NUGEN Audio Updates ISL Inter-Sample True-Peak Limiter

In Response to Customer Requirements, New Version Supports 7.1 Surround Sound and True-Peak Limiting for Apple Mastered for iTunes

LEEDS, U.K. — Oct. 16, 2013 — NUGEN Audio, creator of intuitive tools for audio professionals, today announced the release of a significant update to ISL, its inter-sample true-peak limiter. In response to high customer demand from the film and game sectors, ISL is now available in a 7.1 surround channel configuration and adds the ability to limit true-peak audio according to the Apple Mastered for iTunes methodology.

ISL is part of NUGEN Audio’s range of innovative and intuitive loudness correction tools, which includes VisLM and LM-Correct. Providing complete control over peak levels in audio signals now from mono to 7.1, ISL measures inter-sample peaks and allows users to set the true-peak limit rather than the traditional threshold at which limiting begins. By measuring and correcting for inter-sample levels, ISL protects against distortion that can be introduced when codecs such as MP3 and AAC are applied downstream. With the new release, ISL’s true-peak detection algorithm now enables accurate assessment of audio and preparation of cleaner compressed files for Apple’s all-important iTunes(R) channel.

“With the adoption of 7.1 as a standard format for the forthcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, the game audio industry now joins the film audio market in its need for high-quality 7.1 audio tools. Since we have a large number of customers in both sectors, extending ISL with this additional functionality makes perfect sense,” said Jon Schorah, creative director, NUGEN Audio. “Support of Apple Mastered for iTunes is an essential new option for our customers in the music mastering and distribution sectors, since this is now recommended practice in the industry and a key factor in getting exposure for an artist or piece of music.”

Like all NUGEN Audio tools, ISL is intuitive to use and lets audio professionals mix with their ears, leaving ISL to ensure compliance with loudness standards. Designed for the transparent limiting of relatively dynamic high-quality audio, ISL can also be used to hard-limit and reduce dynamic range where required. Features include comprehensive dBTP metering, adjustable channel linking, support for audio formats from mono to 7.1, adjustable ballistics, color splits, and peak indicators. Using the standardized true-peak algorithms of ITU-R BS. 1770 and related standards such as Apple Mastered for iTunes, ISL is suitable for post-production and broadcast applications.

The latest version of ISL is available as a free update for existing users. More information about ISL and other NUGEN Audio products is at www.nugenaudio.com.

North Shore-LIJ Health System Upgrades to JVC GY-HM650 ProHD Cameras

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced North Shore-LIJ Health System, one of the largest nonprofit, secular hospital systems in the country, recently purchased three GY-HM650 ProHD cameras to upgrade its HD production efforts. Since the hospital system purchased its cameras in late May, its three-man media production team has been shooting HD footage for a variety of projects, from promotional videos on location to surgical procedures in the operating room.

Albert Ritondo, North Shore-LIJ assistant director for media productions, said the video team is often asked to be in the OR to document new procedures or provide footage for network television stations. As part of the public relations department, they also provide coverage of press conferences to share with local stations – and coverage has improved with the new JVC cameras.

“The 23x lens was a nice addition,” Ritondo explained. “It’s great for shooting press conferences from the back of the room. And the low-light shooting is a plus.”

The GY-HM650s are also being used extensively for a new 13-week series, Focus on Health, which will debut regionally on Cablevision and Verizon FiOS in November. According to Ritondo, the new series is replacing Medical Update, a basic multi-camera studio interview show. Focus on Health primarily features packages shot in the field.

JVC’s .MP4 native file recording means no transcoding is required for editing on North Shore-LIJ’s Sony Vegas NLE systems. Ritondo said the non-proprietary SDHC cards used to record footage on the GY-HM650 are not only convenient, but they are affordable enough that North Shore-LIJ uses them for archive.

With 16 hospitals across New York City, including five tertiary hospital complexes, North Shore-LIJ is one of New York’s largest employers. Its media productions team has been shooting in HD since 2005, purchased the new JVC ProHD cameras to replace its aging Sony HVR-Z7U HDV camcorders as part of a transition to a completely tapeless workflow.

Ritondo said the GY-HM650 delivers a significantly better image than the HDV cameras. “We’re really happy with the quality,” he added. “They’re great cameras – great images, very light, and easy to use.”

BHV Broadcast’s Syntax Bridge Wins “STAR” Award From Editors of TV Technology Europe

AMSTERDAM — Syntax Bridge, conceived and manufactured by BHV Broadcast and incorporating Microvideo’s powerful metadata processing engine, is the recipient of a 2013 STAR (Superior Technology Award Recipient) Award given by the editorial staff of TV Technology Europe magazine at the 2013 IBC convention.

The STAR is designed to celebrate and showcase technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. TV Technology Europe’s editor reviewed a variety of products, examined the technical applications and their overall contribution to the industry, and then chose 25 winners.

“STAR awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way,” said Mark Hallinger, Editor of TV Technology Europe. “This year in particular we also looked for smaller incremental improvements in established products, as these improvements generally reflect a manufacturer responding to customer input, a laudable thing.”

Syntax Bridge, the result of integrating BHV’s award-winning Syntax up-scaler with Microvideo’s well-proven HDB-300 VANC/VBI converter, was brought to market to address the ever-growing requirement for closed captions as part of the retention of metadata through the broadcast chain. Now broadcasters and facilities managers can enjoy Syntax’s unrivalled upscaling quality with full control of closed captions and other VBI data, benefitting from BHV’s artefact-free up-conversion and Microvideo’s comprehensive metadata processing in one compact and cost-effective package.

BHV Broadcast’s managing director, Julian Hiorns, stated “We are delighted to add another prestigious STAR award to our collection. Syntax Bridge is a unique collaboration of outstanding technologies from two companies that understand the need for superior artefact-free HD up-conversion with sub-titling capabilities. We are honoured that the editors of TV Technology Europe recognised its ability to fill a serious void in the industry and delighted to be working with Microvideo on this project.”

Added Hallinger, “The products selected help advance the industry—-some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products.”

Firehouse Productions Brings Extensive Riedel Artist Intercom System to MTV Video Music Awards

WUPPERTAL, Germany — Oct. 16, 2013 — Riedel Communications, provider of pioneering real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that Firehouse Productions used a substantial deployment of Riedel’s Artist digital matrix intercom systems to provide flexible broadcast-quality communications throughout the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Aug. 25 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“The VMAs are a very fast and dynamic show,” said Mark Dittmar, vice president of design and engineering at Firehouse Productions, the Emmy(R) Award-winning provider of sound for some of the entertainment industry’s most popular live music and awards shows. “Seven separate shows are put together to create the entire experience, and each of these shows has its own communication needs, as well as the need to communicate with the larger group. These demands make the Artist system, with its inherent usability and flexibility, a perfect choice.”

This year’s VMAs once again brought the industry’s biggest names to the stage, with performers including Drake, Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga. The show also featured the latest fashions as stars made their way down the red carpet at the host venue, the Barclays Center. During the show, the complement of Riedel equipment supporting communications included six Artist 64 frames, one Artist 128 frame, two Artist 32 frames, and 44 Artist control panels, along with 50 C3 beltpacks, and 49 BTR-800 beltpack systems.

Firehouse relies on the Artist intercom system, as well as the Riedel RockNet audio network, for nearly every live television show for which it provides sound and communications systems. The Artist digital matrix intercom system is based on a dual optical fiber ring to form a single large full-summing, non-blocking distributed matrix. While the system “feels” like a single unit, it has no limitations in the number of cross-points within or between the different nodes of the system. The Riedel solution allows for rapid setup of a flexible backbone that can be adapted easily to support each show’s unique communications requirements. During the VMAs, the communications crew accessed the Artist’s user-friendly yet powerful Director configuration and control software to make changes instantly, with the simple click of a mouse.

“At Firehouse we have been using the Riedel family of products for years, and they are an integral part of our operations,” added Dittmar. “In our opinion, working with the Artist intercom system is the only way to do a TV show. Its flexibility and reliability are unparalleled.”

Genelec Provides Great Sound for Spare Time Entertainment Center

— Family-owned and newly renovated, this Lansing, Michigan, family fun center needed an upgrade in sound, and Genelec was the obvious choice for bowling lanes, a gaming center and a restaurant —

NATICK, MA, October 14, 2013 — The Spare Time Entertainment Center’s 31 lanes of premium bowling are the focus of the facility in Lansing, Michigan, but there’s lots more to this newly renovated family fun center, including a two-story laser-tag game facility, part of its 4,000-plus-square-foot game arcade, and the Grand River Bar and Grill, a full-service dining and catering facility. What they all have in common is sound by Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring currently celebrating its 35th anniversary.

The main bowling area has six Genelec 8030A compact Bi-Amplified Monitoring System loudspeakers across the front of the lanes, installed near the scoring video panels, with five more Genelec 8020A Bi-Amplified Monitoring System loudspeakers located along the rear wall of the room. In addition, there are three Genelec 7050B Active subwoofers placed every eight lanes. A boutique bowling area, the Capital Room, has five Genelec 8030s and a 7060 sub covering its very private eight lanes. There are five more 8020s in the Grand River Bar and two 8030A’s in the game room area.

Genelec speakers are making every aspect of the Spare Time Entertainment Center sound great. Peter MacColeman, family member and Manager of Spare Time, says his experience with Genelec goes all the way back to college where, when studying music, he looked for a pair of speakers that would give him the most transparent musical experience he could find.

“I chose Genelec then and we chose them now, for Spare Time, because Genelecs sound great, are incredibly robust in installed environments, and have incredible intelligibility even while reproducing music fully,” MacColeman explains, further noting that the sound systems in the previous bowling alley on that site had conventional passive loudspeakers powered by remote amplifiers, a situation that drew 120 amps. “With the self-powered Genelecs, the entire system here is running on 12 amps,” he says. “The sound of the facility is important to the guest experience – people like to hear music and they like to talk, and the Genelecs let people enjoy both because the music is always present without having to be overpowering. The Genelecs are tuned well – too much high end can turn off the kids and too much low frequency can annoy adults. Genelecs are musical because they reproduce well and accurately over all frequencies, so you don’t have to tweak any EQ to get them to sound right. They’re just great speakers.”

BenQ Projectors Light up Downtown Dallas During ‘The Aurora Project’ Art Exhibit

Outdoor Contemporary Art Event Comes to Life With Colorific(TM) Projector Image Quality

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Oct. 15, 2013 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of digital lifestyle innovations, today announced the sponsorship of “The Aurora Project” — a free outdoor contemporary art exhibit held in Dallas on Oct. 15 to 18, 2013. Providing a total of sixty Colorific(TM) projectors to the cross-genre event, BenQ is continuing its commitment to the visual arts community — providing mixed-media artists and curators with projectors that blend both ease-of-use and market-leading color quality to bring today’s most daring creative visions to life.

Held within the rapidly developing Dallas Arts District, The Aurora Project stages interactive new media projects involving light, video, performance, and sound set in exciting and unexpected public places. For two nights, the event will transform Dallas’ 68-acre downtown core into one of the nation’s largest outdoor exhibitions of contemporary art, featuring collaborations between hundreds of local, national, and international artists. With a new branch located in Dallas-Fort Worth, BenQ’s involvement in the one-of-a-kind experience echoes the company’s pledge to support both local cultural events and the larger artistic community.

“BenQ is excited about being a new member of the Dallas community, and we are thrilled to lend our support to Aurora 2013,” said Jan Spence, Director, Marketing Communications at BenQ America Corp. “By developing projectors that provide spectacular image quality, a growing number of curators and artists are turning to our technology for their creative projects. With the ability to cast over one billion stunning colors in a variety of setups and lighting scenarios, our Colorific projectors are specifically equipped to push the boundaries of the imagination, inspiring audiences through the magic of larger-than-life installations.”

Designed for visual display projects such as art projection installations that require prolonged image projection, BenQ’s Colorific projectors deliver more than one billion stunning colors, higher contrast ratios, and longer-lasting image quality over extended usage. As a result, projection installations gain more stable pictures with richer blacks, more luminescent whites, and a crisper overall projection experience. Thanks to their high contrast ratios, BenQ projectors also deliver sharper picture quality, which enables the reproduction of finely detailed images in a variety of ambient lighting settings, and adds to the flexibility of the projectors’ installation options.

“Within the arts community, BenQ is increasingly contributing as a patron of innovative projected visual art, supporting a number of important exhibits and events across the country,” said Spence. “As today’s mixed media artists seek simple ways to unleash their creative visions, BenQ projectors provide an appealing combination of reliability, durability, and immaculate performance to ensure that image quality is sustained over long projection periods.”

Symetrix Simplicity at Italy’s Opera Universitaria

Opera Universitaria's new theatre in Trento, facing the rake

Opera Universitaria's new theatre in Trento, facing the rake

LAVIS, ITALY: 15 OCTOBER 2013 – Widely regarded as the educational, scientific, financial, and political hub of Northern Italy, Trento is proud to boast of its excellent college – the Opera Universitaria. Ranked as first in the country by the Ministry of Education, Opera’s mission is to ensure that a student’s full potential can be realised – whether that stems from sport, academic work, or the arts. After enlisting the help of AV integrators A&T Multimedia, and distributors, Adeo Group, the college’s new theatre has been equipped with a comprehensive technical installation, enabling complete control over audio, lighting, and video.

Opera’s consultant specified that the theatre must be multi-functional, and that the technical system needed to offer standalone use by anyone, trained or not, without the assistance of the college’s AV department. As a result, A&T was required to design a system which allowed flexible mixing for musicals and plays, whilst also delivering simple and user-intuitive control for lecturers and presenters.

“Our goal was to find a digital signal processor which could directly link to a theatre-sized mixing console” commented Alessandro Baroni of A&T. “This would allow the end-user to control all audio via a simple preset recall, but should more complex mixing be needed, the console could simply be activated and off they’d go.” After discussing the idea with distributor, Adeo, the integrator settled on a combination of Symetrix’ open-architecture Radius 12×8 DSP for ‘standard use’, with a Yamaha LS9-32 looking after performance audio.

As both mixer and DSP feature Audinate’s award-winning Dante protocol, Baroni chose to connect all inputs into the rear of the Radius before channelling them over Cat5e cable into the LS9’s optional MY16-AUD card, and then back to the DSP again for loudspeaker processing. This allows seamless switching between ‘lecture mode’ and ‘performance mode’, and provides the means for non-technical staff to control audio via either the Radius’ front-panel, or through the SymVue touchscreen control software configured by A&T’s Symetrix-certified programmer.

With the new theatre space being designed to handle the most impressive occasion, Adeo recommended Renkus-Heinz’s IC-live loudspeakers (four ICL-FRs and 4 ICL215S-FRs) to provide seamless coverage, with Beyerdynamic wireless microphones (OPUS 910s) enabling wire-free movement. Lorenzo Seneci of Adeo Group states that the system “needed to provide a very high SPL to cater for the wide range of different events, but to achieve this we would traditionally have to employ point-source loudspeakers or line arrays. However, due to the aesthetic restraints in place, it demanded a beam-steering solution.”

Panasonic projectors were also brought in to handle video content and are controlled by an Extron video distribution unit. “We are totally satisfied with the end-result” remarks the university’s spokesperson. “The Radius’ preset recall is very simple and completely suitable for the range of different situations we encounter.” The performance space is seeing rave reviews by the student body and the general public, both of which appreciate the careful design and installation work carried out to enhance Trento’s latest shows.
