Nexidia Wins NewBay Media Product Innovation Award

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Nov. 12, 2013 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today congratulates SMPTE fellow Chris Cookson, president of Sony Pictures Technologies, on receiving the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award, the only individual honor awarded during the 65th Primetime Engineering Emmy(R) Awards held Oct.23 in Hollywood.

“We couldn’t be more pleased that Chris has been so aptly honored for his fine work in the industry,” said SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange. “While his contributions to SMPTE’s standards work have been tremendous, his leadership extends into development and strategic implementation of numerous key technology advances.”

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award honors a living individual whose ongoing contributions have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering.

Cookson has earned three Emmy Awards and holds more than 50 U.S. patents. At Sony Pictures Technologies, he both oversees the development and implementation of the studio’s technology policy, and processes and serves as Sony Pictures’ chief liaison with other Sony Corporation businesses in the technology area. Cookson’s team leads the studio’s effort to evangelize and implement strategic initiatives across Sony Pictures and beyond, including UltraViolet and digital distribution; efforts to curb online piracy; and the transition to 4K, 3D, and digital, file-based workflows in the making of entertainment.

Cookson leads the effort to maintain high standards of quality on theatrical digital postproduction technologies and to roll out cloud-based production tools. In 2009, he opened Sony Pictures’ dedicated 4K Digital Intermediate facility, Colorworks, where renowned colorists use state-of-the-art technology to master movies in 2D and 3D. He also acts as the studio’s representative and a top advisor to the Sony Corp. on all things 3D and 4K.

Prior to joining Sony Pictures, Cookson was CTO of Warner Bros. Entertainment and president of the Warner Bros. Technical Operations Division. He earlier served as vice president and general manager of operations and engineering for the CBS Television Network in New York. Before that, he worked for 10 years at the ABC Television Network, where he won an Emmy Award for his work as director of the ABC and Olympics International Broadcast Centers.

Autoscript’s +Clock-Plus+ is an LED SMPTE/EBU timecode display that can change in color from green to red when a suitable tally input is applied. The clock face has 2.25” tall digits that display HH:MM:SS A/P in 12-hour mode or HH:MM:SS in 24-hour mode. The timecode input is taken from either VITC embedded in the video input or from LTC. When a timecode source is connected, the clock will instantly set itself to the input time. If the timecode source is removed, the display will continue to update the time under control of an internal crystal oscillator.

Also at CCW 2013 will be the +TallyPlus+, a unique camera number system that features a large LED indicator. This displays the camera in green while in standby mode, then in red when the camera is live. Switching from green to red is achieved by a photo-electric cell that can be attached to the camera tally light. +TallyPlus+ retrofits to the whole range of Autoscript TFTs and has the unique feature of a second photo-electric cell built into the rear of +TallyPlus+. This docks with the cue light on the TFT.

Panavision Unveils New Primo V Lenses Optimized for Digital Cameras

(WOODLAND HILLS, CA) – Panavision, the company behind many of the industry’s most respected cinema lenses for the last 60 years, has introduced a new line of Primo lenses, the Primo V series, specifically designed to work with today’s high-resolution 35mm digital cameras.

“Panavision’s unmatched optical expertise and high-quality manufacturing capabilities have now been brought to bear on lenses adapted for digital cameras,” says Kim Snyder, Panavision’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’re focused on providing cinematographers with the best tools to tell their stories with vision and creativity. The Primo V lenses are designed to bring the look and feel of Panavision Primos to digital cinematography, using the lens elements from existing Primo lenses, long an industry standard for top cinematographers. Primo V lenses take advantage of specific design adaptations to work in harmony with digital cameras, maximizing image quality while delivering Primo quality and character.

“Cinematographers tell us that the hyper-sharp sensors in today’s digital cameras can result in images that are harsh and lack personality,” says Panavision’s VP of Optical Engineering Dan Sasaki. “That’s one reason why there’s so much emphasis on glass these days. The Primo V lenses bring the smooth, organic flavor of Primo lenses to the high fidelity digital image. Digital cameras require additional optical elements including low-pass and IR filters that increase off-axis aberrations. ND filters are sometimes part of the chain. Primo V lenses have been re-engineered to correct for this. Patent pending modifications eliminate the coma, astigmatism, and other aberrations introduced by the additional glass between the lens and the sensor, while preserving the desirable imaging characteristics of the Primo optics. The resulting image appears more balanced center-to-edge.

The Primo V lenses are compatible with any digital camera equipped with PL or Panavision 35 mount systems. They cannot be used on film cameras. The internal transports and mechanics of the Primo V lenses will retain the familiar Primo feel. Since the Primo V lenses retain the essential Primo character, imagery from Primo V and standard Primo lenses will intercut well. A set of Primo V primes will include 14.5, 17.5, 21, 27, 35, 40, 50, 75, and 100mm focal lengths.

“Filmmakers have embraced Panavision Primo lenses since their introduction 25 years ago,” notes Snyder. “Now the classic Primo look has been refined and optimized for use with the latest generation of 35mm sensor digital cameras.”

Artscape Extends Artistic Scope With HARMAN’s Martin Lighting Fixtures

AARHUS, Denmark — The Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town’s foreshore area is in the process of upgrading the lighting facilities of its three theatre spaces. The centre was originally established in 1971 as the Nico Malan and was renamed Artscape in 2001 under the aegis of the provincial administration.

With its close proximity to Cape Town’s central business district, the new International Convention Centre and the V & A Waterfront, Artscape is ideally situated to serve the Cape’s performing arts, film, tourism, entertainment, conference and exhibition industries. 



Covering an area of some 14,000 square meters, the Artscape complex consists of a fully equipped Opera House seating 1,487, a theatre auditorium seating 540, the smaller Arena theatre seating 140, a piazza, gardens, rehearsal rooms and ample parking. 



It is a prominent feature of the Cape Town cultural scene with thousands of top acts and actors entertaining hundreds of thousands of people over four decades. 



In late 2012, the complex received funding to upgrade the lighting rigs of the theatre spaces. Artscape’s Senior Lighting Technician, Nicholas Tilney, says there were two objectives with the upgrade: “Firstly, our Martin MAC 2000s, which were installed in 2000 and 2004, were getting old. Secondly, all three venues at the Centre are getting busier and we needed a system with a quicker turnaround time.” 



With more shows and with shorter runs it was essential that time spent setting up and focusing be kept to a minimum. Nicholas and the rest of the crew discussed this and came up with a list of equipment that would cut down the time they spent focusing lights by half. “We feel we came up with a list that matched good quality with the versatility and flexibility that is essential to our multi-discipline venue,” explains Nicholas. 



The Artscape crew’s decision was to stick with Martin Professional products because of the incredible service the MAC 2000s had given over more than a decade. This meant they turned to Electrosonic SA’s Robbi Nassi to guide them through the process. “Electrosonic SA was an automatic choice,” says Nicholas. “Their service – and that includes back-up, spares, and especially training – is superb, I can’t fault them.” 



The upgrade was planned to take place in two phases. The first phase was the delivery and installation of 15 Martin MAC III’s. The second phase included an additional nine MAC III’s and 24 MAC 700s. This does not mean the MAC 2000s were being thrown out. “After 12 years they are still great, we’ve given them lots of love and attention and they have given us fantastic service, and they will for a while yet,” says Nicholas. 



For Nicholas the most attractive element of the MAC III is its zoom capability. “It has the widest zoom on any unit I have ever seen and is extremely useful for our venue,” he explains. Another attribute Nicholas appreciates is that the shutter module that can be added to the lamp is included in the initial offering and does not have to be purchased separately. The 1500-watt output is also impressive. “No other moving head that I know of has that high a lamp rating,” he says. 



Nicholas is looking forward to setting up for a production with a long run. “We don’t fully appreciate yet what the features can do for us. We’ll learn as we go,” he laughs; “We can’t wait to use them to their full capacity in a full artistic environment.”

Austrian Space Forum’s Mission Control Relies On HARMAN’s AKG Headsets For Mars Mission Simulations

VIENNA, Austria – During World Space Week, more than 1,000 events in 80 countries celebrated space exploration with the motto, “Exploring Mars. Discovering Earth.” Headquartered in the Austrian Space Forum’s mission control room, each event was tactfully coordinated to help educate researchers, students and space enthusiasts on the science behind future missions to Mars. With 20 sets of HARMAN’s AKG HSC271 headsets and K171 MKII headphones, field tests, simulated Mars expeditions and international communications were successfully accomplished and transmitted.

The headsets were used for the flight controller consoles at Mission Control, in addition to teleconferences in classrooms worldwide on every continent with the exception of Antarctica.

“Like in any space mission, real or simulated, communication is everything. Loss of communication is one of the worst things to happen on a mission, whether it’s a space walk or during a critical experiment,” stated Dr. Gernot Groemer, President, Austrian Space Forum. “The AKG headsets were not only high quality from a manufacturing point of view, but also provided a high degree of ergonomics and crystal clear audio quality for those wearing the sets for hours at a time. The technology’s ability to block the noise from neighboring consoles was also very helpful for our missions.”

The space organization researched and deployed a vast communications program for the World Space Week celebrations, ensuring redundancy of the communications within Mission Control. With numerous missions in progress during the events, several field teams around the world were simultaneously transmitting into Austria. It was necessary for flight controllers to speak to their teams with clear audio without disturbing their neighbors, who also were directing missions. “With normal, off-the-shelf headsets, this would have been a recipe for disaster,” continued Groemer.

Throughout 2013, the Austrian Space Forum was testing several technology candidates for a new organization-wide headset. The flight directors decided on AKG headsets permanently.

Activities during the week included the WSW 2013 Mission to Mars – a 4-day simulation of a human Mars expedition at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah and a 5-person crew led by Dr. Jon Rask from the Space Biosciences Division at NASA Ames Research Center in California. Other highlights included field tests of the ExoMars Rover in Chile, rover testing by teams in the US, Poland, Germany and Hungary, as well as laboratory tests of the Gandolfi space suit in France and the Aouda.X spacesuit in Austria.
