Auralex® HoverMat™ Goes on Tour and in the Studio with Drummer Rich Redmond

— Auralex®’s HoverMat™ slip-resistant drum mat keeps Rich Redmond’s kit sounding clean and tight, whether he’s in the studio or on the road with Jason Aldean and other major artists, or doing one of his CRASH Course For Success inspirational events —

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, November 12, 2013 – Whether in his current main gig as studio and live drummer for Jason Aldean, or in his CRASH Course For Success inspirational events, where he’s inspiring a new generation of artists, drummer Rich Redmond relies on the HoverMat™ slip-resistant drummer’s mat from Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the world’s leading brand of acoustical treatments.

Redmond (who has also recorded and performed with Kelly Clarkson, Lit, Jewel, Joe Perry, Bryan Adams, Thompson Square and many more) is a thinking man’s drummer: he’ll do 80 shows a year on the road with Aldean and in between will host his unique CRASH Course For Success inspirational events and other sessions, such as his recent inaugural “Drummer’s Weekend” workshop. For the CRASH concept – Commitment, Relationships, Attitude, Skill, and Hunger – Redmond brings in guest clinicians from current top tours and sessions to teach and serve on a Pro Panel and answer questions about building a successful career, including recording hit songs, working with top artists, and playing to tens of thousands of fans each night. But whatever he’s doing when it comes to drums and drumming, Redmond is doing it atop an Auralex HoverMat, which improves acoustical isolation and clarifies the drum’s tone. Fabricated with industry-leading Auralex SheetBlok™ Sound Barrier, the HoverMat allows for high-performance decoupling from hollow stages and floors, optimizing the sound of drums by minimizing resonance from the surface on which the kit is resting. The result is a tighter, purer, more focused drum sound.

“I take my HoverMat on the road and into sessions, and engineers love it,” says Redmond. “Jason’s FOH mixer says it sounds great on stage and through the PA system. It really isolates the kit from the floor and keeps the sound tighter. I also use the HoverMat when I’m doing my CRASH Courses, which we’ve done for audiences ranging from school kids to Fortune 500 companies. In fact, Auralex has sent over extra HoverMats for some of those so that our guest clinicians and attendees can see how good it can make a drum kit sound.”

Redmond points out that the HoverMat can be also rolled up after any performance or session, and the included heavy-duty cinch sack makes transport a breeze. “I pretty much take it everywhere,” he says. “It’s portable and affordable!”

Audio-Technica Celebrates 20 Years of Providing Microphone Solutions for CMA Awards

— For the 47th annual event, which aired live on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, leading music mixers and award-winning performers again picked A-T for sound quality and reliability —

STOW, OH, November 8, 2013 — Audio-Technica, a world leader in transducer technology, is celebrating its 20th year of supporting the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards by providing an extensive selection of vocal and instrument microphones for its annual awards show. The 47th Annual CMA Awards aired live in 5.1-channel surround sound Wednesday, November 6, 2013, on the ABC Television Network from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, and featured over 150 Audio-Technica microphones, including an impressive array of hard-wired mics and Artist Elite® 5000 Series UHF Wireless Systems. Audio-Technica microphones were chosen for their ability to provide clear and consistent audio quality for live broadcast.

The CMA Awards presentation is recognized as Country Music’s Biggest Night™ and represents the pinnacle of achievement for those involved in country music. Once again, Audio-Technica microphones were featured for their accurate and reliable sound reproduction — characteristics that have dictated A-T’s long-standing presence with country music artists.

The team of industry veterans responsible for the audio at this year’s CMA’s again included a who’s-who of broadcast audio. The audio was supervised by award-winning audio producers Tom Davis and Paul Sandweiss; ATK/Audiotek provided the sound system with FOH (front-of-house) mixers Patrick Baltzell and Rick Shimer; the broadcast music mix was handled by New Jersey/California-based M3’s (Music Mix Mobile’s) John Harris and Jay Vicari. Stage monitoring was handled by Tom Pesa and Jason Spence.

Audio-Technica’s acclaimed Artist Elite 5000 Series UHF Wireless System with the AEW-T6100 Hypercardioid Dynamic Handheld Microphone/Transmitter was used for lead vocals by A-T endorser Jason Aldean, who performed “Night Train.” The 5000 Series wireless was also used by Darius Rucker, who performed using the AEW-T5400 Cardioid Condenser Handheld Transmitter. Rucker performed “The Gambler” as part of a Kenny Rogers Tribute and later performed the closing number, “Wagon Wheel.”

The backline mic complement of A-T wired microphones included the AT4080 Phantom-powered Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone on guitars; AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone on guitars and bass; AT4040 Cardioid Condenser Microphone on overheads; AE2500 Dual-Element Cardioid Instrument Microphone on kick drum; AE5100 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone on hi-hat and ride cymbals; AE5400 Cardioid Condenser Microphone on rotary speaker top and AT4050 on rotary speaker bottom; ATM650 Dynamic Instrument Microphone on snare; and ATM350 Cardioid Condenser Clip-On Microphone on toms and strings.

“Audio-Technica supplies an enormous amount of support for us during the CMA’s,” stated Paul Sandweiss, Co-Audio Producer of the 47th Annual CMA Awards. “Their wired and wireless mics sound great, and are consistently reliable — and having representatives from A-T and their gear here at the show makes our lives a whole lot easier!”

“I especially liked using the ATM350 on the string section during the George Jones Tribute,” states Jay Vicari, Co-Music Mixer. “The 350 allowed me to capture the sound of the strings very naturally and because of its size, it was unobtrusive on camera.”

James Stoffo, RF Coordinator/Microphone Tech, echoes Sandweiss’s sentiments: “We have 36 wireless microphones on the show from various manufacturers in a backdrop of 200 radio frequencies that include in-ears, mics and backstage communications. We love the support we receive from Audio-Technica, and we have never had any problems with interference, drifting or audio quality of their wireless systems. The A-T wireless that we have used, not only on this show but others, has been flawless. I’m always happy to see A-T on the show.”

Cabletime Unveils New Digital-Only Media Player

Cabletime, developer of the powerful MediaStar Evolution range of IPTV distribution solutions has announced the launch of the Evolution 780SL Media Player. This ‘refined’ version of the flagship Evolution 780AV player is aimed at users looking for a simpler range of features in an affordable, entry-level solution.

The Evolution 780SL delivers HDMI digital video and audio outputs, and suits users with no requirement for analogue. It still provides the ability to decode streams but now also features 8GB of on-board storage allowing it to play back stored content such as corporate videos and Powerpoint presentations. Like all Evolution products, the 780SL schedules this content through the Evolution Media Manager control software. It is available in standard and power-over-Ethernet versions.

Amongst a variety of other software features, the 780SL has an enhanced scrolling duo ‘ticker’. This enables users to display news, corporate announcements or internal messages overlaid on existing media, in the form of an RSS feed or custom text created via a protected web page. All standard RSS feeds can be shown and up to 10 individual feeds can be scrolled consecutively with a selection of header and/or subject content and in a wide range of colours. One unique feature is the clock, which can be synchronised to the user’s building time server, and, using the feeds, will allow the screen to display up to 10 different time zones simultaneously.

“The new Evolution has been refined, in the sense that it weighs slightly less than the 780AV, it also requires slightly less power, but it is highly affordable and still delivers all the functionality that Cabletime’s customers have come to expect of the Evolution range,” commented Mike Cuckow, Sales Director, EMEA Asia Pacific at Cabletime.

“Our goal was to deliver a media player that would allow content to be stored, scheduled, played-back and streamed using the clever technology that we have perfected over time, but with less components, enabling us to offer it at a highly competitive price. I believe we have achieved that goal.” Cuckow concluded.

The Evolution 780SL was launched on November 1st and is now available for order. Prices available from Cabletime or its network of resellers.

The MediaStar range provides TV/AV and multimedia distribution products primarily for medium to large enterprises, which require future-proof, stable and proven solutions for live TV, corporate communications, multicasts, music TV, training and digital signage.

WorldStage and AV&C Set “Stylescape” in Motion at the “3.1 Phillip Lim for Target” Fashion Week Event

During Fashion Week the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target collection was previewed at a private pop-up shopping event in New York City where “Stylescape,” a larger-than-life interactive cinemagraph conceived by Mother NY to showcase the limited-edition collection as worn and blogged about by tastemakers across the US and Canada. WorldStage provided AV support for “Stylescape,” for which the media and interaction systems and software were designed and implemented by Audio, Video and Controls (AV&C).

The event was held at Spring Studio on Varrick Street where shoppers clamored for Lim’s clothing, shoes, bags and accessories for men and women while mingling with Jessica Alba, Solange Knowles, Nate Berkus, Maria Sharapova and Perez Hilton. Billed as a “North American fashion panorama,” “Stylescape” served as a striking backdrop in the space, displaying notables photographed on the same day in various North American cities wearing Lim’s collection. The panoramic, interactive video installation played out on a high-resolution 3.9 mm LED wall measuring 10 x 120 feet.

AV&C is a New York-based media and interactive systems and software firm, led by David Bianciardi, that bridges the gap between technology and design in the built environment. The company specializes in creating digital icons and interactive experiences in public spaces, so it was uniquely qualified to bring “Stylescape” to life.

For the pop-up shopping event, the team at Mother wanted to create something ambitious, engaging AV&C early in the process to design something aesthetically beautiful and technically sophisticated. The team finally settled on creating “the world’s largest cinemagraph and make it interactive and responsive,” says AV&C’s Bianciardi. “We had a huge canvas of visuals shot in 6 locations by Peter Funch, acquired simultaneously in 6x 4K video and digital stills. The resulting composited canvas was beautiful in itself, then we introduced the cinemagraph’s repetitive motion,” which guests triggered by manipulating physical props, using social media services, or simply moving and posing in front of the interactive wall.

The idea was to play with blurring the boundaries of physical, social and digital media, he explains. “A famous blogger would stand next to a bus station in Dallas on the screen; viewers could Tweet her, she’d respond and it would show upon the poster at the bus stop. Or viewers could dance with a salsa dancer, take a photo with the designer, blow on pinwheels, etc. There were 40 opportunities for interaction. The way we combined techniques was unprecedented and the scale and resolution of this type of screen was unprecedented.”

“David and the folks at AV&C are great at finding the sweet spot where technological sophistication and user enjoyment meet.” says WorldStage president Josh Weisberg. “It’s our job to mirror that philosophy in the implementation of the audio, video and lighting systems and in this project all of those elements came together successfully. You could see it in the faces of the guests interacting with Stylescape.”

AV&C called WorldStage Integration VP & tech designer John Ackerman as soon as they were awarded the project. “John immediately got it,” say Bianciardi, “and so did the superstars up and down the WorldStage ranks – that’s what makes WorldStage the right partner for us. We made several visits to their shop and set up a series of technology tests with client and creative stakeholders. WorldStage provided the platforms for all the work we did on the interactive technology, and we wrote custom software that put everything together into a cohesive whole.”

“By implementing (Derivative’s) TouchDesigner platform and Pandora we enabled the client to put a really big tableau on a long videowall,” says Weisberg. WorldStage also furnished 16-channel sound for “Stylescape” and a lighting package for the event. Michael Kohler was the Pandora programmer and Kate Brown was the audio engineer. AV&C’s Vincent Houze led the visualization and interaction software development.

“We partner with WorldStage for their technical sophistication,” say Bianciardi. “They understand what our requests mean and make suggestions as an active partner. They truly work in the service of design.”

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.
