Kramer’s K-TV is Ready for Prime Time

Kramer Electronics is proud to announce the premiere of their new K-TV YouTube Channel videos, produced and filmed on location at Kramer Electronics’ new U.S. Headquarters. These videos will serve as tutorials for audiovisual professionals, giving them practical advice for solving common interfacing problems they may encounter when working with professional A/V products. Viewers will enhance their skill set, making them more efficient and confident at troubleshooting and fixing interfacing issues, while minimizing their reliance on Kramer technical support.

In the first two videos, Sales Support Engineering Manager Matt Kopin walks viewers through straightforward solutions to two common audiovisual interfacing headaches: Crosstalk Problems with Unshielded Twisted Pair Cabling and EDID-Related Audio Problems. Both issues are the subject of frequent tech support calls, yet each can be resolved effectively in the field by integrators and installers working on their own. The K-TV videos show precisely why these problems occur and explain in detail how to resolve both problems at the design and/or installation stages of a project.

The Crosstalk, EDID Audio, and subsequent K-TV videos are characterized by their high production values, with custom set pieces and studio-quality lighting and audio used throughout the series. Each video covers information that Kramer instructors also teach in the Kramer Certified Digitalist classes (KCD).

While Kramer Academy classes and road shows (taught by InfoComm’s 2013 Educator of the Year Malissa Dillman) have been extremely well-received, the company believes that its diverse selection of Academy classes should be accessible to everyone, even if they cannot attend in person. With Meyer Sound Constellation, San Francisco Exploratorium Looks to Educate Science of Sound

Billed by the New York Times as “the most important science museum to have opened since the mid-20th century,” San Francisco’s Exploratorium has recently opened its new multidisciplinary theatre, the Kanbar Forum. To fully support its programming diversity and inspire original works of multimedia art, the Exploratorium has become the first museum facility to install a Constellation® acoustic system, supplemented with a palette of other audio tools from Meyer Sound.

Installed in more than 50 venues worldwide, Constellation is a technology that allows venues to alter a room’s acoustics from an intimate recital hall to a vast cathedral with the push of a button. One of Kanbar Forum’s first programs to take advantage of Constellation is a live performance series named Resonance.

“We’re very excited about exploring the Constellation system’s potential for both artists and scientists,” says Nicole Minor, the Exploratorium’s manager of moving images. “We’ve only scratched the surface of what we can do with it. I expect we’ll be able to develop an entirely new breadth of work focused on both the art and the science of sound.”

Constellation has impressed both staff and visitors at the Exploratorium. “As part of his Full-Spectrum Science series, our Staff Scientist Ron Hipschman has been demonstrating Constellation in his talks,” says Minor. “Switching through the presets, he elicits ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ with just his voice and handclaps when the audience experiences the startling, yet natural acoustical effects.”

Constellation is built on Meyer Sound’s patented VRAS™ acoustical algorithm. The configuration in Kanbar Forum features 12 distributed microphones and more than 90 loudspeakers, including Stella-4C installation loudspeakers, MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers, UP-4XP 48 V loudspeakers, and MM-10XP 48V subwoofers.

The Kanbar Forum’s expansive audio toolbox also includes SpaceMap® multichannel panning, a technology that allows sound designers to fly sounds through space. SpaceMap is used in Fathom, a sound installation by Shane Myrbeck and Emily Shisko as part of the series Soundscapes.

A sound reinforcement loudspeaker system in the venue features UPQ-2P and MM-4XP loudspeakers, UPJ-1P and UPJunior™ VariO™ loudspeakers, and 600-HP subwoofers with a Galileo® loudspeaker management system.

The Exploratorium’s Executive Associate Director Ron Semper and renowned multimedia pioneer Kristina Woolsey conceived the audio systems in the Kanbar Forum. System design specifics were developed by Phil Bailey of systems integrator BBI Engineering, in consultation with theatrical design firm The Shalleck Collaborative.

“It took a great deal of effort by a lot of dedicated people to create a room that looks so deceptively simple, yet has the potential for such a variety of uses,” says Adam Shalleck, principal and president of The Shalleck Collaborative. “All parties worked together to ensure that the Kanbar’s technical and aesthetic elements fit in with the Exploratorium’s vision.”

While the Kanbar Forum stands out as a technology showcase, more than 120 additional Meyer Sound loudspeakers are installed in 11 other locations around the Exploratorium, including the Webcast Studio, the Bay Observatory Gallery, the Outdoor Exploratorium plaza, The Retail Store, conference rooms, and classrooms. These spaces feature 12 different loudspeaker models, ranging from the discreet MM-4XP loudspeaker to the 700-HP subwoofer.

Established by physicist and educator Frank Oppenheimer, the Exploratorium was originally located in San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts. The museum moved to expanded and technologically enhanced facilities at Piers 15 and 17 on the San Francisco waterfront in 2013. The new Exploratorium was designed by EHDD.

Barbie Live! Musical Tours Asia with Meyer Sound M’elodie

Mattel’s universally beloved Barbie™ and Ken™ dolls are performing across Asia in the stage production Barbie Live! For the young audience in this family show, sound designer Kai Harada has built a sound system based on the Meyer Sound M’elodie® line array loudspeaker. Equipment provider is Orlando, Fla.-based Show Systems.

“It’s a dance-heavy show,” says Harada, “so we needed a robust system that would cover large theatres or smaller arenas with exceptional clarity—but at levels appropriate for children’s ears. I knew that a M’elodie rig would give us those qualities, as well as the flexibility to adapt to different venues.”

The show uses up to 24 M’elodie loudspeakers that can be configured as either left-right or left-centre-right arrays, depending on the venue. The system also includes two 600-HP subwoofers, 16 UPJunior™ VariO™ loudspeakers for foldback, delay, and fill, 10 UPM-1P loudspeakers for front fill, and eight MM-4 loudspeakers for offstage foldback. A Galileo® loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 408 and two Galileo 616 processors supplies system drive and optimization.

“From my experience, M’elodies are exactly what shows like this need,” says Harada. “They are highly controllable, with excellent vertical focusing. They are also reliable, and that comfort factor is critical.”

Harada’s long-time associate Douglas Graves assisted with show design and the initial system alignment in Singapore. Traveling with the tour are FOH engineer Tristan Jackson and systems tech Andrea Espinosa.

“Galileo gives us the option to make design changes from city to city very easily,” says Frank Snipes, vice president of Show Systems, who coordinated tour audio logistics. “Coupled with self-powered loudspeakers, Galileo allows the road crew to reconfigure the system as needed, with absolutely minimum hassle.”

The tour carries a DiGiCo SD9 console with MADI-linked dual Pro Tools systems for audio playback. Cast principals sing live using Shure UR-1 wireless bodypack transmitters with Countryman B6 omni microphones. Dialogue tracks for most Asian shows are pre-recorded in the native language. Actors on stage mime the dialogue, staying in sync by following low-volume English tracks played on the MM-4 foldback loudspeakers.

Barbie Live! is produced by EMS Entertainment, in association with Mattel Live Entertainment. Opening in Singapore, the tour includes Thailand and China, followed by Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand through 2014. North American and European tours are in development for later in 2014.

Meyer Sound-Equipped FutureWorks Studio in India Receives Dolby Premier Studio Certification

Indian postproduction company FutureWorks has upgraded its flagship Studio A facility in the historic Rajkamal Kalamandir Studios in Mumbai. Featuring a Meyer Sound cinema loudspeaker system, Studio A has become the first Dolby Atmos facility in India to be awarded Dolby Premier Studio Certification.

“With the Studio A refit, we challenged ourselves to come up with the best sounding room we could,” says Gaurav Gupta, managing director of FutureWorks. “We decided that we wanted to achieve Dolby Premier Studio Certification, and for that we needed loudspeakers of remarkable clarity and response.”

In evaluating FutureWorks’ equipment options, Gupta kept returning to a positive experience he had several years ago with a Meyer Sound cinema system at Skywalker Sound in Nicasio, Calif.

“I was blown away by its accuracy,” recalls Gupta. “Ultimately, it was clear that a Meyer Sound system was the number one choice, both technically and from a business point-of-view, in terms of what our customers require.”

Studio A’s monitoring system includes five Acheron® 80 screen channel loudspeakers and 37 HMS-10 cinema surround loudspeakers, complemented by four X-800C cinema subwoofers and two 500-HP subwoofers. System optimization is handled by a Galileo® loudspeaker management system with two Galileo 616 processors. Pondicherry-based consultancy Sound Wizard advised FutureWorks on the upgrade.

“The reaction from our clients has been absolutely fantastic,” says Gupta. “They love how the room sounds, and the response and accuracy they are able to get from the new equipment. It is clear that Meyer Sound represents the future for cinema sound.”

Founded in 2007, FutureWorks provides complete postproduction services to worldwide clients, including a number of Hollywood studios. FutureWorks has studios in Mumbai and Chennai.

PixelFLEX Introducing New 12mm High-Resolution LED Video Curtain at LDI 2013

PixelFLEX, the leading provider of flexible and lightweight LED video screens, will be introducing a new 12mm high-resolution curtain video panel at LDI 2013 in November (Booth 2321). With the introduction of its 12mm panel, PixelFLEX continues to heighten the industry standard by taking flexible LED screens to another price and performance level.

Jesup Elementary School Welcomes First Students With Hitachi Interactive Projectors and Classroom Technology

WAYNE COUNTY, Georgia, October 14, 2013 — Opening its doors to students for the first time on Thursday, August 8, Jesup Elementary School in Wayne County, Georgia, was fully prepared. With Hitachi CP-AW2519N projectors for each of its 54 classrooms, Jesup is an example of successful interaction between integrators, architects, and school designers.

“I’ve been working with the Wayne County School System for the last 18 months,” said Daniel Cooper, Georgia Account Executive for Troxell Communications (who sold and installed the projectors). “The school was designed with budget and technology needs in mind.”

The Hitachi CP-AW2519N, deployed in every classroom, is an interactive ultra-short-throw projector that doesn’t give off shadows or vibrations from the ceiling. A dry-erase board acts as a traditional whiteboard as well as a surface for the projector. This functional solution saves space and cuts project costs by roughly 30 percent.

“Including speakers, equipment, installation and labor, we were able to equip each classroom for a total cost of $2,100,” Mr. Cooper said. “The installation was very clean and all the wires are concealed behind the built-in wall plates.”

“The projectors have definitely enhanced the appearance of the classrooms,” said Earl Watson, Technology Specialist at Jesup Elementary School, “but even better is the PJ Man software that allows me to monitor bulb hours and projectors left on inadvertently after school.”

The CP-AW2519N 3LCD projectors feature 2,500 ANSI lumens brightness and WXGA 1600×1200 resolution.

“When it comes to building a new school, interaction between the technology department and the architect at the earliest opportunity is critical,” said Mr. Cooper. “This collaboration makes installations like this one organized, affordable and seamless.”

SADiE Helps Producer Steve Portnoi Capture Elgar

Producer and engineer Steve Portnoi used a SADiE LRX2 to produce Elgar’s The Apostles – a double CD that was recently awarded a much coveted Gramophone Classical Music Award.

Portnoi’s recording of the Hallé Chorus and Orchestra, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, won the 2013 Gramophone Award in the Choral category. Earlier this year, the CD also won BBC Music Magazine’s Recording of the Year and Choral Recording of the Year Awards.

“I use the LRX 2 at every stage in the process,” explains Portnoi. “I record both the live concert in the Bridgewater Hall and the rehearsal direct to the LRX. We want to keep the excitement that you only get at a live performance, so what ends up on the CD is essentially the concert recording. The rehearsals are only used to cover points where audience noise is obtrusive, or where there are minor blemishes, which could become annoying on repeated listening.”

Portnoi’s LRX configuration is two mic input cards, giving him 32 mic amps, and an AES card which he uses to connect to external devices and to give him extra track inputs for large projects such as this. Using a 16 channel A to D increases his track count to a possible 48 – he used 44 tracks on The Apostles.

“There were a lot of elements in this recording,” Portnoi says. “Not only did we have a full symphony orchestra to contend with, but we also had two choirs, six soloists, and for the first time on a recording of this work, a separate Apostles chorus, not to mention an offstage Shofar (a Hebrew horn).

Back at his studio, Portnoi used the LRX to create his stereo mix.

“For such a small box, the LRX is a remarkably powerful mixer, enabling me to create the sound-world that I require, as well as matching the sound of the empty hall to the concert mix,” he says. “Also, any shift in perspective of the soloists can be smoothed out using the LRX automation.”

Any patch editing is also carried out on the LRX. At this stage Portnoi uses Izotope RX2 to remove some of the noises inherent in a live performance, meaning that he can use less of the rehearsal patches and more of the live performance.

Portnoi has been a Sadie user since the early 80s and upgraded to Sadie 6 at the first opportunity, having helped with the Beta testing. “Of course, I also use Sadie for the final, mastering stage. Sound Suite gives me full PQ and DDP mastering facilities.”

Gramophone Magazine described The Apostles as ‘a set not to be missed’ and reviewer Andrew Aschenbach drew particular attention to Steve Portnoi’s production, which he described as ‘astutely balanced’, ‘thrilling’ and with a ‘colossal dynamic range’. This is the second of the great Elgar Oratorios that Portnoi has recorded for the Hallé Label and the second time his efforts have been rewarded with a Gramophone Award.

DPA Microphones Are Chosen For New Jazz Venue The Standard

Danish Jazz legend, producer and internationally acclaimed pianist Niels Lan Doky has teamed up with Claus Meyer, co-owner of the Michelin-starred noma restaurant, to launch The Standard, a new Jazz club in Copenhagen that includes two bars and three world-class restaurants.

Officially opened on October 3rd, 2013, The Standard’s audio equipment list highlights another famous Danish name – DPA Microphones.

“We have between 10 and 15 DPA microphones permanently in the venue and we will be hiring in more when larger ensembles are playing,” says Niels Lan Doky, who is musical director of the new venue. “When our stage was completed in September we conducted a series of rehearsals and tests on site with the DPA team to determine exactly which microphones we needed. The list, which is exclusively DPA, includes various d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and a selection of d:dicate™ 4011 and 4006 Recording Microphones.”

As The Standard features vocalists as well as instrumentalists, Doky and his team have also invested in a new DPA d:facto™ Vocal Microphone that will be made available to every singer performing at the club.

“We are very excited about this microphone, which is the perfect microphone for us,” Doky says. “Our highly experienced house sound engineer, Jonas Nakel, tried it and was very impressed because it has the trademark qualities of DPA, coupled with the specific needs of a vocal mic.”

The choice of DPA Microphones reflects Doky’s philosophy that, at The Standard, it is the quality of the performance, the music that emanates from the stage, the sound of the room and the overall experience shared by the musicians and audience that matters, not the reputation or image of the artist performing.

“We are aiming to capture the timeless values that define jazz and that the greatest artists in jazz have in common,” Doky explains. “What counts is the quality of the music performed, so we will be working with incoming artists to help them prepare and enhance their shows in order to go beyond themselves and reach new levels of artistry. We also have a great sounding room with top level equipment and this is a very important part of the equation because although we are creating a classic jazz atmosphere, we are also ensuring that the room’s equipment and acoustics reflect professional recording studio standards so that we can give our audiences an exceptional sonic experience.”

Doky adds that choosing DPA was an easy decision for him to make as he already owns a selection of DPA 4011 and 4021 microphones that he uses for all his concerts and recordings.

“I have never done a recording without a large selection of DPAs,” he says. “They are the most transparent and precise microphones I know because what you put in is exactly what you get out at the other end of the chain. In the old days people didn’t always appreciate this as they were used to hearing the transformed and sometimes aesthetically altered sound that many other microphones produced. However, in our increasingly technically sophisticated world, especially in the world of A/V production, it is very important to get as close as possible to a natural sound. I believe that was DPA’s vision from the start and I am glad that they have stubbornly stuck to it.”

Doky has an elegant touch when it comes to studio work and his recordings are renowned for their superior technical quality. His latest album, Scandinavian Standards, will be released on Parlophone to tie in with the opening of the new club, which will host an album launch party.

“Like all my albums, Scandinavian Standards was recorded using DPA microphones,” Doky says. “I play piano and, given how hard it is to record and amplify that instrument, I don’t think the quality of my recordings would have been possible without the clarity and precision of my loyal travel companions, my DPA microphones.”

The opening of The Standard brings the worlds of gastronomy and music into close orbit and focuses attention on Copenhagen’s unique jazz history, which dates back to the 1950’s when many American ex-patriot jazz legends settled there.

“We take deep pride in Copenhagen’s jazz legacy and we want to reflect it in The Standard’s creative choices and decisions whenever possible,” Niels Lan Doky says. “We will be looking to bring in dynamic, vibrant and engaged jazz artists who know how to be daring and courageous without compromising integrity and quality.”

Iconyx Makes it Clear for Knollwood Baptist Church

Winston, Salem, NC – October 2013… In February of 1957, a group of about 80 faithful founded Knollwood Baptist Church, meeting at a local funeral hall until their first chapel was completed in July. More than half a century later, Knollwood’s congregation numbers in the thousands, and their 1000-seat sanctuary offers multiple services each week.

The sanctuary’s modernistic design is truly impressive, with its soaring peaked ceilings, abundant glass, and polished surfaces. But that same design has long been problematic for the church’s technical staff, who have struggled to achieve intelligibility and even coverage in the hall. As Dan Wood, President of High Point, NC-based Church Interiors Audio Video (CIAv) explains, the sanctuary’s recent renovation was an ideal opportunity to finally tackle the audio issues.

“It’s a beautiful space, but very challenging acoustically, and the original sound system just couldn’t provide adequate coverage,” says Wood. “Church Interiors was undertaking a major renovation, and it was a perfect time to rethink their audio system.”

The room’s airy, open architecture presented some significant challenges — particularly the chancel area’s wide design. “The chancel platform extends far into the room, and there was no possibility to hang an array or cluster without impacting line of sight,” says Wood. “Our only viable option was to locate the speakers behind all the open microphones — there was simply no other place to put them.

Consistent coverage was another major concern. Areas on the room’s extremities and up in the balcony suffered from poor intelligibility. Since the balcony is also home to the house mix position, this was particularly important to address.

With no option to substantially alter the room’s architectural and acoustical character, the solution clearly had to be found within the audio system design. With this in mind, CIAv selected Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steered column array loudspeakers, placing a single IC24-R-II on either side of the chancel platform.

“The Iconyx allowed us to create multiple sound beams and steer them to the seats on the floor and balcony levels, while steering them away from the walls and windows and other reflective surfaces,” says Wood. “It also enabled us to provide focused coverage to the mix position up in the balcony.”

Wood reports response to the new system has been overwhelmingly positive. “With just two Iconyx columns, we’ve got consistent coverage and intelligibility everywhere in the room.”
