Verrex Celebrates AV Week 2013 Launches Q&AV Series Lunch & Learns

DPA Microphones Takes its Final Leap into the d:ep End

Company renames remaining mics in collection to reflect the popular ‘d:’ branding

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 18, 2013 – DPA Microphones is delighted to announce at the 135th International AES Convention (Booth 2551) that its 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature and 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphones will be joining the ‘d:’ family of names. Building off the success of the company’s new “d:” branding, the current 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature Mics now fall into the d:screet™ Miniature Microphones group and the Five-channel surround solutions are henceforth known as the d:mension™ Surround Microphones.

DPA has also chosen to add the ever-popular 4066 and 4088 Miniature Headsets under the d:fine™ Headset Microphone category, and the mics will also receive an upgrade to coincide with the existing d:fines. Additionally, it’s new d:dicate™ Recording Microphone line combines the company’s best new and existing capsules and preamplifiers from the previous Reference Standard series.

“A few years ago, we decided to change the names of our new products to make them more recognizable and easy to remember,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “In the past, our products were branded with numbers, which were difficult to understand and remember unless you were a DPA aficionado. We wanted names that were more meaningful and more interesting. After some brainstorming, we decided on the ‘d:’ (colon) names. Starting with a ‘d’ made it easier to remember as it connects the mics to the DPA name, and leaving out the second letter gave it a graphic element that worked well with our new DPA design.”

Announced at DPA Microphones’ recent Partner Conference at the DPA Microphones Denmark headquarters, the unveiling of the new d:screet Miniature Microphone and d:mension Surround Microphone names is another step in the company’s plans for full “d:” branding. Each product category has been carefully planned out by the DPA Microphones team.

With the company’s 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphone now grouped together under the d:mension Surround Microphone line, customers can easily swap between capsules and boom options. Comprised of the 4080 Miniature Cardioid Lavalier, as well as the 4060 and 4090 Omnidirectional Hi-Sens Microphones, the d:screet line also includes the company’s new 4098 Podium Microphones announced earlier this year.

“We found words starting with the letter ‘d’ that fit the significance to the product line,” continues Poulsen. “For instance, people are devoted to their instrument and to their sound, therefore our d:vote Instrument Microphones. The d:fine name was selected as we felt the microphone would define a new generation of headsets. The d:facto because the mic sets a new standard within vocal microphones and d:dicate for people who are dedicated to superior sound. Each name was introduced as there was significant updates within each product group.”

Now known as the DPA d:mension Surround Microphone, the 5100 is a compact microphone that provides users with ease of use and stunning sound quality. It is ideal for bringing truly engaging surround ambience to sport events, documentaries and other applications that especially require HDTV production. The d:mension 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A are complete Surround Kits with five carefully factory-matched d:dicate microphones. The 5006A kit features d:dicate 4006A omni mics exclusively, while the 5006-11A is made up of a combination of the 4006A omni and 4011A cardioids mics and the 5015A is comprised of the 4015 wide cardioids.

Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and close-miked instrument applications, the d:screet 4060 capsule is highly unobtrusive, which lends itself to an exceedingly accurate omnidirectional pattern. Also a member of the d:screet family, the d:screet 4080 is well suited for broadcast, conference and other live performances in the studio or in the field. It is acoustically pre-equalized, which makes the voice more distinguishable and improves speech intelligibility.

Resorts World Casino New York City Improves Surveillance with JVC Cameras

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced Resorts World Casino New York City, located at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, is using almost 200 JVC IP-based HD security cameras as part of its expansive security camera network.

From parking areas to gaming areas, from documenting transactions to documenting medical incidents, video cameras keep watch over more than 3,000 slot games and 5,000 electronic table games at Resorts World Casino New York City. The facility attracts about 20,000 visitors per day and up to 30,000 per day on weekends. All video surveillance is operated through a Synetics VMS system, and the JVC cameras are connected using the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) specification.

Jason Arnett, assistant director of surveillance, said the casino environment is challenging for video surveillance efforts, because video slot machines and electronic table games feature lighting and imagery that is constantly changing. “The contrast between the light and the dark raises havoc on the cameras,” he explained.

Resorts World Casino New York City has the added issue of windows across the track side of the facility, which changes the light in the facility throughout the day. The JVC cameras, however, deliver 30 fps imagery with almost unnoticeable imaging issues, Arnett said.

In the money cage, images from the JVC HD cameras are so sharp you can read the denominations on the bills, which was not possible with previous security cameras. “The color quality is spot on,” noted Sandy Moss, lead surveillance technician. “They provide very, very high quality images.”

Although the casino opened in 2011 with Sanyo cameras exclusively, the casino chose to expand its surveillance efforts over the past year with JVC cameras. Arnett was impressed with JVC’s image quality, but the test area for the first few cameras featured some unique lighting that was creating very red video imagery. To resolve the issue, JVC engineers produced external software tools to allow the casino to adjust settings for lighting, color adjustments, backlight, and more.

Like many casinos, Resorts World Casino New York City has an IP-based infrastructure built around multiple virtual LANs. The new JVC tools also allow the surveillance team to adjust camera parameters across the various virtual LANs, which saves a great deal of time.

“JVC also set up presets for us that are really designed for the casino environment,” Arnett added. “The engineers were great. They worked with us to build these new tools, and we’ve been having great success with them ever since.”

The casino has installed a combination of JVC VN-H657WPU outdoor PTZ dome cameras and VN-H257U indoor dome cameras. Both cameras feature True Day/Night performance, JVC’s Super LoLux HD™ technology for superior low-light color reproduction, and 1920×1080 full HD imagery. The VN-H657WPU also includes 360-degree endless PTZ functionality and a newly-developed Direct Drive Motor for quieter, more accurate pan/tilt operation.

After almost a year in service, there have been no major problems with any of the JVC cameras. In fact, Moss said the JVC cameras have been so successful that the company has already begun using them at other properties, including Resorts World Bimini Bahamas and Bimini SuperFast, a ship that transports up to 1,500 passengers from Miami to the island casino resort.

“Our successful installation at Resorts World Casino New York City is a great example of why JVC is a strong player in casino security,” said Masafumi (Masa) Nakano, vice president, JVC Security Divison. “Our cameras deliver the reliable performance and outstanding imagery required in extreme casino environments.”

The Freedom of Sound: The New Neumann TLM 107 Microphone

Standard-setting Microphone Features Multiple Polar Patterns for Studio, Broadcasting and Demanding Home-Recording Applications

New York City – October 18, 2013: At this year’s Audio Engineering Society Convention, premium audio brand Neumann [booth 2831] announced its newest studio microphone: The TLM 107 large diaphragm microphone. It stands for innovation based on tradition and is a universal, standard-setting microphone with multiple polar patterns for studio, broadcasting and demanding home recording applications.

The TLM 107 features a surprisingly fresh design and a novel operating concept. Wolfgang Fraissinet, President of Neumann.Berlin, explains: “The TLM 107 is a modern, high-resolution sound transducer with excellent reproduction characteristics that enable it to capture the original sound without any coloration, thus ensuring unlimited design freedom in mixing and post-production.”

For the first time, all of the microphone switch functions are controlled through an elegant, wear-resistant navigation switch. The contemporary, intuitive operating concept includes an illuminated pattern display in the chrome ring, with the Pad and Low Cut status LEDs positioned to the left and right. The switch and display are located on the rear of the microphone so as to not distract singers. After 15 seconds, the display is turned off automatically, allowing the TLM 107 to be positioned discretely on the stage.

The newly developed double diaphragm capsule is inspired by one of Neumann’s top models, the D-01. With its exceptional impulse fidelity, the TLM 107 is particularly suitable for percussion and the finest overtones of stringed instruments. As a multi-pattern microphone made by Neumann.Berlin, the TLM 107 is impressive not only in the cardioid setting, but delivers balanced sound for all five directional characteristics: Omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8, with the intermediate patterns wide-angle cardioid and hypercardioid.

For all polar patterns, up to 8 kHz the sound reproduction is almost linear, while a slight high frequency boost lends brilliance and freshness to recordings. Particular attention has been paid to the natural reproduction of the human voice, especially the critical “s” sound. Low sensitivity to pop sounds is ensured by an acoustically optimized grille, which has a characteristic Neumann design, with youthful, flowing lines. The capsule is designed to minimize sensitivity to humidity and other environmental influences. For example, the front and rear diaphragms are at ground voltage, thus preventing the electrostatic attraction of dust particles. In order to ensure that no dust enters the interior, the sound transducer — like all Neumann capsules — is mounted in one of the best cleanrooms in Germany.

Transformerless circuitry permits a high degree of linearity and a large dynamic range. The self-noise of only 10 dB-A is practically inaudible. The maximum sound pressure level, specified as 141 dB SPL, can be increased to 153 dB SPL via the two-stage pre-attenuation, so that sound from even the loudest sources can be transmitted without distortion. The switchable Low Cut with the settings Linear, 40 Hz and 100 Hz has been carefully adapted to practical recording situations: The 40 Hz setting eliminates interference noise below the range of fundamental tones, while the 100 Hz setting is ideally suited to speech and vocal recordings.

Solid State Logic Launches New and Improved Matrix2 Console at the 135th AES Convention

New Version Adds Powerful Features to Unique Hybrid Production Console

NEW YORK — Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, launches Matrix2 at the 135th AES Convention (Booth 2821). Since its 2008 launch, the SSL Matrix console has established a high-profile clientele who value its unique capabilities as a genuinely hybrid production platform. Its combination of SSL analogue summing, streamlined integration of boutique analogue outboard mic pre’s and processing (via its software controlled analogue patch system) and advanced DAW control surface, Matrix provides production power and flexibility like no other console. This new version of the Matrix takes feedback from customers and provides a collection of powerful new features.

One of the unique and much praised features of Matrix has always been the integrated software controlled patching of analogue channel inserts, and this has been significantly upgraded in Matrix2. Hardware device inserts can now be loaded directly from the console hardware controls, previously this was done only via the remote browser software, with an intuitive new interface that facilitates loading individual processors, A/B comparison of different processors and building processor chains. A powerful ‘Fader Linking’ system has been added to the console, which allows two or more faders to be grouped, to facilitate stereo or 5.1 channel control or subgroup style mixing. The A-FADA (Analogue Fader Accesses DAW Automation) summing system used in Duality, AWS and the new SSL Sigma rack has been introduced to enable the analogue faders of Matrix2 to be driven by automation data from a user’s DAW. A-FADA enables channel automation to be performed entirely in the analogue signal path but with the advantages of DAW automation data editing. The addition of A-FADA to Matrix2 facilitates project portability between different SSL products. The previously optional 5.1 output card will now be included as standard pre-fitted in all units.

A collection of smaller new features have also been added including ‘partial TR setup save and import,’ which allows selected parts of the console setup to be saved and imported as setup templates; new Preset insert matrix ‘scenes;’ Preset insert naming tools; “automatic dB readout” for Pro Tools users, allowing the scribble strip to automatically display fader values upon touch; modifier key ‘press and hold’ functionality for Cubase/Nuendo users and new DAW templates for Presonus Studio One and Ableton Live!

Matrix2 will ship in December 2013 priced $23,999, £14,749 and €18,487 + Tax.
All of these new features (excluding the 5.1 output card) will be available to existing customers as a free upgrade.

Sennheiser’s Digital 9000 Wireless System, HDVD 800 and Neumann KH 310 Monitor Nominated for 29th Annual TEC Awards

Sennheiser and Neumann Receive Nominations in Wireless Technology, Amplification Hardware/Studio & Sound Reinforcement, and Studio Monitor Technology Categories

ANAHEIM, CA – October 17, 2013 – Audio specialist Sennheiser announced that its Digital 9000 Wireless System, HDVD 800 Headphone Amp/DAC, and the Neumann KH 310 Monitor have been nominated for Outstanding Technical Achievement for the 29th Annual TEC awards. The presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place during the 2014 NAMM Show, to be held in Anaheim, Calif. in January 2013.

Sennheiser’s Digital 9000 Wireless System, which has been nominated in the ‘Wireless Technology’ category, is the most advanced professional wireless system in the world and supports professionals across broadcast studios, theaters, and live performances. The HDVD 800 Headphone Amp/DAC, which has been nominated in the ‘Amplification Hardware/Studio & Sound Reinforcement’ category, allows for optimal performance when paired with any Sennheiser audiophile headphones. The Neumann KH 310 Monitor, meanwhile, is a three-way active tri-amplified monitor that is nominated in the ‘Studio Monitor Technology’ category.

Presented by the Technical Excellence & Creativity Foundation, the TEC Awards are the professional audio industry’s most prestigious awards. Nominations in Outstanding Technical Achievement in Product Design were made by a select panel of sound and music industry professionals in numerous audio specialties, and were were based on product entries by audio manufacturers. Products and projects released and in commercial use during the period of September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013 were eligible for a nomination.

The Sennheiser Digital 9000 Wireless System:

The Digital 9000 Wireless System offers completely uncompressed and artifact free digital audio, combining sonic purity and outstanding dynamics. It’s the first digital wireless system that works without compression, allowing for full HD audio transmission. The system uses extremely steep filters to allow a very narrow set-up of the respective radio frequencies within the available frequency range. Through this, the risk of intermodulation is eliminated, allowing for the most reliable wireless operation.

Senheiser HDVD 800 Headphone Amp/DAC:

The HDVD 800 Headphone Amp/DAC is a solid-state amplifier that generates the ultimate acoustic performance when paired with any of Sennheiser’s audiophile headphones. It highlights crisp, balanced and distortion-free sound through a high-quality Burr-Brown digital/analog converter (DAC). The amplifier is outfitted with an symmetrical input socket, which allows for incoming signals to be symmetrized before processing takes place. The HDVD 800 also offers an extra USB input, allowing for 24 bit data transmission at 192 kHz.

Neumann KH 310 Monitor:

The Neumann KH 310 monitor can be used in a wide range of acoustical conditions in a variety of locations such as project and recording studios, broadcast centers and OB vans. Its many uses range from a near-field monitor, a front loudspeaker in mid-sized multi-channel systems, or a rear loudspeaker in a larger multi-channel system. The KH 310 is a three-way active tri-amplified monitor utilizing Mathematically Modeled Dispersion™ Waveguide (MMD™). Specifically, on Wednesday October 23 at 9.30am in the AMC 19 auditorium, the Christie and Dolby 4K laser projection and audio technology demonstration will set new standards for image and sound presentation. Christie’s prototype 4K laser projector will be fronted by a RealD XL Cinema System and accompanied by Christie Vive Audio speakers and amplifiers configured for Dolby Atmos – a new audio solution that revolutionizes the experience of sound in entertainment – to deliver a premium cinema experience.

Christie leads the industry in the development of cinema laser projectors, having announced in August the supply and installation of the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema. Exhibitors will finally have the capability to show movies in 3D projected at 14 foot-lamberts, the standard brightness level for 2D presentations, but virtually impossible to achieve with a single projector for 3D on all but the smallest screens.

In the AMC 17 auditorium, Christie has installed two Christie Solaria CP4230 4K projectors in a
Christie® Duo™ configuration, fronted by the RealD XL-DP Cinema System and connected to a
Dolby Atmos system. Again, this configuration allows movies in 3D to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, a brightness level typical of 2D presentations but seldom achieved with 3D screenings.

Christie SKA-3D Cinema Processor


The combination of two Christie Solaria projectors and the Christie Duo integration kit is significantly less expensive than other branded ‘big screen’ industry solutions. With lower upfront costs, and no ongoing revenue sharing, Christie Duo is the global solution for creating an affordable, premium large screen movie experience. The RealD XL-DP Cinema System is a pair of matched left- and right-eye polarizing filters featuring a patented XL light-recovery technology. It was designed specifically to be used with dual DLP Cinema® projector installations having larger screens, typically greater than 65 feet wide (20 meters).

A complete projection solution for screens up to 35 feet, the Christie Solaria One comes with a zoom lens, custom-designed Xenon lamp, and a Christie Integrated Media Block (IMB) with its own easy-to-operate Screen Management Software (SMS). The Solaria One is brightest in its class, since it projects 8000 lumens in the DCI color space, 9000 for alternative content and in its Solaria One+ variation, projects 9000 lumens in the DCI color space and 10,000 lumens for alternative content.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft to Host Si Series Training Sessions at AES Convention

NEW YORK, New York – At the 135th AES convention in New York, HARMAN’s Soundcraft is hosting free training sessions for its Si Expression and
Si Performer lines of digital consoles. The sessions are being held daily from October 18-20.

The educational sessions build on Soundcraft’s successful Mixing with Professionals (MwP) program and will be hosted by Katy Templeman-Holmes and Tom Der of Soundcraft. In addition to hands-on training with the Si Expression and Si Performer consoles, the sessions will offer training with the Multidigital, Dante and MADI cards found in the consoles.
