Daktronics Revitalizes Lane Stadium’s Sound System with HARMAN Professional Audio Components

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Systems integrator Daktronics recently upgraded Virginia Tech University’s Lane Stadium with new HARMAN’s JBL VLA Series loudspeakers, along with equipment from BSS audio and Soundcraft. The stadium seats 66,233 and is home to the Virginia Tech Hokies football team.

The goal of this renovation was to ensure a high output system and even coverage from seat to seat. Daktronics selected JBL Professional’s VLA Series line arrays, which offers revolutionary high-impact sound beyond the reach of traditional loudspeaker designs.

“We designed the JBL VLA system to meet and exceed the initial performance standards of point-and-shoot horn speakers, while also reducing costs,” said David Sturzenbecher, Audio Project Engineer for Daktronics.

Daktronics installed a system consisting of 18 JBL VLA601H loudspeakers, four JBL VLA301H loudspeakers, two JBL PD5212 loudspeakers, two JBL PD764 loudspeakers, powered by 17 Crown I-Tech HD 4×3500 amplifiers and nine I-Tech 9000 amplifiers, with two BSS Soundweb London BLU-800 processors. The system also features a Soundcraft Performer 3 audio/lighting mixing console.

“The system has been functioning great and received many positive reviews. We utilized additional DSP I/O to control additional areas outside of the initial scope to provide added customer functionality,” Sturzenbecher added.

Besides installation, Daktronics was also responsible for system design and programming. Of course, a project incorporating all these elements did not go unchallenged.

“The original design did not call for vertical arrays, so we collaborated with the structure engineer to redesign the space to accommodate for the VLA system,” Sturzenbecher noted. “With support from [JBL Senior Applications Engineer] Brad Ricks and [owner’s representative] Anthony James Partners, we successfully completed the project.”

DPA Microphones At The Top Of The Class

Children are lovely, but they do have a habit of breaking things, which is why any piece of equipment used in a school environment needs to be very tough.

RTW To Demo TM3, TM9 Audio Meters at the Group One Booth During CCW 2013

TouchMonitor Series, TM3
Controlled using a touch-sensitive display, the TM3 has a budget-friendly base price, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a stylish exterior allowing for horizontal and vertical placement. Features include a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel or, in the case of the TM3-3G, any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G-SDI stream used for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G-SDI audio. Both also include summing-loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 and TM3-3G are highly appealing compact solutions ideal for editorial offices, edit suites and small control rooms.

Therefore, the user can choose between an autostart after loading a preset or autostart when reaching the value of an adjusted gate, with or without an automatic reset of previous values. Users can terminate loudness measurements manually with on-screen keys and/or GUI commands, as well as automatically by defining a threshold value and time span. The combination of those parameters allows users to set an automatic, semi-automatic or manual loudness measurement process as required for different applications. The Test Time Control option will also be available for the TouchMonitor TM7, TMR7 and TM9 with the next firmware update.

The TouchMonitor series is a range of products that RTW designed to support all relevant loudness recommendations, such as EBU R128 or ATSC A/85, with true peak metering, flexible I/O options with up to 16/32 input channels, a fully modular software design and more. It’s a first: TDC wraps Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylons in projection for Australian Naval Spectacular

Achieving the very first projection onto both sides of the epic proportions of Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House as well as onto the pylons of Sydney Harbour Bridge was by no means a small challenge for any technology company.

Australia was celebrating the first entry of the national Australian fleet into Sydney Harbour one hundred years ago and re-telling the story for The Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review. Imagination Australia was the Creative team and Producer of the event, who engaged Technical Direction Company (TDC) as their video technology partner.

An evening spectacular involved video projection that was combined with stunning fireworks launched from seven warships. There was lighting from 28 land and ship locations plus live action on board ships culminating in an aerial fly past from the Royal Australian Air Force that was enjoyed by the millions lining the foreshore.

“The spectacular was created in seven acts, from introducing Australia’s original fleet, through 100 proud years of service to Australia, current capabilities, a moment of reflection for the fallen and a finale to rival Sydney’s New Year’s Eve,” said Heath Campanaro, Project Director at Imagination Australia. “The show was a once in a lifetime project and will go down in history as one of the most inspiring, moving pieces of creativity at this kind of scale.”

We make it happen

Digital video projection onto both sides of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons was a first. To create such a visual spectacular, TDC worked for months of planning and testing with Imagination Australia to design and realise the brightest projection ever delivered.

TDC deployed a total of 56 Barco projectors including models FLM-HD20, HDF-W26 and HDQ-2K40 that were positioned at great distances and angles, including projection towers located up to 700 metres away from across Sydney Harbour. It was vital to that the projection was visible from all sides of the Harbour – which had not been done before.

TDC ensured that the content created by Imagination Australia was managed using Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and display software and 26 computer servers. The entire proceedings were synchronised by timecode and transmitted across Sydney Harbour using Reidel MediorNet fibre optic media signal distribution and processing.

“The project took months of planning and days of painstaking projector alignment and positioning to get every pixel lined up and just right across various projectors,” enthused Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC.

“Rarely does a project of this epic scale take place in Australia. Our team of projection experts did a great job and we’re very proud of what we’ve delivered,” said Michael Hassett, MD at TDC.

PixelFLEX Announces Unveiling of 6mm LED Video Curtain at LDI 2013

PixelFLEX, a leading provider of flexible and lightweight LED video screens, is unveiling its 6mm curtain video screen at LDI 2013 in November (Booth 669). The new 6mm curtain is the company’s highest resolution offering, joining PixelFLEX’s growing line of products that include panels ranging from 7mm to 100mm, in addition to its LR-4 and LR-8 lightweight rigid video screens for outdoor and indoor applications.

Providing a variety of video display solutions to meet any and all live event needs, PixelFLEX’s LED curtains are easy to operate and set up – videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection. The Peoples Church Pairs a Spyder with new LED Wall

The Peoples Church in Franklin, Tennessee, known for its strong use and support of creative arts and media, has invested in a Vista Systems Spyder X20 to take visuals for worship services and events to a new level.

The Peoples Church, which was founded as First Baptist Church of Franklin, Tennessee in 1838, holds two services at the Franklin campus each week plus special events for its congregation of 6,000. The Franklin campus worship center, housed in a building erected 15 years ago, seats 1,750.

“We replaced our old rear-projection video cube wall with a 4 mil LED wall measuring 33×10,” says Dustin Lemler, Executive Director of Creative Arts and Production at The Peoples Church. “When we looked for options for an image processor the unanimous recommendation was for Vista Systems’ Spyder, so it became the only solution we proposed to our Elder Board.”

In exploring a replacement for the videowall, Lemler and his colleagues “didn’t just want a screen. We wanted a palette that would do multiple things.” The image processing system they chose also had to be capable of handling multiple inputs and offer room for future growth.

“We need to have four or five images on the LED wall at once, and Spyder provided the best option for that,” Lemler explains. “We have 16 sources and use eight at a time. We’re running HDSDI out of the main switcher, and typically have several Macs running Pro Presenter, a stillstore, DVRs and DDRs for HD playback with some other composite sources left open as redundant back ups.”

Lemler and Church Media Director, Mark Hengstenberg went through Spyder training at Vista Systems’ headquarters in Phoenix. “We just hired an additional staff engineer, and he loves it – he picked it up really quickly,” Lemler reports.

“We recently debuted Spyder in a weekend service, and everyone was overwhelmed with how it worked,” he says. “It has enabled us to rethink our presentation. Spyder is proving to be an all-in-one box that can do everything we need and more. It will allow us to expand into all that it can do and has future compatibility for more screens.”

Lemler adds that support from Vista Systems has been “excellent. If we had any questions, people got right back to us. We haven’t been able to stump them yet!”

Iconyx Makes it Clear at Mizzou Aquatic Center

Columbia, MO – November 2013…. The University of Missouri has a well-deserved reputation for going the extra mile for its student body, and their Student Recreation Center is a case in point. With a range of indoor and outdoor facilities to meet almost any discipline, their Mizzou Aquatic Center is just one of several jewels in the crown. The Aquatic Center’s 50 meter pool and Diving Well have hosted numerous high-profile competitions, including Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, USA Swimming Series, and NCAA meets.

Since its opening in 2005, the Aquatic Center had also been known for its problematic acoustics. With its soaring glass and concrete walls, massive steel roof, and abundance of reflective surfaces, announcements were literally drowning in the din. That is, until the Center installed their new Iconyx digitally steered column array system.

“The original audio system never really provided the coverage they needed,” explains Brian Noerlinger, with the Overland Park, Kansas offices of Conference Technologies, Inc. “The speakers were mounted at about 56 feet high, and the intelligibility factor was close to nil.”

The ceiling’s height created strategic challenges as well. “One of our biggest obstacles was taking the old speakers down,” says Noerlinger. “The largest lift we could get into the building only went to 40 feet. Erecting a scaffold would have called for draining the pool, which wasn’t an option. So I put a couple of pieces of conduit together with a couple of pulleys and a spring and a rope, and essentially made a big long tree trimmer. I threw a rope around the speakers, pried them off and reached up and cut. I had one heck of an audience watching from below.”

As challenging as it was to get the old speakers down, installing anything else at that height would have proven impossible. “The original plan had been for the Iconyx to be part of the design, along with hanging additional speakers to replace the old ones,” says Noerlinger. Instead, CTI worked with the Renkus-Heinz engineering team to design a system to cover the entire space using only three Iconyx columns.

The system is comprised of a single Iconyx IC16-R-II column in the center, flanked by IC8-R-II columns on either side. “One of the IC8 columns covers the diving well area, with the IC16 at dead center and the other IC8 down at the far end of the pool,” says Noerlinger. “With just those three columns, we were able to achieve a consistent 110 dB coverage across the entire seating area.” A CFX218S dual 18 inch subwoofer adds low end punch and power to pump up the crowd.

Intelligibility is also dramatically improved, Noerlinger adds. “Having the ability to control our point sources and direct the sound exactly where we wanted it — and more importantly, to steer it away from the places we didn’t want it — made a tremendous difference. The sound in there now is crystal clear.”
