Event Safety Alliance To Debut Industry’s First Event Safety Guide For Live Event Professionals

After nearly two years of development and the input of hundreds of industry, regulatory and safety professionals, the Event Safety Alliance (ESA) today announced the forthcoming release of the Event Safety Guide — the live event industry’s first comprehensive reference guide of established industry best practices.

According to Jim Digby, Executive Director of the Event Safety Alliance, Version 1.0 of the Guide will be available at the LDI 2013 Conference andTradeshow in Las Vegas (November 21-24) at Booth #2363.

“The official release of the Event Safety Guide is an historic milestone in the

standardization of safety practices within our industry,” Digby said today. “With the first edition of the guide complete, we now move our focus to efforts helping professionals apply its contents in the planning and safe execution of their events.  Among the many developing resources on the horizon by the ESA – safety leadership training for event professionals.”

According to Chester Bennington, lead vocalist of multi-platinum rock band LINKIN PARK,  “I’m extremely proud of you, Jim, and the immense amount of work you and your colleagues have put into this historic moment.  I’d like to express for the entire music community, both professional and nonprofessional, our gratitude to the ESA for considering our safety, the audiences safety and the well-being of all by insuring that every possible consideration for venue and operational safety and security have been assessed by the industries’ top professionals.   The tragedies that will be prevented by your unwavering dedication to all of our safety means that the work of the ESA will — in the greatest way — go unnoticed as we go home each night without incident.”

Printed editions of the guide will be available for purchase on the Event Safety Alliance website next month. Additionally, eBook versions of the Event Safety Guide will be available for download at several online retailers including Amazon, iTunes and Barnes & Noble. Both formats of the guide will be sold for $49.95, with proceeds from all purchases helping the ESA develop additional resources and further the message of “life safety first.”

“From the very beginning, our goal has been to have the Event Safety Alliance become the industry’s preeminent safety advocacy trade association,” continued Digby. “By making the guide available at a cost below most publications of this type, we believe we can continue to grow the ESA while making sure this critical information is user friendly and gets into as many hands as possible.”

Developed in response to a series of accidents within the live event industry, the Event Safety Guide is a collection of best practices culled from the experience and insight of top professionals within the event industry, as well as relevant life safety standards currently applicable by groups such as OSHA, NFPA, ICC and PLASA. Prior to the Event Safety guide, no such comprehensive collection of guidance existed that industry professionals could refer to covering many of the unique hazards the industry faces. Modeled after the U.K.’s “Purple Guide”, the Event Safety Guide is intended to serve as a one-stop reference to help users ask the right questions while planning for and managing events. It addresses a broad range of topics relevant to most events including emergency planning, weather preparedness and personal protective equipment, as well as technical issues such as temporary staging, rigging and special effects. The guide has been intentionally designed for field use, written in straightforward language with contents organized topically to aid in quick access to information.

About the Event Safety Alliance (ESA)

Formed in January 2012, the Event Safety Alliance (ESA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the concept of “life safety first” during all phases of event production. Through the dissemination of information and the development of planning resources, the ESA strives to eliminate the knowledge barrier that often contributes to unsafe conditions and behaviors.  In just under two years time and due in part to it’s all inclusive mantra: “you are the event safety alliance”, the ESA has grown in both scope and influence. The group now boasts a registration list of over 2700 individuals from a variety of disciplines, including event producers, engineers, riggers, equipment lessors, tour managers, roadies, and safety specialists. BTX Custom Plates Connect Brooklyn’s BRIC Art Media House

User-Friendly Software Facilitates Plates and Panel Design for Renovated Cultural Landmark

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. – Nov. 19, 2013 — BTX Technologies, a value-added distributor and manufacturer of interface, integration, and system products, today announced that the company’s user-friendly Pro Plates and Panels software has been applied to a new flexible performance space at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts Media House. Using drag-and-drop technology, integrator North American Theatrix Ltd. was able to easily specify and order custom bulkhead plates and rack panels for the installation, enabling the BRIC to have a fully functional system in time for the center’s opening date.

A vital element to the growth of Brooklyn’s artistic community since 1979, BRIC presents some of the city’s most widely renowned and beloved arts and media programs. In order to keep the center’s facilities aligned with the needs of the community, the City of New York and BRIC began renovations on its facility — a 40,000 square foot multidisciplinary arts space — and created a new contemporary arts gallery, a media facility, and a flexible performance space (240 seated and 400 standing) for patrons. To allow signal routing to the new spaces and throughout the entire venue, North American Theatrix turned to BTX’s custom plate products. Set up across the facility, the plates are the main interface for input/output connections of the center’s audio, video, control, and networking needs.

“Since the project’s technological requirements had changed between the design and installation phase, we needed a connection solution that was easy to design, configure, and specify,” said Pat Nelson, chief operating officer, North American Theatrix. “By using BTX’s Pro Plates and Panel software, we were able to fully customize 135 bulkhead plates and rack panels, ensuring that we adhered to the project’s tight timeline and deliverables. Considering BTX’s unmatched track record for quality and support, the company’s custom plates were the obvious choice for this impressive installation.”

Using BTX Pro Plate and Panel software, configuration and ordering are simplified for users ranging from integrators to engineers to project administrators. With a process that takes mere minutes to complete, customers simply drag wall plates or rack panels from BTX’s extensive product library to begin designing and configuring the products. Connector options appear in an easy-to-navigate menu, including popular connectors from manufacturers such as Neutrik(R) and Switchcraft(R), in addition to BTX’s own award-winning connectors. Users then drag-and-drop their choices to the desired spot on the plate or panel and can either request quotes or order directly from the software. For the BRIC installation, North American Theatrix further tailored the plates via the software’s customized engraving option.

“Our Pro Plate and Panel Designer software was designed to be the most user-friendly plate customization process on the market,” said Greg Schwartz, president of BTX Technologies. “Since most orders are delivered within just three to five days, the solution is also perfectly suited for projects with tight turnarounds. We are delighted that our custom plates were able to satisfy the needs of BRIC and look forward to participating in similar installation projects in the future.”

Conviction to HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Since the introduction of HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression Series, houses of worship have enjoyed the consoles’ ease of use and unmatched sound quality. Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Conviction, which delivers Christianity to convicted inmates, recently upgraded its audio inventory with an Si Expression 1 digital console.

When Eddie Baird, owner of Conviction, used the Si Expression for the first time, he was amazed at the quality of the sound from the console. As a musician with decades of experience in sound equipment, Baird toured more than 500 prisons in the US over the past year, and recognized the difference between a console from Soundcraft and those from other brands immediately when he fired up the Si Expression for the first time.

“It is simply amazing,” Baird said. “The different sounds that can be mixed in this board are incredible. I also love the Lexicon effects, which are the perfect additions for our needs right now. I feel like I can do so much with just the Si Expression.”

To complement the channel and bus processing, all Si Expression consoles integrate four stereo Lexicon FX processors based on the MX400, boasting 29 presets each, user-adjustable parameters and dedicated tap-tempo keys.

For the touring artist, the Si Expression 1 also offers a compact form factor with fast setup times. With the built-in Cue system, the 24 recallable mic pre amps can be saved for convenience.

“Setup times are incredibly fast,” Baird noted. “We arrive at detention centers and are ready to go immediately, which is fortunate due to the limited time constraints they give us. The transition from analog to this digital console was smoother than expected, because it feels just like an analog board, but with the added digital features. I absolutely love the experience, and look forward to recording with it.”

DPA Microphones are on the Road and in the Studio with Alicia Keys and Ann Mincieli

Engineer, technical director and album coordinator for the GRAMMY® Award-winner relies on a variety of d:dicate mics to heighten the sound of Keys’ instruments at Jungle City Studios and during her Set the World on Fire tour

NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 20, 2013 – Anyone who has heard a recent Alicia Keys song, or has attended one of her live concerts during her Set the World on Fire Tour, has experienced the sound of a DPA d:dicate™ Recording Microphone. That’s because engineer Ann Mincieli, who is Keys’ studio technical director and album coordinator and helps with tour programming, uses DPA mics to supply a versatile and pristine sound for Keys’ piano on the road and during studio sessions at Mincieli’s Jungle City Studios in New York.

Among Mincieli’s DPA collection are several 4023 Compact Cardioid Microphones, as well as the 4011A Cardioid Microphone and 4006 Omnidirectional Microphone. “I first started using DPA Microphones because they are really low profile and sound incredible,” says Mincieli. “With the live show kit for the 4023 microphones, I’m able to get an incredible piano tone with the lid closed, which allows me to hide the cables. I sometimes use the 4011s on acoustic guitars, but they’re my choice microphones for recording Alicia’s piano. All of the company’s microphones sound incredible and are really versatile.”

First introduced to DPA Microphones by Eli Ward, Production Manager on Keys’ last tour, which was entirely acoustic, Mincieli found the 4023 Compact Cardioid Microphone to be just the element she needed to bring out the best sound of the musician’s piano.

“When I first heard the microphones, I was just blown away,” continues Mincieli. “We had been experimenting with a few other mics and I just knew the DPA 4023s were the perfect fit. They’re versatile mics that can transition from the stage to promo events to the studio. The 4023s are especially incredible microphones that really fill the void left by other products on the market. Many people will forgo trying to perfect the musician’s sound and will start using a module because they don’t have the right microphones. The 4023s provide a really beautiful, warm tone and a low profile that makes it easier for production crew members to incorporate them unobtrusively into the visual aesthetics needed for a set.”

The engineer also expressed interest in trying out some of DPA’s latest microphone options, including the d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and d:facto™ Vocal Microphone, for future performances.

With more than 20 years of experience in the music business, Mincieli has travelled the world engineering for some of the industry’s most renowned artists, including Jay-Z, Jennifer Hudson and Whitney Houston. In addition to her work as an engineer, Mincieli is the founder of Jungle City Studios, where she draws upon her extensive background to offer clients a premier recording environment.

Second Edition of ‘TV on Wheels: The Story of Remote Television Production’ Now In Publication

Landmark Book, Co-authored by NEP CTO George Hoover and Jim Boston, Presents In-Depth Picture of Remote Broadcasting Technology and Operation

PITTSBURGH — Nov. 20, 2013 – NEP today announced that the company’s chief technology officer, George Hoover, and co-author Jim Boston have published the second edition of their acclaimed book, “TV on Wheels: The Story of Remote Television Production.” First published in 2002, “TV on Wheels” covers the history, planning logistics, operations, and technology that define today’s remote broadcasting industry.

“In his 20 years with NEP, George has led the modernization and diversification of our fleet and studios, and ensured that the NEP reputation for excellence continues to grow along with our involvement in sports and entertainment events,” said Kevin Rabbitt, CEO, NEP. “But beyond NEP, George is revered in the industry and he’s literally written the book on remote broadcasting. We congratulate both George and Jim on the new edition of ‘TV on Wheels,’ truly the definitive book on this exciting and complex world.”

“Our intent with the updated book is to provide a detailed tour through a segment of the broadcast industry that is at the forefront of how media will operate in the future,” Hoover said. “Many of today’s most important technologies, such as HD, 4K, and virtual graphics, grew to critical mass as a result of the pioneering efforts of on-location television producers.”

“TV on Wheels” is considered such a valuable resource that the first order for this new edition was from a college in Australia, where the book will be used as a textbook. With more than 1,000 photos and graphics, the 2013 edition is more than twice as long as the first, reflecting the tremendous advances in technology during the years since the book was first published.

“Although the creative aspects of remote production are essentially the same, the technology has made quantum leaps in the past 11 years,” Hoover said. “One of the biggest changes we’ve seen is the invasion of microprocessors and embedded computers that have replaced the built-for-purpose, dedicated hardware that was prevalent in 2002. Everything is bigger and more sophisticated — a 144 x 144 router was considered big then, but today it’s common to see routers that are 10 times larger.”

Based on the success of the first edition in the education market, Hoover and Boston anticipate that a large percentage of the new book’s sales will be to college and university broadcasting technology departments. To that end, “TV on Wheels” has been redesigned with a more academic focus and an expanded glossary and index. The book is also now available as an e-book.

“In addition to its academic use, we designed the book to be more of a teaching tool for broadcasting professionals at large and also to appeal to a broad universe of potential readers,” said Boston. “Since the majority of locally produced TV is news, we’ve devoted a fairly large section to DENG and DSNG. We can also see the book’s value as a resource manual in the field, especially with the e-book version that engineers can easily access on their tablets, to learn about a specific technology.”

A percentage of the proceeds from sales of “TV on Wheels” will go to the Sports Video Group’s Sports Broadcasting Fund, established in early 2012, which offers financial assistance to those in the sports broadcast production community and their families who face illness, death, or disaster.

More information on “TV on Wheels: The Story of Remote Television Production” is available at remotetruckbook.com. Visitors may also order the e-book or the hardcover version from the site.

Kramer Electronics and Calibre UK Join Forces to Deliver Premium Pro-AV Products

Tim Brooksbank, Chairman of Calibre UK and Aviv Ron, Kramer’s VP Business Development & Strategy at Kramer’s head-office in Jerusalem, with one of their first joint products to debut at ISE 2014.

The two companies now offer dedicated sale and support of world’s largest and most comprehensive range of Scalers

Electronics designer, manufacturer and supplier, Kramer Electronics, Ltd., and Calibre UK, British electronics manufacturer, announce their global joint sales, supply, development and business co-operation agreement.

Integrated products focused on innovation

Calibre’s key models for the Pro-AV & Broadcast industries are to be incorporated into Kramer’s product line-up in Q4 this year. This strengthens Kramer’s range by the addition of a new line of premium scalers including powerful low-latency processing, warping, geometry correction and edge-blending with models for fixed installation and rental and staging, as well as models targeted at LED videowalls and television broadcast studios.

With obvious customer benefits, the two companies have also agreed to work together to accelerate Calibre’s future product developments and have ambitious plans to roll out a comprehensive range of market-leading premium video processing, routing and control products.

Think local, act global

To support customers and the implementation of new product introductions, Kramer Electronics will supply dedicated resources to support and market these new models throughout Kramer Electronics’ worldwide network of more than 20 regional offices.

Tim Brooksbank, Chairman at Calibre, will head up this effort within Kramer as well as maintaining his Calibre role: “Having just passed our 25-year anniversary at Calibre, this cooperation with Kramer marks an exciting start to our next quarter century. We will continue independently with our OEM and own-label business activities, but with Calibre-branded products being progressively merged into the Kramer range. This opens up access to a far wider market for our products and helps Kramer strengthen its presence in its premium markets.
