Genelec Debuts G Two Active Loudspeaker

NATICK, MA, October 10, 2013 — Genelec is debuting its new G Two Active Loudspeaker, part of the new Genelec G Series of Active Loudspeakers. Offering an exceptional home audio solution, the G Two (Woofer 4″ + Tweeter 3/4″) joins three other models in the series: G One (Woofer 3″ + Tweeter 3/4″), G Three (Woofer 5″ + Tweeter 3/4″) and G Four (Woofer 6.5″ + Tweeter 3/4″); as well as the complementary F One (6″ active) and F Two (8″ active) subwoofers. The G Series and F Series models are designed to be used together or separately. The G Two and its brethren feature elegant industrial design by award-winning designer Harri Koskinen and Genelec’s R&D team.

The G Two active two-way loudspeaker combines an organic, rounded form with powerful and precise sound reproduction. The gently curving design is not chosen for good looks alone. Sharp edges or corners on a loudspeaker enclosure cause acoustic reflections that interfere with the direct sound. This harmful interference – diffraction – is dramatically reduced by the smooth, curved design of the G Series, audible in the excellent resolution and solid sound imaging of the products. Blending seamlessly to the enclosure shape, the proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™) formed around the high-frequency driver is designed to match the frequency response and directivity characteristics of the two drivers. This results in a smooth frequency response on- and off-axis and controlled directivity maximizing the direct sound aimed to the listening area.

G Two Specifications:

Maximum sound pressure: 96 dB per loudspeaker @ 1 m
Frequency response: 65 – 21000 Hz (-3 dB)
Drivers: Bass 4″ + Treble 0.75″ metal dome + DCW
Amplifier power: Bass 20 W + Treble 20 W
Dimensions: H x W x D: 9.53″ x 5.94″ x 5.59″ with Iso-Pod™ (242 x 151 x 142 mm)

ABS Celebrates Media Technology Expo Success in Seattle, Portland

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced the 2nd Annual Media Technology Expo (MTE) was successful in its Seattle debut and had continued success in Portland, Ore. Both sites attracted hundreds of attendees earlier this month, and the company is already making plans to present the event again in2014.

MTE began in Seattle on Oct. 1 at Fremont Studios, then relocated to Left Bank Annex in Portland two days later. Both locations included a full schedule of free educational seminars and an exhibit hall with more than 50 exhibitors. “I appreciated meeting so many vendors in one place,” said Jon Rauch, production administrator, Bremerton Kitsap Access Television in Bremerton, Wash. “Sometimes I have questions about new products that I just can’t find answers to online. Talking to a vendor in person solves that.”

Jerry Eichten, executive director, MCM Television in McMinnville, Ore., agreed the show was a good opportunity to connect with product representatives. “It helped our facility planning as we gathered valuable information about items we expect to purchase in coming months,” he added.

The exhibit hall featured a wide range of technology, including cameras, lenses, integrated production systems, shared storage and archive solutions, media asset management, media monitoring, and more. Educational seminars covered technical topics including 4K, wireless microphones, and streaming video workflows. The Seattle event also hosted meetings for the Washington Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (WATOA).

“MTE is always a great opportunity for us to share technology with our regional customers and the professional audio and video community at large,” explained Arco Groenenberg, executive vice president and general manager, ABS. “We were very pleased with the turnout in Seattle and plan to keep MTE as an annual event in both cities. Both locations attracted attendees from every segment of the professional video marketplace, and the feedback we received was very encouraging.”

“With technology changing so rapidly, education is more important than ever, but not everyone can afford to attend the major industry trade shows,” said Mark Siegel, president, ABS. “MTE provides hands-on product demonstrations and a free conference program so video professionals in the Pacific Northwest can check out the latest gear and stay current with industry trends.”

Dolby Atmos, HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers and Crown Amplifiers Provide World-Class Experience at Promenade Cinemas

SAN JUAN CITY, The Philippines—The most revolutionary cinema sound experience yet is coming to the Philippines and will be experienced at the new cinemas opening soon at the Greenhills Promenade in San Juan City. Set to open this month, the new Promenade Cinemas 6, 7, and 8 will be equipped with Dolby® Atmos™, the latest audio solution that revolutionizes the experience of sound in entertainment and transports moviegoers right into the middle of each scene. The Dolby Atmos system at the Greenhills Promenade also features a world-class HARMAN audio system, including JBL ScreenArray® loudspeakers and JBL 8350 Cinema Surround loudspeakers, powered by Crown® DriveCore™ Install (DCi) amplifiers.

The Dolby Atmos system creates life-like sound where each of the JBL surround loudspeakers is independently amplified with Crown, creating discrete channels of surround sound in the cinema.

Greenhills Cinemas was given the right to debut Dolby Atmos in the Philippines by Dolby through its Southeast Asian distributor, the Goldenduck Group, Thailand’s primary cinema equipment and services company.

“The JBL loudspeakers are located throughout the theater, not just in front and at the sides,” explains Paolo Mendoza, VP of the Music Museum Group, Inc. and general manager of Greenhills Cinemas. “With Dolby Atmos, you are able to move sounds anywhere in the theater. The result is an exciting, powerful environment never experienced before in cinema viewing.”

Director Peter Jackson (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) has called Dolby Atmos “the completely immersive sound experience that filmmakers like myself have long dreamed about.”

“It’s more 3D than 3D images,” said Mark Andrews, director of Disney Pixar’s Brave, where the sounds of arrows whizzing by, horses galloping, and bears stomping place the viewer right in the middle of the action.

Introduced in April 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, award-winning directors and sound engineers, and leading exhibitors worldwide. More than 70 films around the world have been released or are scheduled to be released with Dolby Atmos sound. Dolby Atmos has also received technical achievement awards from both the Hollywood Post Alliance and the Cinema Audio Society.

Local moviegoers will experience Dolby Atmos for the first time at Promenade Cinemas with the showing of Pacific Rim, the science-fiction monster film directed by Guillermo del Toro.

“The Dolby Atmos system is quickly gaining momentum around the world and exhibitors are also recognizing JBL loudspeakers and Crown amplification as the optimal components for use in Atmos systems,” said Chuck Goodsell, Senior Manager, Cinema, JBL Professional. “The system at Promenade Cinemas exemplifies the possibilities when world-class loudspeakers and amplifiers are paired with the most cutting-edge cinema audio format in the world!”

“At Dolby, we are passionate about providing filmmakers and storytellers with innovative technologies and tools that create the most engaging cinematic experiences. With Dolby Atmos, filmmakers can place or move sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, creating a sound field so natural and realistic that moviegoers feel as if they are in the center of the action like never before,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories.

About Dolby Atmos
Dolby Laboratories is equipping the cinema world with its new Dolby Atmos technology. Dolby Atmos unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by providing sound experts the creative freedom to easily place or move specific sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, not just where there happen to be speakers. The result is what moviegoers have described as the most engaging and lifelike cinema sound experience ever.

Introduced in April 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, six Academy Award® winning directors, and 10 Academy Award winning sound mixers, among others. More than 250 Dolby Atmos screens have been installed or committed to in 30 countries with over 85 exhibitor partners. More than 70 films from 10 different countries—representing a broad range of genres, from action thrillers and animated features, to comedy and horror—have been or are scheduled to be released with Dolby Amos sound since the first film debuted in June 2012. Dolby Atmos has received technical achievement awards from both the Hollywood Post Alliance and the Cinema Audio Society.

Digital Nirvana CEO to Speak at SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition

Session will focus on the importance of live stream monitoring

Newark, CA – At the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers’ (SMPTE) 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, Hiren Hindocha, Digital Nirvana’s CEO, will give a presentation on the importance of live stream monitoring. The conference takes place October 22-24 in Hollywood, California.

Mr. Hindocha is one of the speakers in the session titled, “Evolving Technology for Broadcast Facilities – Part 2,” which takes place on October 23rd from 11-12:30. Mr. Hindocha’s lecture will focus on why live stream media monitoring is essential for today’s broadcasters and the ways it can be monitored.

As live streaming continues to grow in popularity, reliable live stream monitoring becomes more and more crucial. In the phases of the live stream workflow, many things can go wrong and compromise the user experience, yet broadcasters may not even be aware of workflow failure unless they’re monitoring and recording their live stream programming.

The benefits of live stream monitoring go far beyond quality control and analysis. Live stream monitoring, logging and recording also helps with compliance and ad run verification. New FCC web captioning mandates make it necessary for broadcasters to monitor and record their live streams to prove compliance. Additionally, online advertisers now demand proof that their ad campaigns ran as scheduled. The easiest way to prove ad runs is to monitor and record the live stream.

While networks are equipped with the necessary tools to monitor traditional broadcasts, they’re lacking the same for streamed media. Currently, when broadcasters do monitor streamed content, they do so with a labor-intensive, manual approach. The solution lies in a cloud-based, automated, scalable system that can reliably monitor the live streamed programming of broadcasters. Mr. Hindocha’s SMPTE 2013 presentation will delve deeper into these points and highlight the key advantages and methods of performing live stream monitoring today.

SMPTE 2013 is the premier annual event for motion imaging and media technology, production, operations and the allied arts and sciences. The three-day conference brings together decision makers from motion picture studios, broadcast and distribution networks, production and post-production community, software companies, systems integrators and others leading the evolving motion imaging industry. To find out more about the conference, visit www.smpte2013.org.

Calrec Makes Fourth Sale to CSP Mobile Productions

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — Oct. 17, 2013 — Calrec Audio today announced the sale of its fourth audio console to outside broadcast (OB) company CSP Mobile Productions. The rapidly growing Maine-based company is installing an Artemis Light console in its new HD truck, its fourth new HD truck in less than three years for its all-Calrec HD fleet. The new truck, which rolls out Dec. 1, will cover sports including MLS, NBA and college basketball, NHL and college hockey, football, Major League Baseball, and Major League Lacrosse games, as well as live entertainment events.

“We’re adding another truck because we’re stretched to capacity with the three HD trucks we already have. We’ve had such a good experience with our other Calrec consoles that it made sense to choose Calrec again,” said Len Chase, CSP Mobile president and co-owner. “Besides that, some of our biggest clients prefer Calrec equipment. We also needed a console that was user-friendly for the freelancers that we use in the market every day. Because Calrec is pretty much a standard for the industry, freelancers already know how to operate the consoles.”

CSP Mobile is installing a 56-fader Artemis Light console with a 72 x 48 analog, 64 x 64 AES, and 512 x 512 MADI I/O configuration. The truck is a 53-foot expando designed for up to seven eight-channel EVS servers, 16 cameras, and 28 frame syncs. The desk will route audio signals for live broadcasts, including all announcers, replay audio, graphics audio, music, and live effects. The Artemis Light will give CSP Mobile flexibility for configuring the I/O, whether the truck is covering a game or setting up Calrec Hydra2 stageboxes for a rock concert. The console’s versatile software will also allow CSP Mobile to configure a familiar layout on the desk easily via the touch screen in order to align with whatever systems its clients use, a capability that will save time for the engineers and freelancers during setup.

Calrec partner Studio Consultants Inc. handled the sale and will provide ongoing technical support.

“We build our products to keep customers coming back,” said Henry Goodman, Calrec’s head of sales and marketing. “The fact that CSP Mobile has added a second Artemis Light — and the fourth Calrec console — to its fleet proves the console’s flexibility and cost-effectiveness in the competitive OB business, where companies need to maximize every piece of equipment.”

HARMAN Professional Audio System Overcomes Acoustical Challenges at India’s Dharmaram College Chapel

BANGLAORE, India – Dharmaram College, part of the CMI Congregation in Bangalore and home to the Dharmaram College Chapel, recently underwent a complete redesign of the audio system to overcome the chapel’s architectural design challenges. With an insufficient existing sound system and a reverberation time of nearly three seconds, local systems integration firm Acoustic Control was presented with a major sonic challenge. To help overcome it, Acoustic Control turned to products from HARMAN’s JBL, Crown, BSS Audio, Soundcraft and AKG brands for a complete audio system solution.

The chapel has had more than three different sound systems installed over 35 years in attempts to provide clear speech and tame the tough acoustical environment created by the domed roof . The team at Acoustic Control conducted a study on the current PA system and the acoustics in an effort to identify possible areas for improvement.

Although the chapel was plagued by excessive reverberation, acoustical treatments were not an option, as it would detract from the domed chapel’s beautiful appearance. Acoustic Control had to provide a system that would compensate for the chapel’s highly reverberant acoustics and would also easy to use for unskilled operators.

“We had to install a brand new audio system from the ground up, as the existing PA could not be re-purposed,” said Sanjay Mudartha, Director, Acoustic Control. “The speakers were placed at the sides of the chapel, which was not a proper location and made it impossible for the system to deliver adequate coverage and directivity.” Mudartha and his team conducted an acoustical analysis of the chapel using EASE (Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers) software, which provides the ability to model specific loudspeakers and determine the speakers’ interaction with the room being modeled.

“We have vast experience with the JBL VerTec range of loudspeakers and we were confident we could achieve a great-sounding solution in the Dharmaram College chapel,” noted Mudartha, “but we had to validate their performance within EASE modeling software and also fit within a budget before we could present our recommendations to the client.” JBL VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements, powered by Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers, met the performance parameters specified by Acoustic Control.

“We achieved an STI Speech Transmission Index of around 0.7 with the system able to deliver a target SPL of no less than 100dB across the chapel in a smooth, consistent manner,” said Mudartha. “Considering the acoustical, architectural and budgetary challenges we had to deal with, the measured and audible results are especially impressive.”

In order to ensure that the system would be easy to use, a BSS Audio BLU-100 device was configured to provide processing and necessary signal management features such as automatic mixing. The main AKG D5 microphone inputs were automated so that the chapel would have consistent sound for public speaking. A dedicated Soundcraft MFXi 20 console was provided with which to mix music inputs.

Commenting on the successful project, Prashant Govindan, Director, India Operations, HARMAN Professional said, “The venue’s limitations and project challenges were systematically and expertly handled by Acoustic Control, without disturbing the chapel’s aesthetics. The new system had to deliver better results despite the existing acoustics. The selection of Harman equipment has perfectly complemented the design specifications with higher levels of satisfaction for the system users in the chapel, and the visitors who are now able to more clearly hear both speech and music.”

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of infotainment and audio solutions for the automotive, consumer, and professional markets. It is a recognized world leader across its customer segments with premium brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon®, and Mark Levinson® and leading-edge connectivity, safety and audio technologies. The company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems.
