First Reformed Church Receives Sound Upgrade with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression Consoles

LANDIS, North Carolina – The First Reformed Church in the town of Landis, North Carolina has a strong connection to its membership and recently added two HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 3 digital consoles to deliver an even more dynamic audio experience for its congregation. One Si Expression 3 is used for the main 400-seat auditorium, while the other is in the smaller 200-seat auditorium.

“Our past sound equipment does not even come close to the Si Expression,” said the church’s Technical Manager, Adam Combs. “Our old console kept breaking down and I just can’t allow that to happen anymore during Sunday service.”

HARMAN’s dbx Keeps Youth Organizations on Top at Tabernacle of Praise

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – James Lacey III is a volunteer audio engineer for Tabernacle of Praise, a nondenominational Fort Worth, Texas ministry. Known as “Fort Worth’s Church”, Tabernacle of Praise (TOP) supports two youth ministries, KIDZ on TOP for first to sixth graders and TOP AGENTS (Army of God Equipping New Teens with Salvation) for seventh through twelfth graders. In support of these youth programs HARMAN’s dbx recently donated three 1066 Compressor/Limiter/Gates for use in their youth facility’s “The Bridge” audio system.

Lacey has been an audio enthusiast since he was young, and now takes great pride and enjoyment in passing along his skills and enthusiasm to a new generation of budding sound engineers. “A big reason I got into audio is from being a performing artist and asking the front of house engineers about what they were doing at the console and how it affected the way things sounded.” Eventually Lacey learned enough to become a sound engineer and has been volunteering at TOP for the past five years. “With KIDZ on TOP and TOP AGENTS, the ministries’ youth are now doing the same thing I did when I first became curious about live sound – they’re intrigued by what a mixing console and all the lights flashing on the outboard gear rack! It’s a great feeling to know that positive impacts on the youth can happen even through the use of audio equipment!”

With the addition of the dbx 1066 to the ministry’s audio system, which already had a dbx 266XL Compressor/Gate in place, they now have more of an opportunity than ever to learn about the essential elements of dynamics processing and hear how they relate to worship sound. The 266XL and 1066 units are applied as inserts to eight vocal and instrument subgroups on the mixing console, and used for gating on vocals, drums and percussion. The 266XL is primarily used on the lead vocal channels while the 1066s handle the other vocal and instrument subgroups.

Lacey has extensive experience with dbx, noting that most of the venues where he performed earlier in his career used analog mixing consoles with dbx dual compressor/limiters of some type, especially on vocals – and in the ones that didn’t, “it was really a challenge to run sound. I wanted to make sure that I got our new 1066s in place as soon as possible so our youth could hear what it’s like to achieve the best mix possible, a really balanced mix with clarity and dynamics where all the vocals and instruments sit perfectly in place.”

Every FOH engineer has their favorite features about any particular piece of gear and the dbx 1066 is no exception. For Lacey the Over Easy control “is a dream” for transparently smoothing out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels. Sometimes he’ll use it on vocals like an instant “custom” overall setting so he can just concentrate on the rest of the mix. “Over Easy is a great feature that, to me, you can apply on just about everything. In fact it makes getting a good sound so easy it’s almost like cheating! That’s because good sound doesn’t ‘fight fair,’ especially in a live setting and sometimes you just have to bare-knuckle it and have tools that can get the job done quickly and effectively.”

For other applications Lacey notes that the 1066’s flexibility is in order, and that there are always cases where some hard knee compression or manual adjustments have to be made to tame and balance the mix. “In some cases, the live mix seems to have a mind of its own and changes its personality at a moment’s notice. With the 266XL and 1066s in place, you can deal with these sonic surprises much more easily, and achieve a great mix under any circumstances.”

PixelFLEX LED Curtains Add Visual Dynamic to India.Arie SongVersation Tour

Four-time Grammy award winner India.Arie has returned to the music scene after a four year, self-imposed hiatus and is currently traveling the country on a 12 week, 30-city tour for her 2013 album debut, SongVersation. PixelFLEX’s flexible, affordable and sharp LED curtains are giving India.Arie’s tour a different and updated set of visuals than what fans experienced during her last performances, including high-quality video, effects and colorful backdrop illumination.

Every venue set up is the same throughout the tour, consisting of 2 20mm 4×8 panels in the center to create an 8×8 screen with the remaining 2 20mm 4×8 panels hanging on either side with a two to three foot gap in between.

Moving forward, Allen plans to utilize PixelFLEX video panels every chance he gets and is excited to use the company’s higher resolution screens – being unveiled at the LDI Show in Las Vegas in a few weeks – not only for future tours but for smaller venues as well.

Holt Renfrew Partners With Gridcast Media Inc. To Create Engaging 29 Ft. High NanoLumens LED Display For Re-Design Of Toronto Yorkdale Store

Holt Renfrew, a chain of high-end Canadian department stores specializing in select luxury brands and designer boutiques, has partnered with Gridcast Media, a Canadian visual communications consulting firm, to create one of the largest indoor LED display implementations within the Canadian retail industry.

Gridcast Media partnered with NanoLumens, an award winning leader in custom LED display technology, and Dot2Dot, exclusive Canadian distributor of the Scala Content Management software, to design and develop this “one-of-a-kind” digital canvas for Holt Renfrew. The façade reflects the unique architectural styling envisioned in the re-design of the Yorkdale store. Gridcast’s vision for the project was to create a living architectural piece.
The new LED display stands at the front of Holt Renfrew’s re-designed store in Yorkdale Mall and features six 29 foot tall by 4 foot wide panels displaying the latest fashion trends in dynamic imagery to wow passers-by and to welcome them into the store. The layout design provides Holt Renfrew with a creative platform to display digital content on each individual column or content spanning across the entire façade. The displays feature a sharp 6 mm pixel pitch to give people outside and inside of the store a sharp, crisp image. The entire display features over 1.5 million LED packages.

Sales Of Unified Communications Products Grew 94% In 2013, Stampede Reports

With more than a month still left to go in the current sales year, Stampede Presentation Products, Inc. today announced that sales of its Unified Communications products grew by 94% in 2013 — a record-shattering rate of growth that will only continue to explode in 2014 and 2015. Indeed, according to Stampede President & COO Kevin Kelly, Stampede is committing itself to building an entire 21st century mix of products that are built around the concept of ‘The Internet of Things.’

“In order to remain the industry’s largest supplier of high value added ProAV solutions, we must take the steps required to build out our future product lines in ways that meet the needs of an increasingly Internet based, web centric ProAV customer,” Kelly emphasized today. “We have created a specialist team that is focused on meeting this goal. And we’ve formed a Tech Support team with AV, PC, Network and VC expertise to support the sales efforts of the specialist team. I believe this is a first for our industry.”

Currently, according to Kelly, Stampede is offering a first generation of ‘Internet of Things’ product portfolio centered around audio solutions from Phoenix Audio and Clear One; visual solutions from Sony, MediaPointe, and Vaddio; and software from Vidyo, Bluejeans, and ChorusCall. “In highly customized and integrated offerings these audio, visual, and software solutions are delivering high value added Unified Communications capabilities to a growing number of end user customers,” Kelly explained. “But it is just the beginning of where we as an industry are headed.”

Slovak National Theatre Upgrades to IC Live

Bratislava, Slovikia – November 2013… Completed in 1886, the Slovak National Theatre was designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Since 1920, the ornate, 1,000-seat building has been the seat of the Slovak National Theatre opera and ballet ensembles. The hall has also hosted performances by some of the world’s top opera and ballet talents.

Its acoustics, however, have come under more scrutiny. The room’s very short reverberation time, while acceptable for opera, doesn’t suit orchestral performances. Its narrow stage faces a long auditorium where the rear seats are 75 ft (22 m) away. Uneven sound coverage confronted its numerous balconies.

A subtle sound reinforcement system, effectively invisible to the audience, was needed, and the theater approached MediaTech, Bratislava’s largest pro audio company.

EASE analysis led to them recommending the IC Live digitally steerable system by Renkus-Heinz. Its clear, uncolored musical sound, the ability to steer multiple sound beams into specific areas of the audience offered precisely the solution that was needed. And its slim, low profile design — complete with a custom paint finish – complemented the theatre’s décor perfectly.

The system includes extra reverb for orchestral shows via a TC Electronics M6000, with a Yamaha PM5D console linked directly to the IC Live system via CobraNet. “The audience had to be unaware of sound reinforcement,” says MediaTech’s project manager Miroslav Paciga. “IC Live allowed us to achieve that subtle effect while being visually unnoticeable.”
