Sound Devices Latest Firmware Adds Additional Inputs to 664 Production Mixer

Unit offers 12 Analog Inputs and 16 Recording Tracks

REEDSBURG, WI, NOVEMBER 5, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, continues its tradition of adding significant features to its products through regular firmware updates. The latest update, Version 2.00 for its flagship 664 Production Mixer, unlocks six additional line-level inputs on this already powerful field mixer. The 664 now offers 12 analog inputs and 16-track recording without requiring the CL-6 Input Controller.

Sound Devices 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, and input trim control. Version 2.0 firmware provides access to six additional, menu-controlled, line-level inputs for a total of 12 inputs. Inputs 7-12 appear on TA3 connectors shared with the direct outputs. Inputs 1 and 6 can be set to accept AES3 or AES42 for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.

With version 2.00, the 664 can record 16 track files, which include all 12 inputs plus its four outputs, without requiring the CL-6 Input Controller. The CL-6 continues to be an important accessory for users requiring hardware fader control of inputs 7 through 12. Firmware revision 2.00 also brings additional LCD metering modes to support the expanded input capability. Three menu-set metering modes are selectable from the front panel meter button. Meter modes offer combinations of input and output levels.

The 664 records 16-track monophonic or polyphonic broadcast WAV files or stereo MP3 files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All inputs and outputs are individually selectable for recording, and feature up to three seconds of record pre-roll. With its dual card slots, the 664 can record content to either or both cards simultaneously, with the ability to assign different tracks to each memory card. With cards not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD display when starting a recording. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32.

The 664 offers greater flexibility and ease-of-use with its “LCD Daylight Display” mode, which incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme and solid-bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. In addition, it includes a high-precision, Ambient-based timecode generator/reader for multi-camera and double-system sound applications.

Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) Savors the Moment at Inaugural Life is Beautiful Festival

When the first-ever Life Is Beautiful music, art and food festival, took over 15 square blocks of downtown Las Vegas on Oct. 26th and 27th, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS) was on location providing frequency coordination for the more than 80 musical acts, performers and media outlets throughout the two-day celebration.

In its inaugural year, the Life is Beautiful festival featured a diverse lineup of musical acts from a variety of genres including The Killers, Kings of Leon, Beck, Vampire Weekend, Imagine Dragons, Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, Jurassic 5, Danny Brown, Childish Gambino Pretty Lights, STS9 and Empire of the Sun, to name a few.

“PWS was happy to be part of this new festival, and while we have extensive experience in providing frequency coordination for events of this size and scope, it was not without its challenges,” says Jim Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “There was quite a bit to consider logistically, because the festival was situated over a large area right in the middle of downtown Las Vegas near Fremont Street.”

Jim Van Winkle and John Garrido from PWS arrived two days prior to the event in order to conduct a frequency sweep to identify all frequencies in the area. A total of four PWS staff members were onsite during the two-day celebration to monitor and ensure that any potential issues were kept to a minimum. With six stages and more than 520 frequencies, PWS utilized its proprietary Intermodulation Analysis Software (IAS) and spectrum analyzers to determine occupied bandwidth and track interference sources, ensuring that both the musical acts and attending media were on a safe frequency, once located.

PWS worked closely with Another Planet, the production company for the festival, and all the stage managers, before and during the event to have as much information as possible about the wireless requirements needed by all of the performers and media. PWS also established and coordinated frequencies for the PA companies, including VER Audio and Solotech, to use for the entire weekend.

“Whenever working on an event of this magnitude, there is always a media presence; making sure that they are on the correct frequency is crucial, so that there is no interference with the musical acts,” adds Van Winkle. “You always have to expect last minute changes to arise but our crew works really hard to address these as they come up. The final result turned out great and we look forward to being part of the festival next year.”

In addition to managing frequency coordination, PWS’ Domed Helicals as well as its original Helical Antennas, were onsite for the festival. The PWS Domed Helical Antenna boasts the highly successful circular polarization configuration, pioneered by the company’s original Helical, but with the unit sealed within a unique new compact “domed” design.

In addition to the GX-8 Combiners that are already a part of several of the bands’ rigs, PWS also had extra GX-8 Combiners on-hand in case the need arose. One of the musical acts was so impressed with the GX-8 that the group decided to use the product for its next show. PWS’ GX series of combiners, the GX-4 and GX-8, offer selectable high and low output settings as well as above unity gain on output. Helpful for very anemic transmitters, the combiners in the GX series are considered RF limiters because of their proprietary Automatic Level Control (ALC) circuitry.

HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 Speeds Up Training Times for Royal Holloway University of London

EGHAM, United Kingdom – The Student Union at the Royal Holloway University of London host a variety of events at a multifunctional venue, which include live music, clubs, conferences, theaters, trade shows, etc. Its technical crew is responsible for approximately 10 different productions a week, and recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 in order to train more students in front of house (FOH) audio mixing.

Crabby Joe’s Makes A Bold Statement With 165” 3×3 Videowall Installed By Advanced

The owners of the newly renovated Crabby Joe’s at 276 Dundas St. in London, Ontario knew they needed to go big with their AV system to draw guests fromlocal competition. A videowall was their top choice for displaying major events and multiple events at once, so they went to the AV professionals at Advanced to design and install the biggest videowall that would fit.

According to Advanced General Manager of Systems Integration Omar Prashad, the installation gives Crabby Joe’s a sophisticated multi-display solution that is simple to control.

“At our initial meeting Crabby Joe’s owner Howard Pennell told us that he wanted something that would blow his guests away as soon as they walk through the door,” Prashad said. “We determined that the best solution was to build a 3×3 video wall that would allow them to show a single video feed or all six available video feeds at once.

“There was enough room for us to create a 165” videowall composed of nine 55-inch HD Orion display panels, and we installed a simple-to-use Crestron system to give them fast, easy control over which video feed plays on which display. We configured the videowall to allow for all nine panels to show a single feed, or to show the main feed on the four upper-left most displays while each of the remaining five displays can show the other five independent video feeds.”

To ensure the installation went according to plan and that the customer would be 100 percent satisfied with the result, the team at Advanced installed, configured and calibrated the videowall at their warehouse before the real on-site installation even began.

“Monitors need to be color calibrated,” Prashad said, “and LED LCD technology tends to work through most of its color shift in the first 10 hours. We like to get every installation right the first time, so we rig up each videowall we build in our warehouse and make sure everything is working and calibrated before the customer ever sees it. The last thing we want is to start hanging panels in the restaurant and find that one of them is defective. This pre-installation testing process allows us to sort out issues so the customer doesn’t have to.”
Pennell knew that not every AV company can pull off this type of installation. After deciding he wanted a videowall for the new restaurant’s grand re-opening, he researched companies in the area that specialize in large, complex AV systems, and found that Advanced had the experience and expertise he was looking for.

“I wanted the guest experience to be unforgettable, and I wanted the videowall to make a statement to our guests. Advanced delivered everything I could have hoped for, and I hope to work with them again in the future,” Pennell said. He added that while it wasn’t the lowest-cost option, the final effect of the videowall can’t be underestimated.
“The cost of the videowall was worth the effect that it has on passersby and guests once they enter the restaurant,” he said. “We could have simply hung a bunch of TVs on the wall, but this system has as much value as a marketing tool as an actual video display. London has the highest concentration of restaurants in Ontario, so we’re always looking for anything we can do or provide that guests can’t get elsewhere. The ‘WOW” factor when you see this videowall is amazing, and it really is the best place in town for people to catch all their favorite sports. People see it when they walk by our window, and then they bring their friends the next time they come in. Plus it’s much easier to use and stay organized with the Crestron system than having nine more separate TVs.”

The system relies on the amazing Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software to manage its large-format, dynamic and ever changing content that is presented over 664 integrated LG LED flat panel displays.

An ecosystem of technology partners bring The Big Picture to life

The project was managed by Suntec Singapore working with an expert team of Asia-based technology partners including global automation controls specialist, Honeywell who were appointed master systems integrators for the project.

“We understood Suntec Singapore’s vision to be a convention and exhibition centre of the future,” said Ananda Seshadri, regional marketing leader at Honeywell. “We leveraged the latest technologies to help Suntec achieve their business goals. The big digital screen with the application of WATCHOUT certainly has the ‘wow factor’ for visitors and Suntec exhibitors use it as a fantastic advertisement placement.’

LG acted as systems engineers to design and analyse the system and manage subcontractors such as ACETEL Korea.

“ACETEL were responsible for supplying Dataton WATCHOUT for The Big Picture as well as designing and installing the visual display system according to LG and Honeywell’s requirements,” explains Jeong-Mok Byun, team lead of visual solution division at ACETEL.

Big pixel display

The Big Picture is designed to support a resolution of 32,051 pixels wide by 7,941 pixels high, which is 84 times the resolution of HD (1 UHD = 4HD).

The Big Picture acts as a standalone exhibit allowing a combination of multiple media such as still images, animations and video clips to be shown at the same time, or a single media image in native format to be displayed over the entire wall.

Interactive features are integrated with RFID tracking systems and sensors on the escalators located just in front of The Big Picture. With these integrated sensory systems, The Big Picture can be adapted to display welcome messages, or show specialised content alongside riders on the escalator from levels 1 to 3.

Mr Oh, Technical Manager, LGE Singapore explains: “LG worked on the design of the visual display system and it evolved to be the largest HD LED screen in the world. Early in the design phase, we discussed with Dataton the possibility of the project being the largest HD LED screen and on finding out that it could, we selected WATCHOUT as the main multi-image display and presentation system.

“The Big Picture is controlled and operated by three major subsystems which are the video wall, playback, integration and control. Playback manages content and the principle of the design is to support multi-display and 4K images from 21 WATCHOUT display servers, serving 84 full HD outputs.

“The integration and control system acts to control The Big Picture and servers, turning them on or off as required. It also manages playback where a part of a show at a specific time can be selected or it can be used to manage interactive content.”

Mesmerising audiences through dynamic content

Content for the system can be updated according to the exhibition taking place. It also uses a variety of ultra-high resolution content from Suntec Singapore and its advertisers.

Lasanthi Bandara, manager, audio-visual technology & content at Suntec Singapore explained: “WATCHOUT is being used to primarily display content on all 664 screens seamlessly. Content is also designed, animated, and produced within the WATCHOUT system itself.

“There was no other feasible and scalable technology available in the market that could enable us to create such high definition display. WATCHOUT was selected because of its primary capability to display synchronised content on multiple screens,” added Bandara.

Bernard Ng, digital creative curator at Suntec Singapore explained: “Audio, video and graphic content are used together to create spectacular showcases and presentations on The Big Picture. The design challenge here is simply the immense size of our entire screen. Producing and rendering videos and animations at this scale is incredible but potentially time consuming. However, production time is greatly reduced by maximising WATCHOUT’s ability in allowing us to create amazing content directly within the system itself.

“For content management, WATCHOUT allows content to be stored and managed in media containers with auxiliary timelines. This allows my team to manually organise and manage content according to scheduling and requirements.”

Smart building design

The system is designed to be integrated with other building systems and to bring in return on investment.

“The initial plan was not to build the largest HD LED screen in the world. The Level 1 of our building was initially designed as the lobby entrance to our venue and following a major modernisation programme, the idea of having a HD LED screen was realised in the form of The Big Picture. The size of The Big Picture was in accordance to our overall design of venue entrance. We are very delighted that an unexpected design step turned into the largest HD LED screens in the world,” said Arun Madhok, CEO of Suntec Singapore.

Measuring project success

Suntec Singapore measures the success of The Big Picture from its reception on multiple social media platforms tagging Suntec Singapore as their check-in location, newspaper and media coverage featuring The Big Picture as part as well as filmography interests. Operationally there are benefits such as reduced costs and increased advertising revenue that assist the centre in being profitable and sustainable.

Daktronics Redesigns Audio System at University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium with HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays

MADISON, Wisconsin – In time for the football season, Daktronics recently redesigned the video board and audio system at the University of Wisconsin’s famed Camp Randall Stadium. Home to the Wisconsin Badgers football team, the stadium seats 80,321 people and is the 41st largest stadium in the world. To match the intensity of some of college football’s most dedicated fans, Daktronics selected HARMAN’s JBL VLA Series line array loudspeakers for the new audio system.

“We modeled different designs from many different manufacturers before deciding to use the VLA loudspeakers. No other system could deliver a confident outcome besides the VLA design,” according to David Sturzenbecher of Daktronics.

The new system consists of 18 JBL VLA301H loudspeakers, 14 JBL VLA 601H loudspeakers, three JBL PD743 loudspeakers, two JBL PD5212 loudspeakers, 12 AWC82 loudspeakers and 21 AW295 loudspeakers. Four line arrays cover west, south and east seating areas, with many fill speakers covering the north seats and upper seat fills.

“The design of the stadium presented many challenges including a very deep under-balcony area that was shadowed from the main display. This area required a completely separate submix in order to blend properly with the main system,” Sturzenbecher added.

With system design/commissioning assistance from Shay McElwain of the University of Wisconsin Athletics department, Draktonics successfully completed this massive overhaul of the stadium’s system.

“After some system optimization over the first two events, the system is currently operating extremely well and has received many positive reviews,” Sturzenbecher concluded.
