SYMETRIX SYMNET RADIUS 12×8 DSP REVAMPS NORWEGIAN SKI JUMP

TRONDHEIM, NORWAY – NOVEMBER 2013: The Granåsen Ski-Jumping Stadium in Trondheim ranks among the highest and best-attended ski-jumping stadiums in Norway. Granåsen hosts events throughout the winter months, including the World Cup and the Continental Cup, on its two side-by-side hills, one a K-90 and the other a K-124. Seating on both sides of the jumps give spectators an intimate view. Recently, A/V integration firm ATEA gutted Granåsen’s aging and bloated analog sound reinforcement system and replaced it with a slim, easy-to-use digital system centered on the SymNet Radius 12×8 audio signal processor and two Symetrix ARC-K1e wall panel remotes.

“The old system used two giant racks of analog processers,” said Andre [Dominic] Schorr, senior A/V consultant with ATEA. “They were even using analog delay! Nothing was labeled, and although it worked, no one could understand the line structure to make changes. Moreover, graphic equalizers and the like were just sitting there, and staff could make changes.” Of course, those changes would usually be for the worse, however well intentioned they might be. Granåsen officials requested the new system to stabilize and streamline performance for the weekly events that required it. ATEA installed the system in the dead of winter, and the deep snow and frozen earth made things challenging. Some cable runs were left in a temporary state until the summertime thaw.

Depending on the event, the system may be operated from either of two redundant positions, one nearer to the jumps and one within the spectator seating. Each position possesses a Soundcraft EMP6 mixer. Three Sennheiser wireless microphone systems provide the most-commonly used inputs to the system. Stereo outputs from both mixers, as well as a direct line from the primary microphone and an auxiliary input, feed the Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8, leaving six of its twelve inputs available for future expansion. Seven of the Radius 12×8’s outputs feed four RCF HPS2500 amplifiers, then go to 100V transformers before feeding thirty-four 100V RCF weatherproof P2110 outdoor loudspeakers distributed across seven zones. The eighth output supplies signal to a hearing loop.

“Programming the SymNet Radius 12×8 using the SymNet Composer software was intuitive and quick,” said Schorr, whose background includes audio engineering. “It is very logical. Whenever I have a question, Symetrix’ online and live support are excellent. We were able to give the ski jump everything requested, including effective ducking of program material whenever the main microphone is used.” Although the SymNet Radius 12×8’s Dante networking capability is currently unused, it will make future expansion easy and cost-effective.

User control is achieved via the mixing consoles and via a pair of redundant Symetrix ARC-K1e wall panel remotes, one at each mix position. Users select from a list of presets and control various aspects of system performance using the ARC-K1e. For example, users can independently control the main microphone volume and the mixer output volume. A ‘mute all’ also answers a request from the Granåsen staff. “The Symetrix ARC panels are so user-friendly and so flexible, I can configure the interface to do whatever will make things easy and intuitive for the user,” said Schorr. “Even staff members with no technical ability can operate the system.”

NEW ASHLY NXP3.04 PROGRAMMABLE OUTPUT POWER AMPLIFIER WITH PROCESSING SERVES NEW ATHLETIC FIELD AT FDR HIGH SCHOOL

HYDE PARK, NEW YORK – NOVEMBER 2013: Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School was built as part of a Depression-era pubic works program in 1941 and owns the rare distinction of being named for a sitting President. Today, the school serves 1,550 students in Hyde Park, New York, FDR’s hometown. Although the original high school building is in the National Register of Historic Places, growth prompted the construction of a larger building long ago, and the school continues to maintain up-to-date facilities. When its athletic field aged beyond useful repair, the school board ordered it razed. Built on the same land, FDR’s new athletic stadium boasts a cutting-edge sound reinforcement system, with power and digital signal processing both provided by the high-efficiency, cost-effective Ashly nXp3.04 high-output power amplifier with on-board Protea™ processor.

Dominick Campana, owner at Pro Sound Associates (Guilderland, New York), led the system’s design and installation, and Live Sound, Inc. (Troy, New York) served as the sound system vendor. “There were several challenges associated with FDR’s new athletic stadium,” explained Campana. “First, we had to provide ample power to four zones over 300-feet of speaker wire – from the head end to the scoreboard. Second, we had to provide flexible and accurate DSP for fine- tuning, system protection, and multiple I/O routing. Third, we only had a short window between system installation and the first football game when we could commission the system. Finally – and this made all the other challenges that much harder – we only had a limited rack space beneath a stairway in the press box and single 20-amp circuit for the entire system. Based on my positive experience with Ashly amplifiers and processors, I suspected that their new nXp3.04 four-channel 3000-watt amplifier with internal DSP would help us overcome all of those challenges.”

Inputs to the system include four Shure ULX-series wireless microphones, three hardwired microphone jacks, and a Tascam CD-200i combination, aux in, iPod, and CD player. They feed a Shure SCM810 9×1 automixer, which in turn feeds the Ashly nXp3.04. The Ashly nXp3.04 is a lightweight, energy-efficient Class D switching amplifier with four 3000-watt channels and an integrated 4×4 Protea DSP. Three of its amplifier channels power three Community R2 loudspeakers at the scoreboard. The final amplifier channel powers a pair of Community DS5 surface-mount loudspeakers in the press box. Additional aux outputs from the nXp3.04’s DSP section feed a Listen Technologies assistive listening system.

“As with all Ashly networkable devices, connecting to and accessing the nXp3.04’s DSP was instantaneous,” said Campana. “Because I have considerable experience with the Ashly ne-Series of DSPs, the layout and workflow of the nXp DSP was pleasingly familiar. The Community R2′s like to see a lot of power, and I knew the nXp3.04 would be able to deliver with a maximum output of 3,000 watts at 2 ohms per channel. Not only was there power to spare, 2000 watts per channel @ 4 ohms, but the nXp3.04 performed at full throttle with only a minimal amperage draw. With all of its brains and brawn, I’ll definitely utilize the Ashly nXp-Series for future jobs – especially at its more-than-fair price point.”

API 1608 TRAVERSES THE EARTH

JESSUP, MARYLAND: With hundreds of satisfied customers, API’s 1608 console continues to make a mark on the music industry with the company’s signature API sound. STUDIO K – Paris, France Situated on the fourth floor of a 17th century building in Paris, David Chalmin’s 32-channel automated API 1608 console is the perfect fit for his semi-private space. Chalmin began as a musician, but his interest in pro audio gear has turned him into an engineer who has worked on everything from alternative rock to classical music.

Chalmin did his fair share of research before deciding on the 1608 and chose the console based on the API sound, character, and API 500 Series format. “The preamps are amazing, so already while tracking you get your sound. Then, during the mix, you have huge headroom to play with. Automation is simple and straightforward. It brings the console to another level. This console is a dream!” says Chalmin.

VIRGINIA ARTS – Charlottesville, Virginia Next, Virginia Art’s (Virginia’s oldest operating commercial studio) opted for a 16 channel API 1608, again with P-Mix automation. The console will serve as the flagship in Virginia Arts Recording, owned by Chris Doermann and engineered by Sean Dart.

The 1608 has already served many local and national acts, such as John Grisham, Thomas Dolby, Those Darlins, Ra Ra Riot, The Walkmen, Cowboy Junkies, and William and Mary Accidentals.
“The API brand has long been known for its excellent products. Sound and flexibility were among the top factors [in purchasing the 1608]. The console’s small footprint and low power draw was the perfect addition to our relatively small control room. Also, API’s staff welcomed us into the factory on day one and answered every question we’ve had since. And the biggest thing – great sound,” said Sean Dart.

EMERY RECORDING STUDIOS – Novelty, Ohio Final example, studio owner, producer, engineer and mixer, Eric Emery, chose a 16 channel automated API 1608 to represent his workspace, Emery Recording Studios, and his band, Concordia. Working under Johnny K. at Groovemaster Studios, as well as Grammy Award-winning mixer Craig Bauer, Emery’s 1608 choice of console has added a level of API professionalism to his studio, which has been in operation since 2005 when he was just 15 years old.

“The first time I heard that magical API Sound I was hooked. It just has that special punch you can’t get from anything else,” said Emery. “This console gives my mixes something I couldn’t get from any other piece of gear. This is a definite no-brainer if you want to achieve that truly commercial sound.”

Bexel Completes RF System Integration for Fusion Network and Upgrades WCBS-TV with Managed Antenna System

Custom RF Solutions Meet Broadcasters’ Unique Needs

(BURBANK, CA) Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, recently completed major projects for two broadcasters, the new cable network Fusion and WCBS-TV of New York. Bexel provided complete RF system integration for the newly launched Fusion studio located in Doral, Florida. For WCBS-TV, the studio was just upgraded with Bexel’s proprietary Managed Antenna System (MAS). Both jobs were overseen by the company’s Audio Specialties Group (ASG), whose unique RF services deliver the ability to communicate over longer distances and with more information than was previously available to the broadcast market.

Fusion, a joint venture between ABC News and Univision, launched October 28. The English-language network features news, information and lifestyle programming aimed at Latinos and young Millennial viewers. Bexel was contracted by The Systems Group to provide complete RF system integration for the new facility that was built from the ground up to support Fusion, as well as Univision’s news programming. The entire process, from the planning stages to final installation, took nearly a year.

Bexel’s skilled engineers provided a MAS to facilitate the use of all wireless production equipment throughout the entire Fusion facility, allowing the complete network of equipment to work in all studios as a shared resource. The project required eight zones of RF coverage, and installed equipment included five Bexel IS8 Combiners, five PA1 Distribution Amps, five UHPS1X8 Power Splitters, three UMC16X16 Receive Multicouplers, 28 Shure Axient Systems, 54 Lectrosonics IFB systems, and nine Telex BTR800 Wireless Intercom systems. Approximately 20,000 feet of coax cable was deployed for the job, along with nearly 80 antennas.

“It is always a tremendous opportunity when we can get in on the ground floor of a project,” says Jim Dugan, senior project engineer, Bexel. “With Fusion’s new studio, we were able to start with a blank canvas, and our experts were really able to configure a system that was right for their specific and varied needs. Beyond consulting on all the RF in the facility, we provided project management, frequency coordination, bandwidth planning, and equipment purchasing as well.”

For WCBS-TV studios in New York, Bexel recently upgraded the MAS for this market’s top-rated news station, which is also home to local area talk show “The Couch.” The system allows talent to roam from their home studio, CBS Studio 46, to the adjacent newsroom and the soon to be completed Studio 55. The wireless antenna solution at WCBS accommodates 16 Sennheiser wireless microphones, eight Lectrosonics IFB systems, and two Telex BTR800 Wireless Intercom systems on a single, four-zone system.

WCBS is located in the CBS Broadcast Center, a million-square-foot production facility in Manhattan that serves as the headquarters of CBS News and CBS Sports. Over the last two years, Bexel has also installed Managed Antenna Systems in all five of the complex’s other studios.

American Society of Cinematographers to Pay Tribute to Dean Cundey, Eduardo Serra and Richard Rawlings

Trio will be Presented Awards at Annual ASC Gala

(LOS ANGELES, CA) Dean Cundey, ASC; Eduardo Serra, AFC, ASC; and Richard Rawlings, Jr., ASC will be recognized by their peers during the 28th Annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Awards on February 1, 2014, here at the Hollywood & Highland Ray Dolby Ballroom. Cundey will receive the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Serra will be presented with the International Achievement Award; and Rawlings will pick up the org’s Career Achievement in Television Award.

“Anyone who has been in the presence of these three brilliant and talented individuals should count themselves lucky,” notes ASC President Richard Crudo. “Dean, Eduardo and Dick have each had an immeasurable impact on our art form, and we’re proud to have the opportunity to honor their outstanding craftsmanship.”

Cundey first attracted widespread attention when he collaborated with John Carpenter on the production of Halloween (1978). The two filmmakers continued to work together on such memorable films as The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Halloween II and III, and Big Trouble in Little China.

For his work on Robert Zemeckis’ landmark, live-action film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Cundey garnered both Oscar(r) and BAFTA nominations. Zemeckis and Cundey also teamed up on the beloved Back to the Future trilogy, Romancing the Stone, and Death Becomes Her. Cundey earned his first nomination from his peers at the ASC for Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991), and a second one for his gripping imagery of Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 (1995). He also earned the Society of Operating Cameraman’s President’s Award in 1999.

Cundey’s credits also include such notable films as Jurassic Park, What Women Want, Garfield, The Holiday, The Spy Next Door, Jack and Jill, Crazy Kind of Love, and the upcoming releases Walking with the Enemy and Carry Me Home.

“Dean has continually raised the bar with his magnificent imagery, and I’m certain he will continue to do so for many years to come,” says ASC Awards Chairman Lowell Peterson. “He has compiled an incomparable body of work that has made a meaningful and indelible impression on the art of filmmaking. This award is a symbol of our respect and admiration for both the man and his work.”

Serra earned his first Academy Award(r) nomination for Iain Softley’s The Wings of the Dove (1997), which also netted him a BAFTA Award. In 2004, he received Oscar(r) and BAFTA nominations for Peter Webber’s Girl with the Pearl Earring. His work on such films as Jude, Map of the Human Heart, What Dreams May Come and Funny Bones is highly acclaimed. Serra has over 50 feature films to his credit, including A Promise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2, Blood Diamond, Beyond the Sea, Unbreakable, and The Widow of Saint-Pierre, among others. In 2004, for his services to enhance Portuguese culture, he was presented with the prestigious Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of the highest honors given by his native Portugal.

Rawlings grew up in Hollywood, under the tutelage of his father, Richard Rawlings, Sr., ASC. He worked alongside his father for years, learning the industry from the ground up. His first TV series as director of photography was in 1978 on the cultural phenomenon Charlie’s Angels. He went on to shoot such memorable series as Matt Houston, Stingray, L.A. Law, Boston Public, Gilmore Girls and Desperate Housewives, among others. Rawlings telefilm credits include Halley’s Comet, Spring Awakening and Gidget’s Summer Reunion. He has earned Emmy(r) nominations for the series Ohara (1987), Paradise (1988), Reasonable Doubts (1991), and the television movie Big Dreams & Broken Hearts: The Dottie West Story (1995). Rawlings also earned an ASC Outstanding Achievement Award for Paradise in 1989, and another nomination for the series in 1990. In 1993, he received his third ASC Award nomination for the telefilm When No One Would Listen.

FUJINON HD Lenses Selected to Improve Fan Experience at College Stadiums Throughout Western and Midwestern U.S.

The University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaignrecently installed two XA50x9.5 telephoto lenses and four ZA22x7.6 Select Series ENG-Style telephoto lenses for game use at its Memorial Stadium. Northern Illinois University in DeKalb is now using two XA50x9.5 and two ZA22x7.6 lenses for video displays in Huskie Stadium. The University of Washington in Seattle added one XA50x9.5, one XA77x9.5 telephoto field lens and one HA18x7.6 Premier Series ENG-Style HD lens to its game day equipment package at Husky Stadium.

Also, Salt Lake City Community College recently upgraded its studio equipment to include three XA22x7 compact studio lenses.

FSR Continues Tradition of Helping Local Kids Gear Up for Class

Manufacturer Offers Much-Needed Support for United Way’s “Backpacks 4 Kids”
School Supply Program

Woodland Park, NJ – FSR, a Passaic County-based manufacturer of products for the audio / video, education, hospitality, government, and religious markets, continues its support of the local community by once again partnering with United Way of Passaic County for its highly successful “Backpacks 4 Kids” program, the largest of its kind in the region. By donating essential school supplies, such as 50 backpacks filled with notebooks, erasers, pens, pencils, erasers and crayons, along with 50 lunch boxes, FSR joins other local businesses and the United Way of Passaic County in their efforts to help more than 900 local students in the region with the essential school supplies they need for the school year ahead.

170 Integrators Attend New England’s Emerging Technologies & Home Awareness Expo

Burlington, MA – Last month, Easy Access Distribution – the New England chapter of Catalyst AV distribution network — hosted their 14th annual Emerging Technologies & Home Awareness Expo at the Billerica Courtyard by Marriott Hotel. In total, 170 local integrators attended the 2-day event.

Brands that exhibited their latest products and hosted training sessions included home awareness & energy management brand enerG, Atlonta, Bitwise, EnGenius, TiO, Luxul, TiVo, Clearview, RTI, Vanco, Vivitek, and more.

Each day Jeff Boccaccio presented on HDMI Rev. 2.0, addressing new features, how they benefit customers, uncovering the details of the new standard, how it will function and what changes exist in the transmission line. For each session, Boccaccio presented to a packed room of integrators that were extremely engaged, making for both enjoyable and informative sessions.
