DPA Microphones Bring Quality Sound to Studio and Small Screen

Audio engineer Richard Gough is the latest in a roster of high profile Front-of-House engineers who are investing in DPA d:facto™ II Vocal Microphones for use with big name recording clients.

Gough has been using d:facto Vocal Microphones supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network with a number of artists. One of these is Conor Maynard who has tried the microphone in the studio for small live recordings, and in a broadcast setting for live TV performances including one for SBTV and another for ITV2′s Xtra Factor.

“Maynard is still quite fresh and new to the music industry,” Gough explains, “so I didn’t really expect him to notice using different mics on his own vocal. But after using the d:facto for about ten shows in a row, there were a couple of TV performances where we had to use another brand of wireless mic and he instantly noticed the difference. He wasn’t happy with the amount of ‘pop’ or the ‘booming’ in the low end that these other microphones were giving. It was a noticeable difference for him.”

Also impressive for Gough has been the way DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone performs, even d when used in an unconventional way.

“Conor ‘cups’ the mic, like a rapper,” he explains, “and this distorts the polar pattern of the mic. But noticeably with the d:facto, this doesn’t seem to matter too much. I still get plenty of gain before feedback in my side fills, so his vocal is there if his ears fail. This is one of the most impressive things about the mic. It has such a smooth response and gives lovely warm lows without ‘popping’ and ‘booming’.”

Gough’s criteria for an ideal mic are build quality, sound quality, gain before feedback, and adaptability. DPA’s d:facto vocal Microphone possesses all of these attributes, he says, and is adaptable too, with the ability to change the capsule with just a few turns.

“The d:facto Vocal Microphone makes my job so easy: previously I was always using the parametric EQ to get rid of little things I didn’t like the sound of, which I now realize were down to the old mic. Now I’m leaving it completely flat, just high-passing to about 125Hz. It couldn’t be simpler: I add a compressor to the channel, with a nice reverb and I’m done.”

Gough has been using DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones in several tiny venues recently and says its performance “was amazing”. Artists he has used it with include Conor Maynard, Sivu and the band Kowalski – with Lauryn Hill possibly next in line.

“She is such a stickler for her IEMs and wedges sounding great but also being very loud,” he explains, “so that’s going to be my next d:facto challenge.”

Equally at home in sound reinforcement and recording applications, DPA’s high quality d:facto II Vocal Microphone is designed to offer extraordinary natural sound, high separation from nearby sound sources and extreme sound level handling. Its supercardioid pattern and superb definition gives high separation and true sound colour on stage. A three-stage pop protection grid built into the microphone removes unwanted noise.

The d:facto Vocal Microphone provides improved audio performance as it is linear in frequency and phase, both on- and off-axis, while its impressive definition and accuracy reproduces a singer’s voice effortlessly. The flexibility of its adapter system gives the user simple and affordable possibilities of choosing either a wired DPA handle or the professional wireless system of their choosing, with no loss in sound quality.

Portland Thorns FC Stream Championship Season with Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – Fans of Portland Thorns FC, a professional women’s soccer team and part of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), were able to watch home games during the team’s 2013 championship season live on the Web via HD streaming video. The coverage was produced through a unique sharing of stadium resources anchored by a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 1000 integrated production system.

Both Thorns FC and the Portland Timbers Major League Soccer (MLS) team, owned by Peregrine Sports LLC, play at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore. While Thorns FC wanted an online presence for the league’s inaugural season, the club opted not to invest in an entirely new control room.

Instead, built in a space originally designated as an audio booth for the stadium’s main control room, an area was established specifically for streaming Thorns FC matches. Using video output from the existing Granite 1000 production switcher allocated for in-stadium video wall presentations, combined with audio from the radio broadcast, each Web production was managed by a single operator. Dave Spraker of spraker.tv, who served as the integrator for the project, said it was essential to “leverage the existing Broadcast Pix system to do a second show.”

The Web streaming room, built around a 27-inch iMac, receives an output from the Granite 1000 via HD-SDI cable, which is fed into a Magma ExpressBox 3T Thunderbolt PCIe expansion box equipped with a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad HD capture card. Streaming is handled through Telestream’s Wirecast software. The room also includes dual touchscreens that serve as mirror displays of the main control room’s customized multi-view, which is part of the Granite’s built-in toolset.

In an effort to avoid the expense of an additional control panel, streaming productions are managed using iPixPanel, Broadcast Pix’s iPad-based virtual control interface. Matt Smith, director of broadcasting for the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC, said iPixPanel was a far better solution than keyboard and mouse-based control, especially when trying to TD a soccer match with shared resources. “It was a nice solution to be able to use the iPad,” he added. “That was the way to go.”

The system was installed in February, shortly before the Timbers began preseason and well in advance of Thorns FC’s first home game on April 21. Nine of 11 home games were streamed live to www.portlandthornsfc.com during the season. (The additional home games were televised by Fox Soccer.) The NWSL also partnered with YouTube to provide live and on-demand access to matches online.

Smith thought the Thorns FC streaming video game coverage was among the best in the league. He said Thorns FC had a very successful following on the Web that grew as the season progressed. “We knew there would be great interest in the team,” he recalled, “and we wanted to offer a high definition option for fans who wanted to see Thorns FC games online.”

The simultaneous productions were not entirely different, just tailored to suit the two audiences. The main production, designed for the large video wall in the south end of the stadium, included full-screen graphics, sponsorship messages, and extensive replays. The streaming presentation, however, had much fewer replays, as it was aimed at an online audience solely relying on the video stream to follow the action.

While most of the streaming coverage was simply a line cut of the in-stadium production, the Web director could take any source independently using the iPixPanel and coordinate with the stadium director on headset. For example, the streaming production could take the main game camera during replays or commercials, or switch to a stadium “beauty cam” during halftime. “It worked really well,” Smith said.

About Broadcast Pix The leader in live video production systems with end-to-end integration, Broadcast Pix was founded in 2002 and has customers in more than 110 countries. Its Video Control Centers™ combine an integrated switcher, clip server, CG, and external control software with patented control panels, unique touch-screens, and exceptional displays. Hob Sound Adds HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression To Its One-Man Show

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts – Rob Bernstein, the sole owner of Hob Sound, recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 to accommodate his production and mixing needs. As a one-man business that provides sound equipment for a wide range of events, Bernstein requires an equally versatile console to match his needs.

The Soundcraft Si Expression console is the complete solution for all of Bernstein’s mixing requirements. Versatility is an understatement when it comes to this digital board with recallable features and analog-type controls. In addition, the Si Expression Series comes with GEQ effects on every bus as well as built-in Lexicon effects.

Within 15 minutes of working with the Si Expression, Bernstein was amazed at the quality of the console. “Its versatility blows anything else out of the water,” he said. “Having the graphic EQ’s available to all the buses is a huge advantage, and combined with the availability of compressors on each channel, this console replaces a lot of gear. This is critical to my operation, since I cannot haul all those additional racks by myself.”

The Soundcraft Si Expression comes with tons of features that make it easy to use and convenient to set up, which is highly appealing to sound engineers managing multiple events. ‘1 Control = 1 Function’ ensures that there is never any layering of controls. The One Touch Easy Mix (TOTEM) allows a single key to mix to an AUX, FX or Matrix bus. The Si Expression also features FaderGlow™ color-coded illuminated faders and a range of connectivity and network cards. It combines the utility of a digital console with the simplicity of an analog one.

“I love how much faster it is to set up for an event, due to the recallable features,” Bernstein added. “Even though this is my first digital board, it retains the simple feel and authentic sound of an analog board that I have grown accustomed to in my decades of experience. Also, I no longer have to worry about choosing which channel gets compressed or gated.”

Hob Sound recently mixed a show with the local band The Fools in the Boston area. “The Si Expression sounded great, and it is everything that I need from a console,” according to Bernstein.

The Si Expression 2 console was purchased through Pro Audio Star (www.proaudiostar.com).

Renkus-Heinz Helps Schengenfest Cap the Summer Season

Vinica, Slovenia – November, 2013…. Now in its sixth year, Schengenfest has quickly become Slovenia’s largest and most popular summer music festival. Held in the world-renowned Krajinski Park on the banks of the River Kolpa, the show’s three-day ticket includes dozens of bands and DJs on three stages, as well as free camping, an amusement park, a theater, games, workshops, and more.

This year’s lineup included UK rockers Skunk Anansie, Belgium’s Triggerfinger, and German reggae artists Gentlemen and the Evolution, as well as an all-star roster of DJs from the US and Europe. Performances spanned three stages, with audio provided by one of the country’s largest concert providers, Turjak-based Akustika Pirman.

The Main Stage was outfitted with a massive Renkus-Heinz line array, with 16 VLX3 cabinets and 24 DRS18-2B subwoofers per side. Five PN102 cabinets provided front fill, with six PN102LA boxes per side deployed from the FOH roof to cover the area shaded by it. Analog and digital were represented at FOH, with DiGiCo SD8 and Soundcraft MH-3 48 consoles. Xilica XP-4080 processors handle system processing, with Lab.gruppen amplification. Stage monitors were also Renkus-Heinz, including 12 PNX151 wedges, side fills with DRS18-2B subs, and a PNX121 and DRS18 rig for drum fill.

The Electro Stage was an ongoing DJ party, pumped up with left and right arrays of 12 STXLA/9 cabinets, with bass amply covered by 16 DRS18-2B subs. Monitors for the DJ included an IC Live SUB IC215 and two PN102LA cabinets per side, along with six more PNX121 boxes for additional monitoring. A DiGiCo SD11 console handled FOH mix, with XTA processing and Lab.gruppen amps.

Over at the smaller, more intimate riverfront Beach Stage, a single TRX151T and DRS18 sub per side handled PA duties, with PNX121 boxes for monitoring.

“I knew we needed a truly powerful setup for this event, as we were expecting a huge crowd,” says system engineer Ales Dravinec. “We wanted to create a system that would deliver excellent throw across the entire frequency range, and we came up with a system that gave us not just great coverage, but headroom to spare. Setup was straightforward and effortless as well. Bravo, Renkus-Heinz!”

Akustika Pirman’s Metod Komatar adds, “As one of Slovenia’s largest rental companies, we work on a wide range of events, from national celebrations and congresses to concerts, TV shows, and many others.
