The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park.
For the Unity concert, which was broadcast on BBC 2, Red TX used its main Red 1 outside broadcast vehicle, with engineers Tim Summerhayes and Ollie Nesham at the controls.

“We knew the event was going to be challenging due to a tight schedule and the shear amount of artists and tracks involved,” Paul Dugdale says. “As a director, it’s such a blessing having someone like Tim involved, not only because I know he’s great in those high pressure situations, but that you know the finished product will come out sounding amazing, too.”

Tim Summerhayes adds: “We recorded the concert as live because we had enough time to create snap shots during the sound check. We also had some time the following day to tidy up the audio before delivering it to The Farm where it was dubbed and made ready for broadcast on the evening of Tuesday October 1st. Although there were a large number of artists involved, it was a relatively straightforward project and we were all really pleased with the results.”

The concert was part of the SL20 Campaign, which is celebrating Stephen’s life with a series of awareness-raising events through the year. Funds from the show will go to The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which aims to create brighter futures for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
