FSR’s T6 FLEX Control Named Winner in 2013 WFX New Product Facility Awards

Woodland Park, NJ – FSR is proud to announce that its T6 FLEX control unit, ideally suited for churches with congregations of varying sizes, has been named “Most Innovative Green Product” in the 2013 WFX New Product Facility Awards. Winners were revealed earlier this month in Dallas during the Worship Facilities Conferences & Expo (WFX).

FSR’s small, powerful, affordable T6 FLEX merges a simple touch screen control system with an elegant table box for fingertip room control. The fully-featured unit controls a full-range of AV equipment from an attractive, convenient housing making it perfect for classrooms, children’s ministry areas and other rooms in worship facilities.

“FSR is honored that our T6 FLEX has received this prestigious WFX Award from Worship Facilities Magazine, Worship Facilities Designer Magazine and Church Production Magazine. FSR wanted to design a compact unit that would deliver outstanding performance and yet also meet the needs of facilities that may be facing budget constraints. We are truly pleased that the very community in which we designed this product has recognized our efforts,” explained Jan Sandri, FSR president.

Encased in an elegant and convenient housing at an appealing price point, the T6 FLEX allows Houses of Worship control over a variety of AV equipment, including projectors, displays and playback devices as well as screens and shades without the aid of an IR remote. It can serve larger installations as an auxiliary controller for the seamless switcher, the control point for remote pan / tilt / zoom cameras and much more. The system’s vast number of features and its ability to control a full-range of AV gear also makes it ideal for classrooms, student, young adult and children’s ministry areas, family viewing rooms and other AV equipped worship and meeting facilities.

The control system’s touch screen is housed in the hinged top of a T6 Series table box. When closed, the T6 FLEX presents an elegant and stylish appearance and the control system is out of sight. When open, the touch screen is easily accessible as are the interior compartments that can be populated with a variety of AC, audio, video and data connector plates available from FSR.

Non-technical volunteers can operate the T6 FLEX’s user-friendly touch screen with confidence and ease. Should they need assistance, AV personnel can remotely control the system using Flex Remote, a software application available for Windows®, Windows8®; Window RT®; Windows Phone®; Android® tablets and phone; iPad® and iPhone®.

The T6 FLEX installations throughout the campus can be centrally monitored using Flex Manager, a Windows based application that tracks the current status of each T6 FLEX and provides usage information, projector lamp life monitoring, remote control and advanced scheduling that saves energy by making sure that equipment is off when not in use.

The T6 FLEX features four serial ports, four IR ports (each able to control up to four devices), four GPIO ports, an IP port, built-in clock/calendar with scheduler, multi command scripting, conditionality and Power over Ethernet.

The 2013 WFX Awards are presented by Worship Facilities Magazine, Worship Facilities Designer Magazine and Church Production Magazine and are the leading annual national awards program recognizing innovative new facility products for the church market, church building design and management and innovative new technology products for the church market. WFX Award Winners were determined by Church Production Magazine, Worship Facilities Magazine and Worship Facilities Designer Magazine editors, distinguished members of the WFX Advisory Board, and WFX.

Testronic Announces Centralization of US Operations

Burbank Facility Optimizes Efficiencies in Upgraded Location

(Burbank, CA) Testronic will unveil a single, redesigned location in early November 2013, to centralize US operations and streamline customer services. The move is focused on increasing efficiencies and integrating infrastructure for the company, which is the global leader in quality assurance services for film and television, games, software, and digital television. For the past seven years, Testronic has operated two facilities in Burbank, California. The company will now perform all of its testing and QA services from their high tech hub located at 111 North First Street, in Burbank.

Jason Gish, SVP and General Manager of Testronic’s US Operations, said, “Testronic began a multi-phase expansion of our First Street facility two years ago, and the centralization of our services is the final piece. We have spent significant intellectual and financial capital to build out our downtown Burbank test environment, where we unveiled our File-Based QC Lab, UltraViolet(tm) Interoperability testing services, and other innovative offerings like User Experience testing for entertainment content. Testronic is focused on staying ahead of industry needs, and we saw an opportunity to improve our services by creating a central hub, with everything and everyone in a single space. The physical consolidation enables a centrally managed core that takes advantage of the latest technology and allows access to our expert staff in one location. We see this as a big win for our customers.”

Testronic’s First Street facility includes its award-winning File-Based QC Lab, which was upgraded in 2012 to provide UltraViolet(tm) Interoperability Testing capabilities and related test automation services, including extended services and environments to support the evolving digital ecosystem from mastering to consumer distribution. The facility can securely receive and test digital content and all downstream deliverables for Over-the-Top (OTT) services, such as iTunes, Netflix and Hulu; supports website, web portal and content rights redemption testing; and houses upgraded Master QC testing suites. The move is set to be complete by November 15, 2013, and will not impact customer services or access.

“Even as our business grows and our service offerings expand, we are continually analyzing the way we work and consistently focus on ways of working smarter,” Gish concluded. “Testronic’s First Street Facility has been designed from the ground up to serve the needs of studios, content providers, and player manufacturers as the industry transitions to file-based workflows. This move to a centralized US hub is another step forward for our customers and for Testronic.”

Video Clarity Systems to Support Unique 4K/UHD Demo at SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition

ClearView Players to Enable Side-by-Side Comparison of 4K Processing and Scaling Technologies on Multiple Displays During the SMPTE 2013 Symposium

CAMPBELL, Calif. — Oct. 16, 2013 — Video Clarity Inc., provider of market-leading audio and video quality-assessment and analysis systems, today announced that its ClearView Extreme 4K video-quality analyzer and ClearView players will be used in a first-of-a-kind 4K/UHD demo room organized for the SMPTE 2013 Symposium titled “Next-Generation Imaging Formats: More, Faster, and Better Pixels.” The one-day symposium will take place on Oct. 21 in Hollywood, Calif., with the complementary 4K/UHD demo area remaining open through Oct. 23. The Symposium is offered in conjunction with the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition held Oct. 22-24.

Designed by Insight Media to showcase the growing maturity of 4K/UHD in professional and consumer markets, the demo will employ Video Clarity’s ClearView systems to feed source material for side-by-side comparisons of the latest High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoding format and 4K scaling/upconversion technologies from leading display and signal processing vendors.

“At Video Clarity we focus on developing solutions in advance of market needs, and we are proud to be one of the few companies with a full line of products that can address formats all the way up to 4K/60p,” said Adam Schadle, vice president of Video Clarity. “The ClearView Extreme 4K made its debut at the SMPTE Annual Conference a year ago, and since then our ClearView technology has been embraced by major networks and manufacturers, including most of the industry leaders taking part in this exciting 4K/UHD demo.”

Demonstrations will showcase various image processing and scaling engines and their ability to produce 4K/UHD content from lower-resolution sources, as well as the low bit rates and high quality enabled by the new HEVC codec when used to facilitate 4K content delivery. For the upconversion demos, all participants will show a “test reel” authored by Technicolor in a side-by-side comparison. The same content will be used to showcase the advantages of HEVC for 4K distribution.

Because Video Clarity’s ClearView players provide 100 percent uncompressed content, this event will give attendees a unique opportunity to make true apples-to-apples visual comparisons of upconverted and HEVC-encoded/decoded 4K content against the native 4K source material. The high quality of processed images is expected to show that neither the lack of native 4K content nor the challenge of delivering 4K content to the home need be an obstacle to broader adoption of 4K/UHD technologies, workflows, and distribution models.

The UHD/4K demonstration room will feature companies including Sony, Samsung, Canon, Quantel, Colorfront, Cisco, Elemental Technologies, Rovi, and Altera. Throughout the demo and on the exhibition floor, Video Clarity will offer hands-on demonstrations of the ClearView Extreme 4K analyzer and its ability to play back and compare two uncompressed 4K (3840 X 2160) sequences at up to 60 Hz in real time.

The Video Clarity system allows users to import and play A/V sequence files to compare processed video to original sources with new 8- and 10-bit high-resolution displays, and also to test for perceptual video quality. For assessment of both perceptual quality and the performance of video and audio, the ClearView product line includes three full-reference scoring methods or scales, all of which are based on algorithms that have been developed to estimate perceived quality in a precise way. The results of those algorithms are then correlated against correctly produced subjective data under ITU-R BT.500.12, yielding a perceptual measure of subjective quality.

More information about Video Clarity and the company’s products is available at www.videoclarity.com. Further details about SMPTE 2013 are available at www.smpte2013.org.

NUGEN Audio Updates ISL Inter-Sample True-Peak Limiter

In Response to Customer Requirements, New Version Supports 7.1 Surround Sound and True-Peak Limiting for Apple Mastered for iTunes

LEEDS, U.K. — Oct. 16, 2013 — NUGEN Audio, creator of intuitive tools for audio professionals, today announced the release of a significant update to ISL, its inter-sample true-peak limiter. In response to high customer demand from the film and game sectors, ISL is now available in a 7.1 surround channel configuration and adds the ability to limit true-peak audio according to the Apple Mastered for iTunes methodology.

ISL is part of NUGEN Audio’s range of innovative and intuitive loudness correction tools, which includes VisLM and LM-Correct. Providing complete control over peak levels in audio signals now from mono to 7.1, ISL measures inter-sample peaks and allows users to set the true-peak limit rather than the traditional threshold at which limiting begins. By measuring and correcting for inter-sample levels, ISL protects against distortion that can be introduced when codecs such as MP3 and AAC are applied downstream. With the new release, ISL’s true-peak detection algorithm now enables accurate assessment of audio and preparation of cleaner compressed files for Apple’s all-important iTunes(R) channel.

“With the adoption of 7.1 as a standard format for the forthcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, the game audio industry now joins the film audio market in its need for high-quality 7.1 audio tools. Since we have a large number of customers in both sectors, extending ISL with this additional functionality makes perfect sense,” said Jon Schorah, creative director, NUGEN Audio. “Support of Apple Mastered for iTunes is an essential new option for our customers in the music mastering and distribution sectors, since this is now recommended practice in the industry and a key factor in getting exposure for an artist or piece of music.”

Like all NUGEN Audio tools, ISL is intuitive to use and lets audio professionals mix with their ears, leaving ISL to ensure compliance with loudness standards. Designed for the transparent limiting of relatively dynamic high-quality audio, ISL can also be used to hard-limit and reduce dynamic range where required. Features include comprehensive dBTP metering, adjustable channel linking, support for audio formats from mono to 7.1, adjustable ballistics, color splits, and peak indicators. Using the standardized true-peak algorithms of ITU-R BS. 1770 and related standards such as Apple Mastered for iTunes, ISL is suitable for post-production and broadcast applications.

The latest version of ISL is available as a free update for existing users. More information about ISL and other NUGEN Audio products is at www.nugenaudio.com.

North Shore-LIJ Health System Upgrades to JVC GY-HM650 ProHD Cameras

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced North Shore-LIJ Health System, one of the largest nonprofit, secular hospital systems in the country, recently purchased three GY-HM650 ProHD cameras to upgrade its HD production efforts. Since the hospital system purchased its cameras in late May, its three-man media production team has been shooting HD footage for a variety of projects, from promotional videos on location to surgical procedures in the operating room.

Albert Ritondo, North Shore-LIJ assistant director for media productions, said the video team is often asked to be in the OR to document new procedures or provide footage for network television stations. As part of the public relations department, they also provide coverage of press conferences to share with local stations – and coverage has improved with the new JVC cameras.

“The 23x lens was a nice addition,” Ritondo explained. “It’s great for shooting press conferences from the back of the room. And the low-light shooting is a plus.”

The GY-HM650s are also being used extensively for a new 13-week series, Focus on Health, which will debut regionally on Cablevision and Verizon FiOS in November. According to Ritondo, the new series is replacing Medical Update, a basic multi-camera studio interview show. Focus on Health primarily features packages shot in the field.

JVC’s .MP4 native file recording means no transcoding is required for editing on North Shore-LIJ’s Sony Vegas NLE systems. Ritondo said the non-proprietary SDHC cards used to record footage on the GY-HM650 are not only convenient, but they are affordable enough that North Shore-LIJ uses them for archive.

With 16 hospitals across New York City, including five tertiary hospital complexes, North Shore-LIJ is one of New York’s largest employers. Its media productions team has been shooting in HD since 2005, purchased the new JVC ProHD cameras to replace its aging Sony HVR-Z7U HDV camcorders as part of a transition to a completely tapeless workflow.

Ritondo said the GY-HM650 delivers a significantly better image than the HDV cameras. “We’re really happy with the quality,” he added. “They’re great cameras – great images, very light, and easy to use.”

BHV Broadcast’s Syntax Bridge Wins “STAR” Award From Editors of TV Technology Europe

AMSTERDAM — Syntax Bridge, conceived and manufactured by BHV Broadcast and incorporating Microvideo’s powerful metadata processing engine, is the recipient of a 2013 STAR (Superior Technology Award Recipient) Award given by the editorial staff of TV Technology Europe magazine at the 2013 IBC convention.

The STAR is designed to celebrate and showcase technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. TV Technology Europe’s editor reviewed a variety of products, examined the technical applications and their overall contribution to the industry, and then chose 25 winners.

“STAR awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way,” said Mark Hallinger, Editor of TV Technology Europe. “This year in particular we also looked for smaller incremental improvements in established products, as these improvements generally reflect a manufacturer responding to customer input, a laudable thing.”

Syntax Bridge, the result of integrating BHV’s award-winning Syntax up-scaler with Microvideo’s well-proven HDB-300 VANC/VBI converter, was brought to market to address the ever-growing requirement for closed captions as part of the retention of metadata through the broadcast chain. Now broadcasters and facilities managers can enjoy Syntax’s unrivalled upscaling quality with full control of closed captions and other VBI data, benefitting from BHV’s artefact-free up-conversion and Microvideo’s comprehensive metadata processing in one compact and cost-effective package.

BHV Broadcast’s managing director, Julian Hiorns, stated “We are delighted to add another prestigious STAR award to our collection. Syntax Bridge is a unique collaboration of outstanding technologies from two companies that understand the need for superior artefact-free HD up-conversion with sub-titling capabilities. We are honoured that the editors of TV Technology Europe recognised its ability to fill a serious void in the industry and delighted to be working with Microvideo on this project.”

Added Hallinger, “The products selected help advance the industry—-some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products.”

Firehouse Productions Brings Extensive Riedel Artist Intercom System to MTV Video Music Awards

WUPPERTAL, Germany — Oct. 16, 2013 — Riedel Communications, provider of pioneering real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that Firehouse Productions used a substantial deployment of Riedel’s Artist digital matrix intercom systems to provide flexible broadcast-quality communications throughout the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Aug. 25 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“The VMAs are a very fast and dynamic show,” said Mark Dittmar, vice president of design and engineering at Firehouse Productions, the Emmy(R) Award-winning provider of sound for some of the entertainment industry’s most popular live music and awards shows. “Seven separate shows are put together to create the entire experience, and each of these shows has its own communication needs, as well as the need to communicate with the larger group. These demands make the Artist system, with its inherent usability and flexibility, a perfect choice.”

This year’s VMAs once again brought the industry’s biggest names to the stage, with performers including Drake, Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga. The show also featured the latest fashions as stars made their way down the red carpet at the host venue, the Barclays Center. During the show, the complement of Riedel equipment supporting communications included six Artist 64 frames, one Artist 128 frame, two Artist 32 frames, and 44 Artist control panels, along with 50 C3 beltpacks, and 49 BTR-800 beltpack systems.

Firehouse relies on the Artist intercom system, as well as the Riedel RockNet audio network, for nearly every live television show for which it provides sound and communications systems. The Artist digital matrix intercom system is based on a dual optical fiber ring to form a single large full-summing, non-blocking distributed matrix. While the system “feels” like a single unit, it has no limitations in the number of cross-points within or between the different nodes of the system. The Riedel solution allows for rapid setup of a flexible backbone that can be adapted easily to support each show’s unique communications requirements. During the VMAs, the communications crew accessed the Artist’s user-friendly yet powerful Director configuration and control software to make changes instantly, with the simple click of a mouse.

“At Firehouse we have been using the Riedel family of products for years, and they are an integral part of our operations,” added Dittmar. “In our opinion, working with the Artist intercom system is the only way to do a TV show. Its flexibility and reliability are unparalleled.”

Further information about Riedel and the company’s products is available at www.riedel.net.
