RTW Delivers 145 TM3 TouchMonitor Units to WDR

Feature-Rich Pro-Grade Loudness Meters Prove to Be Practical Administration Solution

COLOGNE, GERMANY, 17 OCTOBER 2013—RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, has delivered 145 TM3 TouchMonitor units to German broadcaster WDR, Europe’s second-largest broadcaster after the BBC. The units, which WDR has installed in its regional studios and editing suites, enable the broadcaster to comply with EBU R128 loudness metering.

With the development of EBU R128, the audio metering reference has shifted from PPM to loudness, with a peak level (QPPM) of –9 dBFS to a loudness target of –23 LUFS (Loudness Unit Full Scale). Since August 2012, when all German broadcasters agreed to implement EBU R128-compliant loudness metering, WDR has employed a large number of TM7 and TM9 units. Installing the TM3 for EBU R128-compliant loudness metering in smaller editing suites was a natural next step.

WDR opted for the TM3, the smallest member of the TouchMonitor family, because it offers not only PPM and true-peak meters, but also supports all current loudness metering functions compliant with the major international standards (including EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-3/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB) for up to six channels. The broadcaster also liked that the TM3 could display measurements by single channels, summing bar graphs, loudness range or numerically, with the capability of separating displays as needed for easy viewing by multiple users. The TM3’s flexibility and easy-to-use setup software, which offers customizable administrative support, was also a factor in its purchase.
“The display provides excellent readability and the software offers great views for a large number of applications,” says Friedrich Neher, head of the master unit service group at WDR. “In addition, the similarity to the TM7 and TM9 units already in use at WDR was an attractive point. Also, we liked the idea of using the TM3 as a standalone device. The separation of the display unit and the breakout box were critical, as this considerably increases the flexibility compared to competing products.”
Martin Leuenberg, head of sales at RTW, also noted that while plug-in solutions might seem like a realistic alternative, they have two major drawbacks. “First, any user can change presets or the setup. Second, this would have added another GUI to an already cluttered screen area,” he says. “While you might think that an integrated plug-in would ensure clarity, it comes at the cost of precious display area.”
As freelancers and full-time employees share the same work areas at WDR, the company requires a powerful administration solution to ensure seamless workflows. The Devicer DC1 setup software component for the TM3 allows for preset customization, allowing users to configure administration rights for the application, making sure that only authorized employees can change the setup.
RTW’s TM3 TouchMonitor comprises a horizontally or vertically mounted display unit for easy readability along with a separate interface box. The meter handles analog (balanced or unbalanced) as well as digital stereo signals (AES, S/PDIF). The TM3-6CH version accepts up to six AES3 input signals. The easy-to-use interface ensures fast and intuitive touch operation. The supplied factory presets provide a good set of samples for the supported applications, connection options and standards, and also allow for out-of-the-box operation. Plus, the existing presets can be customized easily using the Devicer DC1 software for Windows and Mac OS.

Christie’s Educational Forum Designed to Increase Visual Display System Knowledge in Simulation Industry

CTSI Chooses Martin Audio For W Washington D.C. Hotel Upgrade

The W is a popular luxury stopover in our nation’s capital located “next door to the White House” on 15th Street in the heart of W Washington D.C. The hotel was remodeled in 2009 and designed with contemporary interiors and color schemes that combined seamlessly with the original beaux-arts exterior, which was carefully preserved.

CTSI (Corbett Technology Solutions, Inc.), a leading area integrator based in Chantilly, VA, was originally brought in to work on the hotel’s Crestron lighting systems because they have a master programmer fully certified in the technology.

From that point, CTSI was asked to update the original audio systems put in by a competitor in the W’s celebrated P.O.V rooftop lounge, terrace and lobby. Over recent years the lounge has morphed into a nightclub and CTSI initially began the audio upgrade by modifying the DSP and replacing speakers that had been damaged by DJs.

It soon became apparent that a comprehensive audio system upgrade was required and CTSI specified a range of new equipment including Martin Audio OmniLine arrays and AQ Series speakers for the lounge, terrace and lobby.

Asked about the acoustic challenges for each space in the W Hotel, Mike Wilson, CTSI Director of Systems Engineering explained, “The P.O.V. lounge is on the roof or 11th floor of the building and consists of a nightclub and outdoor terrace area with an awning that faces out onto the Treasury building across the street. The hotel’s VIP suites are right underneath the lounge on the 10th floor and the increased SPL levels would either bounce down to the street or back to the side of the hotel off of the Treasury and disturb the guests on the lower floors.

“Because the sound systems were cranked as loud as they could be, the original wall-mounted speakers and subs throughout the room sent vibrations down through the original plaster walls, which was also a problem. Our clients wanted to maintain a ‘nightclub’ sound within the space without affecting the lower floors below so we chose a Martin Audio OmniLine array because it provides enhanced intelligibility, has a very small, non-intrusive form factor and can be hung from the ceiling without adding a lot of weight.”

“The lounge is a rectangle and the bar is located in the center of the long side of that rectangle,” continues Wilson. “With the help of Martin Audio’s software we designed a system with a left-right array on each side of the bar comprised of an AQ210 sub and an 8-module OmniLine array with optimum splay angles for each cabinet underneath. This gave us the full range we needed to cover the room while controlling the volume and vibrations and keeping sound off the floor and back wall. The AQ cabinets were chosen for their effective mid-bass sound and ultra-compact design.”

Another major challenge for CTSI was carrying the nightclub sound from the lounge outside onto the rooftop terrace while controlling it so guests in the VIP suites below weren’t disturbed. Their solution was mounting eight Martin Audio AQ10 two-way cabinets high up on the exterior brick wall to provide the necessary coverage without overspill problems down the sides of the building. As Wilson points out, “We were able to aim the AQs down using better mounting and alignment techniques while providing improved DSP control with the software. That plus the 10” woofer gave us lower end sound to better simulate the club-like sound from the lounge onto the terrace.”

The majestic W hotel lobby presented another distinct challenge with a 25-foot ceiling, hard plaster walls and ceiling and marble floors. CTSI needed to design a system with exceptional clarity and articulation far beyond the original recessed 70-volt speakers that created non-intelligible sounds at normal listening heights.

Again, Martin Audio OmniLine arrays were selected for their small form-factor design and lighter weight to overcome the drawbacks implicit in older plaster walls. According to Wilson, “Every Friday and Saturday night they put up velvet ropes for entrance to the lounge and feature a guitarist and singer so they wanted a better sound system that would allow guests to enjoy that.

“So the OmniLines were a good choice because of their coverage and range and the music in the lobby was acoustic so we didn’t have to worry about the low end as much. We wall-mounted two hangs of 4-module arrays about 15 feet off the ground and the software helped us figure out the different angles we needed for the room. We supplemented the low end by tweaking the DSP and making the full-range ceiling speakers more midrange to fill out the bass end.”

In addition to the full complement of Martin Audio speakers, the upgrade also included Biamp DSP systems and Lab Gruppen amplification. To make them even less visually intrusive all of the speakers were custom-painted by Custom Refinishing Solutions located in Baltimore, MD to specifically match paint sample numbers provided by the hotel; clean white for the terrace, black for the lounge and off-white for the lobby.

Summing up, Wilson says, “OmniLine was the right choice, mainly because of their small footprint and excellent coverage. The Hotel wanted the upgrade to be as clean and ‘invisible’ as possible. Ultimately, they were very happy with the audio levels, clarity, intelligibility, coverage and overall sound quality of the Martin Audio system we provided.

“As for the lounge itself, the speakers sound great and fit very well into the environment in terms of what they need. They bring in big name DJs and are happy because they now have a real nightclub-sounding environment with a stereo left/right point source as opposed to a 70 volt-distributed system around the room. According to reports from the hotel, even guests have commented positively on the upgrades.”

Canon Launches New S-Series of Ultra-Compact, Lightweight, Full HD Network Cameras with Built-In Analytics

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 17, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, added four new Full HD resolution network cameras to its product lineup – the VB-S30D PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) Micro Dome Full HD Network Camera, VB-S31D PT (pan-tilt) Micro Dome Full HD Network Camera, VB-S800D Fixed Micro Dome Full HD Network Camera and VB-S900F Micro Box Full HD Network Camera. The new ultra-compact S-series network cameras have been designed for indoor environments that require sensitive monitoring of specific areas or items, such as in the retail, education, commercial and hospitality sectors. PoE (Power over Ethernet) and ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile-S Conformance allow system integrators easy installation of all four new lightweight full HD cameras as part of a new or existing security network.

In addition to multi-streaming, the cameras can also do simultaneous streaming. The full range supports edge recording on microSD cards (up to 64GB) and features a new utility that can playback directly from the microSD card without the need to download content to a PC first.

All of the new S-series cameras benefit from Canon’s 70-year heritage in imaging technology and include Auto Smart Shade Control, which automatically selects the optimum exposure level and helps compensate for dark areas while simultaneously maintaining the bright areas by adjusting the gain of the underexposed areas. This is possible without affecting exposure of properly exposed areas. This feature enhances overall image quality and allows the cameras to work easily in back-lit environments or difficult lighting conditions. With built-in video analytics that sense movement, abandoned and removed objects, camera tampering and changes in volume, the S-series of network cameras are an ideal choice for a range of applications.

Compatible with major third-party solutions and ONVIF v2.2 and Profile S compliant, the new S-series cameras are expected to start shipping at the end of 2013.

Key features of the series include a compact head design, GRIP connector with locking technology and the ability to handle 1080P/60 HZ up to 100 feet (30 meters) without baluns. The line is comprised of pre-terminated cables in lengths from .5 meter to 30 meters and replaces the company’s original Clear Series.

ICE Cable’s unique GRIP connector attaches to female HDMI connectors with up to 15 lbs of pull-force, thus helping reduce disconnected cables and frivolous service calls. The compact size of the head (measures 10 MM by 19 MM by 21MM) contributes to easier side-by-side and stacking connections and takes up less space behind equipment.

In addition to an active chip set, proprietary cable technology allows the Clear Series 2 to achieve 1080P/60 HZ in runs up to 100 feet without the use of a balun, ideal for direct connections from Blu-ray DVD players and DVRs to the TV.

HISTORIC GIBSON’S BOOKSTORE EXPANDS USING AN ASHLY NE8250.70PEM PROCESSOR/AMPLIFIER FOR DIVERSITY OF PLANNED EVENTS

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE – OCTOBER 2013: Gibson’s Bookstore opened in Concord in 1898 and has been a cornerstone of the community’s cultural and intellectual milieu ever since. Seizing on the revitalization of the city’s historic downtown, owner Michael Herrmann recently moved the bookstore down the street to the first floor of a brand new five-story office building. At 10,000 square-feet, the move more than doubled Gibson’s floor space and incorporated the newly-acquired Imagination Village educational toy store. The fact that it was new construction gave Herrmann the opportunity to design the store to his exact specifications. Included within those specifications is a sophisticated sound reinforcement system that will gracefully accommodate events of varying sizes and styles. A single, two-rack space Ashly ne8250.70pem eight-channel 250W network amplifier with an on-board Protea™ DSP processor is paired with four Ashly neWR-5 wall-mounted remote controls to form the cost-effective heart of the new location’s flexible, easy-to-use sound system. Factory-installed microphone preamp inputs complete the amplifier package.

“The old location was small enough that a simple, consumer-type sound system could do the job,” explained Rick Elliott, production manager at MFI Productions, the firm that designed and installed the new sound system at Gibson’s Bookstore. “When the owner was looking over the plans with designer Kat Whouley of Books In Common, he realized it would take something more high-tech to do it right. He wanted the flexibility to accommodate any type of event, but he also wanted to make sure that his staff could operate the system intuitively.” Herrmann stopped in at Concord’s Capitol Center for the Arts (literally right across the street from the new location) for recommendations, which led him to MFI Productions. The firm worked with Herrmann for an entire year to ensure that the sound system they installed would be right in every respect from the beginning. After all, they had the opportunity to install it while the building-to-be was still nothing more than steel and concrete.

As the design evolved, the number of zones grew from just a few to eight. Separate Pandora music boxes allow different content to play in the children’s section, the main floor, the café, and the on-hold phone system. A handful of line and microphone inputs accommodate a simple acoustic music setup, a presentation, or a lecture. Two outdoor speakers handle the café’s outdoor seating area, while Twenty-four Electro-Voice Evid C8.2 coaxial ceiling speakers cover the bookstore and are zoned so that speakers can be either muted or used for events of various sizes in either the children’s section or the main section. Since it was easy to install during construction, Elliott ran a few extra input lines that the store can grow into if needed. Four Ashly neWR-5 network wall-mounted remote controls placed at strategic locations allow staff to intuitively select zone inputs and control the volume in each zone.

A single, two-rack space Ashly ne8250.70pem provides all of the necessary microphone preamplifiers, input processing, I/O matrixing, and loudspeaker processing, along with eight channels of amplification at 250W per channel into 70V. “The Ashly ne8250.70pem was the right solution because of its simplicity and flexibility,” said Elliott. “It could do everything that the expanded Gibson’s would require, and, when paired with four Ashly neWR-5 wall-mounted remote controls, could deliver that functionality in a way that would be transparent for the staff. When you consider that the two-rack space ne8250.70pem is handling all of the processing and amplification for the entire store, its cost is more than fair.” To help with the evolving system use, the IT contractor allowed Elliott to get through the bookstore’s firewall so that he can make adjustments to the ne8250.70pem from anywhere in the world.
